well hello everyone if you don't know me my name is Morgan Malcolm and this is my channel love where you live so today is a fun day I like this project that we just got done doing and I'm going to show you how to do so I think one of the underused areas of decorating a house is with paint and not just painting entire walls it's using a little accents to make kind of a decorative wall or kind of a statement one instead of just having that be a solid color using shapes and different things to make it a little bit more interesting and a little different than the normal so there are some ways to make this project much easier and I'm going to go through it as we're doing the project and as I'm showing it to you and give you some those tips and tricks on how to make it as smooth as possible and as quick of a process as you can make it because no one likes projects to take many hours or days to do so this one is super fun the biggest thing is going to be picking colors that work with whatever your themes are in your house if you're doing a specific room so the room we're doing is actually in my son's room and he already had a color scheme kind of going but I let him pick the accent color and what I really recommend is if you're going to do multiple colors like I did I think we ended up with five four or five colors do only one as your main accent color so one bright color so we have black gray white and then he did an orange as his accent color this way it makes it look a little bit more put together and not quite so many things pulling focus you want to have just maybe one of those big pops of color and then it really stands out so this is just really a fun project just a really quick thing that you can do I will like to say that if you are selling your house keep in mind that you're gonna want to paint over any of this and make your room back to a neutral room this is one of those projects that I believe is a part of loving where you live yes so that you can enjoy your house while you're living in it but if you're trying to sell it you still want it to appeal to as many people as possible so well I think that this is a very neutral type of project that a lot of people would like they still may not work with how they want to use your house or that room or anything specific so keep in mind you'll want to paint over it if you're going to sell your house so if you're planning on moving don't do this now wait till you move and then do it in your new house all right all right let's go ahead and get started so to get started let's go over some things you're gonna need so I like these little rollers I like the 3-inch ones you'll need a flathead screwdriver something to pour the paint into so these are paint pans or paint tins and then the paint colors that you would like and then also tape I use the frog tape but whatever you like best I find this one works really well with the textured walls next you'll need to decide on what shape you want so we're going with the hexagon I recommend doing something with straight edges it makes it much easier with the tape and you'll also need a poster board to cut out your template with so something sturdier than paper and I just printed this off my computer so after its printed you're gonna want to fold it and get that center spot and then all of the points so that you can enlarge your template if you have it the right size that's great but I needed mine to be bigger than what my printer could do so you just go from the center to the point and then out the same distance from each one so we chose 7 inches and you make a dot and you do this for all of the points along the way and then this will help you enlarge your template and when you're done making all of the dots all you're going to do then is connect them all and then you can see what that looks like so now this is that template just much larger and you just go ahead and cut that out and this is the one you're going to use on your wall so this helps you decide what size you want you can change it step one is going to be figuring out where you want the first one so I chose to use the width of the tape from the ceiling in from the sidewall and then you just go around your template and you're going to just line it with your tape so this part you want the tape to be as close to the edges as possible I'll show you what I'm talking about a little later where they overlap and you have to go back and fix it we're just gonna go through and put up as many of the shapes as you would like I did more than I was going to use just so I could see what it looked like and it's easier to take them off after they're kind of up and then you can decide how many whatever of the shape is so hexagons for us how many I actually wanted up on the wall and what it kind of looked like when it was up there so something to keep in mind is you're not trying to fully cover your entire wall with this this is meant to be just kind of an accent or just a detail to it and it actually looks better when there are a little bit less so less is more with these projects and you'll see I kind of put them all up and then later on we'll step back and take a look at it and then change that so it would keep going along at the beginning I recommend using a level to keep that making sure you're your template is level so that when you're continuing to work you're not working cricket or off at all so if you feel like you're getting a little off just grab your level and double-check it usually if you start out with it level all of the other one should follow in line as long as you're not you know turning it or doing something strange but since all the lines line up it should go pretty smoothly so here I'm just trying to decide where I want them all if you don't have any set plan it is good to kind of draw it out on paper and see what it looks like I do a couple of random ones so right there was where I had it go too far and it would go the tape would go into the next hexagon so you just want to make sure the tape doesn't overlap too much where it goes into the next one over or whatever shape you have and then we're just going to keep going and put all the tape up I'll let you watch that for a bit [Music] okay so I always like to do a couple just random ones keeping that wall kind of going throughout if it's a big wall you kind of don't want to just stop it it kind of makes it look really abrupt so just pulling a few of those shapes on the other side of it and you'll also see I like it when it goes along like two walls or along a curve so right here is where I decided to do that on that side wall so you use that one last if you're going to do something like this because you have to bend your template so do those at the very end but this one just went into that corner right there it does make it a little harder you'll need to have a paintbrush as well as your roller because that roller will not get into the corners but it's a really fun little detail to add in and I'm just going along make sure that template is pressed really firmly in there into that corner and here's what I ended up with so I started taking some away and I felt like this was a good amount not too many hexagons we're not covering the whole wall but enough to add some just interest in detail to that wall over there so first thing you want to do is get your wall color so this is the actual wall color you're gonna barely dip your paintbrush into it and what we're gonna do here is an extra step that most people skip do not skip this you're gonna then go up to the tape and you're gonna press the paint towards the tape you're trying to get into any of those crevices you can see all of the texture on our walls and that is what causes the paint to bleed when you have tape on the wall it's all of these little grooves and things where the paint goes through and the tape just isn't all the way attached to the wall so by doing this with your wall color you seal in that tape and you kind of close off any of those little and openings and it really makes a huge difference and how much touch-up you have to do at the end so I'm gonna go through the whole thing and just do that real quick you only need a very little amount so you can see it's the very small it's like a sample size is what I got of our wall color because you're just going along the edges of that wall and especially the things with the corners you want to make sure you get those really well because those are really high likelihood of having any bleeds and anything like that and just go along everything and I'll let you watch me I'm just gonna paint through and it actually was pretty quick so this isn't that long of a process but go ahead and watch [Music] so now we're getting into the actual paint colors and I'm gonna put up at the end of this all of the paint colors that I used so you don't have to try to write down you want to double check that that lid is on really tight and then you want to shake it as much as humanly possible you really want your paint mixed really well before you start using it just so that all of that dye is mixed in and then you use a flathead screwdriver they make special can openers you don't need to buy one just use a flathead screwdriver and take the lid off I always do this in a pan or on some type of drop cloth or something just in case something happens where you drop the can or you drop something or you just don't want that to get on anything else so I'm going to open all of them and we're gonna try to plan out where all the colors are going so they don't I want them all open so I can kind of mark on the wall which color is where I'm not going to use them all at the same time so I'll put the lids back on after this is done and yeah we're just gonna open all of them mix them real well and then I'll show you how we kind of plan this out so I'd like to start with the biggest section and make sure that two of the same colors aren't touching each other and then as soon as you have your template kind of up on your wall you can start painting start with your lightest color it's really easy to you know want to do the big bold colors but start with the lightest it is the easiest to clean off if you're going to reuse the same roller head or paint brush and stuff like that again start lighter go to darker it's harder it's more likely the dark will stay in that roller if you're gonna try to do it the opposite way so I started with our white and I'm gonna do two coats of all of these these actually coated really well I might not have needed to do two but just because of all of the grooves and stuff I wanted to make sure I didn't have any spots that I missed and just make sure it was a really dark pigment that came through on each of them so I'm gonna just wait just a little bit in between basically by the time you're done with the last one that first one's pretty dry and you can just go ahead and redo it so I actually cleaned off that roller head and then used it for the gray for the other colors I actually get just used a new one this was the only one that I cleaned off and reused just because those colors were so so light and stuff it didn't matter you can see how dark this gray actually dries and that's the one of those things with paints where you put it on you're like oh it doesn't look like it's dark enough but it will dry either darker or sometimes they lighten so now we're gonna go to the orange which is our accent color and again you can use whatever colors whatever pattern you want you can make this much more neutral or even more bold if you want to you know I think the black is a pretty dark color for most people it's a little scary but I do think it adds a little bit extra dimension to this project and the black it did do two coats of two it coated really well the darker colors tend to bleed more and I'll show you at the end the ones the orange in the black are the only ones that have a little bit of bleed but I'll show you how to correct that at the end but that trick with using the wall color and going through the tape towards the tape is really important now when you're doing the other project so this part of it you want to pull towards the middle so not to the tape oh and this is the fun part oh look at those clean lines it's beautiful alright removing on the tape so this made me so sad that my camera didn't catch most of this but you get it you get the picture you pull off the tape there's really nice clean lines and everything looks beautiful evenly spaced and it's awesome so here's those little bits of bleed you're gonna take tape after this has fully dried I waited 24 hours and you want to get it as close on or a little bit over that line and you're gonna just really push that tape down so we're not going to do a whole lot here we're just gonna really push that tape in you can see I'm doing that really really hard and then we take our wall color and we're starting on the tape really important start on the tape and pull down you don't want to pull up towards the tape on this one is when you're going opposite because we don't want to now bleed into the black and have to fix that again so take that wall color on the tape pull down away from the other color and you just fix any of those little little bleed throughs that happened when you were painting the other one you can pull it off right away cuz that black was dry and oh look at how beautiful so a little one on this orange I really recommend even if it's a small one like this just go ahead and touch it up now cuz it these are things that I see later on that bother me so you might as well if you have it out and you have all the stuff together just go ahead and fix it while you're looking at it it takes two seconds you can see how fast that was and this is the most of the bleed so you can see how well that trick with the paint color and just really pushing that paint in really helps with eliminating having to do a whole lot of touch-up afterwards and it just makes those lines so crisp it makes these projects really fun to do and that one's done so now we'll take a look at what all of this ended up with so here is the finished wall and you can definitely do more if you want to or go on to other walls but this is how much we want it on this one if you haven't yet subscribed please hit subscribe and click that notification bell and if you liked the video please hit that thumbs up and we'll see you next
