amen the lord be with you my brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries you were sent to heal the contrite of heart lord have mercy lord have mercy you came to call sinners christ have mercy christ have mercy you are seated at the right hand of the father to intercede for us lord have mercy lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life let us pray prompt our actions with your inspiration we pray o lord and further them with your constant help that all we do may always begin from you and by you be brought to completion through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses said to the people today i have set before you life and prosperity death and doom if you obey the commandments of the lord your god which i enjoin on you today loving him and walking hearts and will not listen but are led astray and adore and serve other gods i tell you now that you will certainly perish you will not have a long life on the land that you are crossing the jordan praise to you lord jesus christ king of endless glory the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you lord jesus said to his disciples the son of man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders the chief priests and the scribes and be killed and on the third day be raised then he said to all if anyone wishes to come after me he must deny himself take up his cross daily and follow me forever wishes to save his life will lose it but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it what prophet is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or forfeit himself the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ yesterday in dramatic fashion with ash wednesday we entered headlong into our observance of lent no longer now do we follow the normal sequence of gospels and readings now the readings of mass are dictated by the ancient traditions of lent in every way the emphasis is being put on our preparation for easter and so what we see today in our gospel is a kind of laser focus on the passion death and resurrection of jesus christ this is a good thing to keep in mind every day during lent what is being proposed in today's short gospel is christ's first announcement of his passion to his disciples with these words jesus begins to teach his followers that he is the messiah but not the messiah that they were expecting contrary to the wisdom of the time the messiah was not destined for worldly glory he would not be a political ruler to unite israel and to drive out the roman occupation he is instead the suffering servant of isaiah and soon he will be put to death for carrying out his mission of justice to be a follower of such a messiah means that we too share in that mission and we share in the cross as well christ himself couldn't have said it more clearly if anyone wishes to come after me he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and come after me this is the fate of every disciple of christ there's no other way to share in the resurrection that follows as saint paul says in his letter to the galatians the world has been crucified to me and i to the world so today god sets before us the same choice that he set before the hebrew people in our first reading in fact it's a choice that is set between or set before every human person really at every moment god says to us i have set before you life and prosperity death and doom the way to life is the way of god which is the narrow way of the cross it's the way that we follow now keeping company with christ during lent and learning from our master it's the logic that animates all of our lenten penances all of our little sacrifices that we make even in these small and un or small and ordinary these unremarkable things we take some share in the cross of christ we willingly follow him on the way the season of lent teaches us the fundamental lesson that we must all learn that we have to take up our crosses and embrace them even learn to love them that we must lose our life in a thousand small and unremarkable and ordinary ways because it's only when we lose ourselves in the love of god and others that we can be saved with trust in the lord let us present to him these petitions for pope francis bishops and priests may god continue to bless their ministries as they lead his flock let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for judges may the holy spirit grant them wisdom in making just decisions let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all who feel unworthy of god's forgiveness may the lord open their hearts to the gift of his mercy that he is eager to to bestow let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those in our faith community may christ the lamb lead us in a spirit of blessed seraphim worship together with exaltation may our voices we pray join with theirs in humble praise as we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy oh lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death o lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and david our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever amen the peace of the lord be with you always let us offer each other
