[Music] look guys even I can admit when a logo starts to get a little self and diverse DreamWorks team logo up Dayton's Sun interesting same flying intros the other two but not to Berk this time sort of a smart play when the movie is at least partially about Berk being less than just the actual land more about the people work out well for as go I don't think I mentioned into how amazing and perfect take up sword is for him enemies assume it's a sword even though it's basically just an overdrive to contain the fire it's never gonna cut anyone but it's great at freaking people out parrying and when hiccup guides his opponent's weapon between the rods he can disarm them easily all defensive and showmanship which is very hiccup anyone can swing a sharp sword he invented something mostly harmless because that's how he is also past good kai early everyone has awesome new Dragon Scale armor and if you're paying attention you probably noticed they all have helmets modeled after their respective dragons [Music] making new friends I have said at least a couple people every time I bring up long takes and fully computer-generated scenes with movies but I keep doing it 50 seconds with the camera spinning around following the action from character to character and starts and ends on Astrid it's no small feat 1000 plus frames with no cut is impressive and engaging brings you into the scene as a participant whether you notice the one or not you always have my back ride we had a clear precedent that the kids need the Dragons to succeed and would all be dead without them to the points that they probably aren't that worried because they know the Dragons will take care of them fine and Ragan's skimming the water will never get old yes a spark you still managed to get that line and after all but this time it's not to us it's to the new dragons right away we can easily see that Berk is way overcrowded which is a solid reason to find a new home please oh it been a year in Kirk's position encourage exposition and even more reasons to leave I'm just saying I've got enough to be sad about I don't need to miss perfectly suitable perk as well they can bet otherwise healthy now yeah that's it no toad apparently Gobber is the only one who realizes it yes he is Cate Blanchett is always a winner flying Palin keen that's pretty sweet we get to marvel at another inventor but also feel icky because if I treat his dragons yeah seems dragons do how to make dragons more terrifying so they essentially snuck 3d rich Sanchez into this movie and voiced him with 80 year-old F Murray Abraham and all I can think is yes more of this seriously he's a distinct villain is more of a Moriarty than anything else they make it seem like he's just an insane shot with a crossbow and knows exactly where to kill the dragon but we find out it's just a tranquilizer later lending to him being more of a hiccup antithesis little beard continuity Stoics beard is shorter still an exquisitely beautiful beard but his braids are a little less intricate than later on as well legends tell of ships the sail too close to it only to drop off the edge of the world a totally fantastical story that would be totally realistic there would be no recovering from this fall people and Dragons no more hiccups memory might be a little revisionist well here's the thing that I'm willing to believe stoic speaking to his very young son can drop his guard and be honest assuming later he'll have to push his son to kill dragons because it's the Viking way but isn't this actually a solid reason to explain why hiccup might grow up with an empathetic heart his father's goal from the time he was young was to end the fight not kill all the dragons that would stick with you and I love it it's funny in any other movie a character walking along the edge like that would be tense but in Berk there's a permanent safety net there's actually more depths of that than I initially realized toothless is the Alpha he can make stormfly do whatever he wanted her to do but he's still playing so that's like not abusing your power winning the attention to detail and beauty in every frame has always is off the charts this sunset the lighting in colors and reflections a sunset hiccup shared with his dad now currently showcasing how much Berk has grown vertically to accommodate the dragons have I ever mentioned the toothless as a wife when does it ever come up speaking of things that come up a lot and things I love every time especially given that I think the first movie was the first time I gave this a win reflections in pupils so realistic the way the horizon stays parallel to the ground even the vitreous fluid over the iris has its own reflective properties we're operating in a whole new level now morning a new friend of danger and protecting your new friend from filthy humans --is and while we're talking about things that dreamworks always knocks out of the park here's some breathtaking lighting look at the way the light rays shift as toothless moves around also flirting I'd rather shovel poop all day than watch that yeah and it appears snotlout has been since Weis have been encircling him since the beginning of this scene just as an aside the first thing I said about this movie to Julia was that the entire island would be covered in dragon poop just there would be nowhere to walk looking up would be a death sentence I know we all just kind of take it for granted at this point but look at that dart the rust the feathers the patina of a lighting hot spot just in this one freeze frame the amount of detail is astonishing the imperfections in the leather and the changing grain directions in the wood the contrast of daylight to the yellow glow of the lamp and I probably gonna write off a bunch more of the best details in the conclusion but look at the heat waves from the fire distorting the edges of Stoics chair and highlighting everything in a yellow glow it just can't with this movie you wish dragons to live free among us like equals a toxic notion my boy history has shown that we are the superior species you know the Nazis had pieces of flair that they made they see what I was saying about that slotted sword I'm winners we have to take this threats easy it's not low he's the one true heir and that's definitely something that matters not just anyone can ride a dragon and people notice that sort of thing and it matters I say Berk is wherever we go he could have said oh did wills it and we all would have had a good double lab these references getting too esoteric no Ragnarok and Kingdom of Heaven fans esoteric peers today just keep moving forward pay no mind reaction asking you this question but nua t grump has always been super lazy and of course he's gonna need to take a nap during this long flight that's because the world is actually round globe heads open your eye space is aligned okay I can now comfortably confirm that the light period has not actually been space to teleport and the plasma glass is just misdirection for turn invisible fury space like she thought she was being toothless off or deaf grippers looking at that Apple off his tusks I thought that yes I do I think Thor from lots of things not least of which cork it's not your fault you have the body of a Norse God I myself of the same problem it's still too early for spoilers Gobber does have the same problem as a particular Norse God died and made you chief ah classic dead dad joke sleeping with his favorite chew toy also the most unbelievable thing in a movie about Vikings with dragon friends is that hiccup would have any room on that bed 30-pound dogs take up more space than most humans hide-and-seek it's weird how facial expressions can speak volumes I know there was some backlash about the light Furies designed seriously though why can't she have a name I'm so tired of writing and now saying light fury let's call her Lyra anyway in nature especially among birds and reptiles sex can't usually be distinguished by outward appearances and in birds females are sometimes the larger sex and since they have no need of attracting mates that falls to the males are usually blander looking but all that aside as far as keeping it interesting goes hello dainty it's still powerful library is a little prance around she's so regal I just think it would be boring if she was a mirror image of toothless and the sound design of these two white Flynn's [Music] [Laughter] dragon cringe the ever-changing sparkles on her wings I couldn't it's the expressions these dragons make I swear I've seen my dog make that exact face here's something you don't always get an animation granted timing is harder in live-action but this scene starts in the dark before the Sun has started to come up and slowly brightens as the morning progresses to where you see the Sun rising technically lowering on the cliffs behind them until it's full morning as she flies away in an inferior movie this conflict could have been used for force well conflict toothless's Mady can't fly alone so hiccup could have refused to build him a new tail or even pretended like it wasn't possible but no he loves toothless so the moment he realizes his best friend is in pain he starts working on it true love yes there's also the side goal of getting wiry to stay but that's also about toothless as happiness dragons do shed a lot and make excellent fireproof paint apparently Wiggly but sour wipe wind sounds terrible but I stand by and toothless truly loves hiccup the pet owner relationship can be confusing but I don't see this as a subservient request it's more of a courtesy what friends do for each other even if one of them can fly and breathe fire looks like Danny I mean velka for about the iron flame into trappers and how she could literally be flying a hundred feet higher but what's funny is that it actually does make sense here for one it's not like dragons have altima ters and two it's clearly an overcast foggy day so she wouldn't been able to see anything for much higher other people flying dragons on clear days just when you think they've said everything they needed to say or could say about flying in the other two movies this one just about blows it out of the water at least technically a testament to the digital artists and animators that we spend over three minutes just flying above and in the clouds with these two getting to know each other watching the wind whipping in slurries wings giving us the feeling of weight and tangibility while the sound design sells every wing flap an airburst incredible incredible the high authority keys got it and Northern Lights hand-holding yeah I have a parasitic twin but you don't see me limping around about it the filmmakers attention to detail goes beyond the writing the art and the animation they were so concerned with some of the jokes that one in particular they did pre screenings for the amputee coalition apparently he was met with laughter man hiccup has really upgraded his gliding wings which are basically just plane flying wings now he does flap so they're like zeitgeist with less one woodchipper Oh win and ignite itself xenomorph spoke less cuddly I'm stranded on some glacier somewhere even the baby dragon is backing away from rough night and let's give Kristen Wigg a heaping of wins for this monologue specifically designed to be unlikable that line between queasy and awe your jaws down put you closed it quickly to avoid potential embarrassment and what it's this live-action non-human realism has reached new levels in the back of my mind I've been sort of waiting for the yangtze moment in this film and now that it's here I just wanted more of this filmmakers doesn't have to be on see or sigur rós just find some ethereal music creating artists and put them in your movies and the bioluminescent backlight effect the idea that this is where dragons actually belong where they've likely evolved and where you can see their true colors untouched by the Sun these movies never cease to soon for a lack of a non cliche capture my imagination as a person in his 30s the score the colors the soaring this cave is resplendent is this like that dragon equivalent of a trampoline park if so sign me up and teach me to fly find in a hidden world is that another light fury a liar e 2.0 if you will are we just are we ignoring that there's home began in Drago's be wildebeest and more light Furies I guess it makes sense if grimille only cared about hunting and killing night Furies hello I figured that whole courtship thing out sometimes but in the end there's no greater gift than love words to live by I miss stoic but realizing his father's words apply to more than just a significant other everyone you love in every different way is the real lesson for hiccups it totally taken not with her life on the line self for at least personal sacrifice the other movies toyed with the idea of the dragon sentience but it's pretty clear in this movie which is an interesting progression I like that this annoyed face or depressed even from toothless isn't just that his master made him leave toothless was forced to choose between saving hiccup or staying with his new walk murder murder parents anyway he chose hiccup because he loves hiccup but he can still be upset and then he goes through a bunch of other emotions in this conversation melancholy happiness when hiccup says he should go back and be with liar II but that hiccup can't go it's all perfect and sets up the higher thinking that happens here with grimille again toothless has to make choices sorry hiccup both bros before female dragons only apply until you meet the one satisfying callback - they're all but failure in the beginning with dragging and saving their butts they're finally working as a team and not relying on their dragons that easy wriggle love teamwork that is no less terrifying in slow motion framing censoring that's his helmet flying off after being stepped on so like a dragon Juke applying the lessons from your gif save him self-sacrifice for his best friend thank goodness these movies make it art and these aren't tears my eyes are sweaty saving your BFS PFF [Applause] [Music] and this theme oh the only fault of this movie is not using it more but the sparing usage is like a deep sigh after the tension of this finale lead them to the hidden world you'll be safe there and just in case it feels all too neatly wrapped up with no explanation it's really that simple but also the people of Berk will be safer after they tamed the Dragons the only reason they weren't safe is because everyone wanted their dragons go toothless go also really appreciate the lack of a White Fang goodbye Oh ending their partnership the inverse of the way it began okay maybe it's reading into it too much but there are theories about Gobber from things he said in the last movie and DreamWorks could have easily capitalized on some easy representation but allowing him to stay questioning or hidden if you will feels respectful of people in that situation and in a way is a representation of a large group of people I don't know I'll happily listen to other people's opinions with first-hand knowledge a stuffed fish meat before we transition to something epic and beautiful let's just appreciate the peach fuzz that's been blowing in the wind and lighting up in the Sun this whole movie there were dragons when I was a boy and if you have trouble just imagine dragons the real win is that that's the first line of the book series it's done crying baby Knight enlight theories are clearly wife wins my lights that quick moment where you see his pupils dilate once he recognizes hiccup no hesitation not just a simple head touch this time a reunion of best friends so hugging let him come to you but then a new generation rebooted with such a simple gesture that's so meaningful wait if you can't get a pure black knight Fury from these two this means that there had to have been black female night Furies so that pretty much fixes the whole she's too feminine looking issue she's a different species when dragons can return in peace you know one of the first things I said in How to Train Your Dragon was that my niece was really sad when she found out she couldn't have a pet dragon no maybe we'll be ready for them to come back sooner one more incredible Yan Zi song over the credits and all the relationship building throughout the series what a great conclusion to this story I'm sure they could get more mileage out of this world than these characters but there's something very pleasing about a full and complete arc for the main protagonists especially hiccup who goes from scared with smart and compassionate outcasts trying to prove dragons are inherently evil to confident and capable outcasts trying to spread his love of dragons to the world to chief Falls people who finally learns that to truly love dragons doesn't let them live far away from humans this movie specifically was almost more toothless this story than hiccups like a coming-of-age story for him filled with tough choices it's always hard to pick a favorite in a trilogy like this where it's a complete story like I guess the best way to say it is that I like the trilogy more than any one movie but two might still be my favorite there are just some exceptional toothless hiccup moments that nothing else compares to but seeing hiccup make this sacrifice for one of the great loves of his life mhm and then getting him all grown up and reuniting with toothless to share his love of dragons with his kids is irreplaceable as well it's the same degree nothing will ever beat the first time they take flight through the cliffs together in the slow trust they build first out of necessity but eventually out of true friendship you know it's a great set of movies when it's that hard to decide which is best and just like its predecessor is one of the most beautiful animated movies to date simple things like a wing cutting through falling water or the swirl of a cloud behind another wing the movement of asteroids hares hiccup kisses her head just the insane detail and realism in the fur coat background details like fish meat always being pleased as punch no matter what's happening or even farther off dragons just flying around Berk out of focus the pollen kicked up by toothless is frolicking that makes you sneeze through the screen lighting and Dreamworks always blows my mind but it's even been stepped up from the past with new lighting engines making light reflect off grass with a green glow look at the luminosity shift on the moths wings the liquid fire dripping off of hiccup sword I mean do you see this what is this insanity it wasn't super clear boat from what I understand there was a draft of the script where the antagonist of the story would simply hiccups refusal to let toothless go and sometimes it shows criminals like I said he's the thinking man's dragon trapper nothing's accidental when it comes to old grimille but ultimately he's a means to an end that end being the lesson hiccup needed to learn as long as dragons are out in the open someone is gonna try to control kill steal or otherwise oppress them and that usually comes with danger for Berk as well I'm not trying to be cheeky here but if you follow the film's allegory - it's a logical conclusion hiccup solution for grandma's prejudice is essentially separate but equal even if hiccup was willing to be separate with them like the ultimate misguided Ally okay I'm being a little cheeky now my point is that it got a tad muddled I realize it's not at all what they were going for it's not a one-to-one parallel with anything in human history primarily because dragons aren't human actually do have different needs and operate on a different level from humans but it's one of the ways I could see fans getting upset and I've actually bred lots and lots and lots of complaints from people not really grasping why there wasn't another option beyond sending the Dragons away couldn't they have tried harder to make it work wasn't that the message from the ending of - that no matter what they'd fight to be together well sort of but when you find a solution that doesn't include fighting isn't that worth it I personally loved a non-binary ending the dragons love their riders I honestly hesitate to call them owners because the relationships were more complex than that the dragons were only domesticated as much as they want to be if that makes sense so they played the beasts of burden role and stuck around because the partnership was mutually advantageous in multiple ways not least of which were genuine two-way relationships but that doesn't mean all their needs were being met the only place for that is the hidden world so while they wanted to stay with their friends they also had an opportunity to be more fulfilled away from them who was all conveyed really well by toothless coming back to new Berk after saving hiccup he had a few options let him die which he wouldn't do because he loves him save him and drop him off at new Berk - then return save him and keep him there as his new pet but he made the sacrifice and did what was best for hiccup not out of duty but friendship or at worst a loyalty to the foundation of their relationship fortunately hiccup realized it wasn't fair and to love someone is to set them free and the writers did a good job of tying it all together to seem like the right decision even if it was tough and sad it's a challenge make a better world a world where we're worthy of dragons I don't know you missed if kids walk away from this movie with that message in hand I say job well done maybe they'll never get to write a dragon but there are plenty of ways for our society to soar above the clouds like planes if you're out of all planes didn't you next week a another brightly lit movie [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music]

I don't like THW, and I have made posts about why, but you are right, movies are made to be enjoyed, not torn apart. I still stand by what I have said about the movie, but I won't pretend that what I said was any more important than what anybody else thinks.

Its weird, but in this movie I didn’t really think of the bad guy as grimmel, I thought of it more as the idea of the dragons being taken away
