hello and welcome back to the reapers so today we're going to do a much requested video um we're getting fairly popular as a group now and as a result we're getting a lot of people into dcs world which is great that's what everyone wants the more people we can get into dts world the bet better it will be the more money they'll get them and then the more planes they'll produce and the more campaigns and missions and it's just better for everyone great and the only slight problem is a lot of people that are getting into dcs world are not you know completely computer literate uh like me i'm not very i'm not much of a gamer i lucky that i have my boys around to help me but some people do struggle so i figured let's make a a very basic how to get into dts world video right down to the basic level of what button to click and where and and how to get it all going and hopefully it will help some people so we're just going to do it from ground up so you've got your computer here's your computer windows screen we're going to go to the internet now here's google um um that's just my default search engine i'm going to type into it eagle dynamics dcs you use that search that should get them and the first one that comes up there digital compact simulator right so the very first thing i've been presented with is home download uh dts world 2.5 download that is the active version at the moment so it's nice and simple now you may be watching this video in a couple of years time in which case this may be slightly different it may be not it may not be 2.5 anymore in fact it probably won't but it should make it relatively obvious which is the active version maybe it'll be three three point five four something like that uh so that's nice and clear so bosh let's download it right now we're presented with a screen this is a very important screen excuse me i've got a really sore throat today uh right so um basically to play this sim you've got to have a decent um gaming pc i guess that's the best way to describe it and it tells us our minimum requirements absolute minimum requirements to to make dcs work is here uh so we need um windows 7 8 or 10 i would recommend windows 10 although we do have guys on seven uh directx 11 that's something that you should have anyway if not it will it will install that for you a cpu it says an i3 although to be honest i recommend an i5 at the minimum um it says you need eight gigabytes of ram from my tests with dcs world at this point which is 2.5 you really need the 16 gigabytes anything below and it really struggles is what i found uh free hard disk 60 gigabytes so that's easy to sort out if you run it on a normal type of hard disk a disk type hard disk it will be slow loading times will take ages because it is a really big sim i would suggest having a fast access ssd i've tried it on both and an ssc is definitely the way to go video card so if you don't know about graphics video cards it's something you need to get into you need an absolute minimum of an nvidia gtx 760 to be honest i recommend the minimum of the 900 series or above from our personal testing with 2.5 so that's the minimum recommended uh to have the kind of thing that cap has when you see the videos again windows 10 uh an i5 minimum that's what i've got uh 16 gigabytes of ram uh and it says here in brackets this is important 32 gigabytes if you're going to do a heavy mission every mission that we do basically remove is is heavy mission i've only got 16 gigabytes around that's what i can afford at the moment and i really struggle uh but that's how it is um 120 gigabytes on a solid state drive i'd rather recommend that anyway to be honest even for the minimum um nvidia of 1070 which is what i've got minimum and that's recommended yep that's fine and um and a decent joystick as well and here i don't use vr but here is the vr settings uh if you want to go into that bit more right so simple as that so you're going to click download here and you're going to be presented let's click it with this bar up at the bottom if you are on windows 10. do you want to what do you want to do with this you want to click up save as and you're going to put it somewhere safe usually so you would have somewhere like this downloads then you would click save and it will it will work its way from there basically you'll save that and then it will say well do you want to run the dcs installed you'll say yes and then it will start downloading dcs from the internet and that will take a long time because it's many many gigabytes of data but essentially it will all do that itself so that's it and that's it installed at that point so let's just close all of this so that's it installed you'll be presented with an icon like this i've got two point dcs for 2.5 so that's going to fire her up okay it's loaded up and we're presented with this which is our main menu uh so let's look at the things that we've got in our main menu um so up here is probably the most important things so this icon here is your module manager so um dcs world is essentially just an an empty shell in which you uh buy and install modules a module is for instance a harrier a harrier is a module or an f5 tiger that is a module or combined arms to use ground vehicles that is a module that's how dcsworld works this is the module manager which allows you to uh manage those modules obviously so the first thing when we go in here we're presented with is install modules so if you've gone and bought say an f-15 or something and you've got the key you'll be given a key code which will come through the internet via email and you're wondering well how do i get to fly my f-15 you come in here and you will be presented with install modules i've got these ones that have been presented to me world war two asset pack and normandy map so i've purchased them with my money but i've not installed them at the moment the reason i haven't installed this because i don't have any disk space left um but this is where your f-15 will come up and you'll set your club kit and you'll click ok and that will go and install your f-15 okay a quick look around here so here's modules that you have not bought yet that you can buy and you scroll down a gazelle under mirage and these things and you can go and buy them from here if you like uh available download content here uh so here are things like campaigns campaigns here that you can buy so for instance this is for the albatross you can buy it it'll be a series of missions you can buy for 10 um that you can fly these are single player missions i believe so if you don't want to be on the internet flying with other people and a lot of people don't that's that's fair enough um they come here and you can buy these um these campaigns that you can run um i'm sure they're very good uh terrains same thing if you um want to buy a certain terrain like you've got nevada you've got normandy and whatnot you can come here and purchase and install it okay so that's that installed once you've got certain modules installed so here are all of caps modules that i've got installed you can oh what's that something avionics didn't know that anyway you can do things with your existing modules turn them off and on check the serial number you can delete them if you want i don't know where you would want to but you can do that there if one's playing up you can delete them okay campaigns that you have so i have any campaigns because we make all our own campaigns but you would have your campaigns there that you've purchased terrains so these are terrains that i have and like they're just modules so you can do the same thing with them uh so that's that i'm going to cancel out of there that's the module manager next options very important one again you come in here you're first going to be presented with your system options i think this essentially means graphics options basically so i just set mind best thing rather than fiddling with all this stuff here unless you're a real computer guy and most people aren't um the best thing is just to go low medium high or vr if you're vr click on vr if otherwise i just clicked on high because i just about qualified for the high and you can tweak this stuff i don't know what most of it means but if you're an intern if you're a computer guy then you'll know what that means the one that i found useful is to click on vsync that's one i do use um helps with my video recording but other than that i don't know so that's that controls uh this is a real art form in dcs so every time you get a module or an aircraft you have to set up the controls and it's this is just one aircraft here and you can see there are hundreds of controls it's an absolute nightmare when you start because there's a perception that you have to set up all of these controls in reality you only have to set up about three to five percent of these controls still very difficult thing to do for most people and hence i'm making um a bunch a series of videos of how to set up the controls on each plane it's going to take me a while to do them all but so for instance if you just bought an av8b harrier then you can go to youtube and search grim reapers that's two words setting up controls or setup controls and you should get through to one of my videos that shows how to set these controls up and then we can all have them i'll just do a little guide just showing you which ones need to set up and which ones are superfluous uh so that's that that's something that's essential you can go to um you can go to gameplay here you can set some options up this isn't something i ever mess with so i don't even know what's on here but if you want to make it easier or harder for yourself you can do that and carry on this you can audio where you can change your sounds a bit misc i don't think it's everything anything i've ever played with special same thing and vr if you've got vr set so that's your options so you need to go in there you'll need to set up your controls if you have aircraft right so down the bottom here are the list of modules that you can get for dcs you see i can scroll along if it's highlighted in color then you own that module if it's black and white like that one there then you do not own that module um nothing really else to say about that it tells you what version um you've got at the bottom there and versions are very important when it comes to easier so we will talk about that shortly before we go on to that let's have a quick these the game options here so if you want some instant action if you just don't want to mess around around you just want to quickly fly on single player i.e not on the internet instant options and here are the list of planes that you have that say today i would like to fly my f-86 and i want to fly my quick cold start you'd literally just click on that and nevada and you'd get an option to fly and it will let you fly a cold start and that's that and there's a bunch of missions that these quick missions that come with each plane then there's create fast mission so if you just want to create a rough mission like hello i want to today for my spitfire from that place i want to start from a runway i want to make it difficult third of all caucuses here's my weather and so on here's the time i want to do it if you want to do advanced mode you can make it a little bit more advanced so if you want to add some bad guys you can say attack planes minimum fighter planes and you can add some hostile planes and stuff like that so that's a nice little thing to play around with and it's very very easy to use and when you're ready you can just click fly and off you go cancel that cancel that uh next mission uh these are from memory a series of pre-made uh missions that come with each aircraft uh so if i want to fly my faded saber uh there's some missions uh that came with when i bought this module i want to fly a flight suit that's a bad one for enough modifier mig sweep i can just click on that there and i can just get punched straight into a single player mission and i'm doing a big sweep so that's that in addition you can make your own missions and add to this uh list but that's a little more complicated we'll have to do that in a different video campaign never done one of these before i believe again this is a single player type campaigns that you get with some of the modules so i want to fly my figgin it comes with this whatever that word says response so that's a campaign and you can go okay and start that campaign and it will just be a series of missions i've never done it myself but i'm sure it's all very good and good for learning your aircraft cancel that uh uh i i guess as well if you've bought a campaign it will also appear in that campaign option there multiplayer this is what dcs is all about for me not everyone like what we play and that's fine but this is um i like fi i only fight against humans i like fighting against humans so i click here and what we're presented with is a big list and it looks very complex at the beginning it's actually quite easy so each one of these is what we call a server um there are lots of all these servers probably 150 or so there for instance oh look at that top one that top one is the grim reaper's training server that's one that one of our members has opened very kindly or free to use uh actually it's not free to use it's password protected but essentially it's very easy to get the password so it's essentially free to use it tells you information about the servers that one there is whether the password is required or not that one there is whether an integrity check is enabled or not and i would suggest going on a server where it has that shield ping that's how fast the internet is um reacting if you like so the lower the ping the better the higher ping the laggier it's going to be when you get into the server depending on your location and the location of the server there's the same name the server there's the map the server is running there's the name of the mission that's how many players there are in the server four at the moment in ours and 20 available total and that's what time it is in the server um so it'll take a while oh yeah and you can create your favorite so if you don't want to have to search this whole list again when you um when every time you come in here you can just click on that star there and that will save that as your favorite so that china's chinese server will always was good to see this chinese service coming out now anyway that will uh save that for you so it'll always appear at the top like i've got the grim reaper server okay um if you want to do a bit more in-depth searching you've got criterium here from which you can search this list of servers if i want one that's got a certain amount of players that i want one that's got less or equal ping if i want one that's got part yes passwords or no passwords and so on and then you can click uh this is a little temperamental in the last a few um season uh versions of dcs this list here um if sometimes you'll find it doesn't show anything at all in which case you can wait for a while and then click that there which is to refresh and you can get a new list sometimes it bugs that's just the realities of dcs in which case you'll exit back to the main menu and go back in sometimes it'll bug again so you can exit and you're going to exit the game completely start the game up completely back into multiplayer maybe do another refresh so you have to do these little things sometimes if this list is empty and it usually gets back to working if all of this still doesn't work and you still can't find anything on the list then it's very possible that you have a aversion problem that is a common thing with dcs and we'll talk about that very shortly if you have a small friend server and it doesn't appear up on here for some reason which is very common when you're running just a very small server you can connect just by their ip they will tell you their ib whoops let's change my name while we're here that's my name um then you can go connect ip you can type in that ip here with the port ideally and they will know what that port is and what the ip is and you can type in the password and you can go on to the server that way so that's multiplayer and that's roughly how you do it if you want to join one you just click on one of them and click join there and you're good to go basically okay so that's that logbook encyclopedia um that's there if you can use but we're not going to go through it training um yep very useful way to learn your aircraft and it does take a long time to learn these aircraft so i'm going to learn my digging today and i want to learn air-to-ground a-rack m70b rocketbots click on that and click start and it will run you through um a scenario and it will give you orders on the screen it's not the easiest thing to use but it is a good it is a good way to start if you're on your own if you don't have a sherman or someone telling you what to do you'll fly through the mission you'll be presented with comments up here in text telling you what to do now what i found the best way to do is hover your finger over the pause key on your keyboard you'll find out the top right of your keyboard every time a message comes up you hit pause it'll freeze everything and then you can sit and spend some time reading and absorbing that message before you actually go in and and do the um do the attack if you don't do that and you misread the message you can't just rewind you have to restart the whole thing again and it's a pain in the butt so make use of that pause command and just very slowly step your way through it that's the best way i've found to learn it or you can watch grim reaper's videos and that will show you how to do things as well and you can pour that's on youtube and you can pause as well and do that either way uh these are probably more professional because obviously grim reapers aren't professional um guides but you they give you a good enough idea right training replay not something i'd really want to mess with it's really if you want to go and do uh filming and stuff like that but i don't really need to see i see any other use of the replay mission editor this is where you create your own mission from scratch in very high detail it's very difficult and there's lots of there's lots to learn there so it's not something we're going to cover today campaign builder similar to mission editor you can build uh campaigns from missions that we've created uh and that's about it so uh the only other thing to look at here is the version version is very important in dcs dcs is constantly being built it never stops being built it's um there's it's not a finished product like um you know the olden days where you had uh sonic with a hedgehog or something where it was just built and then that was it uh dcs constantly gets upgraded every few days and you have to make sure that you keep on top of the correct version if you don't then there'll be all sorts of problems you won't be able to find multiplayer servers things won't work you'll go to load missions and things won't work so that in this main menu you look at the bottom right there in small text you can see the exact version that you've got at the moment if for some reason you feel that that version may be wrong like maybe you can't find multiplayer servers or it's crashing a lot uh d6 is a very complicated application and it can get unreliable if you're not keeping up to date so we will exit and this is how we do that we're going to go to our start bar we're going to scroll down and ask this uh i'm going to go to start but yep that's right and we're going to scroll down here until we get to eagle dynamics and i think it'll always be under equinamx and we've got two options update and repair so if we want to update to the latest version we literally click update dcs world i've got early access it's a different version but essentially it's the same thing you click that it'll just run itself and it'll make sure you're updated to the latest version that's often a problem people get and a very easy solution if you're still getting problems and it's very common to still get problems um then there are likely two things that are at fault a you your computer isn't good enough and we looked at those uh requirements earlier on to how good your pc needs to be to run dcs a lot of people try and run it with a subpar pc you need a very good pc to run it and it just won't run the mission won't load it won't render properly it'll crash out because things have taken too long things like that so if you've checked and you're definitely sure that you've got above the minimum specification or the recommended specification still getting problems then this will be almost certainly your savior 95 of the time this happens to me all the time we get crashes i get problems you know got lots of modules to maintain you need to repair because like i said it's a complicated application takes about 200 gigabytes when you've got everything installed easily things can get damaged and and broken and it's not working so you need to repair it you go to here and you click repair and it will do it all itself there are different ways of repairing um however this is just the simplest way for a you know a new person to do it leave it running it'll just repair itself and like i said 95 at the time that will fix your problem and all of a sudden everything just works until it goes wrong again and then just come in here and repair that's why they added that feature in because it's such a volatile thing dcs world is so update and repair they're your best friends for getting it working um if you get further problems you can go to the ecodynamics website that we saw before you can write tickets to help tickets to eager dynamics that's one way of doing it there's also a user forum which you can go on there and talk to other users because you do get problems some of our guys get problems really good pcs but they still get problems because conflicts you know stuff i can't possibly understand um and they can get help there that's all the advice i can think for we've gone over all of the basics so get into dcs don't be put off by its complexity and um yeah make use of of the forums and the economics website and make use of the grim reapers youtube and contact us if you need us right that'll do enjoy and we'll see you later
