so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so um good morning and welcome to the cathedral of the assumption on this eighth sunday an ordinary time as always we welcome our guests and we invite you to fully participate along with us please stand and let us join together in singing our opening hymn god whose purpose is to kendall number 905 in the hymnal [Music] is [Music] oh [Music] [Music] is [Music] rather than [Music] is [Music] uh [Music] foreign foreign [Music] um [Music] i love you lord my strength o lord my rock my fortress my savior [Music] my god my rock where i take refuge my shield my saving strength my stronghold i cry out praise be the lord and see i am safe from my falls [Music] here [Music] me [Music] the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the lord be with you i too agree all of our guests are with us for holy mass this morning at the cathedral and we also welcome back home seminarian michael schultz who is home for a winter break so michael is always a delight and a pleasure and a blessing to have you with us as we look forward to the lenten season that time of preparation and penance for us this being the last sunday that we will hear of the great alleluia and let us in a particular way be mindful of the events the horrific events in the ukraine so let us offer a special intention during holy mass for those good people including those who have already lost their lives our brothers and sisters we turn to the great mercy of god so let us acknowledge our sins as we prepare to celebrate the sacred mysteries i confess to almighty my brothers god sisters that i have greater sin in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done and what i have failed to do through my fault through my thought through my most grievous fault therefore i ask mary and the virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray from me to the lord may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us into everlasting life [Music] is [Music] glory to god [Music] is [Music] me [Music] is [Music] uh [Music] is [Music] is foreign [Music] jesus [Music] [Music] let us pray grant us o lord we pray that the course of our world may be directed by your peaceful rule that your church may rejoice untroubled in her devotion through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god for ever and ever a reading from the book of sirach when a sieve is shaken the husks appear so do one's fault appear when one speaks at the test of what the potter molds is in the oven so in tribulation it is the test of the just the fruit of the tree shows the care that it has been given so too does one's speech [Music] disclose the bent of one's mind praise no one before he speaks for it is then that people are tested the word of the lord [Music] lord it is good to give thanks to you lord it is [Music] r [Music] lord it is good to give you a just one shall flourish like the palm tree like a cedar of lebanon shall he grow they that are planted in the house of the lord shall flourish in the courts of our gods [Music] ah [Music] is [Music] lord it is [Music] a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters when this which is corruptable clothes itself with incorruptibility and this which is mortal clothes itself with immortality then the word that is written shall come about death is swallowed up in victory whereo death is your victory whereo death is your sting the sting of death is sin and the power of sin is the law but thanks be to god who gives us the victory through our lord jesus christ therefore my beloved brothers and sisters be firm steadfast always fully devoted to the work of the lord knowing that in the lord your labor is not in vain the word of the lord so [Music] shine like lights in the world as you hold on to the word of life [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to [Music] wow jesus told his disciples a parable can a blind person guide a blind person will not both fall into a pit no disciple is superior to the teacher but when fully trained every disciple will be like his teacher why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye but did not perceive the wooden beam in your own how can you say to your brother brother let me remove the splinter in your eye when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye you hypocrite remove the wooden beam from your own eye first then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother's eye a good tree does not bear rotten fruit nor does rotten tree bear good fruit for every tree is known by its own fruit for people do not pick figs from thorn bushes nor do they gather grapes from brambles a good person out of store of goodness in his heart produces good but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks the gospel of the lord [Music] yes my fifth grade teacher said that you weren't supposed to start essays or speeches with the words in my opinion but in my opinion the one of the most impressive and also disturbing scenes in film history is at the end of the movie the godfather so i'm not a expert in cinematography but i'll give you a brief recap of the scene michael corleone is desiring to be a member of the mob and its leader as the godfather and so in order to become the godfather he has to commit a great number of murders so it's very uh tragic and very disturbing but as an alibi he stands as the godfather to his nephews at his nephew's baptism and so while he's at the baptism all these murders are taking place and cinema as far as cinematography it's very impressive during a church the organ music builds and the ritual for baptism progresses do you reject satan all his empty works all his show the priest says to michael standing in the place of the child speaking for the child and as each of the lines continues in the baptism ritual you get a flash of a scene of a murder that's committing that's being committed simultaneously so it's it's a very impressive scene the way that they've orchestrated it is very impressive but it's also a very dark and a very disturbing scene in one hand on one hand you have a man standing for a child who is about to receive new life in christ who is about to become an adopted son of christ a member of the church and this man who is representing that child is saying that he rejects satan he rejects sin he rejects the empty works of the evil one and yet everything that he is saying externally is being contradicted by activity that is happening at the very same time orchestrated by his own hand i think that scene for me part of the reason that it's so disturbing is that at least in my own life it's so relatable every one of us come to this altar as sinners each of us that are reborn in baptism we through the voice of someone else our godparents have rejected satan have rejected sin has have rejected all of his empty show his empty works and yet we find ourselves time and again falling in sin at our baptism the priest hands us a light he takes from the easter candle which represents christ a flame and that flame is given to us and the easter candle as it represents christ it represents the light that burns within each of us the light that is supposed to burn so brightly that the rest of the world is changed in the opening prayer in today's holy mass we've asked god that the church might rejoice untroubled in her mission the church isn't just this building although that's nice the church isn't just the institution the church isn't just rome the church isn't just priests and bishops the church is you and me lumen ginseng the teaching from the second vatican council said that the call to holiness is a universal call the call to holiness isn't something relegated merely to monasteries for nuns or for monks to live their life in anticipation for the call to holiness is for each of us and that light which is given to us in baptism is supposed to radiate it's supposed to flow out to the rest of the world so that each of us as the gospel acclamation said shine like lights in the world holding on to the word of life the word of life that is jesus christ that scene is so disturbing from the godfather and it hits to the core of our sinfulness as christians each of us in our own lives we have moments where that light becomes dim in sin and at times it's possible that that light can be extinguished where we reject the grace of god we fall into grave sin and we have completely pushed god away not that he has abandoned us he is always with us but that we have pushed his light away we have said i choose the darkness notice in the life of christ the importance of light at jesus's birth it happens in darkness it's in the the dark night that a single star guides three wise men to the manger and it's there that only the light of christ shines notice how at the last supper it's night and what does judas do but he leaves the light he leaves christ who is the only light that shines on the evening of holy thursday even on good friday the sun hides its face in an eclipse at the moment of christ's passion on easter sunday it's before the sun comes up that christ is resurrected and on the evening of the first easter it's as dawn approaches that the two disciples say to jesus stay with us evening draws near the gospel teaches us that christ is the only light there are no other lights there cannot be any other true lights are possessions power rulers money pride shame anger all of these things cannot be the light of christ for us because if they are we slowly can become like michael corleone saying one thing with our life and yet conveying another with our actions with what we do on the inside with our relationship with god and how we express that to him and to one another now we're not going to end on a unhopeful note we have hope so stick with me praise god on that same easter sunday jesus appears to the apostles in fear think about peter think of how how horrified he was to see jesus just a couple days before he had denied jesus completely in the same way that michael corleone stood at the far lying peter lied he said i do not know him he was shrouded in darkness and what happens what are the first words that jesus says he says peace be with you he doesn't say what's wrong with you he doesn't say how could you do this he doesn't say you're damned for all eternity he says peace be with you and he follows it up by saying whose sins you forgive are forgiven whose sins you retain are attained the very first action that jesus does after his resurrection is an action of love for the church he institutes the eucharist before his resurrection and after his resurrection he institutes the forgiveness of sins by giving the apostles the authority to forgive sins that apostolic authority is still carried on today it's still passed on today the church teaches us in catechism and in the precepts of the church that we are to confess our sins at least once a year grave sins the sacrament of confession is probably one of the most underused sacraments in the church many people have had a hard experience with the sacrament of confession i was told recently of a story from a priest at the seminary and he's teaching us about confession confession and the importance of it and he said that his grandmother she had stolen um wood from a monastery so in a in a forest outside of a monastery she had stolen wood and she had a very tender conscience and she felt bad about it it was wood that had already fallen and for for our case it really probably wasn't that much of a sin at all it maybe wasn't even stealing she had taken wood in a forest that belonged to a monastery but she felt very bad about it and she went to confession to a priest and he he kind of berated her he said how could you do something like that and she was just mortified and later she went to confession to another priest and he said my dear you've already borne the weight of that sin and carrying the wood up the hill see the sacrament of confession it's understandable for many why this is a sacrament that is hard to participate in it's understandable that this is a sacrament that takes a lot of courage it's understandable that that many fear this sacrament but the light still shines in the darkness the darkness cannot overcome it you and i we we should want to be like the the tree that our lord describes in the gospel today that bears good fruit in the sacrament of confession we can take any part of our life any part of our life and we can know that it is completely forgiven it doesn't matter if you've been to confession a week ago or if you've been to confession 30 years ago consider going to confession to to bring all of your sorrows all of your sins anything that holds you back from loving god and from radiating that light to the rest of the world i'll close with this story saint margaret mary alico she's the promoter of the vision of the sacred heart so before her there was no real strong devotion to the sacred heart jesus appeared to her several times and he said i want you to start this devotion to the sacred heart and now we know it worked well the bishop didn't believe her the bishop said you're making this up you can't actually be seeing jesus and so the bishop gave her a test the bishop said the next time you see jesus i want you to ask him what the last thing i said in confession was so jesus appears to saint margaret mary and she says to him lord i i believe you but the bishop does not believe you this is going nowhere and the bishop said you have to tell me what the last thing that he told you in confession was i know um that's that's not really right but that's what he wants and then he'll believe me and then this devotion will be spread and you know what our lord said to saint margaret mary i forgot in confession jesus destroys our sins he cast them away from us he forgets them out of his own memory so that nothing as painful as it might be in our past can keep us from radiating the light of christ from shining for the rest of the world holding on to his word jesus christ in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen so by our catechumens and candidates who will join us at the lord's altar at easter time and enjoy the benefit the grace of those sacraments uh to please join me for the dismissal as we look forward to ash wednesday and our lenten retreat it is a very powerful and significant time for you uh that you grow closer to christ as michael shared with us that light within you will become brighter and we're going to notice that and celebrate that with you with great joy my friends go continue your prayer on wednesday continue your works of penance and reparation go in peace [Music] so [Music] so [Music] my friends our faith is the very source of our salvation our freedom and our peace let us profess that together i believe in one god the father maker of heaven and earth i believe in one lord jesus christ [Music] by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became is i believe in the holy spirit the lord [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign oh [Music] oh [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Music] brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god or almighty father oh god who provide gifts to be offered to your name and counter oblations as signs of our desire to serve you with devotion we ask of your mercy that what you grant as the source of merit they also help us to attain merits reward through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord for by his birth he brought renewal to humanity's fallen state by his suffering cancelled out our sins by his rising from the dead he has opened the way to eternal life and by ascending to you o father he has unlocked the gates of heaven so with the company of angels and saints we sing to him of your praise is without end we acclaim [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Music] you're indeed holy oh lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore o lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries whether or not he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of me for this is my body which will be given up for you similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] the mystery of faith [Music] is [Music] therefore oh lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son this wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving it's holy and living sacrifice but we pray upon the inflation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by his death you will to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary mother of god a sir joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs and with all the saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing health may the sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray o lord advance the peace and salvation of all the world pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth your servant francis our pope and joseph our bishop your kingdom there we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through christ our lord through whom you bestow on the world all that is good through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] [Music] the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say deliver us lord we pray from every evil grace is to grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress to await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ you said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you but not on our sins but on the faith of your church gracious to grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who
