[Music] torn brown drywall paper it's it's something that plagues a lot of us if you're doing drywall repairs you're gonna come across this fairly often and you really have to treat it you have to if you don't i'm going to show you what can go wrong and i'm going to show you how to fix it right right after this hey everybody welcome back to my channel here at that celtic guy videos my name is guy purcell and i welcome you guys and i'm a 35-year drywall professional who first walked down a pair still spotting nails for my dad 50 years ago and i've been in the military a few times and gotten out of it a bit but i've got over 35 years experience and for the past 15 years i've had my own business of mr patch drywall so now it's my goal to pass on my years of experience to you guys and teach you guys how you can do a lot of this stuff yourself you can do it and you can save some money take pride in your workmanship and i'm going to teach you how to do it right in my videos i try and teach you how to do this stuff and i try and teach you the right way and not the handyman quick and down and dirty way so when it comes to this issue of torn drywall paper it happens a lot i have fixed thousands of these it just happens like you might be cutting out some sheetrock and you go to pull the rock off and it just tears down to the brown paper well it's really common and if you don't approach this right and treat it correctly you're gonna have problems and i'm gonna show you what that is here in a minute and yes it's nothing major it's not gonna cause your house to fall apart but your house might pack up and leave and you'll be homeless now i'm kidding about that but there are issues and i can demonstrate to you why you don't want to do that now there's a lot of different ways of treating this and some of these ways are definitely going to work better than others over the years like i say i've probably fixed thousands of these torn spots and i have tried a lot of different ways some of the ways you'll see out there on the internet and i can tell you that some of them definitely work better than others i have settled on this product sitting over here which i'll show you in a second because it's the most reliable if you do the prep work and use the product right you'll get good results pretty much every time if you try and take shortcuts well it can bite even me i'll tell you a little quick story in this picture right here i'm going to show you what happened to me the other day i went to a job you see all those bubbles right there now i'm going to show you why that happens and i'm also going to show you how to fix it if you just go over it without treating it right you'll have to go back and fight it and you can end up fighting this stuff over and over be and i'll show you why that is here in just a second all right the reason why this will just keep bubbling you'll scrape it off it'll bubble again you'll scrape it off it'll bubble again sometime it'll just keep fighting into you maybe maybe you get all the way down to the raw drywall then it won't but you don't really want to do that the reason is because the way sheetrock is constructed i'm gonna show you an illustration here in this illustration you can see that there's an outer layer of white paper and then underneath that is the brown paper and that brown paper as you see here when i expand the view it's multiple layers of brown paper so the problem is each time it bubbles it just bubbles that outer layer of brown paper so you peel that brown paper off and you go to do it again well there's just layer after layer if you see in this close-up here maybe i can show you this if a lot of times when i rub i can roll off a layer of paper but see there's still another one under it and i might roll that one and you just keep getting layer after layer so that's why you've got to treat it if you don't you'll get these bubbles but there's there's several parts to treating it this product alone won't treat it all by itself you have to do a little bit of prep work okay so let's say you were fixing this one right here now you'll see around the edges there's some loose pieces of paper okay since i just made that one up on the spot here's two real examples that show how bad it can look much better so now back to the video sometime in the middle there will be some loose pieces of paper so first thing you want to do is get rid of all those loose pieces you can scrape it a little bit if you find that you're scraping it and it just wants to keep going and going and getting bigger and bigger that's sometime that's because this edge will just keep lifting on you so a lot of times what i like to do to avoid that is you just cut around it and then what happens is it won't go past that mark so if you peel this it'll stop right there and let's say you got to peel that one it stops at your cut line so that that'll stop that chasing thing next thing you want to do is check all this paper and see if any of these layers feel loose if they do you'll see that paper the brown paper will move a little bit it's kind of like a little bubble if that happens you got to get that loose off too so everything that's loose has to come off of here once you've got it all cleaned up and all the loose stuff is off then the next step is to treat it with this product and that product i use is called pro999rx35 it's made by the roman company i'll put a picture of that up on the screen here but you'll see that it says it's for sealing and priming but it's also for problem solving it's also good to go over a little bit of drywall or wallpaper paste if you've removed the wallpaper you go over it with this it helps lock everything down now if you can't get this locally i'll put a link to a product in the description called guards you'll see it here and you can get it in quart sizes or gallon sizes through amazon that'll do basically the same thing now this product may make some of you think there's nothing to it because if i put it on here it's it goes on really thin well that's because it's not paint it's a sealer sealer primer primers often don't have a whole lot of tint to them it's also very thin so it's watery but i think that's what helps it penetrate better so all you do is coat the areas put a good solid coat on them make sure you get it around the edges underneath any little potential edges that are still raised up and then just let it dry these have actually been treated all of these except the ones i just did so you can see it goes on thin and it dries clear now if you really want to be certain you don't have problems you can put a second coat on but read the instructions on here each coat is supposed to dry for three hours but online it says three hours is the recommended time i can tell you that if you put a fan on this in an hour it it you can go ahead and coat it i've done that many many many times and it works with a fan it'll dry it quicker but to be really safe put it on and let it dry for three hours there has been a few times it hasn't worked that well but i can tell you that letting it dry the proper amount of time makes a difference i did a job one time where the customer wanted to scrape off their own popcorn i checked it and i said it's probably not going to scrape good at all i would recommend we do something else and they said oh we've got time we're going to go ahead and scrape it so they did well when they called me back to fix it i came in and discovered that they had a little torn spot about the size of this one 50 cent pieces everywhere there was one about every 12 to 18 inches on this whole house so there was probably hundreds of them maybe 500 torn paper spots so i told them what you need to do is put this stuff on it and they rolled it on and they put two coats on let it dry thoroughly i went through and skim coated the whole ceiling smoothed it back out and then applied a texture not one spot bubbled so it really does work well if you use it right hey i briefly want to say thank you to the gary sinise foundation that's what the hat is that i'm wearing and they have helped us out as i mentioned i've had this vertigo problem for 10 months they helped us out and bought us some time got us back on track let me put out some more videos and they do a lot to help out veterans out there so if you'd like to help out veterans they help them get into homes when they're like disabled vets they'll build custom homes for them and they can provide a little bit of financial assistance here and there great organization thank you guys very much for your help to me and if you can help them out go check them out at garrison eastfoundation.com i believe it is i'll put the link on this the screen here okay now is there other ways to treat this there is uh you can use some products like shellac based products the reason i don't like those myself is the odor if you have to do more than a few spots which again sometime i do eight or ten spots it'll run you out of the house and sometimes the fumes are flammable so if you're doing it anywhere near a hot water heater any open source of flame a stove anything don't use those you could get yourself in trouble i have heard of that happening where people have blown up their their house and i talked to somebody once and that was the case i used too much of a flammable product and it got into the the hot water heater area and exploded this is water-based product so that's one reason i really like it okay so here's a few examples of why this can happen let's say you've got something glued to your sheetrock this could be a mirror it could be trim all kinds of things get glued to it sometime by accident well that one did a lot more damage than i planned but with this little bitty piece that tore out bigger chunks that can even be fixed if you do a lot of damage don't panic there's ways to fix it so in this case cut out all this loose stuff here and you see the peeling paper well by cutting it again we go to there now this could be filled in with mud and put some mesh tape over it and it would actually be fine it's not as bad as it seems so that's some of the examples of how it can happen okay for the next step in this procedure what you want to do is coat these you don't need to mesh tape them [Music] it do it just do it
