so when most di wires went to do some drywall or plaster touch-ups they usually rush out and buy one of these pre-mixed buckets of drywall mud they're convenient and the all-purpose joint compound is good for most phases of drywall and plaster repair but the problem is the moment you pop the top on that container the whole bucket starts to expire these pre-mixed batches harden by an evaporated process so as soon as the top seal is broken your bucket starts to dry up right away this is a problem because these pre-mixed compounds are also slow to set and slow to dry you can only throw on one coat at a time then you have to wait a while before you go for a second coat and a third topping coat meanwhile the entire bucket is drying up on you if you get delayed too long between coats you might need to go out and get another bucket and if you can somehow keep it damp enough to prevent this mold can actually grow in the container ruining the compound there's a better alternative out there for small drywall and class repair it's called quick setting mud or in the construction industry hot mud these are essentially bags of unmixed compound you can mix them yourself in small quantities and they're perfect for patch repairs that's what we're talking about next on the honest carpenter show unlike bucket mud quick-setting mud hardens by a chemical reaction the amount of hardening agent in the compound determines the time it takes for it to set up so the numbers on the bag indicate your working time for the mud mixture my friend Phillip LaMacchia was a plaster repair expert in Greensboro North Carolina and he does all of his repairs with various grades of quick-setting mind here he shows us how easy it is to mix a quick batch for small repairs the great thing is there's no need to mix in a bucket you can just start with your average drywall mud pan fill up dip some water in the bottom of the pan very little to start out maybe just a quarter inch then he sprinkled some compound onto the water this is way easier than starting with powder and pouring water onto it because the two will resist mixing that way and powder will just get everywhere still Phillip always wears a mask when mixing mud because the fine talked and the powder can pose a very he left his off here so we could talk to me while working but if you're mixing quick-setting mud be sure to wear one so with some of the power on the water in the pan Phillip uses a three inch knife to work the two together if it seems too soupy and what's a little more powder so he drops in a tiny amount and continues mixing in this back and forth motion for base totes he's looking for a consistency similar to peanut butter thick enough to grip the knife but still pliable for later topping coats he uses a mixture that's more like a younger texture so if the mutt seems too sick he can dribble in a tiny amount of water with the wet sponge Phillip actually cautions against over mixing which can waste time and cause the mud to begin setting up in the pan really just getting the two compounds stirred together is all that it takes after that he's free to use the compound for filling gaps dips and craters on plaster walls when he has his coats on he just cleaned out his pan with water and a sponge Annie might scrape the corners with his knife he just left the compound out of the pan before it has time to harden the great thing about quick setting mud is that it will last almost indefinitely you just need to store leftovers in a thick plastic bag so it doesn't soak up humidity over time I carried one of my work man for almost three years at one point and it was still functional just remember that the number on the bag indicates working time which essentially means hardening time but it'll take longer for the compound to actually dry out completely so it won't yet you ready to sand and there are methods that you can use to reduce final sanding drastically in a few weeks Phillip and I will post a video about how to do the quickest plaster and drywall repairs imaginable using quick set mud Phillip has techniques that will bring your working time down to mere hours so keep your eyes peeled for that video you don't want to miss it I'll also mention that Phillip is now developing an online class repair school where he's teaching people the ins and outs of the trained work and the business side of plaster repair I'll link everything down below if you want to know more about that so be sure to check it out as always thanks for watching if you have questions put them down below and comments as well and stay tuned for more videos coming soon I'm Ethan James with Yanis carpenter comm I'll see you next time [Music]
