virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sin and bring us to everlasting life [Music] is [Music] glory oh [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] yes [Music] is [Music] is [Music] is [Music] is [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Music] jesus [Music] oh i knew you before you were born i dedicated you a prophet to the nations i appointed you but do not gird your loins stand up and tell them all that i command you be not crushed on their account as though i would leave you crushed before them for it is i this day who have made you a fortified city a pillar of iron a wall of brass against the whole land against judas kings and princes against its priests and people they will fight against you but not prevail over you for i am with you to deliver you says the lord the word of the lord [Music] [Music] [Music] i will sing i will sing of your song [Music] in your lord i take you let me never be poor to shame [Music] is [Music] you [Music] a to give me safety [Music] r [Music] for you are my hope oh lord my trust o god from my users [Music] is [Music] shall declare justice [Music] day by day your salvation o god [Music] is [Music] so [Music] a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters strive eagerly for the greatest spiritual gifts but i shall show you a still more excellent way if i speak in human and angelic tongues but do not have love i am a resounding gong or a clashing symbol and if i have the gift of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge if i have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love i am nothing if i give away everything i own and if i hand my body over so that i may boast but do not have love i gain nothing love is patient love is kind it is not jealous it is not pompous it is not over inflated it is not rude it does not seek its own interest it is not quick tempered it does not brood over injury it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices in the truth it bears all things believes all things hopes all things endures all things love never fails if there are prophecies they will be brought to nothing if tongues they will cease if knowledge it will be brought to nothing for we know partially and we prophesy partially but when the perfect comes the partial will pass away when i was a child i used to talk as a child think as a child reasoned as a child when i became a man i put aside childish things at present we see indistinctly as in a mirror but then face to face at present i know partially then i shall know fully as i am fully known so faith hope love remain these three but the greatest of these is love the word of the lord [Music] oh [Music] me [Music] is [Music] oh god [Music] my the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke jesus begins speaking in the synagogue saying today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing and all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth they also asked is this the son of joseph he said to them surely you will quote my quote me this proverb physicians cure yourself and say do here in your native place the things that we her were done in carponum and he said amen i say to you no prophet is accepted in his own native place indeed i tell you there were many widows in israel in the days of elijah when the sky was closed for three and a half years and a severe famine spread over the entire land it was to none of these that elijah was sent but only to a widow in zaraphat in the land of sidon again there were many lepers in israel during the time of elisha the prophet yet not one of them was cleansed but oni nemen the syrian when the people in the synagogue heard this they were all filled with fury they rose up drove them out of town and led him to the brow of the hit of the hill on which their town had been built to hurt him down the hedge law but jesus passed through the midst of them and went away the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus someone once described a prophet as one who comforted the disturbed and disturbed the comfortable and this is an apt description for the prophet jeremiah from whom we heard in today's first reading jeremiah lived about 600 years before jesus and lived at a time when israel was being threatened by corruption both from within its own government and by egyptian forces who were occupying the land this situation disturbed jeremiah because he loved his country and he loved his people and perhaps this is the reason why god called jeremiah to be a prophet but jeremiah wasn't too thrilled about being a spokesman for god he didn't want to be a prophet today's first reading relates to the call of jeremiah but the verse which follows the conclusion of the reading which we do not hear gives us jeremiah's response to god's call as at first jeremiah responds our lord god i know not how to speak i am too young however as it always is the case in each of our lives god got his way with jeremiah and jeremiah with great reluctance accepted god's call even though he knew the difficulty of being a prophet in his own country jeremiah began to preach jeremiah told the people rather bluntly that their own hope for survival their only chance for independence was to reform their lives and to turn to god for help jeremiah's message mate was met with great hostility and his words angered the people who basically responded who does he think he is telling us how we should live jeremiah jeremiah's preaching upset people so much that on one occasion the authorities had jeremiah publicly flogged on another they put jeremiah in the stockade and on a third they threw jeremiah into a dungeon in the end jeremiah was exiled to egypt where he eventually died we hear in today's gospel that jesus also experienced great difficulty and the pain of being a prophet in his own country in his own land his native place he too experienced the rejection of his friends and his neighbors and today's gospel shows us what happened when jesus preached his first sermon when jesus stood up and told those who were in attendance that the spirit of the lord was upon him and that he was fulfilling the scriptures some people were amazed but others were appalled isn't this the son of joseph they comment and then the comments get even worse we are told that when the people in the synagogue heard this they were filled with fury they rose up drove him out of the town and led him to the brow of the hill to hurl him down headlong jeremiah jesus many prophets were rejected and we know that in our own life our own world that rejection can be something terrible an awful thing and hopefully you have not had to experience this experience or endure this experience but my guess is that at some point in life you've had to deal with this most painful incidence we see many parts of our world and even in our own country people being rejected and unwelcomed for a whole host of reasons there are also times as well when just trying to lead a good christian life will get you rejected and maybe even persecuted it's also possible that we might have done some rejecting ourselves we might discriminate against people or as the expression goes people who are not like us or don't fit into our mold or see things the way we think they should be seen or even think the way that we think it's also possible that like the people in the synagogue we've also rejected jesus we may not have tried to hurl him down the hill but perhaps we have tried to silence the voice of jesus in our lives reject his words reject his call reject perhaps where jesus might be trying to lead us there could also be areas of our life that we prefer to hold on to that are not exactly godlike or measure up to the gospel challenge areas that we are not willing to change in order to conform ourselves more completely to the image and the example of jesus and that's a form of rejecting jesus and so today on this fourth sunday in ordinary time we are invited to see ourselves more fully as saint paul observes at the end of today's second reading we are invited to put aside what he calls childish things and look at those areas of our life where we might have been rejected or have done the rejecting and seek to heal them you may even consider looking at an area of your life where you may have basically shut jesus out and now ask him to keep your ears open to his voice so that like jesus who passed through the midst of the crowd who wanted to attack him and went his way we will pass through those things which seek to attack us those things that might lead us astray or throw us over a hill and walk more perfectly along the way that leads us to jesus as saint augustine once advised bestow yourselves and set your hearts on good things growing together with the good growing apart from the bad seek life run to him who is the fountain of your life and your most kindly redeemer will enlighten you with his brilliance i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things remain for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken to the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins i look forward to the resurrection of the dead the life of the world to come amen let us now turn to god in hope and seek those blessings that are promised to his children for the church that she may be continually strengthened as a light for the gift of faith and a beacon of hope for all people let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for our nation that god will continue to guide our country in the ways of peace justice freedom and to an ever greater awareness for sanctity of all human life let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for world and national leaders that they may turn to god for guidance in resolving conflicts and disputes non-violently and allow greater peace to reign upon the earth especially in ukraine let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for those who are affected by the extreme and adverse weather conditions may god relieve their suffering and provide neighbors and friends to reach out and [Music] oh [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father [Music] oh lord we bring to your altar these offerings of our service be pleased to receive them we pray and transform them into the sacrament of our redemption through christ our lord the lord be with you eternal god for in you we live and move and have our being and while in this body we not only experience the daily effects of your care but even now possess the pledge of life eternal [Music] for having received the first fruits of the spirit through whom you raised up jesus from the dead we hope for an everlasting share in the paschal mystery and so with all the angels we praise you as in joyful celebration we are heaven and earth [Music] is you are indeed holy oh lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore oh lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries for on the night he was betrayed he himself took breath and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] the mystery of faith [Music] is [Music] therefore oh lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to a second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you will to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs and with all the sins on whose constant intercession and your presence we rely for unfailing help may the sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray o lord advance the peace and salvation of all the world be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth with your servant francis our pope and wilton our
