Welcome back to another episode of TwoSet Violin. So a lot of people have been sending us this song called, uh... WAP. We haven't actually seen the music video, but we thought, why not bring our background in classical music training to react to this, um... WAP, and see how it goes. What does it mean? Wait, WAP stands for Wagner... Yeah. There you go. Wagner and Prokofiev. Whoa!! 160 million views! August. It's been like, one month? Just under. What's that divded by 2,000? - That's 80,000 concert halls packed. - 80,000. - That's amazing. 80,000 concert halls! - Dude... God. I guess people love this music, so. Let's see! What is that statue?! Oh, my god. I guess it's like, uh... Composers back in the day were inspired by - Roman fountains and stuff. - That's true. Well, this is it! Oh my god! It's like... Like La Mer, you know? The sea waves... Dude, my eyes! Nah, it's fine. It's WAP. We have to blend in with the young generation and understand the musical tastes. Dude, was that golden bums? I mean, I guess it's uh... Kinda like surreal artists. Like uh, you know Michaelangelo, those sculptures and stuff? - It's a modern day version. Yeah, yeah. - Yeah yeah yeah, it's a modern day of Michaelangelo. I like the, um, chromatic bassline. Very aesthetic, those... ...boobies, with water. Can I just say, those nails? You definitely can't play an instrument with that. That was a thing. I know in high school, a lot of casual musicians in the orchestras, not being able to have long nails - turned off a few people. - Yeah. Got some syncopation. I feel like if this was a symphony, it'd be the double bass. And the "yeah" would be like... The triangle. - The triangle! - Ding. Yeah! Animal symbolism was a big thing in classical music. Like, Swan Lake, Saint-Saëns. - There's the Carnival of the Animals. - The Carnival. Yeah. They love composing for animals. They're fierce animals here though. - Like, tiger, snakes. - Yeah. It's really going for this kind of, um... Actually, I don't even know what they're going for - at this point. - Yeah! Yeah. Dude! Is that real snakes? No way! As if they'd film with real snakes. Eddy: I'd get bitten. Dude, you gotta be Steve Irwin to be able to handle that stuff! Maybe it's like a motif that's just a part of the uh, musical genre, 'cause you know like Anaconda, right? - That was also snakes. - Oh, yeahh! Maybe the snake is like a... Like a legato line. It's like a turn. Yeah, like the mordent! For those of you that don't know, the turn is... It's like a little embellishment in classical music. That's what the snake means. Mmm. Actually, does the music have embellishments? It's pretty repetitive right now. It's like, kind of like Philip Glass. - Yeah, minimalistic, easy to listen to. - Yeah. There's not really a melody. - That's true. Yeah. - It's just very rhythmic, and percussive. This is so inte— - I can't even tell what she's singing. - Yeah. - So much... - I hear... I just hear... Interesting rhythm, though. That's 3 over 4. - Yeah, it's got that feeling. - Like, one-two-three. You know how in classical music, when there's two soloists, they usually play together? - That's true. Yeah yeah that's true. Yeah. - Like Mozart Concertante and Sarasate Navarra. But I've noticed with pop music, if there's two people, they take turns. - They do! They never go together. Yeah. - They never go together! I mean, they're together right now though. With snakes. "Pay my tuition just to kiss me"? I wasn't listening to the lyrics. Did I hear it right? I don't know the lyrics. I mean, that's very responsible. She wants to get the tuition and education first, before she kisses. - Ahhh! Oooh! - I think that's what she means. - Good messages! - Yeah! - I think that's a very good message to share, you know? - Man! I would tell my kids that. I would show them WAP. - Be like, "Get an education first." - Yeah! Yeah. Whoa. - Whoa. That - - Is this the second movement coming up? Yeah, but it's like a leopard now. But the leopard's on the person. So much symbolism. The leopard's like, "You killed my sister." Dude, that's what the leopard did! It's like, "That was my cousin. Why are you wearing my cousin?" Whoa! What? I've just never seen... Seen what?? That! In my life. I mean, yeah. She's flexible. - Dude, man. That is... I can't split like that. - I can't split like that. That split is like, crazy. This type of imagery reminds me of like, Bruckner. Or like, Strauss. Golden, warm, rich. Feels a bit like a German concert hall. Yeah. - Is it a leopard or a cow? - I know. Yeah. She's changing like, animal type. - It's like a Pokémon, just evolving. - Yeah. It's very like, in your face. Very... ...expressive costume. Con molto, molto expressivo. I wonder how, um... Ballet costume designers would see the evolution of - fashion expression over the years. - That's true. That's true. Because when Stravinsky first came out with the new ballet, it was like a riot, and everyone was like... I mean, they were kinda just jumping up and down, but back then it had people shocked. - It went from that to boobie fountains. - Yeah. It's very, uh... (both) i n t e r e s t i n g ... to see the, uh... How... ...music has evolved! Music and art has evolved to uh, - reflect society's values. - Yes. We gotta get with it, guys. We gotta WAP it up! I don't know, I feel like if I touched that, it would bite me. Brett: Even if it was tame, you know? Brett: I would be very nervous. I'm gonna watch this without my glasses, so I can't really see. Yeah, me too. I'll just... It's censored now. I mean, it's pretty catchy. I can see why it's very like, entertaining. And the imagery is very... - Very strong imagery. - Very strong imagery. Eddy: Powerful. Whoa! Hey, it's the same thing! They're both splitting. You have to be flexible to be a good musician. - I mean, you don't have to be like, - Yeah. - super flexible, but it helps to stretch. - Yeah. I feel very tense after watching that. Yeah. I mean... Tchaikovsky had a really big D major concerto. - Right? - Yeah. Like 45 minutes long. Yeah. I think D's a really good key. This is in D! I mean, it's ... I don't know what key. - So it's either B minor... - B minor. - Oh, that sounds really... - Or D major. - Nah, it's probably B minor. - That's true. Yeah. That's why it's called Cardi... B. - Get an education! - Cardi B minor! Cardi B minor! WAP it! Dude, it's like La Mer. - Yeah, wet. - Yeah, wet and cushy. It's like, *sings La Mer* Yeah. And they're like... Dude, I can see this as like, a ballet choreography. Yeah. It's like the modern-day ballet. "Wet and gushy." - But... "gushy" starts with a G. - Oh, "gushy." Wet and pushy. Wet and Debussy! (both) Wet Debussy! - Wet Debussy... - Wet De-bussy! Debussy wrote La Mer. - She knows! She knows La Mer. - She knows La Mer, yeah. - Cardi B, you know La Mer. - She definitely knows. That's what my teacher used to say. "From the top." I make a mistake. "From the top!" "Make it good." They also do a lot of like... The screen switching thing. It's very intense. It's like if you were about to go like... It's like a rapid string crossing. It feels a bit like that. Wow, you gotta see this. Nah, I'm good, hey. Oh, it's fading away now. It's a... coda. - Oh, yeah. - I love the coda. They gave the dancers a chance to, um... - ...show their talent. - Yeah. Well there you go! What did you think? I can see why it's like, popular, right? I thought it was interesting the uh, structure of the piece. I mean, song. Sorry. That, um... This bit. This catchy bit. Comes only once. You know, normally I would expect from songs that there's like, chorus that comes in - every now and then, right? - Mhmm. But it feels almost just like they're switching verses. It's like, first violin, second violin, - first violin, second violin. - And then the chorus. - That's it. - And they say WAP once. Like, "WAP, WAP, WAP." And it's done. I thought it was a interesting structure. 'Cause in classical music, usually the structure - will have more, kind of... returning subjects. - Mhmm. Within the melody it's less repetitive. - That's true. - Whereas here, I feel like every bar is so repetitive in terms of rhythm and harmony. But then the song kind of just goes through the materials once. The snake is there once, and done. The leopard. And then the tiger. Dude, Carnival of the WAP! Saint-Saëns would be like, "Whoa." - I think Mozart would've really liked this. - Mozart, yeah. I mean, he was really into butts, right? Oh, dude! He would be like, "Golden butts and fountain boobies?" Dude, I reckon if Mozart did his "Leck mich im Arsch" today... It would be like this. - The MV would be like... - Yeah. Yeah! The tongue would be out like what they were doing, right? Now Cardi B. B minor as well! - Dude, it's coming together! - Oh, dude! Alright, guys. Thanks for joining us in uh, classical musicians react. Let us know if you enjoy this type of content. You know what WAP really stands for? What? Watch who? Watch TwoSet Violin, and then go practice!
