hey spuddys potato mcwhiskey here and welcome to civilization 6 overexplained as per usual i am using a whole host of ui mods and i've also changed my ui scaling a little bit i i i changed i used to have a really really zoomed in ui so that people on mobile could read the game a little bit better but i think um i think i i've changed it slightly i've gone down a notch and you know if it's okay let me know if it's not let me know because i i can't always just go back to the 200 upscaling now today we're going to be doing a whole bunch of explaining which inevitably involves talking a little bit about how to set up your game so that you have success generally speaking i would recommend for a new player um any map is actually totally fine every single type of these maps has their own unique type of up and it looks gameplay we have picked up the lakes map each of these maps is going to have a different effect on your game for example archipelago is going to favor more naval base gameplay you're going to want to settle coastally built harbours all that sort of thing similar-ish to continents and continents and islands that's going to be kind of similar things like pangaea these are going to be much more land focused as will maybe island plates and continents inland sea very land-based map as is highlands so just keep that kind of stuff in mind but but today we're going to be playing on leagues my recommendation is if you're a new player play on small or tiny i would say small is fine for 99 of games you could also play on standard uh i would avoid playing on these larger larger sizes oftentimes a lot of really new players when they're coming into the game they're gonna play on these huge huge map slices which isn't necessarily the best thing for you to do and because this is aimed at new players i'm also going to be avoiding any of these extra modes just just for now maybe we'll do more games like that i would say you could actually leave all of this totally standard in fact it's probably better that you don't mess with these things and just leave them as our and the difficulty i would recommend is honestly for your very first game just pick settler and spend like half an hour playing and then start a new game and then try to try to play it all the way through on you know prince or lower so i'm going to leave everything completely standard i'm also going to completely randomize my sieve and just go ahead and get started all right looks like we managed to roll sweden on this very very first go i don't know if i'm going to play sweden but i definitely want to talk a little bit about settling we're going to spend a lot of time on this because it's kind of really important that you understand that the really big fundamentals here so i would say there's a few different things you really have to keep in mind when you're thinking about settling one of the most important things is opening up the settler lens on the menu over here and keeping an eye on these bright green tiles fresh water is arguably the most important thing to keep in mind if you can settle on fresh water you will get plus three housing in the cities that are settled on fresh water which you use your settler to do by using the found city button and that will mean that this city will be able to grow a lot more population before population growth restrictions set in so very very important that you find fresh water fresh water can be obtained from lakes and from settling beside rivers as well as potentially building an aqueduct to a mountain later on in the game you can also aqueduct two rivers on any fresh water source the most important question you have to ask yourself when you're starting your game is uh where am i gonna put my capital city and there's so many decisions that go into that but like i said fresh water is the very first one and then the the second one is like am i looking to get extra yields so when you actually settle your city the city works the tile underneath and it tries to conform the yield to two food one production so if the tile has zero production it'll add one production if the tile has zero food it'll add to food if the tile has more than two food it'll keep the two food and if it has more than one production it'll keep the one production and we can kind of show this off by stepping on over here to the salt you can see this plus one gold in particular is kind of interesting because that will actually be kept and this is just for example sake i will go ahead and settle the city and by settling on that city we now are automatically working that one food tile our one gold tiles underneath our city if we go to the citizen management screen you can see the city is always working the tile the city center is on and so we're getting five gold from buildings and one gold from work tiles that's because the palace which is always in your capital city gives you five gold but let's go ahead and roll another start location so we can keep talking a little bit about start locations i want to roll a few just so you get a better understanding of like the super super basics of like oh like intuitively what are good like things to look out for when we're settling so here is rome we're not going to talk about the sieve specific stuff right now and a great way to rate your start location is you want to look for how many forests you have so if i show you this you see these little trees that's a forest and then how many hills you have and it's an easy way to tell if a tile is a hill is if there's no little resource symbol on it and it has one production when you turn on yields that's in here you can also press the y button to turn on yields if it has if it has a production there's a good chance that it has a hill uh so for example these two sheep they spawned on hills i think this is actually a natural wonder by the way we spawned near crater lake which is kind of an interesting point obviously there are upsides and downsides to spawning near these mostly upsides really so if we're taking a look at the standing location it's important to remember that when we settle certain features disappear and specifically those are things called features so if we go into the cyclopedia up here in the top right and we type in features um well i guess actually that doesn't really explain it but basically there's like the base tile which is like grassland tundra tundra hill uh grassland hill all that sort of stuff and then there's features features typically disappear when you settle so you see this three food here remember i was talking about if you settle on a tile that has at least three food uh you'll keep that three food because this is a feature it will immediately get chopped and destroyed and the city will have only two food so is this a good starting location was that the right place to settle my city no i would have stepped one tile to the left in fact and the reason i would have stepped one tile to the left is because settling on the marsh doesn't get me anything useful we're stepping one tile to the left gets me access to a three food one gold tile which i can't work where i settled if you see here you're only allowed work tiles within your borders so i can only work put this one population i have in this city to work on any of these tiles and unfortunately it's out of range of this we have to wait for the borders to grow or spend money to expand our borders and borders grows by you generating culture which is actually pretty good for rome because rome has a special ability that allows them to get a monument but let's roll like two or maybe we'll roll like one or two more starts just so we can really hammer home some of these lessons now this in contrast to our last start location is a really really really good start location and it's for a number of reasons first of all the land quality here is much higher there's very little tundra i don't see any desert there's no tiles that have low quality generally speaking you want to look for tiles that have a lot of numbers on them and by that i mean like you see this this is two food and two production that's a great early standing tile two food one production eh it's okay three food wood production it's a fantastic tile you want to look for tiles that have two food plus some extra stuff so here's a tile with two food plus an extra food and production so this is like a great great great starting tile not only that but we're playing indonesia who gets extra plus two face to city centers that are adjacent to coaster lake tiles so if we move over here to one of these coastal tiles which is by the way on fresh water and settle we'll end up with a nice advantage now personally looking at this situation i would choose between settling on the sheep or on the stone both of them have their advantages and both of them have their disadvantages if i settle on the sheep i have a much weaker circle because if you imagine when you place a city here you can only work tiles adjacent to it and the tiles adjacent to this are relatively weak because i only have a two food one production or two food two production tile and a two food one production tile whereas if i were to settle here you could see the land quality is a little bit higher because i have access to four tiles with food and production whereas these coastal tiles are not very good off the bat so i would probably make the sacrifice to move to the stone i will lose one turn in my game but i would have a better capital for all of those various reasons now have i decided on whether or not i want to play guitar ja i don't think so but the reason you're looking for tiles with a good amount of food and production and i would argue that the earlier into the game that you can get access to food the better you want to work your high food tiles first unless you're producing something in the city of a really really high importance like for example if you are rushing a settlement to try and get a city location that will be hotly contested then you would maybe focus on instead of working this high food you would instead work on producing this a high production tile and the difference here like if i go ahead and get to work on a monument here you can see actually a wide variety of things here like let's say i worked the uh one food one goal tile here the city will grow in 15 turns and it'll build the monument in 20. let's say i worked this two food one production top the city will grow on eight turns and produce the monument at 15 turns let's say i work this tile the city will grow in five turns and produce the monuments in 15 turns let's say i work the two food two production tile the city will grow in eight turns and build the monument in 12 turns and you can see all of these various tiles have an influence on the tempo of the city and what you're looking for when you're settling is really good tiles because the better the tiles you have the higher your tempo will be anyway let's just roll one more game and then we'll we'll go with that one brilliant so we managed to roll the aztec empire and this is a really interesting interesting civilization because of all their bonuses that we'll talk about and specifically uh quite interesting on a lakes map because the civ 5 aztecs were amazing on lakes maps some important notes about the aztec is that they do start off with plus four era score because their starting warrior is their unique unit so you generally you want to be hunting for a golden age as the aztecs which has to do with earning error score we'll talk a little bit more about error score later on now looking at this start location it's actually a fantastic start location we have several viable tiles that we could settle upon we could for example settle upon this cattle which is currently my bias we could also settle in place because it is fresh water and we would have access to similar quality of tiles personally wow actually this is actually just such a really great start location we even have a reef and the important thing about a reef is that if you were to put a campus here that's a plus two campus not like incredible to get a plus two campus but still really really good and i'm thinking i might play for tempo here and if i settle on the cattle that gives me really good tempo the only problem is my only good production tile is this deer so i'm gonna go ahead and settle on the cattle and because cattle is a resource that gives you plus one food my city will start with plus three food which means we're growing 50 faster than a normal city that means if a normal city would take uh 30 turns to grow my city will take 20. so that's quite a big advantage so we want to make sure that we're always take you know making use of these bonuses we're also working a two food three production tile which is quite valuable giving us a healthy six production in the early game now i talked a little bit about that golden age being really really important for the aztecs so getting out two scouts can be really really important for the aztecs as well the earlier we get these out the better these will provide me with a lot of scouting information i'll be able to meet a lot of players i'll be able to meet a lot of city states which will in turn get the error score and maybe i can snag a golden age out of that and that's kind of what you want to do as the aztecs now our eagle warrior is really really strong but unfortunately it costs 65 production compared to a normal warrior which is 40 production so we kind of want to delay building those until we have the 50 production card with a dog and we want to find someone who we can get into an early war with and use the eagle warrior's special ability because it has a chance to capture other civilizations military units by turning them into builders and by turning those units into builders we can then come around and use the aztec legend of the five suns to spend those builders to actually produce districts which are an important mechanic now growth works quite simply the city has an amount of food that it needs to accumulate in order to grow a new population there's a you don't need to know the formula for how much food is required you just need to know how much food is required and right now it's 15. so that means because we're producing three foods surplus because we're producing five food three from the capital two from the deer tile and then our population is eating two of it we're slowly growing with a with a surplus of three there are modifiers for having a lot or not for having excess or not enough amenities and also just other growth modifiers or whether or not you have enough housing housing penalties start kicking in when you reach one population from your cap so at five population i'll take a 50 growth debuff which can be a little bit punishing so now uh the goal of our eagle warrior is to get scouting information and generally i would recommend scouting towards hills hills will provide you really good information so i noticed that there were mountains over here and i want to avoid walking into mountains with my eagle warrior so i'm gonna gonna go ahead and go a different direction in terms of opening technology there are various build orders that you can go for here but generally speaking your build order will revolve around getting one of these early wonders or districts so for example if you wanted to go for a religion you would go for holy sites if you want to go ahead and rush one of the great scientists because maybe it's a particularly good great scientist you might go campuses if you want to go for a super early war maybe you'll go encampments for example you may go preserves you may go theater squares all of these things are reasonable and viable options depending on how you want to open up your game now the first five technologies here also have incredible importance sailing if you spawn coastally and you have good fish resources that you want to improve you're probably going to want to build a builder straight from the start of the game and unlock sailing if you want to go for a religion it's almost required on the highest difficulty that you go immediately for holy site pottery animal husbandry and mining all kind of lead to later on abilities for example with mining you have the option to either go pyramids or encampments or iron to rush swordsmen so there's various other things you can go for my situation is currently i see the potential for camps here so an early builder would give me a good camp here and a good camp here because that's what ivory's improved with and being able to improve a luxury resource which you can tell by that purple part of this border uh icon will give me plus one combat strength on all of my units so that's quite powerful this will help me you know make my way through the early game now i think in terms of technology my current bias this game is to go for horses and the reason for that is i spawn near a whole bunch of flat grassland tiles so the probability that there are horses nearby is relatively high and i don't have any districts that can be crushed by the horses appearing because you can never get rid of horses and have them ruined the important thing about horses is they add one production and one food to the tile you can actually do that by searching in the civil the pdf plus one production plus one food so that would if if i do find horses it would significantly improve the quality of the land that i have and so that's the logic behind going for them nice we found some tundra that's really really good and we found a scout there we go there is the pearls that's another luxury resource that we can improve upon and you just generally you want to find out what's nearby that's what you're looking for i would recommend in almost every single game that you play go for two scouts two scouts is usually enough to like cover all of the nearby terrain and then you can bring your warrior back to make use actually i'm going to be able to get three scouts this game uh getting a free scout from a tribal village which is essentially like a a little goodie hut that you can step on to get some sort of bonus and sometimes you get a scout now this kind of puts me at a bit of a crossroads because i've already put another turn into a third scout whereas now that i have two scouts i could opt to save four turns shave four turns off something like a settler or a monument or something of that nature i think in this particular game i'm gonna go for more scouts because information is itself an incredibly important part of what you do when you play the game like for example there's a barbarian encampment there's another tribal village we're going to want to try to get access to both of those now in your game these tribal villages won't highlight they are highlighting for me because i have the more lenses mod which applies to scout lens you can see here let me go ahead and turn off the scout lens and so you can see in your game when you click on a scout the tile won't highlight that's why i recommend if you are going to play the game go ahead and use all of the ui mods that i have i should have it linked in the description of the video so this barb camp is important to keep note of we are going to want to clear it but i'm also looking for a city state early or potentially another player who i can get into an early war and i can see here just at the edge of the fog of war i have found another player and judging on the colours here i think it might be persia each player has like a distinct coloration that you can tell by looking at them there's another plus one population from that tribal village we're going to step here and we found korea so korea is actually an interesting person to find early since we want to go to war with korea i'm going to go ahead and not center a delegation i would recommend you send a delegation to almost everybody on the map that you meet it it does cost you 25 gold but it gives you a significant relationship benefit finding korea early is great because my aztec warriors these eagle warriors they're going to be able to fight her really really effectively and fire builders from her there we go we found animal husbandry and in fact look there were two horses nearby so this is even better tiles to add to my empire and we have naturally grown to the ivory over here to give us another two food two production tile with an extra one gold on it which is nice because that's a 20 increase in our gold income because the base gold income is five we've also managed to scout out a religious city state here you can tell by the white dashed line that is a religious city-state and we want to meet those city-states because they're worth error score and our scouts the goal of the scouts is to generate error score so we just found a natural border between continents and that actually brings up a really important point for the aztec every continent in the map if you go to the continent's lens mode will be named and every single one of these continents will have a maximum of four unique luxuries on it so the city the continent of laurasia has ivory it has tobacco and it'll have two more one of them is furs the other one i haven't quite yet figured out yet sea resources do not count it's only if it appears ah look it's gypsum so once i have access to gypsum ivory tobacco and furs that will be all of the potential luxuries here you know captured and improved now that's important for us because playing as the aztec we get plus one combat strength when attacking for every luxury resource we have improved so if we find another continent which we can find by going to the continent map mode and looking at the color here there's also a boost associated with it on some error score now we know that if we expand this way we can continue to increase our combat strength modifiers so i've unlocked animal husbandry which is going to give me access to some really important stuff and in fact it's so important to me that i get these online early although let me have a look at caps camps are worth plus two gold and plus 0.5 housing i think that early gold might give me really really strong tempo so i'm going to go ahead and pick up pottery and potentially also a head for irrigation i have to think a little bit about my military archers might be a natural follow-up here i don't think i have any choppable tiles so i think i'm more inclined to make sure that i'm working this tobacco to get a pantheon because if i could get the camp pantheon goddess of the hunt it would give me even even more value from these camps looks like we managed to find leventa leventa is a city-state city-states give you some benefit if you're the first person to meet them or if you put an envoy in them envoys are a mechanic we'll explain a little bit later but for now we're getting plus one faith from leventa from meeting them and if we manage to get enough envoys in them we'll get access to their special ability the colossal head which will give us a way to generate faith and tourism i could potentially steal a builder here by going to war with korea and i think that is actually worth doing because i do want to go to war with korea in the near future so always take an opportunity if you know that you're going to go to war with somebody try to steal something and get something out of a value out of them early into the war grabbing a builder with one charge on it that's just free value so we can see korea has a slinger and a warrior but my scout is relatively safe over here i have plenty of retreat angles it should not die it could potentially die which might hurt my ability to earn error score but i'm not too worried about it right now yeah as expected you took a little bit of damage so it's going to add and continue to scout ooh we got caught by another warrior that's unfortunate let's get to work on craftsmanship we're building a builder in order to boost it and every technology in the game with the exception of the very first few that you can unlock and then some of the extremely late game ones can be boosted by doing some sort of action in the game it gives you 40 of the culture cost of the technology or civic you can see here this civic costs 40 culture and if i can manage to improve three tiles i will get 40 of that culture as a reward towards this technology so you can tell that would be uh what on the order of 16 free culture which right now that's eight turns of my current culture per turn so you definitely want to be picking up these missions if you can by unlocking our very first civic code of laws we've actually activated our government and one of the things you have to do in the early game is make some decisions how are you going to go about promoting your units how are you going to go ahead and do this i really really really want the goddess of the hunt pantheon so i'm going to go ahead and plug in god king while i really do want the production from urban planning this faith right here would be a game changer i'm also going to go ahead and plug in discipline should my scouts run into andy barbarians i'm continuing a scouting pattern with my scouts i want to avoid getting caught by the enemy warriors and i also want to get information of korea cities there's our builder finished and we can start improving our territory now we would like to get craftsmanship if possible i'm going to go ahead and work on a settler so that i can forward settle korea and start pumping warriors at her to claim her build her units as builders this is a very advanced maneuver but it's it it doesn't always succeed but the important thing is that i'm showing you how to play your civilization to your civilization strengths so we just picked a pottery it'd probably be a good idea for me to pick up archers to be able to soften up enemy units thankfully korea is wasting her time building uh wonders which means she's not building a military so i should have no problem uh beating her in this war let's go ahead and place our first camp that's gonna add two gold to the tile as well as half a point of housing you can see here the city has zero 6.5 housing but the 0.5 doesn't show up until you actually get a fully rounded number so when i build the cap here on the ivory that number will go up and as you can see here this unit has 38 combos front when attacking this barb camp but once i improve the ivory it'll go up to 39. so i come in here and i place down the cap now it has an extra two gold and you can see here 39 combat strength on this warrior i'm thinking of clearing this cap because it is worth error score and i was hoping to get a golden age here i'm also going to go ahead and pick up goddess of the hunt this is a pantheon this is why you want to earn faith in the early game if you earn faith in the early game you can get pantheons pantheons are very very powerful they give you a new addition to your gameplay so for example plus one faith from tiles with breathtaking appeal tiles have an appeal rating which is based on how nice they are to be around mountains forests all these sort of things increase appeal like being coastal any tile in this map mode which by the way i'm using a modded map mode will be have plus one faith on them so there's a there's a lot of value there i could also take religious settlements here which would give me a second which would give me even another settler i'm kind of torn goddess of the hunt would be really really great here but if i took religious settlements i would be able to double settle in korea's face and start just spamming aztec eagle warriors at her my goal isn't to kill korea it's to kill her units and farm builders from her which i can then send back home to actually build my district i think while i like the double settler thing i think i'm gonna go ahead because my camps are so strong i'm gonna go ahead and take goddess of the hunt and this will add plus one food and plus one production to every single camp in my empire so you can see this tile here this is three food for production like i urge you look around the map and try to find a tile that is of that quality you will not find one this is one of the best tiles in the early game that you can find and i'm really really excited to add another camp to my empire right now so i can head over here and get this extra cap so the amount of production and food that i'm producing right now is insane we found another city state we found lahore lahore is a militaristic city-state which means they give you plus one production when producing units in your capital or in cities where the barracks are stable they also have a benefit where that allows you to spend faith to purchase a unit militaristic city states are some of the best ones to find in the early game because the plus one production actually applies to even civilian units like settlers and builders and the most important way that you acquire new land is using settlers and then improve that land is what build is so think of these as your two most important economic units in the game you're going to want to build a lot of these at least in the first 100 to 150 turns then your focus will be on actually improving the infrastructure of your city like getting campuses like getting encampments all that sort of stuff so yeah while the settler pantheon would have given me really really good tempo i think getting the camp pantheon goddess of the hunt also gives me really really good early game tempo we found another city state still trying to fish for all that error score a lot of stuff gives you error score in the early game in fact i'm pretty sure i have a mod that tracks all the score in the early game and here it is the error tracker i think it is so for example you can look down through this list and see if you've completed any of these like having a government if it has a timer mechanic here it's you know you can't do it all right well there's probably a better way to explain that basically it's time like it comes at a specific point in the game like you can't do it right now like i have to wait till the ancient era you get me let's clear this barb camp and hope that there's no korean unit nearby to ruin my day and clearing that barb camp was also worth error score although arguably i would have actually waited for the settler to come and clear this so that's what i'm going to do that's the beauty when you're learning the game don't be afraid to go back and just reload remember you're learning how to play so rather than clear this barb camp i'm going to go ahead and fortified next to it for a couple of turns there's the boost towards craftsmanship which means we're four turns away from being able to plug in the again card which will give us a 50 production towards our eagle warriors and that'll allow us to spam eagle warriors and our neighbor nice we found another tribal village getting us more boost in fact it was the boost for archery i've just gotten extremely lucky this game so far like getting two boost for text that i'm researching is like so incredibly powerful our settler is completed and generally you're going to want to send these escorted however i have really good vision of this area so i can tell where the enemy units are so i'm not too worried about sending it without protection always always always protect your settlers now i have a little bit of a choice here i could go ahead and pick up a monument or i could get like i could pick up all this stuff or i could start spamming eagle warriors i think i would like to start killing the korean units so as much as i would love a monument i think getting an eagle warrior or two out here is the correct play before i finish researching archery i'm actually going to go ahead and research something else i'm one turn away from this technology and this is a really important place to be because it means if i choose i can research this in a single turn at any point in the future it's really really important to be able to do this and i'll explain why later on when we build a couple of slingers let's improve these horses right now because this will not only give us a little bit of error score from improving a strategic resource it'll also allow us to potentially build horsemen later on after we unlock archers and do our slinger timing all right brilliant we have access to craftsmanship so we can go in here we can go ahead and get rid of god king plug in urban planning for plus one production in two cities and then plug in a gog for a 50 production boost towards ancient area units that's the policy that i want and we can finish it right there i'm going to step this settler forward one tile and then settle it here because i want this city to be within three tiles of this barbarian encampment if a barbarian encampment is within three tiles of your city's borders you'll get extra error score for clearing it and you can see here we got three error score oh it's it's six tiles so it must have been just out of range one two three four five six yeah i was just at a range of my capital i kind of forgot how the mechanic works but if a barbarian encampment is six tiles away from your city you will get an error score boost and now we're at 16 out of 25 error score which is a pretty good place to be i really really really really really want a golden age because it would potentially open up so much a classical era golden age is so incredibly powerful that it's hard to really state and theoretically i can get a little bit more error score by putting this extra envoy that i just picked up from a tribal village into lahore boom there it is now i got plus two era score i'm at 19 to 25 i'd eat seven more era score that's going to be pretty tough to pick up one way i can get that error score is by unlocking sailing and building a galley because you get some error score from building galleys the very first galley that you build will give you a little bit of error score i'm going to go ahead and get to work on state workforce so i can get access to a governor as well governors are an important source of early points as well in malinalco i'm gonna go ahead and work the three food tile the city doesn't have the most amazing tiles ever so if i can get the city to grow a little bit faster it will work these production tiles a little bit quicker our second eagle warrior is ready to head to the front line nice we met the ottomans it's a pleasure to meet you and generally speaking it's relatively safe to share information with their capital unless it's like the very first civilization you meet and you meet them on like turn two or three then you might want to keep information on capitals away from them we've met another city state i'm continuing to try to meet city-states and i'm also looking for envoy quests like for example ascending trade routes or building districts if these are easy missions for me to complete i will be looking to do them a delegation from poland is really really nice and it looks like a city-state declared war on me it was ancient now i have three eagle warriors and i'm going to go ahead and get two slingers to assist and just keep in mind all the while all this kind of stuff is happening i'm making sure that i'm continuing to scout with my scouts so that i can find city states city states are one of the most important things that you can find in the early game because they literally change the course of your game they make such a huge difference in what you're able to achieve there's the first korean unit we could theoretically kill unfortunately this archer got the drop on me so i'm gonna have to retreat this is why it's usually a good idea to wait until all your units are in the same place before you try to be aggressive i'm gonna go ahead and live with that mistake but it's important to uh to be ready for it now that i have two slingers completed i'm gonna go ahead and finish archery actually i will wait till this third slinger is finished before i do it and since this isn't the conquest war i don't want to over commit unless i think that i could actually kill korea and take her out of the game which i probably can't considering she's making 26 signs per turn which means she's very rapidly going to be able to unlock better units unless i can get onto and step on her campuses here what i can do now is start to crank out settlers behind this attack which i'm going to be using as a gambit to try and generate builders remember this whole the whole goal of this attack is for me to get more builders using the aztec special abilities in terms of positioning i'm playing it very carefully i'm positioning my units in defensive terrain in order to try and bait the the koreans into attacking me and giving me efficient trades i'll go ahead and take the battle cry promotion here on my warriors because it's the best general purpose there's a wasp in my room oh okay like i was saying before i was assaulted by an insect who is still in my room buzzing around being incredibly annoying i'm positioning conservatives here because i want the aztecs to get their units low so i can attack them for the kill you can't steal builders on a a defensive kill you have to actually be the aggressor there's access to sailing an era score is so important to me even though this galley will never ever leave this lake i'm going to go ahead and build a galley this era only has 10 to 25 turns left so it's incredibly important that i get this although i think i could finish the settler first all right time to upgrade our archers let's go ahead and pick up archery and then in the city of malinalko i'll get to work on a monument monuments are incredibly important they are literally the most cost effective building in the entire game if you're not building monuments you're making a mistake granary of questionable value but always be building monuments let's go ahead and take out this warrior for the chance of getting a builder and we did in fact get a builder this is a three charge builder okay to talk about that in terms of value this would have cost me 54 production but now i have a military unit and a builder and i can continue to pressure korea my goal here is to try and bait korean units out into the open so that i can attack them with both of my eagle warriors and do massive damage and also potentially follow up with archers which is why i'm now going to be upgrading what all this gold i got from building these camps three archers and the reason we go for three archers is because three archers is the boost for machinery which will give me access to mid game crossbowmen i don't need this boost right now but it's a good one to pick up at some point in the game now i need to think about what's my transition out of the current state of the game that's probably going to have something to do with getting a government plaza and settling a whole bunch of cities there is plenty of land around me even though i don't have it fully scouted there's plenty of places that i could be settling cities and more city cities is generally considered a strong move up the 22 out of 25 era scores were on the cusp of getting a golden age i think it's time that we started planning some of our districts our empire isn't amazing but we do have some reasonable locations for certain pieces of infrastructure for example over here uh we're on rivers which generally kind of points in a bit of a commercial home direction commercial hubs are relatively good they give you access to gold and trade routes and that can allow you to develop your empire in a really efficient way i would recommend commercial hubs be one of the very first districts that you get in most of your empires either that or harbors because of how valuable those trade routes are commercial hubs uh if you're using the detailed map tax mod by the way you can actually place ma tax on the map and see what sort of value you can get from your things using adjacency bonus districts in this game are basically extensions to your city city centre that are specialized around producing a specific resource for example science districts campuses are dedicated to generating sites campuses are dedicating to generating gold so you're going to want to focus on that pretty it's pretty important that you understand these mechanics and make use of them one of the less understood and less used ones is the government plaza which is kind of like a one-off district that gives you access to some special abilities but the nice thing is anything placed next to a government plaza gets bonus adjacency so maybe we place our commercial hubs next to the government plaza for the extra adjacency in fact there's actually a really good campus in here in fact there's two really good campuses in here a plus four campus as well as a plus three campus this kind of suggests the direction that my game might go if you can get really good adjacency on your districts that's usually a good direction to head with your empire i can get really good gold and really good science adjacency which is kind of pushing me to go for gold in science which means maybe i should go for one of the victory conditions that relies on gold and science that's sort of more long-term strategic planning though isn't super important until probably the classical era now it's generally considered unsafe to send your settlers out into the fog of war uncontested or unprotected however in this situation i'm feeling pretty strong and i'm fairly safe to send it at least to the left of my empire i don't see any hostile powers of barbarian encampments that would cause me trouble over there and we have some pretty good river here that we want to settle remember we want to look for fresh water as well as high yield tiles and especially because we have the camp pantheon we want to look for camps and there's an ivory tile right there so i think it would be pretty good if i were able to settle near that ivory i also want to think about what i'm actually going to build in these districts in terms of infrastructure like am i going to go for commercial hubs am i going to go for campuses maybe an industrial zone i have to think about all of these things when i'm settling these cities so far based on my location probably going some sort of commercial hub and campus build seems to be the direction that my empire is pointing in so i'm going to place down some pity city pins where i think i should settle my cities well i think this is a pretty reasonable one down here it has access to a one food two production tile which means it's a high production city uh which also has a nice tobacco here with high production relatively low on food but that's not a big deal the city itself will be quite good 10 turns left on this era so i'm going to go ahead and get this galley out i could theoretically also go for the temple of artemis here and i really would like to go for the temple of artemis and in fact getting the temple of artemis might actually change what i do with my build getting an early wonder can mean you go for early theater squares in any way in any case i'll make that decision after i get to galleys although actually maybe i don't have to hard build my galley maybe i can cancel this galley by doing this and then use the quick deals mod which will allow me to judge the ai's disposition towards me from a trading perspective and maybe i can purchase a galley galleys do cost 260 gold to purchase which means i would have to have 260 gold i can get to 250 right now and i think that might be enough because in one turn i'll have 260 goals so i can buy the galley and i'm avoiding settling on the coastline this is something to keep in mind for if you ever play multiplayer generally in single player it's not a big deal to settle coastally but i'm going for an inland empire this game and now because i have the gold to purchase that galley that means that opens up maybe getting a temple of artemis here the question is where am i going to put my government plaza where am i going to put the temple of artemis i do have 10 turns until the next era so i could probably safely buy a single tile in order to make this work i think i'm going to go ahead and buy this tile right here it opens up potentially a decent theater square beside my thing and i'll still get enough gold before the end of this era to buy the galley for the error score that i need we're going to be doing an advanced aggressive maneuver here korea hasn't been sending their units towards me to fight me for a while so i'm going to go ahead and start fighting them of my own volition sometimes you have to be aggressive in order to get what you want and what i want is to kill their units so that i can turn them into builders nice we picked up state workforce which is giving me access to core v conscription and the government plaza let's go ahead and step up here and do a little bit of pillaging and start shooting the city and the reason we're shooting the city is because we want her to panic the ai when it starts seeing the city health go down turn over turn they'll begin to panic and want to give you gold in order to end the war if i go here and say hey give me money she'll give me seven gold but as i put more and more pressure on her cities she'll start to panic more and more and be willing to offer me more and more in exchange with the completion of state workforce in the civic tree we've gained access to two really important things our first governor charge which allows us to pick a governor as well as access to the government plaza the government plaza is an important district that i've talked about but haven't really explained and i'm going to go ahead and do that in the next episode but for now i do want to talk about the governors each of these governors is relatively viable in the early game i would go ahead and say that magnus and pingala are generally the two strongest in the early game however amani is quite strong as is liang the other ones are kind of situational and you probably don't ever want to go reina as your first governor i don't think there's ever a situation in which reina is your first governor every other one of these guys i can think of a situation in which you go them first pingala generally is the person you go first if you want to go ahead and make culture and science some multiplayer modifications to the game actually change this and make pingala entirely science focused so keep that in mind in this situation i think it would be perfectly viable to either go for pingala or magnus i'm kind of leaning towards pingala because he will give me the science and culture i need to to get ahead and stay ahead in the early game so let's go ahead and grab pingala and put him into the capital part of the reason i'm going for pingala as well is pingala scales off of having really high population cities and i have really high population in this city already by this stage in the game you probably shouldn't have five population in your city this is kind of exceptional because i have so much food and the city will continue to grow especially if i get the temple of artemis which will add even more food and housing to this city so with all of that being kept in mind i'm going for pingawa because his secondary abilities which you have to invest it further in will give you culture and science based on the number of people he's invested into and since i'm also going for commercial hubs very early into this game i'm not going to have very much science and culture from anything other than population because every single population point in your game that you grow will give you a small trickle of gold science and culture sorry normally i would consider bee-lining towards political philosophy because this will give me access to three new government types that will be a significant upgrade to the government that i currently have the current one i have only has two cards available whereas every single one of these has four cards available i'm going to go ahead and get to work in military tradition and that's because it'll give me flanking and support combat bonuses to all my units and i've already got it boosted and i'm in the middle of a war so i feel like i need anything that will give me a military advantage my archer has taken a beating so i'm going to go ahead and retreat him and i can't kill this warrior across the river so i'm going to go ahead and step away to try to bait him across the river and then i can kill him with this warrior i'm also going to go ahead and pillage this campus right here because pillaging enemy infrastructure will not only hurt them it gives me the benefit in this case i'm going to get 36 signs here which is about six turns worth of signs for me which basically means i can research a technology in one turn a couple of times which is pretty darn valuable let's let's continue doing damage to the city in order to allow the pressure to mount on korea and hopefully for her to respond with more units i'm also going to go ahead and build a quarry you always want to build at least one quarry in your game while quarries aren't the best tile in the entire game it is nice to build one because it will give you the boost towards masonry which can unlock some important things down the line time to settle my third city and specifically i chose this location because i don't want to be on the coastline and this is a plane's hill tile that's relatively close to my capital so it's not too far away into this low quality tundra land i will eventually want to settle the tundra specifically just for the furs but for now this is a totally reasonable city it's next to a strong tile it's on a strong tile and it grows to relatively good tiles and has access to potentially good districts like for example a commercial hub and a campus of at least plus two plus two is a pretty reasonable level but i would say that you probably want to get at least plus two uh where you can and like in all of my brand brand new settled cities i will work on a monument monuments again just so so important that you get that culture up in the early game now we have access to writing so we can place our campuses if we wish i'm not going to go ahead and do that just yet but i am looking for a kill on this warrior i'm going to go ahead and step on this warrior with my eagle warrior in order to generate potentially a builder i didn't roll the builder that time but that's okay it's only a percentage chance that you get a builder it's not a guarantee and it looks like my temple of artemis was stolen away from me that's a little bit unfortunate however i did delay my temple of artemis by quite a bit in order to go on the aggressive uh aggression which is fine um so i guess now is the time to talk about the government plaza the government plaza is a plan is a district you can only build once and it has some unique properties namely the buildings inside the government plaza cannot be bought but bought with gold almost every building in the game can be bought with gold with the exception of the buildings inside the government plaza and that's because they are so powerful the government plaza will give your trade routes bonus yields as well as access to these really really powerful buildings you get access to the warlord's throne as well as the audience chamber and the ancestral hall you can only build one of these the ancestral hall is the one that we want to build because that'll give me a 50 production boost towards settlers in this city there's more unique mechanics with the government plaza but i'm going to go ahead and i would like to buy another tile but i don't think i can afford to do that without spending a little bit of horses to somebody simon bolivar will give me 140 to 43 gold from this and it's important to note that normally the trading screen will look like this for you and your games but i'm using a mod to make it simpler but that extra choke of gold will allow me to go ahead and buy the tile that i wanted to put my government plaza on and then i'll go ahead and place my government plaza on that tile and boom i'll have it in one turn one of the other things that the government plaza does is it gives you plus one governor title and increases the adjacency of all districts next to it so pretty important to get this up early if you can let's go ahead and buy that galley before i forget boom there's the galley that's plus two error score and now i just need one error score in the next six turns in order to get a golden age and i have just picked up a tribal village which gave me plus one envoy so we are now set for a golden age so we're going to go ahead and try this around this city in order to put it under siege putting it under siege will make the ai more fearful of us and in order to put it under siege every single tile that is around the city needs to be under zone of control however zona control does not project across a river so i have to step this guy across the river and then boom the city is now under siege these are just important distinctions that you're going to want to keep in mind as a player and we can start to do a little bit more damage to the city and actually put it under threat and in fact i may actually be able to take and keep this city it all depends on the loyalty pressure in fact i could probably have killed korea if i had fully committed to this war let's put that theory to the test however i am going to make a save file because this is a fork this is a fork in the road this isn't actually what i want to do but i'm going to go ahead and do it to show you that you can theoretically if you have the right bonuses take on a weak ai like korea in the early game however there is a ticking time bomb on this war she will eventually get a crossbowman which means all aggression will be halted because i can't deal with crossbowmen but that's going to cover the very first part of this series i love you all very much and i'll see you guys next time bye [Music] you
