[Music] hey y'all justin with kayak catfish i'm out here on the tennessee river this morning doing some drifting it's just after dawn the sun's actually coming up over the tree line there now it's going to be a beautiful day out here but what i'm doing is i'm drifting along a deep hump or sunken island as some people call them it would be over here to my right and this section of the river getting this rod hit right here i've got a bunch of small fish that's just been musical rods since i got my baits in the water i'll kind of show you what i'm doing here so i'm right on the edge of this hump like i said it's over here to my right i'm at 72 feet of water i'm going at 0.4 all these squiggles here is small fish and they've just been tapping my rods just non-stop down there chewing up my baits but hopefully we're gonna get through these small fish and keep working our way down through here and this one right here may actually be hooked up i'll put this camera back here in my chest and pick up on him now now he's moved over here to this one me pick up on him well yeah i tell you folks these small fish man they get down there i'm using skipjack for bait today i've got my baits suspended directly under the kayak they're raised up just a couple feet off the bottom so you know right now my baits are 68 feet deep or so but them small fish they're too small to get to base and they just sit down there and peck and chew and just shred your baits to pieces so hopefully we're going to move past them here shortly and keep working along here and run into some bigger fish today that's what i'm hoping to find that's what i'm always hoping to find out here is those bigger trophy class fish one of these rods is getting hit again this one may have actually hooked up here folks we may get our first fish here right during the intro nope he just let it go again i'm gonna reel my bait up and check it right fast make sure it ain't foul hooked or they've been down there messing with it yeah it's still in pretty good shape they just being a nuisance down there y'all being i'm on a big school of them here like i said this section of the river here pretty deep and uh wherever i'm fishing at i don't care if it's upper river lower river or wherever i'm at i'm always trying to find the deepest structure in the area so some parts of the river that may be 25 feet and other places like down here we may fish some 90 feet depths today but to have any success today we're gonna have to get away from all of those so i may have to reel up my lines and move on down here a little ways to outrun them but hopefully we're gonna have a good day out here catch some big fish and with that sunrise coming up like i said it's gonna be a beautiful day a fun day regardless so let's get on some fish well this one here this one here hooked up he's uh finally got the bait here this is a skip jack head heat i've got skip jack on all my rods right now i do have some white bass in my cooler but they're kind of old they're about four days old now that's about the end of when i want to be using white bass so i'm going to go with my fresh skip jack for now until i run out i don't have very many and then once i'm done with that we'll start using the white bass that right there folks that's what's been down there he's threw that head piece off too doggone him but that's what's down there just shredding my baits they just big enough to chew on them but not big enough to hardly get the hook all right fish number one we'll save the skunks out with him fish like that right there though you get on a big school of them you can put a three pound skip jack down there on your hook it don't matter they'll shred it to pieces in no time let's get us another bait on here though we'll come across something bigger today just dropped that bait down we got one on now the other rod up bear's getting hit i'll tell you what we're about to do this won't be popular with some ovens that are watching but this is something that i have found you can do to deter those smaller fish from biting but still give yourself a chance at bigger fish and that is to take these smaller catfish blue cats or channel cats or whatever you have pestering you take one of them use it as bait these small catfish for whatever reason don't seem to want to eat themselves at least in my experience but the bigger ones will so this one right here is about to have a bad day before i deal with him let me pick up on this and yeah he's hooked up too yeah i'll tell you what folks i you know oh my gosh that rod back here is going down let me set this one back let's pick up ole missing now let's see if he's any bigger he's probably not well listen right now he just come free too all right let's drop this back down y'all i can't get one thing done for the next small fish hitting i was trying to stay there i you know i love catching fish i want to always get action every time i go out but i want to catch biggins and it is hard to do that when your baits are either out of the water because you're reeling in these small fish like this or your baits are sitting down there either strip clean off the hook or shredded or foul hook where these smaller ones are down there just pecking and swapping at it so we're going to pull this enough whichever smaller between this one and the one in the kayak is are they about the same size we'll go with the one that's in the kayak here but he's about to be bait we ain't tolerating this today there he goes say goodbye to him i'm about to say goodbye to this one too all right y'all this won't be popular but that is a piece of blue cat that i'm going to use to try to catch blue cats it is perfectly legal here in east tennessee you can use any sport fish so long as it's caught on rod and reel and meets the minimum size requirements catfish out here no regulations other than for trophy size fish and people are only allowed to keep one over 34 inches per day but these small ones they're fair game can't eat them out here because of the uh contamination we've got advisory signs up at all the boat ramps around here telling people not to not to eat the catfish just due to the contamination so i'm going to take two rods and put the catfish on and we'll have two with the skipjack steel and hopefully that will deter the smaller fish from eating on the catfish and have it down there in case we come across some big ones this piece of catfish got eat there it goes there it goes man yeah old blue cat that had a bad day for eating my skip jack just got eat i'll tell you what y'all it really it really turned my bites when i put that catfish on there i my other two rods there with skipjack got shredded and stripped so i took some of my white bass that i wasn't going to use today unless i just had to i put them on two rods in addition to my two rods here with catfish and it's really slowed down my bite i ain't had that musical rod i'm still marking a ton of fish on the graph but they're leaving my baits alone and that's a good thing because i want some baits down there when i come across a a whopper we've already look right here i'll get him back up here he's got my other line there that's all right we've already improved our size just by doing that so quality is getting a little better oh lordy now he wants to show out for us i'm up here come on in here mister yeah well just like that we improved our quality a little bit now he's still no monster but definitely better quality than the size of the fish that was just picking my skipjack clean down there this one's a cannibal he ate some of his kid folk but you know what that's something you can do uh if it's legal in your state he's getting ready to flop i'm gonna let him go get here get out of here boy uh but if it's legal in your state and you're just getting pestered with tiny fish take some of them tiny catfish and cut them up in big chunks and they're a tough bait so even if they are getting messed with down there on your hook that skin of the catfish i mean it's tough it's hard to take that hook and the bait and rip it out that one there threw off the bait but still it's a it's a very tough meat very tough hide so them small fish can sit down there and peck and chew and felt like a rod was getting hit i don't know which one i felt it uh but they can sit down there and just peck and shoot and they're not going to rip it off the hook like your softer bait such as a shad and skip jack and things like that but i'm gonna get another bait on this one we'll get back to it this back rod here is hooked up this one i broke down and put a piece of skipjack on i wanted to just put a piece down there and oh it didn't take long and then dink said swarm swarm we got one here this may be a little better than those first couple that we landed but he ain't gonna be no i ain't gonna be no golly whopper now maybe it's maybe a smidge bigger than the first two and he threw the bait off dog gone it man going through some bait early out here today all right there he is we're gonna let that go let's send him out of here i'm gonna live dangerously and put another piece of skipjack on that right there that's the only one i'm using skipjack on though right now just to try to deter some of these dinks try to get away from something's swimming with this piece of catfish up here yeah he's on there he's got it old blue cat getting it done on blue cat [Laughter] that's what you gotta do sometimes folks you gotta take him small fish that are giving you a hard time and you gotta make an example out of them send them down there cut up in pieces to their friends that's how the mob would do it back in the day right [Laughter] we've been starting a catfish mob around here treat them like jimmy hoffa back rod there is getting hit too yeah this one here another little one but that bait if you can see it right there it's staying near perfect condition like i mentioned man it's it's tough as nails it is hard to tear up catfish rod there he may be hooking up let me pick up on him yeah he's on there let's set this one back he can tuck himself out while we deal with this one this is again my one and only rod it's got skip jack on it right now the white bass has been touched a couple times but nothing nothing real significant it's just those small fish down there messing with it well i'm here 68 feet along this hump and there's just a massive school under doubt undoubtedly there's probably some bigger fish mixed in with this school of smaller ones but it's just hard to hard to get your bait in front of the big ones when this right here is down here just all over it as soon as it gets down there all right let's set him back we'll land this first one over here first and get him going i'm gonna keep this other smaller one here too for bait and we uh end up needing him all right folks there it is piece of blue cat catching blue cat i'll say goodbye well this in here this one here we ain't gonna say goodbye to we're gonna keep him he's another one of these really small ones and i got a feeling he's gonna end up catching us something today because this back rod that's a piece of catfish on there last little small dink blue we made an example out of him too by gosh he's on there i think one of his small cousins down there i think he got eaten by him these fish are cannibals folks hopefully he didn't throw his cousin's bait off or piece of him off the hook there he didn't we still got it dang near perfect condition oh well there he went that's what he eat folks a piece of his piece of his cousin there you can see man that that catfish hide i'm telling you it's tough as nails tough as a two dollar stake as they used to say but it'll work it's helping to turn the bites it's giving me a bait down there that something at least in good condition in case we do come across some big fish today i just can't keep the skipjack on the hook them small fish like the one we just caught oh here goes one behind me crap let's set this one back this is on that white bass head here well i was saying that skip jack i can't keep it on hook and small fish like the one we just caught there they're just on it as soon as it goes down it's the better fish because they're just stripping my hooks clean i mean skip jack i love it it's an awesome bait but you got to have it in the water when the big mama comes along and if you can't keep it down there then in my opinion it's better to have a lesser quality bait that the smaller fish don't want to mess with as much and have it sitting down there in perfect condition then a half eating piece of skip jack that's maybe shredded on the hook so that's just my thoughts on it we'll get this one up here i don't i don't know how big this is going to be he's definitely better definitely better than the yeah better than the others we've got today a little better quality but again that one ate a four day old white bass head oh goodness i'll equip that flocking now hopefully you can get the camera up there wet yeah guys this one here you know it's white bass a little bit old four days old now that's one of my bigger headpieces and small fish down there they just ain't been they ain't been messing with it too bad unlike a skipjack but again that's a little better quality fish that honestly i probably wouldn't have caught if i had continued to use the skipjack because chances are my bait wouldn't have been in good condition or even in the water when we come through this one so hopefully that's how it's going to go today with these other baits you know hopefully we'll come across some bigger active fish and you know even though these baits aren't what i would ideally like to be fishing with hopefully they'll get eaten just just for being down there you know be in the right place right now so let's get him out here and folks i'll show you get the water off the lens of this one if i can here and i'll show you you can see all them squiggles right there it's just small fish i just i just ain't been able to get away from them they've been this this is a giant hump right here i mean it's a it was a massive island back in the day before they flooded all this and they've just been um a huge school of small blue cats all the way down through here so far so i keep thinking i'm going to outrun them at some point but you know i've been out here on the water i don't know what time it is now it's 9 30 right now and uh so two and a half hours i've been out here i just can't get away from them something's got that bait right there you can see my line kind of going at an angle we'll let him eat it take that rod tip down might just be another small one messing with it he may have it i don't know let's pick up on it i guess maybe we'll pull it out of his mouth if he's a little one oh he's going to head back there towards my other lines what he wants to do this one here is on a the body piece of that white bass that last good fish ate the head this one got the midsection i'm still right here about 68 feet deep just chugging along i'm going to cover the whole side of this hump see what time it is i'll either continue going down the main channel ledge or i may come back up and hit the other side of the hump i don't know we don't get no better quality fish than what we've got i'll probably just keep going down the ledge this in here maybe a little better but he's still ain't gonna be no golly whopper and that's what we after on this channel folks we after the golly whoppers this in here is just a larger dink and he threw my bait off of course threw it off dog going hey what i've went through no more fish than i've actually caught out here today that i've actually got up to the kayak i have gone through some bait you know what you look at this in here he didn't even get the hook in his mouth he swapped at that bait started rolling and got himself on the side of the head just wondering he didn't put his eye out like oh my god ralphie shoot your eye out buddy get out here leave my baits alone all right guys there's our next bait i'm done messing with these small fish that's the head of that blue cat there that we cut up that's a monster-sized bait so we're gonna drop him down see if we can catch a monster on him he said i'm done with these small fish for the day we're whopper hunting now all right rod's going down let's see we got on here y'all i put a piece of skipjack on here i been keeping an eye on my graph i've dropped off the deeper water here i've been 78 feet now and the all the squiggles all them dinks down there that i've been seeing all morning out here they had kind of dispersed so i thought i'll put me a piece of skipjack back on and just just see what happens and here we are a few minutes later i believe i got another daggone dink on here we'll see how we get him up here he don't feel like he's very big yeah another small one but at least we're going to get that piece of skip jack back what's left of it anyway it's been munch down yeah folks you can see that piece of skip jack i had a big section of the body piece on there too it's been gone and or been eaten and there's part of that i was just the ribs hanging out there it's been munched on no longer than it's been down there but that's a larger size dink here out of 78 feet of water let him go i just about out of skip jack every time i've dropped it down i've either been had my hook stripped or caught a fish i wanted to use some better quality bait like a skipjack out here today but small fish just ain't having it we're gonna drop what's left of that back down though make the most of it there goes the blue cat there it goes man may be a little better quality right there yeah buddy i'm still right here about 78 feet on the side of this side of this hump i'm just gonna follow that contour all the way down through here now i've got two rods baited with catfish this one here is the midsection and i got that big head piece on another i got a white bass head on my other back rod and then whatever's left of that skip jack head on my other front one that poor thing's been hit a couple more times since that last fish so it's probably about going i'll probably check it after this fish here and re-bait if need be i'm kind of taking my time with these fish you know bringing them up slow kind of have to in this kind of depth let them decompress yeah that's a good fish y'all that's the best one of the morning that is the best one of the morning that's what i'm hoping to find y'all that right yonder yes sir yep yep come on man that right there is a long fish i almost wish i had my board with me just out of curiosity on this thing he's not you don't have a lot of weight to him but man it's a long fish get this hook out we're gonna get her bait back too again just a small catfish there that i cut up you know that piece of catfish them little dinks down there they're not going to sit there and just peck at it non-stop like they do to skip jack and if they do that's fine they're not going to tear it off the hook like you're like you're softer baits so you know catfish not the best bait in the world by any stretch of the imagination but it will stay in good condition down there so that when you do come across an active fish like this one right here look at the length on that thing man i guarantee that's if i had my board that's a 40 plus inch fish with a 25 pounders body he ain't got hardly no weight to him at all but man that's a long fish but that piece of catfish was in perfect condition down there when he come along so i've still got that the big head of that uh that catfish on that rod up there so hopefully a monster's gonna eat it i'm gonna let this in here go and then we'll get down there and get that other piece back down there all right guys let's say goodbye to this thing go down there and eat man you're too skinny for your size get out of here there you go all right let's check this bait here it ought to be in pretty good shape still you know i mentioned the height of it being real tough you usually don't even have to re-hook this catfish yeah it's still you can see there oh still in good shape overall so it's going right back down well we've reached that point in the morning it's about time for me to head out here but i came out here today with some skipjack and high expectations and that massive school of small fish just was not going to let me keep that skip jack on the hook so i improvised and you know when the river gives you dink blues by gosh you cut them up and use them as bait and it worked out for me i ended up getting that one pretty good size blue now he didn't have a lot of weight to him but he was a long fish for his size so it ended up being a pretty productive morning overall and i had a good time and that's all that matters you know i want to come out here and enjoy a peaceful morning on the river and catch some fish and i was able to do that again today so i'm going to get on out of here hope you all enjoyed the video i'll be back on here again soon i'll see you then [Music] [Music] you
