the frozen winds howled as the tribe marched across an ocean made solid a man at the front could be heard shouting for everyone to stay together and keep moving the tone of his voice betrayed a fiery determination that wouldn't be stopped by the gaels or the cold but not everyone had his spirit they've been traveling through the ice and snow for weeks now and it wasn't getting better one of the girls in this tribe finally felt her heart break as she fell to her knees and wept but even her tears wouldn't be spared as they swiftly became shards of ice against her cheeks one of her sisters stopped trying to pull her up and encourage her to keep moving that all would be well but she was so tired she was so cold shouting could be heard again but she couldn't tell why anymore all she could hear were the heavy footfalls of someone moving to stand in front of her she eventually found the strength to look up and saw her father their leader standing against the frigid breeze he looked down at her with the same determined gaze he had been giving the tundra all these weeks but instead of his wrath she found his embrace as he cradled her up in his arms and turned to continue his march once more he ordered everyone to keep moving and stay together adding that all of them will see their new home they all would see eorzea different people usually place their values into different things the same goes for cultures governments and even tribes one such group of tribes have chosen to define themselves through family and what it means to play your role in one good day my friends i am the cenotic scribe gather around for today we'll be covering the wild and true history of the ever vigilant makote [Music] the makote have a strange history with aorzia but one that's no less important most of aldenard's modern makote are descendants of those who migrated here during the fifth umbral era this was a point in history more commonly known as the era of eternal frost or the calamity of ice this was because the world found itself in an almost ceaseless winter with large chunks of the ocean becoming frozen over most makote around this time were located around the southern side of ilsebart but were losing things to hunt due to the rapid change in climate in a desperate attempt to find game that could sustain their lifestyle the precursor makote traveled south likely in hopes of reaching a more temperate zone however the mountains separating ilsa bard and aldenard can be perilous even at the best of times which means the calamity of ice made crossing those mountains suicidal however some regions of the ocean had frozen over allowing the makote to walk across bridges of ice giving them access to eorzea from the north though eventually the 5th umbral age gave way to the fifth astral era and the makote saw no reason to leave as most of ayorzia has ever been a vibrant and bountiful land this was thanks to iorzia always having a high concentration of natural aether when compared to other locations in the world as you all know the makote boast a rather wild appearance with their natural born feline traits these developments in their physiology have lent them to be natural-born hunters allowing them to stalk and take down prey much more efficiently than many other races this is reflected in their choice of attire as it usually lends to greater freedom of movement and complements their natural agility although it is also this exotic appearance and sometimes lack of concealing clothes that has made them the object of affection for more than a few other races both inside and outside of eorzea an astute observer will notice that the makote have never attempted to create any sort of city-state or country this is because the makote themselves prefer their small clan based lifestyle as opposed to that of creating an entire empire or kingdom this is born from a strong sense of tradition that has been passed down through multiple generations and even those mokoti living outside of their clan's territory usually still follow these traditions while mingling amongst other races this may not seem as impressive or bombastic as creating a country but countries have risen and fallen whilst the many clans of the makote still persevere to this day that being said while some makote clans are seen as xenophobic they all learned and adopted the common tongue developed by the hearer very quickly as the need to trade and barter for rare goods with other races became necessary despite this they have not lost a communication method they refer to as huntspeak which is a variety of different tongue clicks whistles and noises to communicate with other hunters without disturbing the natural fauna [Music] of all the races in neorzia the makote are among the least populated as mentioned before the bulk of their race lives and mingles within their own clans and hunting grounds though this ultimately begs the question as to why we would see so many of them leave said clans to join the city-states and adventuring parties if they possess such a deep respect for heritage indeed it is because of said heritage and traditions that we see so many leave their families and travel the world sometimes it's the desire to hunt even greater prey other times it's the curiosity that comes with seeing other races and cultures but quite often a traveling makote is following the traditions of their clan the makote are split into two distinct clans the seekers of the sun and the keepers of the moon we understand the reason for this being the seekers of the sun primarily use hunting and gathering methods that involve working beneath the heat of daylight whilst the keepers of the moon have adopted a much more nocturnal lifestyle and usually only operate under a moonlit night due to this drastic difference in hours of operation they possess very different physical traits from one another their eyes will always betray their heritage a seeker of the sun possesses vertically aligned pupils that helps to filter out sunlight more effectively while stage keeper of the moon will always have rounder pupils and a thicker iris to take in as much light as possible during the night additionally the keepers of the moon are known to possess larger canines than that of the seekers of the sun but unless you ask them to smile you might not ever see such a thing at a distance you wouldn't be blamed for failing to notice these distinctions as the two clans often get confused for one another but don't be fooled they couldn't be more different we'll begin with the seekers of the sun typically they live in open regions where sunlight isn't obscured such as the coastal regions of lenotia the vast segoli desert or the mountains of giribana just to name a few of the two clans the seekers of the sun boast the greatest physical power their bodies have adapted to the wider areas they live in making them stronger faster and more resilient than their knight based cousins this also makes them superb physical fighters as well specializing in both ranged and melee combat these makote have become popular sailors in limbs of lomenza due to their excellent climbing skills and talent for diving into deep waters with ease when compared to the here these makote are incredibly consistent with how strong and healthy they are from generation to generation but this has everything to do with how their claim works as well as how it breeds although before we get into that it is important to understand the 26 different tribes within the clan worshiping azima goddess of the sun there have always been at least 26 unique tribes belonging to the seekers of the sun before they settled in eorzea however by some kind of fluke or divine fate the aorzian alphabet possessed the same amount of letters seeing this as some kind of sign from the gods each tribe adopted a different letter in the alphabet a seeker's first name will always tell you the tribe they come from as the first letter will always belong to that tribe for instance the u tribe has been seen living favorably inside an oasis located in the segoli desert meanwhile the m tribe found a sanctuary on a mountainous ridge in garibanya subtracting the first letter will provide you the seeker's given name which is only ever used by family members and individuals the seeker sees as family to use a seeker's given name without permission is considered extremely disrespectful and even with permission one is usually still expected to use their full name when in the presence of their tribe the secrets of the sun live a patriarchal lifestyle with their only ever being one dominant male this male's last name is also their title nun the nun of a tribe is often the leader as well as the current strongest male in said tribe this ensures that all children born from them are of healthy stock a weak nun does not remain in power for long this is because a tia from their tribe or another makote tribe is usually prepared to challenge them for their position there have only ever been a couple recorded cases of a tribe having more than one nun and it's unknown if said males continue to coexist peacefully for too terribly long being the dominant male the nun possesses a harem of women and is the only one allowed to mate within the tribe all other males are given the title of tia the only way a tia can become a nun is if they defeat the current leader in single combat ensuring that the new breeding male will produce similar if not stronger children that is why it's not uncommon to see many seekers with the title of tia adventuring throughout the world and trying to hone their skills typically they desire to become powerful enough to assume the role of nun but if they discover something important to them they might never return to their tribe a male seeker that does not desire to return to their clan usually still bears the title of tia out of respect of tradition if you ever come across one of these tribes you'll typically find they're made of a single nun with perhaps a tia or two that are learning from or preparing to challenge the current nun afterwards every other member of the tribe is actually comprised of women despite being patriarchal seeker tribes are mostly populated run and empowered by the women that live within them these ladies are often fierce hunters in their youth and treasured for their wisdom as mothers the females belonging to a seeker tribe don't gain a title for their last name like the males do instead their last name is inherited from their father typically the women of this clan don't travel nearly as much as a tia will but it's not unheard of for girls belonging to a seeker tribe to go out and find glory on their own the reason this system works for them is because of their deep sense of family and community a cruel noon has always been known to be overthrown by an aspiring tia so that the tribe can thrive and enjoy the luxuries that come with strong bonds the women respect and or love their nun and in return he dedicates everything to his tribe giving his all to those under his care for the rest of his life [Music] though as we move on we have the seeker's night loving cousins the keepers of the moon discussing these makote can be tricky while the seekers of the sun proudly display themselves out in the open world the keepers of the moon are much more secretive almost every tribe belonging to the keepers of the moon live within the black shroud the enormous forest surrounding the country of gridania originally the keepers were seen as little more than poachers by the residents of this nation to this day some of them are still considered just that however most of the keeper tribes have reconciled with gridania and now follow the rules set by the trappers league and openly trade with the city-state in fact some keeper tribes are so involved with gridania they're basically citizens as many can be seen working as craftsmen and soldiers within the country physically the keepers are much more quiet and patient than the seekers of the sun as they've learned to hunt and travel in the dead of night this sense of stillness and quiet may have given them a weaker physical stature compared to the seekers but has instead given them a greater awareness of aether as well as a stronger connection to it making some keepers into exceedingly powerful mages [Music] as different as knight is today the keepers of the moon possess a purely matriarchal society and the title of father is non-existent this means that only women ever lead or hold positions of power within their tribes while they don't work with the aorzine alphabet in their names like the seekers do the keepers have their own naming conventions and how these names are treated changes based on whether or not you're a boy or a girl for the daughters their forename is their given name and their surname is their family name which is always inherited from their mother but just because they have the same family name does not mean they have the same mother as some family names within the keepers of the moon stretch back for thousands of years meanwhile the suns simply inherit their mother's first and last name with a suffix added to the first name to denote which son they are for instance should their first name end in a this means they are the first born son to that mother this becomes toe for the second son li for the third and so on but rarely does any mother have more than three sons as you can guess most keeper tribes are led by a single and strong motherly figure with other women and their children running the tribes day to day but it's not uncommon for a large tribe of keepers to have two or three smaller families inside of it that hunt and work together almost exclusively i'll be honest i know very little about their hierarchy past this as the importance of certain roles seems to change based on the family in question but from what i have gathered the sons don't have a permanent position in the family once they come of age they usually leave to become wanderers or try to make a name for themselves all on their own this is why many male keepers are seen working for or with gridania additionally the only time mature male keepers are seen returning to their tribe is to either visit their families or assist with things like reproduction before ultimately leaving once more moving on from their naming conventions and cultural structure we realize that the keepers of the moon are much more spiritual and ceremonial than their secret cousins dedicating most of their worship to the moon goddess menfina it's typical for them to decorate themselves in war paint before hunting or doing battle for various reasons to some the paint is a symbol of their readiness for combat and understanding the blood that is to be spilled to others it is a symbol to the gods themselves telling them that they shall become warriors for the divine should they fall in battle likewise these spiritual beliefs could be the reason they don't spread out as often as the seekers do but given this and other lifestyle choices the keepers of the moon are seen much less often than the seekers of the sun in most situations which is saying a lot since the makote already aren't too populated in eorzea that my friends is my complete lecture on the modern makote even if you disagree with the lifestyles of either of these clans it cannot be stated that they are weak by any measure their systems have kept them alive and thriving for hundreds of years and they have silently watched as empires rise and fall this is reflected in their sense of community and tradition a seeker of the sun whether male or female will always be welcomed back into the tribe with open arms when they grow tired meanwhile a keeper of the moon will usually have a shelter beneath the boughs of the black shroud's canopy while you'll find the biggest groups of makote living and operating in their respective tribes they've recently taken a great pride in showing the world what they're capable of so when next you meet a makote you've never seen before glance at their eyes and ask their name these things will tell you more about them than you could ever possibly know [Music] if you like this video don't forget
