the word incarnate revealing himself to us in the sunday readings today is the seventh sunday in ordinary time in the gospel we shall hear jesus teaching his disciples to follow the way of god he tells them be merciful just as your father is merciful the victim includes loving your enemies doing good to those who hate you blessing those who curse you praying for those who mistreat you offering the other cheek to those who strike you giving your tunic to those who take your cloak and giving to everyone who asks something of you without demanding its return this is quite a lot but is it doable this is how god loves and god will enable us to do so [Music] a reading from the first book of the prophet samuel in those days saul went down to the desert of zif with three thousand picked men of israel to search for david in the desert of zif so david and abishai went among saul's soldiers by night and found saul lying asleep within the barricade with his spear thrust into the ground at his head and abner and his men sleeping around him abishai whispered to david god has delivered your enemy into your grasp this day let me nail him to the ground with one thrust of the spear i will not need a second thrust but david said to abishai do not harm him for who can lay hands on the lord's anointed and remain unpunished so david took the spear and the water jug from their place at saul's head and they got away without anyone seeing or knowing or awakening all remained asleep because the lord had put them into a deep slumber going across to an opposite slope david stood on a remote hilltop at a great distance from abner son of nur and the troops he said here is the king's spear let an attendant come over to get it the lord will reward each man for his justice and faithfulness today though the lord delivered you into my grasp i would not harm the lord's anointed [Music] the word of the [Music] lord is kind and merciful the lord is kind and merciful bless the lord o my soul and all my being bless his holy name the lord o my soul and forget not all his benefits [Music] is [Music] he redeems your life from destruction crowns you with kindness and compassion the lord is kind and merciful [Music] merciful and gracious is the lord [Music] [Applause] in kindness not according to our sins does he deal with us nor does he require according to our cries the lord is kind and merciful [Music] so far has he put our transgressions from as the father has compassion on his children so the lord has compassion on those [Music] the lord is [Music] the lord kind and merciful [Music] do a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters it is written the first man adam became a living being the last adam a life-giving spirit but the spiritual was not first rather the natural and then the spiritual the first man was from the earth earthly the second man from heaven as was the earthly one so also are the earthly and as is the heavenly one so also are the heavenly just as we have borne the image of the earthly one we shall also bear the image of the heavenly one the word of the lord unfake love nowadays the terminology fake fake news etc no seems to be in vogue so we try now with the help of our readings to rediscover the path of true sincere love or what we might call unfake love love that is not fake and it is always divine love for god is love for where else can we learn love and loving in the first reading wow some people might say david you are blessed you are blessed finally you can take revenge imagine saul and his soldiers have been looking for you david and now you find them asleep you have your chance right now you can finish them off without anyone knowing that you did it in fact that was the thinking of the assistant of david abishai wow lord my lord david you are really blessed by god god has has surrendered into your hands the king your enemy and look at them oh they are sound asleep we can all hack them to death this is a time of blessing don't waste it david gave an answer which will show to us the greatness of this man he has his flaws he has his sinfulness but there is this greatness in david who is the forefather of jesus he said no even if the opportunity is here even if my emotions hurt by saul are raging even if politically he could rise to become the next king [Music] he would not do it david shows to us a type of loving and therefore a type of discernment that goes beyond hatred outbursts of emotions vengeance or political ambitions no his only reason was this i will not hurt the anointed of the lord my enemy saul was chosen by god to be king he is angry with me but god chose him and i will respect god see how david would be considered foolish by the world many people will condemn him for being a poor strategist but that was not the norm for david it was love and love that reads the mind of the lord in the second reading saint paul uses the image of the earthly person referring to adam and the spiritual person referring to jesus while all of us resemble the first person adam we have inherited not only his being dust his being flesh but also his being sinful and because of adam we all deserve to be banished we all deserve to be turned away we all deserve to be to be disowned by god but what do we get what do we get in reality what we get is something what we do not deserve in the spiritual man jesus we have been offered immortality we have been offered adoption as children of god we have been given what we do not deserve this is how god loves this is unfake love this is a love that is not dictated upon by transactions or limited views of what you have done and what you have what you deserve the love of god is mysteriously overflowing touching even those who do not deserve it and thanks to that love we can attain to eternal life we could rise with jesus to new life my dear brothers and sisters let us behold in david behold in jesus this love which is not of this world but it is true love it is unfaith love [Music] a proclamation from the holy gospel according to luke jesus said to his disciples to you who hear i say love your enemies do good to those who hate you bless those who curse you pray for those who mistreat you to the person who strikes you on one cheek offer the other one as well and from the person who takes your cloak do not withhold even your tunic give to everyone who asks of you and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back do to others as you would have them do to you for if you love those who love you what credit is that to you even sinners love those who love them [Music] and if you do good to those who do good to you what credit is that to you even sinners do the same if you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment what credit is that to you even sinners lend to sinners and get back the same amount but rather love your enemies and do good to them and land expecting nothing back then your reward will be great and you will be children of the most high for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked be merciful just as your father is merciful stop judging and you will not be judged stop condemning and you will not be condemned forgive and you will be forgiven give and gifts will be given to you a good measure packed together shaken down and overflowing will be poured into your lap for the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you [Music] the gospel of the lord unfake love we all long for sincere true love the world is suffering because of pseudo-love oh even on the international level the relationships of countries among themselves the relationship of a business big business corporations among themselves we wonder is this true love is this true caring how do we find true love in the world in a world where we talk about fake news or fake messages where can we find unfake love we thank david in the first reading for showing us that outburst of anger the thirst for revenge or even strategies don't matter when you love someone when you love someone in god then you spare the life of that enemy which he did sparing the life of saul who was bent on killing him he could have taken advantage of the situation but he read the mind of god saul my enemy was chosen by god i will not harm him in the second reading saint paul reminds us we who bear the marks of the first human being adam in being dust and flesh and sinful in jesus christ the spiritual person we have been given the love that we do not deserve such that the offer of eternal life is given to us true love true love the gospel will intensify this reflection jesus talks about a love which we might consider false love and how does he describe it he says if you love this way then you don't get credit for it you gain nothing it's as though you did not love why he says even sinners do the same thing even sinners love this way aha how do sinners love and this is false love according to jesus sinners love this way they love only those who love them they love those who praise them do good only to those who do good to them so you wonder is this love of the other is this love of the other person maybe not it is false love because in the end it is using other people for my self-interest you love me so i love you so that you will continue loving me you are kind to me and you are generous to me you give me something i will love you so that you will continue giving me something so the other person does not really count what counts is me me me so jesus says that's how sinners love and that's not how you should love the sinners also are calculating i lent you this you must give me back the same amount and with interest sinners do that that's not how you should love my dear brothers and sisters we are so used to this type of loving that it has become normal and we probably accept it but this sunday let jesus's words hurt us even sinners love that way now what is true love according to jesus the way god loves loving enemies loving those who hate you loving those who persecute you loving those who plot evil against you giving to those who cannot repay you and giving more than what they ask that is true love to love the unlovable to love those who despise you for this is how god loves and that's the bottom line true love is not how sinners love but how god loves the world is in need of this love in order to heal wounds of division in order to stop violence corruption abuse and mutual destruction the world has become a better place because we had a nelson mandela who after being freed from prison said we cannot go the path of violence but of reconciliation the world was better because we had an archbishop desmond tutu who after being maligned so many times still believed in the power of compassion reconciliation towards enemies how we were touched by the witness of saint john paul ii meeting the person who tried to kill him and becoming not only a father but a brother to him and we know a new world is possible this is not human effort this is god's gift let us open ourselves to god and i'm sure god will not fail us god will enable us to be loving and compassionate as he is the word has been exposed let us now fulfill fulfilled [Music] [Music] in the previous episode of our series on jesus healing we remember the healing of the deaf man with speech impediment in the decapolis it was not only a healing moment but a teaching moment too when jesus opened the ears of the man and loosened his tongue he was also teaching him and us to become open to others in their need today let us recall the experience of those who were possessed by evil spirits and demons their being enslaved by these spirits resulted in strange behavior painful physical condition and estrangement from their family and community jesus freed them from possession by evil and restored their good health let us dwell on the experience of the man from the tombs who had an unclean spirit in the gerasenes no one among his town's people could subdue him he pulled apart the chains attached to him he even hurt himself but at the sight of jesus the man ran up and prostrated himself before him the unclean spirit spoke asking jesus not to torment him when asked about his name the unclean spirit said legion for there were many of them they pleaded with jesus to be sent into the swine when the unclean spirits entered the swine of about 2000 they rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned the man was found by his town's people clothed and in his right mind but they were seized with fear they even begged jesus to leave their district when jesus was getting to the boat to depart from the place the man pleaded to remain with him but jesus won't let him why because he would want him to do something [Music] his healing and freedom from the unclean spirit should be an opportunity to finally be reunited with his family and to proclaim what god's mercy has done for him he would give witness to jesus jesus brought him back so to speak to his family because the unclean spirit took him away from them and at the same time jesus gave him new life the man will no longer cry out among the tombs and on the hillsides because he will now announce all that the lord in his pity has done for him from being an outcast he is now transformed into an evangelizer pope francis reminds us [Music] indeed it is god in jesus who brought the man from gerasenes out of his miserable condition to a new mission we pray that the lord would also bring us to his light especially during these trying times amen [Music] we have prepared reflection points for you please share them with your companions the first point is what are the manifestations of falls or self-seeking love in our society so the second point is how can we guide the youth to love even those who do not like them papanus [Music] heavenly father you have blessed this humble program with a decade of mission on air you have gifted it with the talents hard work and financial support of many generous people so that as your word is exposed many more may know love and serve jesus lord jesus be with us always your production staff and partners your viewers and benefactors that we may not run out of courage zeal and charity in fulfilling our mission daily and when our limitations and weaknesses surface please ask the father to send the holy spirit to purify us and set our hearts on fire with renewed faith hope and love so we may serve you for many more years to come amen friends thank you for your company we pray that the word of god would find fulfillment in your life and his blessings be always upon you and we hope
