oh that was horrible god the synology oh i can't believe i just did that the synology ds1618 plus i did a video on this wow this is really dusty okay good thing i have a craft computing dust rag readily available on my floor where it deserves to be to serve as my dusting services the ds 16 18 plus from synology a four core 2.1 gigahertz atom processor built in this one i think has four gigs ram it might have eight but i'm pretty sure it only has four this i did a video on showcasing me backing up my entire household including my server my main computer my laptop everything i have connected which was awesome synology sent it over western digital supplied the hard drives it has been an amazing device super reliable awesome in every way but four cores and an atom processor pretty much i looked at this device as just a backup device only yes you can run plex on it yes you can utilize it for other things but you know me i like power i like more and i this serves the purpose that it's supposed to do but in today's video thank you synology by the way for sending this over in today's video i am checking out the synology ds 1621 xs plus this thing has a zeon processor in it [Music] what's up youtube jason here with bite my bits the goal of today's video primarily is one single thing and that is upgrading from one synology device to another synology device like seamlessly this was a hesitation i had when i was contacted by synology about this new upgraded device that they had an option for i was like well i got everything set up and and my experience with unraid is that as long as you just put the same hard drives into your new on-rate system unraid kind of picks everything up exactly where it left off it doesn't actually matter what hardware you have as long as all the same hardware is there like like hard drives ssds etc so that made upgrading my main server zeus over to loki extremely easy and that's something that i was looking forward to in this yes i use this to like back up everything on my network but this thing has more power plus i have a couple surprises today so i'm actually going to be using this for more than just backups you'll see that here in a second but before i try to seamlessly migrate everything over i do want to give a quick little unboxing and kind of overview of everything they sent to me today so this is not the primary video on this device in fact i will be doing some testing further on down the line expect a video from that i haven't even shot b-roll or open this up or anything this is literally just a first look and a migration over so use the shortcuts down below if you would like to fast forward to the part of this video where i migrate the drives from this older device to the newer device seamlessly hopefully that's what they said in email i haven't done this before but i hope it works let's put this over to the side right yeah now the ds 1621 s x plus has a four core xeon processor in it that has four additional threads that gives it a total of eight cores threads of performance 2.2 gigahertz 2.1 gigahertz xeon atom this thing could be a powerhouse i'm just saying i am actually really excited to see how this thing performs with plex i feel like with this device i am inching closer and closer to having a potential you know main server replacement not that i would ever use it but for other people out there who just want like a small box that has all the power they need to run plex and run plex efficiently and quickly enough to replace their main server i feel like i'm getting closer to that now now this is the primary box that comes with it full of all the goodies including the power cables and [Applause] yeah power cables two ethernet cables some screws for the drives and stuff to lock your drives i mean are all these the same they probably are yeah they're all the same little dusty a little dusty speaking of shirts synology seriously i've been doing enough videos for you where is my synology shirt i try to wear a synology shirt i got a free nas i got well true nas i got a free ass and a true nas and an unrate shirt but i don't have a synology shirt what's up with that okay so right away you can obviously tell there are some similarities between these models they look i mean this one says ds1618 plus this one says ds1621xs plus that yeah also on the sides they both say synology now it's the back where things get a little bit different and that is because with this device it comes with a few upgrades that i really like a few upgrades that are important here so this one on the right this is the old one you'll notice that this one has four one gigabit nicks plus i added a 10 gigabit nick i think is on this side yes a dual 10 gigabit nick on the side now this was using a pci express expansion slot to get the 10 gig connectivity which i really insisted on when i was implementing this into my workflow because i have a 10 gig network switch and everything that's important runs off 10 gig off my network so that was a necessity however on this device you can see that it has two standard one gig nics those are just lan 2 and lan 3 but the primary nic is a 10 gig connected lamp built right in it's only one but hey one is better than zero one built right in i still have the expansion slot so if i wanted to expand on this i definitely could but i don't have to because i only used one 10 gig nick connected port that's more than enough for my needs this thing can be expanded use it this one also has two e sata ports but they're just they're kind of laid out differently as you can see but it can be expanded i did not have any kind of an expansion thing for this however it is an option synology sent over some extra hardware that they wanted me to talk about yes i meant taco about because i'm hungry for tacos they now have ssds m.2 2.5 inch and i think they even sent me ram too yes so they sent me 16 gigabytes of ram that's to upgrade this unit 16 gigabytes oh they sent me 32 gigabytes of ram holy bananas i didn't even realize that and they sent me a 400 gig ssd that is an m.2 nvme and holy bananas they sent me two enterprise grade 2.5 inch ssds 2 terabytes each oh man just i'm really excited for these right now so i can upgrade the ram and i can put in ssds i know what you're thinking right now upgraded ram that's cool m.2 ssds that's interesting but jason what are you gonna do with these 2.5s like i mean you're you're moving your hard drives over right like what do you do well synology and all their glory thought about that too and that is where i'm going to throw a slight wrench into my migration today and i am going to be using an expansion device the dx517 which adds six additional hard drive slots i think six one two three no which add five additional hard drive slots for some reason i was thinking six but it this handles five additional hard drive slots connected through e sata which means that i can add this ssd storage directly on utilizing these slots and totally glad that didn't fall out there we go at least i dropped the box and not the good stuff okay it is a little bit smaller obviously because it does not have six bays it only has five this is the e sata connection looks like has some screws in there too to make sure it's nice and sturdy connection i wonder if there's a speed difference between using the ssds in the main and then spreading the rest of the hard drives throughout this yeah it should be six gigabits per second i mean just standard sata except it's e sata so i have a device connected with 10 gigabit per second nix an expansion device connected with an e sata port that only handles six gigabits per second if you haven't figured it out yet this is my first time having an e-sited esata expanded nas this is also dusty not a lot dusty just a little bit so with that said i'm going to throw this wrench in here and i'm going to say that my best course of action would probably hmm putting these two in the main drive slots filling up the rest with four of the hard drives and then having two of the extra drives stored on the expansion slot and then that gives me three extra drives that i could fill up with some spare eight terabyte drives that i have hmm [Music] decisions decisions decisions you know what that sounds like an interesting video for me to try out different configurations and connectivity for now i'm going to keep it simple move the drives over and then put the ssds in my expansion slot along with probably three hard drives i do kind of wonder are these redesigned or can i just move them over how seamless can this be i would imagine part of me thinks that these would just be the same let's look at them they have the same mounting hardware they're the same size are they yeah they're the same size would that be easy or would that be easy wow that's that's a lot easier than i thought it was going to be seamlessly just moving them over just like that i don't even have to take them out of the caddy they just move right over just like that oh that is so so simple now before i did any of this the only preparation i did on this old device is i logged into the web interface and i went to the settings and i backed up the configurations on this device that hopefully should keep most of my you know settings intact including my array setup so the first step is going to be moving everything over and seeing if this kind of picks up where it left off after i you know just import those settings and just like that the old device old and outdated basically gonna throw it away i'm just kidding i'm not gonna throw it away i'm gonna find something to use that for but i still have to add some things to this where is my okay okay so straight from the factory they give me a built-in eight gigabytes of ram but as you saw previously they sent me 32 gigs of ram 32 gigabytes of ram on an ass wow like vms oh yeah [Music] ah that's simple i'll remove this old memory put that right there and just like the last one stick it in the hole and push it down just like that it's kind of interesting seeing synology moving into like the ssd game you know like i don't know how long that's been out but you know they want to get into like this enterprise you know type gear enterprise solid state drives it's kind of interesting okay okay okay i may or may not have jumped the gun just a little bit when it came to moving over my hard drives because the m.2 ssds looks like they mount on the inside i was thinking that they may be mounted underneath or underneath the hood specifically but looks like i was wrong instead they mount right there and there it is 400 gigabytes worth of storage and they even made this easier look at this look at this you see that let me see if i can line it up just right with the light you don't even have to use screws they just plop right in there looks like that plastic thing secures it so let's see if i can angle this just right to install this on camera just like that trying to get my hand out of the way here wow that is that is way too easy okay and let's just cross my fingers and hope that my little fumbling that i did earlier did not ruin drives because what i did was an embarrassingly bad thing to do and that's it i don't have to do anything else besides plug it in log in and restore my settings so that's it if all goes well that's easy next on the line is going to be this expansion slot drive thingy that has room to add two of these in here that will need to be screwed in i actually have never seen a synology ssd i mean the m.2 just looks like an m.2 with a different sticker but the ssd i mean that's got to be different right here we go the moment of truth simple gold ish brownish pewter-ish i'm gonna say that's like a pewter-ish brown you know not really going for gold there it's like a pewter-ish brown but uh yeah it's a normal ssd it actually took longer to install these than it did both the m.2s that is the creepiest look i've ever done maybe i don't know i did like lick hard drives before now what to do about these hmm some spare ate and that is where some spare 8 terabyte hard drives are going to come in to save the day basically these are old 8 terabyte western digital white label drives these drives came out of usb enclosures drives that are probably a couple few years old i had them in loki my main unraid server just doing some testing on the whole additional array thing that they could do i didn't really like the way that video went or at least that testing went so i never touched base on that but uh god i did it again either way for right now they're going to serve a purpose for filling up the rest of this expansion unit with a a side array that won't really be heavily reliant on massive speeds i don't know what i'll use for it yet but or use it for yet but either way it's got to be full and that brings us to hooking everything up powering it up plugging it in all should be the exact same thing with the exception of the additional e-static connection that i'm going to do on the back so from here on out it's really just a matter of booting it up going and logging into the dsm software uh utilizing the backup or restore screen on the settings in within the software at this point i haven't actually done it yet i'm just kind of recording the video voice overlay for something i haven't done okay so previous json did not comprehend just how easy it was to migrate your data from one synology to another that includes not needing to save your backup file but only moving your hard drives over and it automatically detects hey you're migrating would you like to do this you click through the things and it's like done it's so simple wow and if all goes well your system will return back to normal and if you check your storage configuration center you should be able to see your existing array that you had on your old device now up and running on the new device again i haven't done this yet i'm just assuming it will work so if it doesn't work then i'll have to be back in the studio saying i messed something up but if it does work then that's all you have to do look for some more follow-up videos on these devices including probably switching some hard drives around doing some speed tests specifically on this new one with plex to see if this thing can be a powerhouse usable for anybody out there i mean m.2 caches we got ssds in this one this thing could probably do some damage when it comes to transcoding with plex especially if it has hardware accelerated transcoding which i'm sure it does but either way that will be a future video if you have any questions comments or recommendations for next video leave them in the comments down below as always if you want to find out more information about this device or this device check the description in this video i will have some of his amazon affiliate links in the description down below so thank you for watching like and subscribe and to have yourself a great day also again thank you synology for sending these over seriously thank you so much oh i can't wait to test this send me a shirt please
