hi i'm donna jordan from jordan fabrics today i'm going to officially start my holiday sewing every year when the weather warms up i spend a lot of time outside and i don't realize until fall days come and it starts to get a little bit colder but i haven't left enough time to get all of my holiday sewing done so even though it's only june right now i'm going to get started now so i can have everything done ahead of time and enjoy the holidays a lot more now halloween is the first big holiday that i like to decorate for so i'm going to make this table topper called spellbound this is a pattern written by deb grogan from the quilt factory and i'm going to try to show you all of the steps so that if you want to make one for your house you can follow along with me now this pattern uses a combination of patchwork in the middle and then appliques around the edges there so we have a nice witch hat some bats a very cute spider there so we're going to use a fusible method to get these appliques on there and then we will stitch them down afterward now when i make a pattern i usually choose different colors than what's shown on the front of the pattern but i actually have the exact prints that are used so that's what i'm going to do this time and here's all we need we need a set of charms these are five inch squares two and eight yards of an orange one and three eighths of a light background and five eighths of a black print now i'm going to work on the patchwork first and then we'll work on the appliques afterward now i can't give you all of the sizes that you need to cut because it's not my pattern but i've made quilts from this pattern designer before and they're very well written and easy to follow so what i'm doing here is smoothing it out on my ironing board i do like to iron everything up before i cut it because the cutting will be more accurate and i won't have any wrinkles so everything is cut out except for the appliques which we're going to do a little bit later using some paper and some fusible but right now let's make some half square triangles to make the half square triangles we're going to mark the back side of all of these background squares so i like to use a pencil and just make a light line right across the back side from corner to corner now we're just going to take a dark square one of these lights that's drawn on put them right sides together and stitch a quarter inch away from that line on each side so i like to go down the one side and then just flip it around and go down the other side now we're simply going to cut right along that drawn line and i like to use my rotary cutter and plastic ruler here and then we're going to take them right to the ironing board put the light color down open this up and do a little finger pressing so that you don't distort that seam because we don't want it to bow down or bow up and then iron it first with the dry iron then with a little steam i like to trim these little bits called dog ears off here it makes the patchwork lay a lot flatter so now we can make some patchwork units with our half square triangles and some of the plane squares that we cut out earlier so the first one we're going to do takes one plain square and eight of these guys and it's basically a little nine patch so we're going to need four of those units the next one we're going to need looks like this and we're also going to need four of these units the last thing we need is just made with these small triangles and there's just going to be one block and it's going to go in the very center of the quilt now there's no special matching to get these sewn together just make the three rows and then sew those rows together same thing here i'll probably make two rows sew the rows together and over here so this half so this half and then sew the two halves together so i'm going to go ahead and get those stitched up really quick now we can put together the whole center of the quilt so this goes in the middle these go around four sides of it and then these will fit in each corner and the only thing i might do is trade around a little bit if i happen to get the same print right next to itself i could trade this corner with that one but otherwise looks pretty good actually i'm just going to sew it all together here's the whole center of the quilt but of course it's not going to be square like this it's going to be turned on the diagonal and then these triangles and this square are going to make up that corner so these three will get sewn together and then you could sew that right onto the quilt and that's what the pattern would have you do now i am going to make that corner section and applique it first before i put it on the quilt because i think there's a little less fabric that i have to hold on to while i'm manipulating it to get those appliques stitched down let me show you how to sew these corners onto this square it's always a little tricky when you've got triangles and squares so what you want to do is line up these straight edges here i'm just going to pin this guy in place so i remember where it goes and then i'm going to line up these raw edges here and stitch down here now the triangle tip is going to stick off the end and that's okay [Music] now this one we're going to line up these edges here and then i'm going to flip it over so i can start sewing at that end and again that tip is going to stick off there and then when we're all done and we open this up you'll see that make that makes a nice straight line now we're ready to work on the appliques i'm going to be using a fusible product here this is a paper-backed fusible webbing and you there's different brands pellon has a brand steam a seam has a brand but basically you want a fairly lightweight one that has paper on one side and the fusible gluey stuff on the other side the pattern comes with full size templates so all we have to do is put this with the paper side up over that template and then we are just going to trace around all the edges and i'm just going to use a pencil and even if my tracing isn't perfect when i cut i can smooth it out so i'm just going to go all the way around all the edges there's the whole spider and i'm just going to cut a little bit around it so i'm not working with too much extra paper here and now we're ready to iron it on i think i will cut this extra off too because i can use this it's kind of a big piece left here [Music] we'll use that for something smaller now before we iron this on we want to steam press our fabric because otherwise it could shrink a little azure steam pressing this product onto it so i'm going to make sure it's very well ironed and i'm going to steam it now i'm going to keep that paper side up so the fusible side is down on the fabric and it's on the back side of the fabric now every product you use has slightly different directions and you may have to change what you do a little bit depending on your iron but i can get this just steam pressed on or not steam press on just ironed with a dry iron onto the fabric here and i'm just going to move it slow again read the directions for your particular fusible product so that you make sure you do whatever those instructions are now we're just going to cut on those drawn lines there's a lot of different scissors you can use if you like little scissors use those i'm just very used to this size so i use it for just about everything so just try to make nice smooth cuts and go all the way around all the edges once you have the whole thing cut you're going to want to peel the paper off of the back here now sometimes it's a little tricky to get it started but once you get it started you see that shininess that is the fusible glue stuff that's on the back side of our fabric so i'm just going to kind of carefully peel this off of all of these legs here that was easy and now this is ready to fuse onto our background now if you haven't steam pressed your background you're going to want to do that also before you put your appliques on then we're going to use the pattern as a guide here and also it comes with a layout sketch to help you put your spider on there and we're going to put this as close as we can to where it looks like the pattern and is nice and flat now before we fuse this on i like to use a press cloth this is just a scrap of fabric but i'm going to put something over my applique so that i don't get any of the fusible stuff on my iron now i'm going to steam it on and hold it in place again check the directions for your particular fusible but it is going to be really stuck down on there and that's going to make it really easy to stitch around the edges and get it sewn up i'm going to use my singer patchwork machine to do the applique work now mine has this set at number three for zigzag number two for the width 0.8 for the length of the stitch but your machine will probably have different controls and different numbers there but this is what we want the stitch to look like we want a fairly narrow zigzag stitch so something like that our pieces are fused on so they're not going to come off so we don't have to have a real tight stitch and i don't want it real wide because there's so much detail in the cut pieces that i don't want to lose that detail with my stitching so just adjust your machine so the stitches look about like that we need to use some sort of stabilizer underneath our applique and this is just computer paper you can also use newspaper or newsprint but you need something to keep the fabric and everything stable while you stitch so just put that under there it doesn't matter if it doesn't fit under the whole applique put your foot down and then i like to hand feed to see if my outside the outside stitch there is on the outside and then i'm just going to go now you're going to have to lift your presser foot and pivot a little to get around the tight corners and if your machine has an option of ending needle down that will make that process go quicker so just keep pivoting at all the corners turning and go all the way around that cute spider so my stitching is really all covering the applique and if you don't want to use a zigzag you don't have to you can even use a straight stitch because this is fused on and you can't really see my thread because my thread happens to be the same color as the spider but the idea is just to stitch this on so that it's nice and secure [Music] now all we have to do is trim off any black threads and take this paper off the back so just keep going around and pulling all that paper off and you might have to start in the middle but it will all come off now the spider has a cute little smile and some eyes and a little web there so i'm going to draw those on i'm just going to do it freestyle here i'm going to use a chalk pencil and draw my eyes and then give him kind of a wiggly smile so he looks happy and then i think i'll use a silver pen here for the web it doesn't have to be an exact i just want to do a real light line i might do another loop i made a little practice stitch here for the web and it's kind of a ziggity zaggy thing it's not real even it's kind of abstract and so that's what i'm going to do for this part here i'm still going to use a piece of stabilizing paper and i'm just going to start right at the intersection here and just follow that line very nice okay for the smile and for the eyes i'm going to use the same stitch for the smile but i'm going to use white thread now for the eye i'm just going to do a really wide tight tack stitch so i'm just going to hold it and keep it from moving very much perfect so the spider is all done the rest of the appliques are done using a similar method the only difference is on the hat and on the boots there's a little bit of orange that we're going to cut out and so right here that's going to get fused on top of the black and then i'm going to stitch all around the edges then i'm going to load this onto the quilting machine and we'll pick out a quilting pattern the quilt is on the machine and now we need to pick a thread so any of these colors will work we could use gray black orange i think i'm going to use this orange here because it won't show up too much on the background or on the hats and it'll blend in here completely and that's what i would like i wait all year just so that i can use this spiderweb quilting pattern it just looks so awesome and since i'm using solid black on the back side this is going to show up really well with orange thread [Applause] [Applause] here's the finished quilt it's a really nice size it's 54 inches square so it's perfect for a wall hanging or a table topper or a picnic blanket now you can see the quilting just barely on the top so if you look closely you can see some of the spider web stuff there but on the back side wow that orange thread just really shows really well from that backside there now i don't do a lot of applique quilts and i always wonder why when i do the appliques it's a lot of fun so that witch's hat here really fun three little bats flying and these these shoes are just darling now anytime you're doing something like this and you stop stitching and you're using a decorative stitch you can't always back tack so i like to use a product called fray check and i will put a drip of this right on the end of the stitching and that way none of these stitches will come undone and anytime you're not sure on around the appliques if you think it might fray or something you can use this it dries clear and it's a great product i've got the black binding which matches the back side there really a fun project really satisfying to make thanks for watching our tutorial today on how to make the spellbound quilt we hope you enjoyed it now we're going to have another giveaway we did a tutorial on how to make this quilt it's called double vision
