jesus the word incarnate revealing himself to us in the sunday readings today is the first sunday of the lenten season which began on ash wednesday when we were reminded of our mortality and our need to repent of our sins but what leads us to sin today's gospel offers us an answer temptation while in the desert the devil tempted jesus the devil wanted jesus to use his power to satisfy his hunger he wanted jesus to worship him in exchange for all the kingdoms in the world he wanted him to test god's capacity to save him if he fell from the parapet of the temple but jesus rebuked the devil jesus is convinced that god's word is enough there is no other god worthy of his worship god's protection and providence are true he rebuked the devil because he knows the scriptures and trusts in the power of god's word a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses spoke to the people saying the priest shall receive the basket from you and shall set it in front of the altar of the lord your god then you shall declare before the lord your god my father was a wandering aramian who went down to egypt with a small household and lived there as an alien but there he became a nation great strong and numerous when the egyptians maltreated and oppressed us imposing hard labor upon us we cried to the lord the god of our fathers and he heard our cry and saw our affliction our toil and our oppression he brought us out of egypt with his strong hand an outstretched arm with terrifying power with signs and wonders and bringing us into this country he gave us this land flowing with milk and honey therefore i have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you o lord have given me and having set them before the lord your god you shall bow down in his presence the word of the lord [Music] be with me lord when i am [Music] in trouble lord when i am in trouble [Music] shelter of the most high [Music] say to the lord my refuge and fortress my god in who be with me lord when i am in [Music] affliction near your tent for to his angels he has given commands of all that they guard you in all your ways [Music] upon their hands they shall bear you up lest you dash your foot against a stone you shall spent the viper you shall trample down [Music] [Music] because he cleans to me i will deliver him i will set him high because he acknowledges my name [Music] he shall call upon me and i will answer him i will be with him in [Music] distress i will deliver and glorify [Music] me with me lord when i am in trouble me with me lord when i am in trouble [Music] [Music] a reading from the letter of paul to the romans brothers and sisters what does scripture say the word is near you in your mouth and in your heart that is the word of faith that we preach for if you confess with your mouth that jesus is lord and believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead you will be saved for one believes with a heart and so is justified and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved for the scripture says no one who believes in him will be put to shame for there is no distinction between jew and greek the same lord is lord of all enriching all who call upon him for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord [Music] declare your faith on this first sunday of lent we are invited by our readings not only to have faith but to share that faith declaring your faith giving witness to your faith a faith that is not shared confessed or declared would eventually die as faith faith is not for us to keep and to lock up how do we declare our faith in the first reading from the book of deuteronomy the setting is almost like a liturgical act a liturgical act focused on the memory of a people the memory of their humble beginnings my father was a wandering aramian and because of poverty because of hunger they migrated to egypt and there they became a great nation numerous but they were subjected also to slavery and harsh treatment in the context of that humiliation god showed this mighty hand by being close to his people and liberating them and now they have reached the land that was offered to them and promised to them by god now they can cultivate the land and as an act of faith they bring to god the first fruits of the land it is like as i said a liturgical act of thanksgiving a declaration of faith based on a living memory of what god had done to his people faith nurtured by memory memory that is narrated and kept alive every year by the constant narration and declaration declaration through narrative and thanksgiving what a beautiful way to declare faith not just through form you lay that are abstract but declaring faith through my lived experience of god saving action in me and in my family and in my people and it leads to worship gratitude and also you know a testimony to the people that god is alive that god walks with his a beautiful declaration of faith in the second reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans aha here we see that faith the faith of the romans came from the apostolic teaching the word that has been preached to them and which they have received this is the source of faith the word of god and saint paul thanks the romans for receiving the word of faith now he adds something faith in the heart nurtured by the word of god is important [Music] but faith in the heart must also be accompanied by confession with the lips it's the total person that receives and declares faith we cannot say oh i have faith in my heart and that's enough no saint paul will say yes faith in the heart leads to justification but confessing your faith with your lips as an act of apostolic sharing as an act of joyful proclamation of what you have seen and have heard that will lead to your salvation so my dear brothers and sisters if we want to complete the journey of salvation faith in the heart and confession with the lips must always come together declare your faith [Music] the proclamation of the holy gospel according to luke filled with the holy spirit jesus returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit into the desert for forty days to be tempted by the devil he ate nothing during those days and when they were over he was hungry the devil said to him if you are the son of god command the stone to become bread jesus answered him it is written one does not live on bread alone then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant the devil said to him i shall give to you all this power and glory for it has been handed over to me and i may give it to whomever i wish all this will be yours if you worship me jesus said to him in reply it is written you shall worship the lord your god and him alone shall you serve then he led him to jerusalem and made him stand on the parapet of the temple and said to him if you are the son of god throw yourself down from here for it is written he will command his angels concerning you to guard you and with their hands they will support you lest you dash your foot against the stone jesus said to him in reply it also says you shall not put the lord your god to the test when the devil had finished every temptation he departed from him for a time the gospel of the lord declare your faith on this first sunday of lent we are invited to deepen and renew our faith in the saving action of jesus at the same time the readings inspire us to not only have faith but to declare it in the first reading we see how the people of israel declared their faith by going back to their history faith nurtured by a living memory of what god has done to them but the memory was not kept to themselves that memory becomes the inspiration for a liturgical act of praising god of offering to god the first fruits of creation and then passing on that faith through narrative to the next generation in the second reading saint paul tells the romans that they themselves have received the faith through the word of god preached to them by the apostles so faith in the heart must be accompanied by confession by the lips the two together faith in the heart leads to justification but confession on the lips leads to salvation now we have the gospel the gospel is about the so-called temptations of jesus after his baptism he was led by the spirit to the desert and there he fasted for 40 days in solitude in hunger the tempter came to him if we look at the three temptations they may sound for us quite good offers if you are supposed to be the savior the offers the three offers of the evil one the tempter looked logical and they looked pragmatic achievable and from one point of view you will say wait if i agree to these offers then my task as a savior will be facilitated imagine you can provide bread to the hungry imagine you can have possession take possession of all the kingdoms of this world and you can distribute all of those and then you can present yourself as someone who has supernatural powers so your following will increase but why are they temptations there are temptations because they are not in harmony with god's plan of salvation another type of messiah comes in jesus so the temptation is for jesus to choose the type of messiahship offered by satan or the type of messiahship that his father wants him to assume which is a suffering messiah and in the midst of this temptation which i said no at the beginning looked wow attractive every temptation is attractive every temptation presents itself as something good jesus declared his faith first no one lives on bread alone but by every word of god he declares his faith in the word of god to the devil next he says well i will not worship anyone else it is only god that i will worship a declaration of faith and then jesus said no i will not do what you want me to do in order to gain fame you are using the name of god but in the end it is fame no i will not put god into the test i will not tempt god before the devil jesus did not negotiate jesus did not compromise before temptation jesus declared his faith and the devil left him but according to saint luke the devil will wait for another time to tempt jesus and it will be at a moment very close to his passion declare our faith as an act of thanksgiving declare our faith as an act of our belief in justification by god and salvation declare our faith as our weapon against temptations when i visited years ago a refugee camp one refugee who was not a christian asked me you catholics why are you here why are you doing all of these sacrifices and good things for us we don't even belong to you we belong to another faith i felt that he opened the door for me to declare my faith so i said my lord and master jesus christ taught us to love everyone we are here to love the world has been exposed let us now fulfill it [Music] this lenten season we shall reflect on some key words that will hopefully help us observe lent meaningfully for the first installment of this series let us look at the term resist resist means withstand the action or effect of something it is to remain undamaged or unaffected by it what is this thing that we must resist temptation saint james tells us that we are facing temptation when we are lured and enticed by our own desire which conceives and brings forth sin desire will conceive and bring forth sin when it is according to saint paul corrupted from a sincere and pure commitment to christ let us learn from the mystery of judas iscariot the gospels describe him as the one in charge of the moneybag of the disciples and helps himself to what is deposited there he would eventually hand over their master to the chief priests in exchange for 30 pieces of silver judas was consumed by a mysterious desire was it to enrich himself was it to save himself from the danger of being associated with jesus we cannot judge his heart but the gospels are straightforward in indicating the role of the tempter saint luke says satan entered into judas when he conspired with the chief priests the outcome was the corruption of his commitment to jesus the evil one acted on him and he failed to resist the tempter's promptings he chose to hand over jesus in exchange for some benefits what can we learn from judas's experience pope francis teaches us [Music] the devil will promise anything for us to give in to his subtle corruption of our desires but he will also leave us in despair because following him who is the father of lies we do not achieve what we desire this is the reason why jesus did not engage with the devil when he tempted him in the desert jesus resisted the devil's temptation by holding on to his genuine desires it is god's word that he desires for his nourishment it is god whom he desires to worship it is god's protection that he desires because god is faithful and true to his words jesus remained undamaged and unaffected by the devil's temptations because his desires are of god this is how we could resist or withstand the actions of the evil one lord help us resist the temptations we face every day purify our desires amen [Music] we have prepared reflection points for you please share them with your companions the first point is what prevents you from declaring your faith the second point is how can we guide the youth to a humble and joyful confession of faith in jesus [Music] heavenly father you have blessed this humble program with a decade of mission on air you have gifted it with the talents hard work and financial support of many generous people so
