[Music] welcome to sunday massive children today we celebrate the first sunday of lunch that means today is the fifth day of lent ash wednesday marks the beginning of the period of lent that's right did you see everyone on wednesday walking around with ashes in the form of a cross on their foreheads these were marked by the priest during the mass ashman's day starts lent by focusing our hearts on repentance and prayer repentance is when we recognize we are sinners and we accept god's invitation to turn away from sin there's more to ashman wait wait before we go on let's start with a prayer okay in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen dear heavenly father as we enter the lenten season we confess our sins to you because without your mercy and grace we will beat us please be close to us and give us strength to overcome our temptations thank you for the ashes on our foreheads that help remind us that although we are dust our bodies and spirits can be renewed in you in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit [Music] of the living god spirit of the living god we only want to hear your voice we're hanging on everyone spirit of the living god spirit of the living god we want to know you more and more cause when you speak when you move when you do what only you can do it changes us it changes what we see and what do we see when you come in the room when you do what only you can do it changes us it changes what do we see and what we see [Music] changing everything [Music] [Music] else can wait spirit of the living god spirit of the living god come now and breathe upon our hearts come now [Music] it changes what do we see [Music] it changes what we see [Music] it changes what we see [Music] changing everything spirit of the living god spirit of the living god we only want to hear look at these fantastic artworks you shared with us on little faith steps thank you for sharing your talents with us and putting a smile on our faces with these beautiful creations keep them coming [Music] how much do you know about ash wednesday why don't we play a short game we'll ask only two questions and you can try to guess the right answers you have five seconds for each question try to beat the clock okay let's go where do the ashes on ash wednesday come from are they from one burned palms from the previous palm sunday two burnt pumps that each parish grows three burnt dust collected from around the parish [Music] did you get that right on palm sundays we are given palm branches just like when people laid their palm branches on jesus's path when he entered jerusalem in triumph these palms are later burnt and become the ashes for ash wednesday how do you fast on ash wednesday is it one no meals at all in the day or two one full meal only or is it three one full meal and just two smaller meals [Music] that's right we fast on ash wednesday and we also abstain from eating meat fasting isn't just about not eating fasting is a spiritual discipline it means that we are training ourselves to do without so that we can learn just how much we depend on god so we can draw closer to god did you get both questions right well done [Music] i'll catch you soon or later um what am i looking at right now oh hi jerry this is a bottle of dust that there's not hundreds of other questions i have well let me explain the other day during ash wednesday mars i heard father say from dust you came and to dash you shall return so you got me wondering how i like are we um i think you're taking it a bit too literally the dust or ash on past wednesday it's more to remind us that one day we won't have our physical bodies anymore what would happen yeah and just like we would have our physical bodies we also won't be taking all our physical things into heaven wait so i don't get to take any of my things into heaven yeah what about all the stuff toys i want from the claw machine at the mall sorry joy i'm afraid they're not going with you but i've already spent so much money to get them i practically play it every week well maybe try not to next week and spend your money on something more important instead jesus helps us when we attempt it [Music] jesus went into the wilderness when nature was wild and untouched he was there for 40 days while he was there the devil came to tempt him but jesus showed great self-control the devil showed him all the kingdoms of the world and all the wonderful things in them [Music] he said if you bow down and worship me i will give you all these things but jesus refused and said get away from me scriptures say you must worship the lord your god serve only him so the devil left him then some angels came to jesus and helped him jesus is kindness goodness love patience and self-control he can help us when we attempt it we can pray to be more like jesus in every way including self-control look what i got you oh wow i heard this game is really really good thanks joy but why did you get this from me all of a sudden oh well i was at the mall standing in front of the club machine going must not play and then i saw that game on sale i don't remember what you said about spending money and things that last my stuffed toys won't be with me in heaven but you will so i want to do something to make you happy wow that's really thoughtful of you joy and i'm impressed by how you managed to overcome that temptation of playing the club machine but i'm afraid i won't be playing this at least for the next four weeks why not see i'm abstaining from video games fallen abstaining what's that and that's a story for another week grace why the long face because land is so long it's 40 days jesus also spent 40 days wandering in the desert fasting praying and resisting temptations you know the word lent comes from old english that means lengthen the figures the lantern season is an opportunity for us to fast pray and give of ourselves to help others it's one of the best ways to grow closer to god so just like jesus we can use lent as the time to prepare ourselves for the celebration of christ's death and resurrection at easter but what if we face temptations too we don't have to be afraid because jesus has shown us how we can resist temptation by knowing god's word and drawing strength from god that's comforting jesus was able to overcome the temptations because he chose to depend on god the father and not on others or things like power or possessions if we depend on our heavenly father we can get through anything like 40 days of lent yes oh [Music] i okay you jesus deep down in my heart talk about deep deep down down deep down in my heart [Music] i deep down in my heart [Music] deep down in my [Music] heart in my heart [Music] deep [Music] down in my heart [Music] saint catherine drexel of philadelphia in the u.s is known for many things she was in heiress to a banking fortune and she was fierce in standing up for the poor saint catherine was also the founders of the american religious order sisters of the blessed sacrament these nuns ministered to the needs of the poor african-american children and native american children you see since katherine drexel was the daughter of an investment backer inheriting millions of dollars which she gave away she used some of the money to finance missions for native american communities because she was shocked at how badly they were treated in america all her life saying catherine dedicated herself to serving those in need even when she had a heart attack at the age of 77 that didn't stop her in her ministry work she continued for another 19 years dying only at the age of 96. saint catherine is the patron saint of racial justice and philanthropist it is now time to set up your alter table and prepare for holy mass take a moment now to get these items and see you in a while oh don't forget to take a photo and post it on facebook or instagram with the hashtag catholicmars at home let us now listen to what auntie stella has to share with us in one last minute you'll notice that mastering lent is shorter than usual we've put away the joyful songs of praise the gloria and the alleluia to show that this is a solemn season of preparing for jesus's death and resurrection but why did these things happen to jesus he chose to die on the cross to take away the sins of the world so we could be reunited with our father in heaven he rose again on the third day to show us that he has conquered death forever the bible readings of lent tell us the story of how god created us to be with him but we chose to turn away and do bad but because god loves us he comes to us again and again to rebuild our broken friendship you'll hear the adventures of noah of abraham and moses we call this story salvation history it's a story that is still unfolding today with you and me in it and we know how it ends with a happily ever after because jesus died and rose again to make it possible thank you stella let us now settle down sit in front of your outer table take a moment to be silent and prepare for holy mass welcome my brothers and sisters in christ to the holy mastered children thank you for joining us to sing songs of praise and learn more about how overcoming temptation during lent leads us closer to jesus there's nothing like giving god our hearts and our voices to worship him as our loving father let us now worship the lord together on the first sunday of lent 6 march 2022 we offer up this mass for all the children of god this lenten season that we may take this time to reflect on aspects of our lives that are drawing us away from the lord and have the strength to give them up to grow closer to christ join us in singing the processional hymn [Music] is [Music] said [Music] graciously [Music] [Laughter] [Music] and through these [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the grace of our lord jesus christ and the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all and with your spirit and your friends at home today as we celebrate the first sunday in the season of lent it's a special season a season of grace of god's special friendship this friendship is so deep that we can acknowledge how selfish we've been how imperfect we have been or we are and yet god continues to show us his steadfast and secure love for us and because of this we can tell him all the things that we are sorry for and to know that his love his grace his friendship is always with us and so we have this confidence to pray i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i've done and in what i failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our lord may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life [Music] christ have mercy [Music] cries have mercy lord have mercy [Music] lord [Music] let us pray grant almighty god through the yearly observances of holy lent that we may grow in understanding of the riches hidden in christ and by worthy conduct pursue their effects through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of deuteronomy the creed of the chosen people moses said to the people the priest shall take the pania from your hand and lay it before the altar of the lord your god then in the sight of the lord your god you must make this pronouncement my father was a wandering aramaian he went down into egypt to find refuge few in numbers but there he became a nation great mighty and strong the egyptians ill-treated us they gave us no peace and inflicted harsh slavery on us but we called on the lord the god of our fathers the lord heard our voice and saw our misery our toe and oppression and the lord brought us out of egypt mighty hand an outstretched arm with great terror and with signs and wonders he brought us here and gave us this land a land where milk and honey flow here then i bring the first fruits of the given produce of the soil that you the lord has given me you must then lay them before the lord your god the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] be with me your lord in my distress [Music] [Music] he who dwells in the shelter off the most high and abides in the shed of the almighty says to the lord my refuge my stronghold my god in whom i trust be with me [Music] upon you no evil shall fall no plague approach where you dwell for you as he commanded his angels to keep you in all your ways be with me [Music] shall bear you upon their hands lest you strike your foot against a stone young lion and the dragon [Music] his love he set on me so i will rescue him protect him for he knows my name [Music] when he calls i shall answer i am with you i will save him in distress and give him glory be with me my distress [Music] reading from a letter to the romans the creed of the christian scripture says the word that is the faith we proclaim is very near to you it is on your lips and in your heart if your lips confess that jesus is lord and if you believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead then you will be saved by believing from the heart you are righteous by confessing with your lips you are saved when scripture says those who believe in him will have no cause for shame it makes no distinction between jew and greek all belong to the same lord who is rich enough however many ask his help for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord thanks be to [Music] god praise to you christ king of eternal glory man does not live comes from the mouth of god praise to you o christ king of eternal glory the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you o lord filled with the holy spirit jesus left the jordan and was led by the spirit to the wilderness being tempted there by the devil for 40 days during that time he ate nothing and at the end he was hungry then the devil said to him if you are the son of god tell this stone to turn into a loaf but jesus replied scripture says man does not live on bread alone then leading him to a height the devil showed him in a moment of time all the kingdoms of the world and said to him i will give you all this power and the glory of these kingdoms for it has been committed to me and i give it to anyone i choose worship me then and it shall all be yours but jesus answered him scripture says you must worship the lord your god and serve him alone then he led him to jerusalem and made him stand on the parapet of the temple if you are the son of god he said to him throw yourself down from here for scripture says he will put his angels in charge of you to guard you and again they will hold you up on their hands in case you hurt your foot against a stone but jesus answered him it has been said you must not put the lord your god to the test having exhausted all these ways of tempting him the devil left him to return at the appointed time the gospel of the lord thanks to you lord jesus christ now where is my good friend you know who my good friend is right let's see he's normally hiding in my sleeve but no is he my cup push no francis where are you ah hiding from me again oh don't disturb me okay something is wrong with the guy today what is happening well okay i think it's very emotional today um what's happening oh dear poor thing francis speak to us you see the children are all waiting for you hello right you're not very very right today even though there's a smile on your face [Music] well i was working out and i am aching all over oh okay so you've been to the gym i've been carrying weights yes and i tried to do this fasting thing and it's leaving me very very hungry and i'm getting angrier and angrier oh so you're suffering from being hangry you know angry when you're angry when you're hungry i think some of us suffer from that sometimes so what is this working out thing well you know i have to keep fit i have to be healthy i have to be strong so i went to the gym like everybody does don't you well kinda yeah and it's leaving me aching but you still do it right yeah because it makes me feel strong and healthy and alive right so children i don't know how many of you work out but some of you are too young so don't carry weights dangerous but as you can see francis is doing this fit thing and so why did you start doing this i've never heard of you going to the gym before well for lent i want to be healthy and happy and strong good and i also decide to fast because i have a little tummy i can't see your little tummy oh really okay my fasting works right so what's your point i want to know something okay does fasting build muscle does fasting build muscle yeah yeah so that i know that when i fast i can build muscle right i think fasting get rid of fat but to build muscle i think you need to eat like protein like you need like chicken and eggs and things that are good for you to build your muscle why would you ask this question because i had an insight right you frequently have insights this boy really sometimes is very very open to the working of the holy spirit yeah you know muscle is not just our bodily muscles but our spiritual muscle yay we all have spiritual muscle spiritual muscle i've never heard of a spiritual muscle before yeah when we flex our spiritual muscles we can become more joyful we'll become more tolerant we're more forgiving that is spiritual muscle wow that is quite interesting so spiritual muscle is something that we train and sometimes it's very difficult to train and sometimes leave us exhausted and we have to exert a lot of strength to work this spiritual muscle but when we are spiritually strong alive and healthy that means that we can love a little bit more especially those that we find very irritating uh we can be a little bit more kind a bit more gentle yeah and fasting helps fasting helps well explain well you know that fasting is about training yes so that we don't give into our bodily cravings or pleasures that's true and jesus in the gospel says that man does not live on bread alone but on the word of god really yeah and so if we can tell our bodies when we are hungry that we will not eat yes food is good for us but it's a training that's right so that when we fast when we can say no to certain things even though we need those things like food we can say that we don't need to eat so much or if we particularly like a particular food and craving like french fries or waffles or fried chicken then we can train our wills right and to say okay for the love of god for the sake of my spiritual muscle i will not eat this now i am stronger than my bodily cravings that's right and then then what when we're angry when we're hangry yes when we are very hungry and we're very angry and if our parents or our siblings get irritating we will not shout at them or say unkind words that's very good that means we're fasting even from angry words we don't have to become angry birds right we can ever actually fast keep away from things that hurt others we can become more life-giving wow that is so brilliant francis i know right so when i was working out i was also working out my soul that is very good so you pray while you're working out yeah because i have god with me always and that's very very interesting the second thing that jesus said in the gospel according to look what does it say you must worship the lord your god and serve him alone so even when i am making my body strong i am serving god that is very good and which means that we don't worship other idols or other gods like needing always to be first in class needing always to be right that we cannot stand to be corrected that we cannot sense that our parents are loving our siblings more that we can must be the best loved one um things like that so sometimes in life we want to get power we want to get glory we want to get a name we want to get like superiority yeah we want so many things not just material things we also want things that make us feel that we are worthy and loved and that's right so what makes us feel worthy and loved god that's right here's all the answers only god can make us feel worthy and feel loved and feel belong i belong to god and god belongs to me that's very good but some people don't really trust god really that's right sometimes when we are having very difficult times especially during times of sickness when we have some difficulties maybe um emotionally we're not so well sometimes in school or at work we're also not doing that great then we begin to wonder god do you really really love us yeah that happens doesn't it and it's really tough it really really is tough and that's why the responsible sound is very comforting let's look at the responsible sum together be with me a lot in my distress that's right we ask god to be with us in our distress because who do we need even more in times of distress when we feel empty and we feel worthless useless but god makes us always feel worthy that we feel loved no matter what he's the one that will fill us and to help us to walk step by step every day yeah god alone is enough we trust god that's right and so dear friends at home during this lent if we're beginning to always feel that in our lives we're never satisfied we're never truly happy and they were restless and trying to look for things to fill up our lives whether it is our bodies or our souls our emotions i think lent is a time to come back to god come back to god god is our only hope and home and i think we come back to empty our hearts so that we can fill it with god and god alone because jesus is our only lord meaning our only master and we serve jesus alone and he's also our only savior that means our help comes from jesus alone we don't need to depend on other things to save us or to help us or to make us feel worthy and so during this time of lent my dear friends even in distress in disaster and difficulty and especially in distress in disaster and difficulty let us now trust only jesus he is saving and healing word and also his works of love his works of care for me trust in jesus and all will be well dear friends saint paul in the second reading reminds us that if we believe with all our heart that jesus is lord then we will be saved and so joining with christians of all ages let us believe in our hearts what we profess in our faith i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things liberal and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consequential with the father through him all things were made for us man and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became men for our sin he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and he rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolate church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the day and the life of the world to come amen in the season of lent we enter upon a path of deeper conversion embracing a spirit of self-denial we pray the response is lord in your mercy hear our prayer for our religious leaders pope francis archbishop william goh all priests and clergy we pray that they may always stay true to their calling and fruitful to their work of leading the faithful and drawing all they meet to embrace the gospel message we pray to the lord lord in your mercy hear our prayer we pray for active participation and the grace of openness towards one another so that the cenotal process as initiated by pope francis may renew our commitment to walk with one another towards the vision of god for his church in singapore pray to the lord lord in your mercy hear our prayer for leaders of every nation we pray that all political initiatives may be at the service of human brotherhood rather than partisan interests we pray to the lord lord in your mercy hear our prayer for the church we pray that this land the church will bear effective witness to the gospel message of god's love to those around us we pray to the lord lord in your mercy hear our prayer for victims of war and unrest especially in ukraine and throughout the world we pray that peace and gentleness surround them and that they may seek refuge in your gentle loving arms we pray to the lord lord in your mercy hear our prayer let us take a moment for our personal intentions and the intentions of our family and friends who have asked for our prayers we pray to the lord lord in your mercy hear our prayer god of glory and power you sent your son jesus christ to live among us and show us the way to live grant us the wisdom and courage like your son jesus to turn to you in prayerful confidence when the forces of sin and destruction threaten our peace and the peace of those around us this we ask in the name of jesus our lord [Music] oh [Music] is [Music] these are [Music] this bread is this was [Music] pray sisters and brothers that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church give us the right dispositions oh lord we pray to make these offerings for with them we celebrate the beginning of this venerable and sacred time through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god is right it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord by abstaining 40 long days from earthly food he consecrated through his fast the pattern of our lenten observance and by overturning all the snares of the ancient serpent taught us to cast out the leaven of malice so that celebrating worthily the paschal mystery we might pass over at last to the eternal paschal feast and so with the company of angels and saints we sing the hymn of your praise as without end we acclaim [Music] please [Music] is [Music] [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of our holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time as betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] the mystery of faith save us savior of the world for by your cross and resurrection you have set us free therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and william our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles with saint francis saint claire and blessed allegra and all the saints who pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever amen [Music] at the savior's command and former divine teaching we dare to say [Music] our father [Music] i will be [Music] as we forgive those who trespass against us [Music] deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ [Music] lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever amen the peace of the lord be with you always and with your spirits of each other the sign of peace [Music] of the lord [Music] [Music] the sins of the [Music] is [Music] behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word in my soul shall be healed [Music] [Music] dear friends during this time of spiritual communion remember that man does not live on bread alone but we live on the bread of life our lord jesus and we continue to depend and to trust in our lord jesus and whichever areas of our life at this very moment we still can't let go and to let god we ask for his grace during this sacred moment this sacred season of lent to begin this journey of letting go of releasing that hardened heart and to allow the lord's hand healing hand to soften our hearts for him we invite all those watching to make an act of spiritual communion with a spirit of gratefulness thanking god for us infinite love and sacrifice with humble and contrite hearts let us express our desire to invite jesus into our souls my jesus i believe that you are present in the most holy sacrament i love you above all things and i desire to receive you into my soul since i cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally come at least spiritually into my heart i embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself only to you never permit me to be separated from you amen [Music] oh jesus i [Music] my master and my friend i shall not fear the battle if thou art by my god [Music] i [Music] my [Music] but jesus draws on your [Music] let us pray renew now with heavenly bread by which faith is nourished hope increased and charity strengthened we pray o lord that we may learn to hunger for christ the true and living bread and strive to live by every word which proceeds from your mouth through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit bow down for the blessing me bountiful blessing o lord we pray come down upon your people that hope may grow in tribulation virtue be strengthened in temptation and eternal redemption be assured through christ our lord amen and may almighty god bless you the father and the son and the holy spirit amen go in peace glorifying the lord by your life thanks be to god i will say [Music] who died for me [Music] yes [Music] who died for me [Music] i was lost [Music] raise me up and just [Music] is [Music] see [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Applause] [Music] sisters and brothers in christ remember jesus said i am the bread of life i invite you to take the word bread and let it give you life so be begin the day with your beloved as you wake up after you've done your routine maybe just before breakfast or maybe just after breakfast sit down say a short prank and then we have our routinely read the word of god pick up the bible read for five minutes sometimes we say i read the bible i'm very difficult okay start with the simple ones what are the simple ones the gospels the stories about jesus i'm sure as you read the stories of jesus the things that he had done and the things that he had said are not so difficult what's the next word e every day [Music] even as you pray affirm someone start with the ones that are closest to you now tell me something are you really saying there's nothing good in the one that you call beloved and you know after three days you think to yourself i can't think of anything else you know nothing else to think about never mind repeat the same things at least they know you know that your spouse knows that you always think that she is thoughtful a is attend to the eucharist attentively you know sometimes on sunday because it is recorded you say i will watch it later sisters and brothers you are not going to get anything if you watch because the eucharist while it's there it's empty of you you are not there try and make it the first thing in the morning and then while you're watching you know don't press the pause button and then on your computer yeah i forgot to do this homework i forgot to do this send this email no attentively participate indeed donate generously now why do you need to donate generously because donation is moving that prayer into action so we donate to the needs of the church and when we begin to do this what happens is your heart begins to grow when your heart begins to grow even though we are in this difficult situation we can't attend the eucharist physically daily as we would like to as our heart grows we will be able to face the situation as it is not only that grow during these times so form these five good habits and i do wish that you will always have this bread with you so that when you receive the bread of jesus christ the union of communion will be so great because you will be bringing something to the lord as the lord brings his graces his presence to you have a good day [Music] there is much to be grateful for because everything that we are and have god provides because he loves us he created us into one body one church made of many parts so as a church let us continue to ignite and shine our faith may our love for christ and for one another flourish thrive and touch the lives of many people let us support our church's vision to be a more vibrant evangelizing and missionary church
