the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the lord be with you offering mass this morning with special intention for the people of ukraine brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries i confess to almighty for my god and in my words in what i have done and in what i have failed to do through my fault through my thought through my most grievous fault therefore i must blessed mary all the angels and saints and few my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy upon us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life [Music] is glory to god in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory lord god heavenly king o god almighty father lord jesus christ only begotten son lord god lamb of god son of the father you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world receive our prayer you are seated at the right hand of the father have mercy on us for you alone are the holy one you alone are the lord you alone are the most high jesus christ with the holy spirit let us pray grant us o lord we pray that the course of our world may be directed by your peaceful rule and that your church may rejoice untroubled in her devotion through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever a reading from the book of ecclesiastes in a shaken sieve the rubbish is left behind so too the defects of a man appear in his talk the killed tests the work of the potter the test of a man is in his conversation the orchard where the tree grows is judged on the quality of its fruit similarly a man's words betray what he feels do not praise a man before he has spoken since this is the test of men the word of the lord is good to give you thanks o lord it is good to give you thanks it is good to give thanks to the lord to make music to your name almost high to proclaim your love in the morning and your truth in the watches of the night it is good the just will flourish like the palm tree and grow like a lebanon cedar it is good planted in the house of the lord they will flourish in the courts of our god still bearing fruit when they are old still full of sap still green to proclaim that the lord is just in him my rock there is no wrong a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians when this perishable nature has put on imperishability and when this mortal nature has put on immortality then the words of scripture will come true death is swallowed up in victory death where is your victory death where is your sting now the sting of death is sin and sin gets its power from the law so let us thank god for giving us the victory through our lord jesus christ never give in then my dear brothers never admit defeat keep on working at the lord's work always knowing that in the lord you cannot be laboring in vain the word of the lord open our hearts o lord to accept the words of your son hallelujah a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you jesus told a parable to his disciples can a blind man guide another surely both will fall into the pit the disciple is not superior to his teacher and the fully trained disciple will always be like his teacher why do you observe the splinter in your brother's eye and never notice the plank in your own how can you say to your brother brother let me take out the splinter that is in your eye when you cannot see the plank in your own hypocrite take the plank out of your own eye first and then you will see clearly enough to take out the splinter that is in your brother's eye there is no sound tree that produces rotten fruit nor again a rotten tree that produces sound fruit for every tree can be told by its own fruit people do not pick figs from thorns nor gather grapes from brambles a good man draws what is good from the store of goodness in his heart a bad man draws out what is bad from the store of badness words flow out of what fills his heart the gospel of the lord now i wasn't sure this morning whether to preach on these old people who are still bearing fruit or whether whether i was to preach on the rubbish is always what's left in the sieve draw your own anyway i'm preaching on the gospel this morning and i'm leaving the business terrible business of the ukraine to the bishops letter which i will read to at the end of mass this morning's gospel 14 years ago we were busily transforming the old family home into foyer retreat and we contacted the firm that had supplied our own kitchen in los video the firm was a characterful outfit trading out of a farmyard in the rural outskirts of preston we had spent a happy day there choosing our cupboards and marveling at the low prices for the real wood and as we toured the little showroom with malcolm the manager we could see and hear the whirl of the circular saw and see sawdust flying out of the adjacent barn door you would have to wear goggles there to avoid getting the flying dust in your eyes and i recall randomly thinking about jesus in the carpenter shop at nazareth and although with a much slower saw whether today's image of the moat in the eye the splinter in the eye came from hard experience jesus after all must have seen a lot of moats and prepared quite a few beams so his point in this morning's story is pretty direct if we seek to lead each other in the way we have to be clear-sighted we need to have no impediments to our vision if we do have impediments to our vision then we are simply the blind leading the blind the destination is the ditch of course we all know what is wrong with other people their stupidities their short-sightedness their follies their sins if anyone says i don't know what's wrong with me i can say smartly would you like a list but jesus reminds us that we have to deal first of all with the plank in our own eye this is surely a piece of glorious hyperbole we can all resonate to the dust mote that closes our eyes but the plank this is ridiculous except of course that it isn't the plank is the situation where people perhaps even me have developed a way of life which is so conformed to tolerating our peculiar blindnesses that we have transformed a ridiculous plank into a highly polished and deeply revered piece of personal furniture everything then is constructed around accommodating that absurdity it becomes part of who we are it blinds us to reality but we're not going to let go of it in a hurry we are in fact secretly very proud of it there goes old rob people say with his beautiful plank apart from the absurdity of our personal situation vis-a-vis optical impediments we then have the temerity to offer to perform the delicate task of removing a moat from our brother's eye as if the plank were a veritable qualification the simple fact is that we can't be of use to our fellow blind if we have not had the operation to restore our own vision an impenitent soul cannot guide a fellow sinner and more alarmingly an impenitent church cannot plausibly call the world to repentance which is after all the primary pre-evangelism task of the gospel mission of the church a little rider to my opening story malcolm and his sawdust shed when we went back to him did not make the same gothic arch-style cupboards that we'd had they didn't make them anymore but they did make a style called old farmhouse well we didn't need to go there we knew the quality and it looked fine in the brochure and we duly ordered old farmhouse for foy retreat kitchen to our horror when the cupboards arrived they were riddled with woodworm all but one of the central panels had been a victim of an infestation i phoned malcolm demanding that he take them back he would not outrageous when i had finally climbed down off the ceiling malcolm explained to me that the woodworm holes were not woodworm at all they were painstakingly tapped into the panels by his craftsmen to look like woodworm which you might expect in an old farmhouse kitchen what looked to me like a faulty product was in fact the very hallmark of authenticity these designer show homes for boring beetles which were never occupied appealed to my sense of humor we kept the cupboards it seemed to me that there was a sermon in there somewhere and that as a metaphor for the human condition faultiness is truly a hallmark of authenticity and that given time malcolm's mythical woodworm might just be the remedy for my plank amen we stand to affirm our faith i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth i believe in one lord christ son of god the jesus born of the father before all ages god from god light from light through god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us man and for our salvation he came down from heaven to the virgin mary for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the who lord from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world through christ who has defeated death we bring our intentions to the father for our holy father pope francis and our bishop mark that their faithfulness to christ may be an example to us lord in your mercy we remember the people of ukraine in these dark days for their country we pray for a restoration of peace and conversion of hearts of those focused on war so that democracy and peaceful coexistence are fully established soon lord in your mercy for all those seeking work or unable to work through disability and illness may they place their trust in the god of hope and new beginnings lord in your mercy our prayer we pray that the lord may give us the courage to act with integrity in all aspects of our daily lives lord in your mercy hear for those who have died especially that they may receive the reward of their labors in the kingdom of heaven lord in your mercy hear our prayer we call on the prayers of our blessed mother as we pray hail mary full of grace the lord is the fruit of thy womb jesus we offer our sacrifice of prayer to the father in a moment of silence god our loving father in your mercy grant us the grace and courage to do your will we ask this in the name of jesus the lord blessed are you lord god of all creation through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you through to the earth and work of human hands it will become for us the bread of life energy blessed are you lord god of all creation through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you through to the vine and work of human hands it will become our spiritual drink forever pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our religion of all the entire church oh god who provide gifts to be offered to your name and count our oblations as signs of our desire to serve you with devotion we ask of your mercy that what you grant as the source of merit may also help us to attain merit's reward through christ our lord amen the lord it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord for art of compassion for the waywardness that is ours he humbled himself and was born of the virgin by the passion of the cross he freed us from unending death and by rising from the dead he gave us life eternal and so with angels and archangels with thrones and dominions and with all the hosts and powers of heaven we sing the hymn of your glory as without and we acclaim sun tools sun tools sun to stop in [Music] [Music] the day before he was to suffer he took bread in his holy and venerable hands and with eyes raised to heaven to your god his almighty father giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took this precious chalice in his holy and venerable hands and once more giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith save us savior of the world for by your draws your attention to the ash wednesday service which the bishop will be speaking about in the letter in a moment there are two services here at bodmin in the morning the second one is the school and although there will be a bit of room there to be quite packed so if you have a choice of services it would be better to come to the early one on ash wednesday uh other notices you'll see in the bulletin there are lenten meditations available with the daily spiritual exercise on the website some paul repository.com it's all listed there can i also draw your attention to the healing ministry course which will start next saturday here 10 o'clock with a mass and then a teaching session on the gospel miracles of jesus and their implication for our ministry and healing today and then some practical prayer time that's at 10 o'clock and also just to tell if you've got polish friends whose english isn't very good there are translations uh prepared by father yatzek of the talks and they will be available in polish finally i did the first of the rosary walks last tuesday i propose to do the second this tuesday if you have any prayers or intentions you would like me to take with you please either see me after math or drop me a note on the email or phone i think that's all the notices i need to give i will now read the bishops letter my dear brothers and sisters war has come again to europe it is almost unimaginable for us to have lived in peace for so long and our hearts and prayers go out to the ukrainian people and to all peace-loving russians we also pray and hope for the conversion of hearts and minds of those bent on war and aggression given the reality of this war pope francis has asked us all to observe ash wednesday as a day of prayer and fasting for peace we all feel somewhat impotent what can we do ash wednesday marks the beginning of lent a season shaped by the disciplines of prayer fasting and arms giving this year they have a particular focus for us as we link these spiritual weapons to the reality of what we are living through in europe at this time we want to make real what saint paul teaches to the church at corinth death is swallowed up in victory death where is your victory where is your sting let us thank god for giving us the victory through our lord jesus christ so firstly is the weapon of prayer the mass is the most fruitful prayer in which we participate i strongly urge all catholics to go to mass this ash wednesday to pray for peace receiving ashes will have a particular poignancy as we recall the fragility of human life we pray that all may turn from the road of hatred and of violence repent and believe the gospel i urge all catholics too to take up again their regular attendance at sunday mass lent can be a time to renew this physical attendance at mass for those who are able can be a practice that is lived in these days as an act of solidarity with our brothers and sisters who are suffering we believe in the economy of grace where we do not find love we pour love in in the hope that eventually we can draw love out and as members of christ's one body we know that when one part of the body suffers we all suffer as we worship and adore god at mass we unite ourselves with jesus offering to the father on the cross we pray that the fruits of the lord's sacrifice may be bestowed on our brothers and sisters who are enduring the pain of war so please i urge you return to being physically present at mass if you are able the second weapon is fasting fasting entails denying ourselves some good usually food but it can also be a particular enjoyment as watching the television or the internet or social media it is a personal sacrifice but it is also an act of solidarity with those who are poor those who denied these things in daily life how shocking it has been for us to see the scenes of panic food and fuel buying in ukraine are the very real sacrifices forced on people as a result of war fasting brings us closer to them and it also puts us in touch with our own vulnerability and even make us feel a little weak but we do so to remember our dependence on god creator of all that is good and in order that the fruits of jesus passion may be bestowed on those who are truly hungry who really have to go without and then there is the weapon of arms giving of charitable giving we know that this war means steeper energy and food prices and this will be felt most deeply by the poorest in our communities it requires greater generosity from those of us who have more the war will also lead to many refugees and i hope our countries will be generous in receiving these desperate brothers and sisters fleeing for safety from war in their homeland may this lent indeed help us to be more sensitive to the needs of our neighbors both at home and in the ukraine it has been made clear by our political leaders that we will not be taking a physical part in this war in ukraine we can be grateful for this that we will not have to participate in the terrible bloodshed yet we all want to do something to bring an end to this terrible war so we undertake the sacrifices of love during lent fasting and arms giving as spiritual weapons to bring god's grace into a situation which is desperate and where it sometimes seems as though god is absent through his power and action god can bring his redemptive love to bear on this and all dire situations in ways unseen or unknown to us our acts of prayer of fasting of arms giving aid us in participating in god's redemptive action united with all those who believe united with all those who suffer united with all those who long for an end to war united too with mary the first of the disciples who is queen of peace we continuously intercede stop the war i also ask for your prayers for me yours devotedly mark bishop of plymouth the lord be with you may almighty god bless you the father the son and the holy spirit go in peace glorifying the lord by your life thanks be to god fathers leaving still in spite of dungeon fire and sword oh how our hearts beat high with joy whenever we hear that glorious word faith or the father's holy faith we will be true to thee till death we will be true to thee till death
