(gentle instrumental music) - As you can see here,
it's really low light, we've got this massive spotlight on us because we need to light up this wall for a crazy feature that I am doing. So I really wanna bring some
character in this space, it is for an event, so
it's meant to be fun and whimsical and quite feminine. So I'm actually going to
do a life-size patchwork. I'm gonna measure out this wall, and using white battens,
I'm gonna do a patchwork that is a combination
of paint and wallpaper. So first step is to get
those hooks out of the wall and then to measure up my grid. (upbeat music) All right, Denise, this is going to be the crazy wall number two
that I told you about. - I have no idea what
this is gonna look like. You try and explain it to me and all I can think of is like 80s, weird, I don't know. - Do you kind of zone
out when I explain stuff? - A little bit. I don't get it, but I trust you. - Thank you. Well, I have fool proofed it in that we don't have to like match up paint. We're gonna have big battens
that are going to go over it and a builder be installing those. So we're not gonna be responsible for any of the final touches with the timber. - Yes. - We--
- Yeah 'cause I was thinking how am I gonna get things straight? - Imagine matching two paints. (chuckling) - I didn't know, honestly. I'm having nightmares about it. - So we have two wallpapers, this one is from Milton
& King and I adore it. - That is stunning. Is that from England, when
you say Milton & King? - I think so, and it's, so it's a removable self adhesive, which is really cool. So it's kind of like
covering school books. This is the other-- - Which I sucked at,
by the way, at school. - So I did, I got bubbles in them. This is another gorgeous one. This is from England,
this is a Carl Robinson. And it's very romantic. - It's beautiful, and it's shiny. - It is, it's got like a pearlescent, mother of pearl sort of look to it. And then we're gonna
have a bit of fun, right? Because this isn't a forever wall. This is a just be amazing, have fun wall. So I'm just going to show you some colors. - Why are you looking at me like that? Like... - I'm nervous. - Why? - So this is color number one. (gasping)
- I love it. - You cool with that?
- I love it. I love it, love it. Kind of like the color of the overalls I was wearing on day one. - Yes, but with a bit more green. - I love it. I thought it, because it
says white on the tin, and I was thinking she's
just doing a fake out. - No!
- It's gonna be white. - No. No, I'm not!
(laughing) So what we actually did with
these is we bought a massive container of the paint, because
paint is cheaper in volume, and then we got it decanted
into different colors. 'Cause it's the same paint type. So rather than buying little one liters, which always cost you more money, you can actually buy a
bigger volume of paint and decant it out.
- That makes sense. And we've got so many
little bitty things as well. - [Naomi] Oh My gosh, we do. - And even if we had just a little bit, we'd find something to paint. - My gosh.
- You know? - There are so many things to paint. We just need to get this off. Ready?
- Yeah. (gasping) Aw! - She's soft, isn't she?
- Very chalky and marshmallowy. - That's a perfect, it is marshmallowy. - Marshmallowy and you can just, you can taste the sugar of it almost. - Okay. So if we want to have fun, we need to have--
- Magenta? Oh, I like, yeah, pink, pink, pink. Really pretty. - So it's kind of--
- Really pretty. - Candy, but it's not, it's not obnoxious and it's not brazen, which I thought was important. So I wanted to have some
fun and be a bit like out there, but I didn't want to, I kind of wanted to just go
one step deeper than that. And these guys had to talk. I was worried if I went
magenta I would feel a little outspoken. So I'm gonna leave you, now, on your own self.
- Why would you leave me? - I'm gonna leave you
all on your own self to, I wanna see all of the
painted patches done by the time, I'm going to loosely put that one on because that lid's nearly dead. And by the time I get
back in the morning, okay? You can do it.
- I can do it. - I believe.
- Thanks. (upbeat music) - Denise did an amazing job! Look, I left her to
patchwork paint last night, and it looks fantastic. So now that we've sort
of marked out our grid, we've painted in our squares, I'm gonna wallpaper in the squares and then it's gonna be perfectly ready for the builders to come and
put the battens on tomorrow. So it's looking good, good job, Denise. (upbeat music) So when you wallpapering like this, often they come with a squeegee, I use a credit card or a driver's license. I attach the top edge, and you can see, I haven't pulled the
whole backing off it yet 'cause that would be dangerous. Just like when you got into a mess covering your kids' school books. So I like to have one hand
underneath and I slowly pull the backing down. It's bit of a fiddle, but I slowly the backing down as I go down with the credit card. Just nice and slowly. See? That's good. The second wallpaper that I'm
popping up is very different to the first, the first
thing is it's wider. So we don't have to worry so much that we're going to miss
the gaps with the battening. And it's also not already self adhesive. So we actually need to use
good old fashioned glue for this wallpaper. Now I don't mind using
glue with wallpaper. I don't mind the non-self adhesive, I actually find them easier to lay. But one thing I do enjoy is
I like using a premixed glue. Look, it's quite thick. It doesn't tip out. And I find that this is
much quicker and much easier than the glue for wallpaper
that you can mix up. So you can get one that comes as a powder and you mix it up with water
to make your own paste. But I love these because I know
the proportions are perfect, the consistency is perfect,
so it's going to be perfect. Even when you are using
a glue for the wallpaper, all different wallpapers
have different instructions. So previously I've used ones
where you apply the glue to the paper, make sure
you read the instructions. This one actually wants you
to apply the glue to the wall and then sponge the paper on. When you're popping this on, it can get quite thick 'cause
it literally is like glue, funnily enough. So make sure that it isn't, you know, a centimeter thick and I
generally cross hatch it to make sure I've got plenty of area. You don't need to like
now run for the wallpaper, you've got a little bit
of time before that sets (upbeat music) Yeah, you can come look at the crazy wall. - Oh my gosh, it looks so pretty. So nice.
- That's cute, hey? - [Denise] It's gorgeous. (upbeat music) - [Naomi] Thanks for tuning in. Make sure you're following me on Instagram to see my latest design
