Eating JACKFRUIT SEED Curry!! Serve Yourself Vegetarian Thai Food! | Phatthalung, Thailand

hey everyone hope you're having an amazing day it's mark wiens i'm in the southern thailand province of patalong and we just arrived and we're gonna go to what is one of the main vegetarian restaurants in patalon it's right across the street there with the yellow sign j restaurant i'm not totally sure what they have but i they definitely have all the different dishes prepared and then you choose what you want to eat so let's go have lunch restaurant is called tonchat and it's right in the center of patalong town and again it's a j restaurant thai vegan restaurant oh self-service nice any kind of like huh ah okay so at the front here you just grab a plate rice is ready it's not really fully brown rice but there is some brown rice kernels bit of rice and then they have the silverware here which is sanitized in hot water grab a spoon and fork a quick overview of the curry selection these are southern thai curry dishes uh there's some fried vegetables there's some bitter melon there's some it's like some pumpkin but this is what i really want to eat right here this is a southern thai yellow sour curry called um uh called gangstom but i think there's a papaya in here there's also hummingbird flowers but the main thing that you see are our jackfruit seeds and a little bit more of that turmeric and you can see the chilies in there too okay i'm also gonna get some of this one this curry you can see uh there's eggplant and pumpkin in here a bit more gravy and then finally i think i'll get some bitter melon which looks like it's stir fried up with some tofu all right there we go okay i think that's good for my plate my plate is full they also over on this side they have a variety of imitation meats they have some fried tofu they have all kind of gin which is curry with noodles and then also it comes on your table like in southern thailand you always get a plate of vegetables well this food looks amazing i can't wait to try the gaeng song with the the met kanun which are jackfruit seeds [Music] immediately you can your tongue feels the spice the chili's in there and then it's sour i believe from lime juice this time oh man and the jackfruit seed is amazing almost like potatoey when it's cooked like that really soft crumbly and starchy and then revolving the plate this is a curry i think mostly pumpkin in here i think it is coconut milk based with pumpkin and some other vegetables well that's good too you taste the pepper in there and the sweetness of that pumpkin okay oh okay in the back [Music] okay you come to the back here and it's self-service water come on oh man she's so nice deliver it to our table uh but it's self-service water it's like a community here that water which is fragranced with uh or maybe boiled with pandan or pandanus and lemongrass very aromatic immediately that's great it's not sweet i mean it's just it's it's not really like a juice but it's just an aromatic water kind of like you know when you marinate cucumbers or something in water where it kind of just takes on that fragrance a little bit or put mint in water or it's just an essence in the water but not really a just flavored water is what it is you might explore the chilies and soy sauce though for my next few bites a few chilies in here but to be honest that curry is really nicely spiced both of the curries actually are really nicely spiced okay and now moving over to the bitter melon with tofu i think especially here in the south people are very kind and they're so friendly here not only the owner and the chefs but everyone eating here too it's like a community i always love bitter melon that bitter it almost feels like a cucumber or zucchini in your mouth but with a bitter taste to it [Music] i love that gangster [Music] what that pumpkin curry is amazing you taste the pepper and the like yeah it has a spice to it for sure and then you can reach over to explore the the raw vegetables i'll get some of this pea eggplant something i always love and you kind of twist it to get it off the stem they're like marbles i love the bitter taste of them and then just how they pop just unleashing that just like a sea of seeds in your mouth but that pop is the best and then this one is the kanam jean the rice noodles with a coconut milk based curry kind of mild in flavor you can really taste the coconut cream and it just kind of absorbs into those really soft rice noodles [Music] i think my favorite thing is definitely the the gang zone with the jackfruit [Music] seats yard long bean always good always refreshing i love that crispness of it are pretty decently spicy [Music] [Music] i just had to try in southern thailand it's called which is grill usually grilled chicken with a coconut milk barbecue sauce but this one is soy protein so i just had to try it to finish off the meal oh that's pretty pretty tasty but you taste the red chilies the dried chilies and then all that texture is perfect the soy protein is like kind of spongy in fact like that just absorbs the flavor that soy protein because it's so spongy in texture [Music] and then it's also a self cleaning up your dishes you bring to the back there to the sink in addition to the food uh this is also a just a small little market uh they have some cooking supplies some coconut oil some different types of soy sauce and then if you keep walking down down the lane there's some different like herbal kind of supplements there's some oh bale fruit there's some uh jujube i believe and then down below here there's a bunch of selection of different soy proteins that you can buy that you can cook and different extracts [Music] [Applause] this is a really friendly local kind of community oh and by the way they also have dessert up here which the other lady who was eating here before she told us we should really try which is the black sticky rice and durian but we just ate some durian earlier today for the self-service plate of rice and i guess you can dig as much dishes or the dishes on top of your rice as you want for one plate it costs 30 baht so about a dollar per plate which is a great deal great food yeah that that those curries had some nice spice to them man they were flavored well i really like the jackfruit i think that was the highlight of my meal there is the jackfruit southern thai sour curry gengsun that was fantastic that is aromatic to say the least but this is the reason i didn't have dessert the sticky rice and durian because we have some durian in the car you should smell the aroma coming from our car before when we're on our driving on the way here uh we stopped at a durian stall to get some durian on the side of the road and this is called dulian ban which is just like why i mean it's just like local durian that falls off the tree um usually from somebody's home and this is just wow oh wow oh yeah this one is amazing oh that's so good it is bitter and creamy and sweet unbelievably fragrant and aromatic and strong this is the type of durian that you can smell all the way down the road oh no oh [Music] you don't actually need teeth to eat this you can chew it with your lips so that's going to be it
