and my quilt top is complete wait a minute i think i missed something hi everybody it is april and i'm in my craft room and today we're going to make another quilt with nine fat quarters that will be done lickety-split the pattern actually looks like this there is a link to the original blog post about how to create this pattern that's in the description below i'm using created fabric i got two fat quarter bundles from walmart with five fat quarters each and then i've also got some fat quarters left over from the previous projects that i'm going to mix in so you only need nine fat quarters but you can use as many fat quarters as you like the more fat quarters that you use the more variety you will have in your pattern the quilt size will end up being 48 by 60. this quilt is a type of pattern that you can move your strips anywhere you want and use them however you want the most important part to remember is five strips sewn horizontally will be the same height as one strip vertically so let's go through the fabrics and then we'll get into the actual pattern so let's get started and cut some fabric we've got our stack of fat quarters so i'm going to get this edge as close together as possible when lining up my selvedges i actually usually do this part when i am and yep i'm going to say it i did it when i was pressing these don't tell anybody i'll lose my street cred if somebody finds out that i pressed something because i hate pressing it i'm gonna put my polka dots on top because it lined up worst on the left the left hand side is going to be my guide and i'm going to even up this side my selvage is the straightest part of my fabric so i can line up my selvage on the bottom and then wherever the fabric is over the furthest i will line my ruler up there so this guy is the furthest over and i'm just going to kind of flip and i can see that they're all lined up i'm going to grab at each corner and turn it around and put my selvage over this line so here you can see that my selvage is on the outside of that line and actually i have a little bit of wiggle room here but since i am okay with my 20 and a half inch mark here i'm not going to worry about this in case one of the selvages below is larger i put my weight here to hold that end down and i'm just going to cut along this line i'm going to line my ruler up on the 20 and a half inch mark and then i'm going to line my ruler along this edge of the fabric because i know that this edge has been cut and it's straight i'm going to put my weight at the end and i'm going to cut for my four and a half inches i know this line is straight i know this line is straight and i know this line is straight so i'm going to cut on this line flip these around i'm going to flip it this way so i can cut with my right hand which is how most of you all will be doing it because you know we left handers we're special so i make sure i line up four and a half inches there's my four and a half scoot it over a little because it's over okay i've lined it up along the bottom i'm going to put my weight on it and i've got four and a half measure twice cut once and we're going to cut out as many four and a half inch strips as we can get out of this fat quarter so our strip is 20 and a half by four and a half i would suggest for your first quilt to make four blocks with five strips those will be placed horizontally and then the rest of your strips you'll just place vertically in between around those four blocks i have some directional fabric if it bothers you if your directional fabric doesn't face the right way you will want to make your directional fabric part of your horizontal blocks so you can just set all that fabric aside into one stack and you know that you need to place it specifically so that when your block is done it will all look you know the right way i can't think of the word right now i'll think of it it'll come to me so it will all look yep maybe it won't come to me it should come to me i don't feel it coming to me okay how about this so it will all look so it will all look structured so i've got my stack of my horizontal and my other stacks of my non-horizontal so here's one that is directional i'm going to try and make sure that my directional fabric is in my blocks that will be horizontal so i will mix them in with my non-directional fabric so i will be making four blocks that look like this so sew your four blocks together and then we'll meet back at the design wall if you struggle with decision making then here is what i want you to do i want you to take a piece of fabric and lay it down i want you to take next piece of fabric that you see and if it's not the same as what you already have in your block lay it down take the next piece and take the next piece and take the next piece and sew those together and make your block do not overthink this this is not a quilt to be over thought it is just a quilt to have fun with once you've decided how your strips are going together you are going to sew them each strip a quarter inch and you're going to sew five of them together to make one of your horizontal blocks i've finished sewing my blocks and now i have the blocks on my design wall be careful when you're doing your directional fabric sometimes it's going to turn upside down and i'm not that particular that i'm going to rip that out and re-sew it if you want to rip it out and re-sew it more power to you so what i've done is here's a block here's a block here's a block and then i have one more because i said i was going to do four and i think i'm going to kind of put it right here and then i'm going to take my leftover strips and fill it in if you struggle with decision making just start picking up pieces of fabric and putting them on the wall let's go here [Music] that's it i'm going to sew all this together and i will show you my finished product my quilt top is complete i am very pleased i added this black real skinny border to the main quilt and then i added this paint splatter border to that and you can see how it frames the outside of the quilt so do you think that it was worth it adding this border to get that frame or would you have been okay with just adding the splatter border or would you have just used the splatter fabric as the binding on your quilt and skipped all the extra work that the borders cost you let me know in the comments below this quilt can be as big or as small as you want this is now 56 by 68 since i added a one inch border all the way around and then a three inch border all the way around thank you for watching have a great day eat some chocolate and be kind to everyone until next time bye nope it's creating so let me put it this way let me do this over again three yard quilt project three yard quilt project that is you can go now i'm just gonna eat some chocolate
