there is a lot of hype and a lot of confusion about what the Apple Vision Pro is and what it isn't questions about what it does how it's more or less just a meta Quest 3 whether it can support multiple screens whether it plays VR games just just lots of confusion I've got a quest 3 and I'm also primarily an Apple user so let's compare the two headsets and determine exactly what you should expect on Vision Pro launch day meta has made huge strides in hand tracking since it debuted on the quest in the right lighting conditions you can control most of the quests without ever touching controllers like the Apple Vision Pro using just your hands you can launch apps you can adjust the screen size you can even move windows with pinch gestures to control submenus unlike Apple the quest doesn't have eye tracking and this is a key distinction and depending on how you use your headset it's a big deal breaker maybe Apple has implemented an intuitive eye tracking system you look at an icon and the downward facing cameras capture the really subtle gestures of your fingers you just pinch no exaggerated hand movements you're not Tony Stark and Iron Man you pinch and the command triggers at any point you can pinch and pull to increase the screen size or push it away to affect the distance it's simple it's obvious and meta software just doesn't do that not seamlessly anyway because of how Quest tracks your movements accidentally shifting your hands triggers all kinds of chaos good luck keeping your screens in place 99% of the time it's easier to use the quest 3 controllers because fighting with the software just isn't Fun meta kind of has a neat way of disabling the controllers by tapping them together but dancing between hand gestures and physical controls becomes annoying even resizing and moving screens isn't as seamless as what you see from The Vision Pro on the quest there are two views and there's a little button to activate a smaller more more intimate version of the screen this is actually the way I prefer using the quest with hand tracking you tap buttons and slide your fingers across what's essentially a floating virtual tablet images are sharper and it looks cool when you have the headset pass through enabl the other view is the distance view now this is the closest to what Apple's showing off on their Vision Pro here you can scale the screen to ridiculous sizes you can even pull up the quest browser and use the internet with multiple windows because the screen is further away I had more success using the controllers adjusting screen sizes closing windows pulling edges and precision button presses works better with the pointer like interface of a physical input at least in meta system I can't count how many times I've tried to drag a screen with me as I walk through the room but if I look away for a second I leave the screen hanging there in Virtual space you have to be cautious of that now I suspect Apple would have the same problem too the two headsets are more similar than people want to admit they're both in incredible Tech but the giant blinking red flashing light splitting the two is software Apple made a big deal of its partnership with Disney you've already heard that Netflix and YouTube won't allow their apps to play natively on the Apple Vision Pro you have to go through the browser so there's no immersive wraparound VR element like apple loves to show off in their commercials with Apple TV and Disney apps you'll get the full resolution experience on the headset and if you purchase the larger storage capacity models you'll likely be able to download 4K movies to watch whenever you don't have an internet connection so like on a plane or in a car or considering the wealth of the average Apple fan a cozy chatau with no Wi-Fi as for the custom backgrounds that Disney showed off as cool backdrops for the Vision Pro meta has had the ability for third party apps to make custom environments for years the quality of those environments might not be as high res as Apple's Landscapes and believe me Apple's background and screen savers look stunning but apps like blink traveler on the quest offers a Grand Canyon backdrop for any user that wants it as you can see Meta and apple have very similar options here The Vision Pro is pretty much an iPad Pro for your face the iPad has some games lots of Apple arcade games it's not a gaming console I use my iPad as a supplement to my laptop which when hooked up to a monitor is my primary computer The Vision Pro expands your existing workflow your existing habits while adding multitasking and media consumption in the seamless way you expect from being invested in an all Apple ecosystem I used to be a video editor and fil producer for years and I've had to work in some pretty tight spaces I mean even now I'm tucked away in a tiny windowless closet so it would be really nice to expand my work area with huge additional screens and to take my setup anywhere on the go now sure I want to do a little gaming I want to get editing work done I want to listen to music and to talk on Discord and I don't want to jump through a bunch of technical hurdles to do that stuff I've tried every app on the quest 3 to do exactly those things and nothing is ideal the resolution of the cameras is fantastic on the quest 3 but not good enough to do any real extended video editing I love the work rooms app on the quest this lets me pull in multiple screens for my desktop that's something Apple Vision Pro doesn't actually do currently so Advantage meta but the trade-off is that the screen positioning is locked you can work in a mixed reality but you're just extending your desktop in a virtual space you can't change the size or affect the distance of the screens and those screens maxed out at three now I could bring in my laptop with meta's remote desktop app this works exactly like bringing your laptop into the Apple Vision Pro you get one screen and just like the Vision Pro you can scale it in the distance view but unlike Vision Pro there's not really a system that supports opening up non browser related apps so as a productivity machine for existing Apple users and that's me the Apple Vision Pro's high price almost makes up for the high frustration of trying to make the quest do productivity that it wasn't designed for and that's fine because the quest is an amazing media consumption and VR Gaming device the reality is that Apple made a $3,500 iPad Pro with a battery attached to a wire the obvious intended use case for the Apple Vision Pro is to plug in the system and get to work of course with some distractions if you need to move to another location or disengage yourself for brief periods that's what the batteries for But ultimately the Apple Vision Pro is what meta really wanted the meta Quest Pro toy meta just didn't have the software pipeline to make that Vision a reality if you're looking for something mobile for Fitness for playing true VR games that's not just flat games projected onto a 2d panel The Meta Quest 3 does everything the Apple Vision Pro does and it's just $500 there's so much to say about how similarly these Giants approached VR but the split is Apple's approach to Social and I think here is where meta gets it right the initial promise of all of this Tech wasn't to just past computers to your face that's cool and that's helpful but the goal was to utilize Tech to bring people together distance and interface would no longer be limitations meta seems have taken this to heart with apps like Horizon worlds allowing people to congregate in the okay in the metaverse there's also gaming experiences and shared spaces that let people play and work together meta is getting more aggressive at creating mixed reality apps and features like the upcoming augments that pulls digital assets and experiences into the real world this stuff is really exciting and cool it makes me want to use the metatech in ways that take me away from the isolation of my work life one of the most exciting things Apple showed off was the ability to connect FaceTime calls to your Vision Pro I love the idea of seeing my friends in my virtual space even friends who don't have a Vision Pro meta has WhatsApp and Messenger on the quest neither for some reason allows you to p in video which is a shame as it's the perfect counter to FaceTime Apple also showed off their personas these are creepy Avatar representations of people inside of Vision Pro no thanks it feels a lot more comfortable talking to meta's cartoony avatars they might be cartoony but I I can do that for hours and if more realistic avatars is what you're looking for meta showed off similar better technology recently on the Lex Freedman podcast so you can expect that in the near future I guess in the end it all comes down to deciding how you want to use the headset disregarding price these headsets are pretty much at feature parody Apple software and ecosystem integration is the Vision Pro secret weapon but meta no slouch in being the headset that I'd enjoy using a lot more most of the time if meta can improve their software experiences improve their camera improve their lenses improve their integration with existing hardware and continue making incredible gain while leveraging the advantages of being a juggernaut in the VR space let's just say I doubt Apple holds the final word on spatial Computing I wouldn't be surprised if we see something very close to the best features of the Apple Vision Pro at half the price for meta in the next [Music] year
