This is part three of my "How to Film by  Yourself at Home" series. In the first   part I showed you how I come up with ideas  and how I plan the shoot. Part two was a   behind-the-scenes of the shoot here on my  desk all the links are in the description   by the way and today's video is all about  editing your footage in ADV resolve now I'm   not going to do a step-by-step "holding your  hand" editing tutorial here, no. I mean, look,   if you really want me to hold your hand I'll  hold your hand you all know that right but   not in this video no in this video I'm just  going to show you the most important steps   and editing techniques and then also the effects  and transitions that I used to get this result and just so you know, I've already upgraded to  DaVinci Resolve 19 but I think that everything   still looks more or less exactly the same so if  you haven't upgraded yet no problem you can do   everything in DaVinci Resolve 18 okay so this is  my timeline right and it looks kind of crazy but   it's not it's really not it's just a lot of  details and small adjustments but if we break   it down you'll see that it's all pretty simple  and the first important technique that I used   and you've probably noticed it right I mixed in  some stock footage because I wanted to get that   futuristic gritty Vibe and obviously I don't have  the means to shoot or create footage like that   so that's why I used stock footage and also I do  these projects to learn from you know so there's   nothing wrong with using some stock footage so I  just went to different stock footage websites and   did a search for futuristic clips that all had the  color red in them and then all I needed to do was   match the colors of the different clips that's it  and I think the result looks great it's exactly   the mood and atmosphere that I want it especially  combined with the music and then another editing   technique that I used is well I combined different  clips different takes of the same shot I made   Composites because well you all saw in the behind  the scenes that sometimes it was super difficult   to get the perfect smoke and so yeah sometimes I  would do a shot and then the top of the frame the   smoke SM there would be perfect but the bottom  was not perfect and then I tried again and then   the bottom looked perfect but not the top and so  that's when I combine those shots I use the top   of the frame of One Clip and the bottom of the  frame of another clip and it's super easy just   put both Clips on top of each other then go to  the color page and add a window whatever shape   you want all depends on what kind of composite you  want to make and then all you need to do is here   right click and add an alpha output connected and  now it will only show what's in the window of the   top clip so in this case the bottom section of the  top clip you know what I mean and so you have the   top part of the bottom clip and then the bottom  part of the top clip now obviously you can only do   this when both shots are exactly the same right  so if you're using handheld shots it's pretty   much impossible but yeah so that's how I got the  smoke perfect for every shot I just made composite   of different takes different shots well no same  shot different takes that's how I should say   it then another simple technique that I used is  digital zooms because some shots are just static   shots because it just wasn't possible to and move  the camera and pull focus and blow smoke all by   myself you know so I just added a digital Zoom  to the shots super simple key frame here where   you want to zoom to start key frame where you want  it to end and just zoom in there and that's it and   then of course also music and sound effects always  super important but in this case also super simple   because I just edited the music or the footage to  the music and I added sound effects to or under   the Transitions and the text effects and you  know talking about those text effects they look   super cool right well I didn't create them myself  because I'm no digital animation expert so I got   them from motion VFX the sponsor of this video and  you know what I actually only use Motion Graphics   text effects and plugins from motion VFX for all  my videos because they're just that good the one I   used for this spec commercial is included in the  mtitle film title pack but they also offer Lots   transitions Creator toolkits and so much more  if you're looking for some cool plugins you're   definitely going to find it here I know I always  do everything's easy to use drag and drop and you   can even customize everything in the inspector  window colors effects sizes whatever you want and   right now they're also running an awesome creative  editing challenge Showtime just download a free   plug-in from their website and create a 60-second  show re for a chance to win some pretty cool   prizes guys this is one of those opportunities  where you get a chance to learn something and   win something right as always all the links and  information is in the description of this video   and of course thank you so much motion VFX for  supporting my channel okay and now let me show   you what other effects and transitions I used in  the resolve for my spec commercial smoke overlays   not really a d resolve effect of course but in  addition to the real smoke that I used I also   used some video overlays basically video clips  of smoke and when you set the composite mode of   these clips to screen it looks like real smoke  and I just added a few of those video overlays   of smoke in those cases where after compositing  different takes of the different shots different   takes of the same shot that's how I should say it  um When the Smoke was still not perfect now I saw   in the comments some people say why didn't you use  that that those video overlays for all the shots   because it's a lot easier well the thing is with  those overlays you don't get like the interaction   between the smoke and the object you know when the  smoke touches the object and it flows over it you   can get that with those video overlays so I mean  yeah video overlays are super cool and you can do   a lot of creative stuff with them but it's missing  that that real reality thing it doesn't look real   I mean it just depends on what you want the result  to look like of course but here I wanted to have   that interaction between the smoke and the shoe  that the smoke flows over the shoe okay you know   what I mean right what else did I use well one of  my favorite transitions the glitch transition of   course now there are a few different ways  to do a glitch transition I'll link the   the tutorial in the description but for this  commercial I kept it really simple as always   I always say that keep it simple but it's true I  just added an adjustment clip whenever I wanted   a glitch or a glitch transition I applied the  glitch effect the built-in Dent resolve glitch   effect I applied it to the adjustment clip and  I cut out some parts of the clip to create that   flickering and that's basically it okay and  then the next effect in my opinion the most   important effect of the whole video but it's also  the most subtle and it's the prism effect because   I wanted to create that gritty old school sci-fi  look you know not a modern look but a more retro   sci-fi look I guess if that makes sense I think it  does so I used a super simple prism effect where   you get these cyan or red edges see here at the  edge of the shoe and then also in the smoke you   can see it here it's very subtle but it really  does make a difference and to create it just go   to the color Page hit option or alt+ Y and  see then resolve creates this node structure   automatically where it separates the different  color channels of your image red green and blue   and so now you can make adjustments to each color  Channel separately let me show you it'll make   everything crystal clear so I only use the red  channel here because that's when you get cyan   and red because Canan is the opposite color of red  and the red channel is the top node here this is   green and this is blue and then with the node  selected the red Channel go to sizing and make   sure to select note sizing here and then just zoom  the image and see now it only adjusts the image   of the red Channel and you get this really cool  effect and that's it that's all I did but again I   think it looks super cool here and what I also did  for the stock footage to create a bit of a visual   difference between stock footage and then the  footage of the shoe I added a frame to the stock   footage I used the frame from a motion VFX plugin  here but I could have just as well created my own   frame you know simple crop the image but yeah this  one looks a bit more special and then finally to   tie everything together I applied two more effects  to the entire video to everything so that was like   the last layer on top of everything the first one  is halation you can find it here in the color page   under effects and it's all also really subtle I've  already showed you this effect a few times when I   used it for other videos but here I kept it super  subtle a tiny bit of halation that's it and then   also film grain just to emphasize that gritty old  sci-fi look and by adding these two effects all   the way at the end on top of everything you can  like you know make the the differences between   the stock footage and the footage of the shoe  less noticeable it makes everything look look the   same you know what I mean so if the stock footage  would look super clean and the footage of the shoe   doesn't look super clean by adding that halation  and Grain on top of everything you know it makes   everything look the same I don't know how else  to explain it sometimes my English is like it's   not sufficient when I'm like have to explain  these technical uh things and then my brain   starts overheating I don't know if you can see it  I think my ears are turning red already anyway I'm   actually realizing Now by talking about like you  know the top layer that I didn't mention anything   about color grading this footage um I also haven't  planned a video about the color grading of this   spec commercial so if that's something you want  to see let me know in the comments it's actually   super simple again I just used one of my uh Lots  I think it was film look and then I tweaked it   a little bit that's it but if you really want a  dedicated tutorial on that just let me know and   I'll make a short one okay guess that's it thank  you so much for watching I see you in the next one Sal I have to breathe more when I record videos  I always like I don't know whatever salute
