hey spuddy's potential whiskey here and welcome to the civilization 6 overexplained aztec game and now we're going to be on the war fork basically what i'm saying is i'm going to show you theoretically why this war won't work if i were to continue it and what we're trying to do here is to just get a little bit of short-term value now we just completed our government plaza in our capital city which has given us an extra governor title so let's go ahead and promote pangala with culture generally speaking you want to go for culture first the reason for that is pretty simple getting access to political philosophy is a really important milestone for your empire you can see here i was making 3.6 culture per turn but once pingala is established in two turns that should go up significantly by five to six culture the second reason you go for culture first is that there are more governor titles in the culture tree available so by picking culture first we will actually get to researcher faster and it's overall just more efficient i would generally say you want to get culture in the early game over science we've met a whole bunch of people on the map here and we've kind of slightly overshot our uh need for a golden age here but that's okay as long as you don't super overshoot it you'll be fine there is an argument to be made though for me to just camp out with all of my scouts right now and wait until i'm ready to meet the last person on the map to pick up a little bit of extra error score i do have a spare envoy and it's probably a good time to talk a little bit about envoys and why they're so important so fundamentally in civilization vi there is this concept of building a wide empire and what a wide empire is a city an empire with a lot of cities that's basically it that's the whole concept is your empire should have a lot of cities now i probably made a mistake putting connoisseur into bingala i probably should have picked up victor because he will give me eight loyalty per turn in the city that i intend on conquering but that's neither here nor there but but the concept of wyatt here is uh you build a lot of cities and with a lot of cities if you can imagine let's say we take for example the campus district inside the campus we can get all of this science bonus let's say we get two science from each campus from adjacency okay uh that means if we have 10 cities we're getting 20 signs and then inside the campus you can build a library and that's another two sides so now we're getting 40 signs if we double the amount of cities that we have we double the amount of science that we can generate now it does cost a lot to build those settlers but you can see the more citizens you have the more your infrastructure scales now the really important thing about city states is that they apply on top of that you can see here anshan for example gives me plus one science in the capital city and in every library building so then that example from earlier where we're getting 20 signs from libraries would go up to getting 30 signs per libraries which means more cities gets you more yields so so that's why you want to get a lot of cities in your game and that's why city states are so important is because they scale off the size of your empire in terms of city state that i would like to build a relationship with i think that uh muscat is a reasonably good city state to start building a relationship with i intend to build commercial hubs relatively early into the game and you can kind of match the color of the district with the color of the city-state muscat is a yellow city-state which means they'll give me gold from my my uh my commercial hubs you see here plus two gold in the capital and in every market of lighthouse building and i'm already making a pretty penny here at about eight gold per turn which has now jumped up to ten so seems like a pretty reasonable thing to do so that's the logic behind why city states are important and why i go for that let's start putting more and more pressure on the city we are taking damage and you can see here now she's offering me eight gold per turn for 30 turns for peace so she's getting a little bit more desperate that she might lose this war let's go ahead and plunder this trade route and that'll give me an extra 60 gold now i'm wondering can i actually kill this city i don't think i can kill the city this turn maybe if i double shot it with archers on top of an attack yeah let's go ahead and attack the city twice i would like the 40 signs push but i think i'm just going to kill the city so now the city is flipping in uh four turns back to korea but we don't mind that we're going to go ahead and keep the city and now it'll be going in six turns so we have a garrisoned unit which gives us five loyalty and there's a little bit of citizen pressure and but the fact that we have grievances here is a bit of a problem uh this is why i was saying earlier on in the episode i shouldn't have used my second governor title on pingala because now i'm gonna have to reassign pingala to this newly conquered city in order to get its loyalty down to a more reasonable level but here's the thing we don't necessarily want this city so we might be like hey give me all of your resources and you can have your city back we are kind of in the driver's seat right now we can give this city back if we choose let's soften up this spearmint so we can kill it with our warrior and maybe snag a builder yoink ah there we go perfect we got our free builder and we're in pretty good shape now i want korea to keep coming at me because again my goal here isn't to take and hold this city my goal is to kill her units to turn them into builders and send them back to actually build my own infrastructure so a couple of people are a little bit angry that i'm in a golden age but that's not a big deal so we have in fact achieved a golden age which will allow us to make a dedication dedications are really really important part of the ages mechanic because depending on the dedication that we choose we'll change the outcome of this error we could for example go for free inquiry which would be quite good for getting science early or we could take bren bush and voice for the plus one culture for each specialty district that we build and we could also take money mentality if we thought we had enough faith in order to be able to get builders really efficiently and settlers really efficiently with faith or we could take exodus evangelists if we already have a religion and we intend to spread it or if we'd like to pick one up if we take a look at the great person screen surprisingly very few people have gone for a religion this game in fact there's only one religion on the map theoretically we could go for a holy site here but i would consider that to be like a pre-turn 50 like move and so it would be a little bit late to go for a religion now personally considering our focus on getting commercial hubs up i think free inquiry is a reasonable choice and in fact it's so reasonable a choice i'm already working on getting currency let's go ahead and get a trader in our second city we want to trade it to be able to boost uh currency so what we'll do is we'll go ahead and go to our quick deals now remember if you don't have this you'll have you'll have to do it manually but i could sell off like 10 horses for like 36 gold and then go ahead and come in here and get my trader and i'll send that trader to the city to boost currency next turn and it'll all be happy days now i'm continuing to produce eagle warriors not because this is a good decision but because i want to show you why you don't want to over invest in an ancient era war that you didn't go all in in already let's go ahead and try to steal another builder and it didn't quite work remember it is rng whether or not you'll actually get those builders and you can see here now chariots have start to come out and eagle warriors while they are good they don't really hold a candle to chariots especially because the ai on the highest difficulty level gets a plus four combat strength on the offense and defense so we're gonna have a little bit of a struggle here to try and fight them off probably about time that we should maybe consider looking for peace here and i think this is a pretty reasonable place to stop off i've only built another two eagle warriors which is a totally reasonable number of extra eagle warriors i've opened up potentially settling to the south of korea and i've taken a city off of her which will slow her down i might be able to get another pillage off though so i'm going to go ahead and keep this war going for another turn or two and i'm also going to go ahead and build the monument to my capital because we're long overdue on getting monuments but it is important too if you spawn next to korea you should attack her early korea is one of those civilizations in the game that kind of is necessary to do damage to in order to keep the game from getting out of control she has a lot of power and um it's very very easy for her to snowball into a position where it's really hard to deal with her so now i have access to a trader in malinelco because i purchased it last turn i could sell send it to leventa to pick up three gold per turn but i would rather send it to my capital for two food two production and the reason that it's two food two production in my capital is because i built the government plaza the government plaza is one of the two districts sorry three districts that gives trade routes that are sent internally inside your empire plus one food and plus one production the city center naturally gives you plus one food and plus one production then the government plaza gives you plus one food and plus one production and then finally the um diplomatic quarter over here will also give you plus one food plus one production which can give you a baseline plus three food plus three production most other districts either give you food or production like the commercial hub gives production anyway i'm gonna send it to the capitol to help grow this city because i want my cities to grow what i have right now is temple i've managed to capture a city i've captured a bunch of builders and i have relatively good control of my local area so i need to capitalize on that tempo in order to get a really strong game let's go ahead and keep on pillaging korean tiles in order to get our own advantage here you know like there's no risk to us being at war right now so we should stay at war it's all just reward at least as it currently stands let's go ahead and buy this horse tile and improve it because it's another plus three food two production tile in my capital which makes my capital arguably one of the strongest capitals i've actually ever had in the history of playing civ i don't think i care about faith so i don't want my city to automatically work this faith tile so i'm going to go ahead and tell the city by clicking twice on this little symbol that it should avoid working faith where possible now that has a monument and a has basic infrastructure up i want to be able to place down the uh commercial hub so i'm going to put one turn into a builder but then i'm going to put the commercial hub down i also want to put down the commercial hub in tenochtitlan because it's a six turn build for a plus four uh commercial hub uh you can see here it's getting two from the river one from having two adjacent districts and then another one from having a government plaza so that's gonna be plus four gold and plus four signs and the science is coming from the dedication that i made uh the uh free inquiry dedication so it's all kind of working out really well for me right here that early boost of science will be really really useful i haven't quite decided what i plan to do with this stone tile but i'm kind of tempted to put a district here because if i put a district here i will get another plus one on this thing and there are like some pretty interesting options here maybe i could put an industrial zone here because it'll get an extra plus one adjacency from being adjacent to the stone and it'll get a plus one adjacency from having two districts beside it and if i were to put an aqueduct right here it would actually be a plus four adjacency industrial zone which is quite powerful the only problem is this industrial zone would miss hitting sempoella however if i were to put the industrial zone one tile down and then move the commercial hub one tile up it would be a slightly worse industrial zone but at least the aoe production that it provides later on in the game would be spread around i think i'm more willing to get myself a plus three commercial hub now rather than a plus two so i'll go ahead and stick with the current plan i'm going to go ahead and get to work on mathematics because i would like access to my diplomatic quarter it's pretty important to get this relatively early into the game you don't have to rush it but early is good to get and i already have a campus as well as a government plaza so once i finish this commercial hub i should get this technology boosted unfortunately these barbs down here have decided to make themselves a nuisance so i will have to pull back these two aztec warriors and so i've decided not to fully commit to this attack because i know it won't work long term it's simply just too difficult to really get a successful attack in the ancient era let's go ahead and take the important governor victor here and put him into the city of gwanju so i can finally put pingala into a city that matters like my capital let's try to kill this warrior in order to pick up a builder and we did in fact get a free builder so all things are working out quite well here in fact i'm getting a huge advantage from being able to continue this war this is why people tend to fear korea because of her extremely high stats but she often fails to build a military because what happens to korea is she gets too much science and not enough production and by getting too much science her units become too expensive for her to actually build them like she's probably building knights right now looking at the city of simpuala which has just finished its monument the city needs an upgrade and one of the things you can do in the game is swap tiles between cities the city isn't growing very fast so i'm going to go ahead and give it a horse tile from the capital that will make my capital weaker but it will make this city stronger and sometimes that's the trade-off you want to make your empire stands as one so it's important to think about how your currently established cities can help your newly established cities now in the city of saint-paula i would really like to get both a commercial hub and a um campus and i think the positioning on this is like this i could put the commercial hub over here and that would be a pretty reasonable choice but by placing my districts in a triangle with the city center i'll get plus one adjacency on them and overall that's a slightly better plus that leaves this land over here to eventually become a farm triangle uh farm triangles are a concept that will be introduced into the mid game or rather will be introduced in the mid game when we unlock feudalism feudalism will give your farms plus one food for every two adjacent farm so instead of getting plus one food from these farms it'll be plus two that's important because if you think about every single tile in the game it takes two food to work a tile right because every citizen in your city that works a tile eats two food so if you put a farm on a tile and you're only getting plus one food back that's not a very good return on investment whereas if you get plus two food back that's literally twice as good that's why we want to time our feudalism push with getting six farms in our empire somewhere ideally on three adjacent flatland tiles in fact i'm pretty sure my capital would also really like a farm triangle i would make the argument that every city should have at least one farm triangle if you can manage it it's not the most important thing to do but if you follow that rule of thumb you will have really strong cities in terms of growth at least i think the general rule of thumb is improve your basic resources early then look for farm triangles and otherwise improve things for more production so let's get to work on the commercial hub in the city of sempowalla while we can get a lot of science from these campuses don't forget right now our commercial hubs are giving us science as well so that's what we want to focus on guangzhou is also needing to grow a lot so i'm going to go ahead and emphasize growing on food you can click on tiles by the way to lock them in and i'm going to emphasize growing on food even though we have a lot of negative food growth modifiers from the loyalty and stuff like that i need this city to grow in order to solidify its loyalty because loyalty is based on the number of units or number of population in the city the city also has a really good farm triangle in fact it has a farm bow tie which is when you have two farm triangles that intersect like so you can see it kind of makes a bow tie shape you know or an infinity symbol if you see here and then these farms will be plus two and this farm in the middle will be plus three on top of a bonus resource as well which theoretically could scale off of getting a water mill water mills are a bonus uh building that will give you plus one food from your bonus resources so theoretically this could be like a what a seven food tile the seven food i don't think i need to tell you is a lot of food from one single tile and what i'll probably do is settle a city over here so these cities can share these tiles now if i really wanted to kill korea here i probably would have beelined horses but again i don't want to actually kill korea i'm happy to just take value from her this is an important thing for you to know by the way because the barbarian is standing on my commercial hub i can't actually build the commercial obviously i can't actually click on it this district is occupied by an enemy so that's an important thing to keep in mind if you do ever want to stop your enemy from building a wonder or a district you could just stand on top of it a whole bunch of people just declared war on me probably because i've been so aggressive it's not that big of a deal though because congo is really far away from me as is grand colombia so these people probably won't be able to do much to me in terms of damage and i think it's about time that we signed a peace deal with korea her army is getting bigger and scarier by the second let's go ahead and make peace and she should be willing to give me gold looks like i didn't threaten a second city enough but i will get a city out of this and considering what i invested and the amount of builders and cities that i got out of this this was a pretty good war for me because now i have a whole bunch of units to defend myself with from any potential aggression as well as a free city and a bunch of other things working in my favor so taking a look at our current situation i'm pretty happy with how things have turned out i would say this was a successful aztec early game we managed to nail a golden age we have our economy up and running and pretty soon we're going to have political philosophy and we're going to be able to start spamming settlers generally speaking a good rule of thumb is to be on about one city per 10 turns of the game depending on the amount of land that there is unless you're doing some sort of challenge with like a low city run that would be a benchmark that i would consider not necessarily sacrosanct but something in that region like you did that that's like the benchmark you know it's a pretty good benchmark as well let's go ahead and position two arches in the city of gwanju in case korea ever decides to come and try and take it back and otherwise we're free now to continue to develop our empire and build up our food income in particular i want to build up the food income in guangzhou so i can go ahead and place down a commercial hub unfortunately because of korea's unique mechanics the placement of this campus isn't very good it's only a plus one but it will eventually become a plus two when i place this commercial hub right there and this will be a plus three commercial hub i'll be able to place that in about four turns when the city grows and it cracks out another builder now we've just unlocked one of the really really important early game civics and that's political philosophy this gives us access to a trio of really important governments autocracy oligarchy and classical republic each of these has their own particular play style and importance in the game for example classical republic is really good if you're going for a lot of cities with a lot of districts because all cities with a district get plus one housing and plus one amenity as well as a 15 boost in great people points autography is a little bit weird it's kind of a tall build where if you're playing with less cities and you plan to get your government quarter out nice and early it can be really really powerful and if you want to build some wonders oligarchy is more of an aggressive government i personally tend to lean towards autocracy because it has the military card policy slot which can be really really valuable in case you need to plug one in oligarchy is quite good though for any sort of early aggression because it makes your units stronger and gives your units more experience more experience means they unlock more promotions and when units promote they get stronger generally speaking in some sort of specific way i kind of glossed over it earlier but i have actually earned a few promotions on these units for example my archers now do an extra 5 combat strength damage or they have an extra prize combat strength when attacking land units and similarly my warriors have the battlecry promotion which gives them plus seven combat strength against melee and ranged units now it's important to know that melee and range units doesn't mean units that are melee and ranged it means a specific class of unit every unit in the game has a class specifically a promotion class so you can see here the archer has the promotion class ranged so this battle cry promotion will apply on the offense and defense against archers i know a lot of this is going to be pretty obvious for people who've watched my channel for a while but i figure it's pretty good to cover the basics over and over and over again because there's always somebody new watching the video who doesn't understand exactly why i'm doing a specific thing nice and because our first commercial hub or rather this was our first commercial hub but an adjacency of four or higher we actually got three errors score out of it which is pretty damn nice now if we check out this error score we're picking up a four gold per turn but because we're in that uh unique uh dedication we're also getting four signs from that commercial hub so these commercial hubs are extremely valuable now when you actually build your commercial up it's really important that you get your market asap markets have really powerful buildings because they give you a little bit of gold and a great merchant point per turn but the really important part of the market is the fact that it gives you plus one trade route capacity now if we go back to the trade route that we have currently that's two food three production i could theoretically get two food three production in every single one of my cities that i build a market and put a trader in so those extra traders are essentially like adding another tile like for example uh it's like adding another horse tile except imagine if it was two food three production that's really really powerful and these internal trade routes will only get stronger as the game goes on our next goal to use our military is to try to secure places that we want to settle our cities and we also need to start deciding upon where we want to settle our cities now i do want to get my markets up first but let's go ahead and actually choose our government in this particular game i'm going to go ahead and go for classical republic because the extra amenities will be really useful all of these are actually valid choices but let's take classical republic i'm going to go ahead and plug in colonization as well as ilcum this will give me a little bit of production in every city as well as a boost towards settlers and builders i'm also going to plug in charismatic leaders so i can get a little bit of influence towards city-states influences up here in the top of the ui you get a certain amount per turn depending on the government that you're in you could see here a classical republic gains three influence per turn and at 100 points they gain one envoy and by adding that card to my government i'm now getting five points per turn which significantly speeds up the rate at which i'll get envoys if i come down to monarchy here you can see here it gains five influence per turn and gets two envoys at 150 points so the amount of envoys you get throughout the game will go up just keep that in mind roughly how they work let's finally go ahead and unlock mathematics like we had planned because we did actually manage to build three specialty districts and then i'm going to pick up one of the most important techs in the game and that's apprenticeship apprenticeship is so important because it has the ability to give your minds plus one production and the boost is only to build three mines so it should be relatively easy for me with all these builder charges i have running around to get access to it now i've managed to defend this commercial hub over here so i'm going to go ahead and get to work on it and i want to actually use my builders here to build it similarly over here in malin alco i don't really have tiles that i need to improve right now most of my cities have fully improved tiles or i don't have the technology to improve their tiles so ideally i would look for a minor two which i don't exactly have right now so i'm gonna go ahead and just spend builder charges which is the aztec unique ability in order to build my commercial hubs faster the faster i get my commercial hubs the faster i get my uh trade routes the faster i get my trade routes the faster my cities grow now once you have political philosophy i would say 99 of your games you're going to want to go to feudalism so that you can get access to builders and also the second that you get political philosophy you're probably going to want to cancel whatever you were doing in the city that has your government plaza and get the work of the one of these three things for example audience chamber ancestral hall or warlord's throne my plan is to mass expand this game so i'm going to go for ancestral hall it'll take nine turns but then i'll be able to produce settlers 50 faster in this particular city guangzhou finished a builder let's go ahead and get the farm triangle down boom and we got a little bit of extra error score because this tile had been flooded and improved by the flood which is something that can happen in the game uh now that the city is for population we're going to get to work on a commercial hub again remember commercial hubs commercial hubs commercial hubs we want to get as many commercial hubs out as possible as fast as possible in this particular era pop in another build charge here and now this commercial hub is only two turns away from finishing very nice unfortunately i waited a little bit too long to deal with this barb camp and now it's popping out swordsman not to worry aztek eagle warriors with the battlecry promotion can stand toe to toe with with swordsmen as long as they're on the defense so you just have to be a little bit careful by how you do things i probably need to get an archer down there and probably should have brought archer down there already my eagle warrior managed to pick up a promotion on the defense again when you first level up a unit you have a choice between battlecry and tortoise specifically melee units in my opinion 99 of the time battlecry is better however if you have no intention of ever attacking with this unit tortoise can't be good because it gives them a better defense against all ranged attacks i like battlecry because it allows me to occasionally punch above their weight when they're going on the offense like right here with all my luxury bonuses and the flanking bonuses i'm actually able to out dps this swordsman on the offense here now we can go ahead and snatch up this swordsman with the kill and then grab this barb cap in order to clear it and gain the error score i'm not gunning for another golden age often times in my opinion when you're playing on deity it can be hard to get a classical error golden age and a medieval era golden age so you probably want to push for one or the other and so your play is going to evolve depending on which one you decide to go for nice we have the market in manila manila that's like an impossible city to pronounce i would love to place my campus right now and i'm gonna go ahead and do that by doing this this is a plus three campus that will eventually become plus four but for now i'm gonna go ahead and build the market now the reason that i placed the campus as you can see down here cost 117 the price of your district increases over the course of the game as you research more of the technology but if you place down the district the price won't increase for that specific district so this campus will always be 117 production no matter how far into the game i go however a place district doesn't it like takes away a tile from your city and it doesn't actually give you much so you do have to be a little bit careful about when you do that i am going to need a granary in this city soon because it's reaching its limit on growth one turn from now it's food positive factor it's going to go down by half and i probably also would like to pick up lumber mills sooner rather than later which means i want to pick up wheels to be able to pick up water mills the reason i want water mills is so that i can boost construction and the reason i want construction is so i can build liver mills and the reason i want to build lumber mills is because i don't have a lot of hills and i'm going to be relying on lumber mills for production this game generally you'll find either a city being heavy on woods or lumber mills or being heavy on mines or lumber mills so if you have a lot of hills you can probably build more mines that if you have a lot of woods and no hills you can build a lot of mines however if you have hills and woods you can chop and then build mines which is like the best of both worlds so apparently i was spotted in the fog of war by a scout and a barbarian horde of horsemen has decided to come knocking on my door don't worry about this this is the civilization vi in action the ai barbarian swarms for some reason have an incredibly high bias to come attack players it's really annoying so just get used to dealing with it there we go we have access to water mills so we are going to want to build a water mill in one of my river cities pretty soon alternatively if i can sell a resource why is it why does it look like this i have two ivory so i guess i do have spare ivory for some reason it's not showing up in the ui nobody wants to buy my ivory which is kind of sad i decided to buy another hill tile down here so i can place a third mine and get apprenticeship boosted it's really really important that you pick up the easy boost if you can because they they actually offer you so much science because my science isn't very high right now if you compared to the ais so i need to catch up through any means necessary or just possible another trick here in this particular situation that you can use is if your unit is surrounded and dying uh you can fortify and then click the unit and cancel the fortify and promote and now the unit both heals from the promotion and is fortified just like a cute little tip that not a lot of people know about so i have access to my ancestral hall in my capital and i would really like to place down my campus in here so i can lock the price in but i don't quite have enough gold i'm wondering if maybe somebody could buy a few of my horses unfortunately it looks like i'm at war with the majority of players in the game so maybe they'll be willing to go to peace oh my god he wants so much money for me why i haven't done anything to him the ai is a little bit erratic sometimes especially warmonger ai like simon bolivar so just keep that in mind but yeah i'm gonna go ahead and get to work on the market because that plus one trade route capacity is incredibly important the earlier i get it the better i don't really have anything here that would significantly help me this game if i were to actually spend my own voice so often times it's a good idea to just save your own voice for later until you have a better opportunity i also have another governor title and i'm going to go ahead and put that into pingua so i can get plus one science per turn per population in the city now if i come back to 10 octane you can see it's making 11 science per turn and i refresh it and it's up to 20. so it is a significant amount of science if you can get a really good city going with it important to note now i have yet another governor title and there's a few choices here that i could work on i could either take amani if i wanted to try to take control of a city state i could take magnus if i felt like maybe doing some chopping and settling stuff or i could take liang if i want really efficient builders i feel like liang is a pretty good choice here efficient builder charges is quite good for a single governor title so i'll go ahead and put her into simple walla and get another mine in here boosting apprenticeship leaving me two turns from getting another plus one production on these mines i'm gonna make sure that i'm focusing on working tiles that have slightly higher food than this tobacco tile i do need to start thinking about potentially coming back and picking up irrigation so i'm going to go ahead and one turn that technology because there's a lot of plantations around my empire that i haven't improved and irrigation gives me the technology for plantations i'm going to want more builders soon however i think i'll probably just crack out one builder at some point in order to get the feudalism boost i already have one two three farms i just need another three so potentially how much would a builder cost here i think i'm gonna get a builder in sempoala before uh our gempowalla i don't even know how it's pronounced after this commercial hub so i can go ahead and place down a few of these farms and get the boost for feudalism and then get the plus two builder card action a builder charge card rather nice there's apprenticeship we have access to workshops industrial zones mounted arms and possible production from mines so you can see these mine tiles are a much more healthy two food three production tile as opposed to being a two food two production tile which is roughly comparable to horses uh these will get stronger and now mines are going to be the main source of production from my empire so we're kind of hitting the beginning of the mid game once you have things like apprenticeship and you have things like feudalism brilliant there's bronze working which will give back me access to the iron resource as well as access to the barracks and encampment did actually manage to find an iron tile and iron is quite useful because it gives you plus one sides on the tile quite handy we found another science over here on the city of guangzhou so this city of gwangju has actually settled on the iron and even though we only just discovered the iron we're now getting that plus one sides per turn which is quite handy we're also now accumulating the iron resource which of course we can sell to the ai if they lack it you can see here the ottomans are willing to give me three gold per turn for six iron let's get to work on the mill in gwanju this city has a rice resource and that'll give me calls to delay construction i'll go ahead and pick up iron working or something like that to delay it sometimes it is worth it to to delay technologies if you think you can get a boost for it we've just finished the market in our capital let's go ahead and place our campus down and while it isn't the greatest campus that's ever lived it is a pretty good plus three campus and that'll be good enough for me now with the completion of a commercial hope on a government plaza i think it's time that we got to work on our settlers and we're going to be building nothing but settlers in the city for quite a while which is a bit unfortunate because it's going to start knocking down the population every time you build a settler your city lose the population however the upside of that is this city has really really good food so it'll grow back that population relatively quickly the downside of that too is pingala will not generate as much culture and science as i'm losing population but that's okay the other upside is the city that's at its housing cap so it's already kind of some of this food is going to waste so maybe building settlers is the best thing we could do in the city right now nice we've got the granary finished in saint paula i had already invested into it pretty heavily well i don't need the housing i'd already invested into it and that's i thought it would be okay to finish it let's go ahead and get the work on the market we want to build up our gold economy we're making a healthy 40 gold per turn and we want that to continue to grow because remember gold can be used to basically accelerate your economy think of gold as production that can move between cities if there's something you need right now you can get it with gold also think of gold as a way of sustaining a military if we decide to go to war later on in the game we're going to be able to afford a really huge army and be able to do some pre-building and purchasing like we did with the arches in the previous episode where we built a bunch of slingers and then upgraded them into archers this is like a really efficient way to do things for a couple of reasons because if we take a look at a unit right let's take a look at the swordsman the swordsman costs uh 90 production okay whereas the next unit the mounted arms that costs like 160 so this is nearly like 50 or more more than 50 more expensive for the mounted arms but like to upgrade from a swordsman to a man at arms it's only like a hundred gold so if you can get a if you build a bunch of swordsmen and then the turn that you research apprenticeship you spend like 400 gold upgrading swordsmen now you've got like man at arms on the turn that they were available ahead of anybody else ready to go to war so that's why timing pushes with gold and production are really really important you have to like make things sing in concert together you know civilization vi is a beautiful dance where everything is about timing about figuring out when should i get this and unfortunately it's one of those games where if you miss even just one single timing like if i had missed that golden age my timings would be off for the rest of the game i quite like this tundra city i rarely do i like a tundra city because they typically have really really bad tiles but this particular one is quite good i would potentially have to kill a cheap tile which i don't like can i maybe move the city into a friendlier position i think i'm gonna go ahead and accept that the sheep tile needs to die in exchange for a plus three campus and a plus three commercial hub and you're probably noticing potato you're building all the same kind of district in all the same kind of cities and yeah that's generally a good idea to follow since my win condition is something gold and science related building the districts that give me golden sides is what i should do when i'm ready to go to war i'll start putting down encampments when i decide to go for a science victory proper maybe i'll put down another type of district like industrial zones so it's just important that we understand where and why and what we're focusing on and uh we're you know it's just i i don't even know how to explain it further than that it's just like we're doing things for particular reasons and it's because they feed into each other in a really natural way gold and science are really really flexible yields and we've got our first great merchant marcus lycenius crassus also this is a ui mod that changes the regular portraits into a sort of quasi real world equivalent i'll make a pickup market marcus lycenius this will allow me to expand my border tiles now marcus has three charges so if there's a particular tile that i think is important like let's say i wanted this tile away from korea i could go ahead and buy it with him otherwise i'm not too fussed about tiles right now i guess i could send it down to the new city um that's probably what it's best paired with is a new city in order to grab like a couple of really nice early tiles for that city nice we finished the water mill in guanju which means we can now research construction to get lumber mills and we need a couple of lumber mills over here oh god there's scouts why is there always scouts there's always scouts man but i'm gonna go ahead and get to work on the market in here i want that market for the extra trader and since we're gonna finish the boost for feudalism we can stop researching it because he can fill the rest of this bar by achieving that mission instead we should probably plan for what our second government would be merchant republic is quite good for gold generation on the production of districts so this is good if you're going to try to sim city your way to victory simcity is where you don't go for aggression you basically play an inward facing game you're building a lot of districts you're trying to get a lot of gold you're trying to get a lot of production and you're trying to get a lot of builders this is kind of the direction that i'm wondering if we should go as the aztecs divine right is kind of a little bit of a mixture it's good for defense and it's also good for culture diplomatic victories and just generally it's just generally good these days but definitely more of a defensive tall diplomatic culture government and then a theocracy is more of a religious slash aggressive slash what's the word i'm looking for it's like religious aggressive faith purchasy type of thing and faith isn't necessarily religious stuff it's kind of there are things so i think this game we're gonna head for merchant republic i think monarchy isn't the move i think merchant republic is and then maybe we'll do a fascism push so let's go ahead and finish the farm and boom that will uh finish feudalism for us giving us access to the two charge builders two extra charges on our builders as well as better farm improvements now i'm not getting the benefit of those better farms right now but i will in the near future when i start spamming out builders out of this city so by the way you can see here this campus is now costing 160 production just to put that in perspective the campus i placed quite a while ago is still costing me 117. always be pre-placing your districts if possible it saves you production this is why players who are more decisive and have a good gold income are able to place their districts down earlier and will generally out-compete weaker slower less decisive players now i could potentially be heading for a dark age here which is a little bit unfortunate if i do it's not that big of a deal and now that i'm cranking out settlers it's probably about time that i started making decisions about where those settlers are going i know i have one city over here that i can do but perhaps there's at least two cities along this river delta and in fact i think there is i reckon i could settle here or perhaps do i want to move this way slightly i think perhaps i'll move slightly further away to get a slightly better campus yeah plus three campus here that'll eventually become plus four with this commercial hub this is like perfect for my game plan what do i want to do with this city over here perhaps i'll settle the city right there yeah this looks pretty reasonable to me there's good farmland in here that these two cities can share even if it will flood let's do it like this i think i'll put the campus here and then the market here and both of them will be plus two and plus three which is the most amazing districts ever but it's pretty good now let's go ahead and plug in serfdom from now on all builders trained from my empire will have an extra to builder actions and just to put that into perspective so you can understand how important that is normally a builder will have three charges my builders will have another plus two and because i'm building it in the city with liang it'll have another plus one so i'll be getting builders with twice as many build charges for the same amount of production normally right now don't forget that the cost of a builder goes up the more builders you build um but right now it would have cost me something in the region of uh i don't know with a 22 production per pail charge but now i'm getting uh six build charges for the same so it's only costing me 11 production per bill charge this is like an extremely efficient time for me to be building builders and i will be building builders and this is sort of a build that i generally go for in a lot of my games i'll go ancestral hall some sort of early game build or play like for example i'll go for a religion maybe and then i'll go for a government plaza with ancestral hall and then another city set up to build builders so this city makes the settlers and this city makes the builders and by doing both of those i developed my empire incredibly quickly so it's around turner 80 typically it starts happening around turn 100 but this is where my empire is going to explode if you were able to look at a graph of how powerful my empire is it would look relatively flat until this point and then it would go ever more vertical for the rest of the game which is the entire goal we're going to be playing a very explosive game here but that's going to be it for the rest of the episode or rest but that's going to be it for this episode i love you all very much and i'll see you guys next time bye-bye [Music] you
