[Music] welcome to the live streaming of the holy mass from the redemptorist media center let us pray for the following intentions during this sacred celebration you are [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] glory we praise you [Applause] [Music] dear friends a very warm welcome to each one of you who are participating in this holy celebration i'm very happy to welcome in our midst father peter michael who's going to be celebrating this holy mass and preaching the invitation sermon for our lenten mission as already announced for the peter along with father pradeep mandol will be preaching the lenten mission for us for this entire week so along with father sandeep for the peck and all of us here at rmc and along with you i would like to extend a warm welcome to father peter michael thank you father charles in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit homer the grace of our lord jesus christ and the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all your spirit brothers and sisters in jesus christ today as we gather around this table of plenty as we celebrate the first sunday of lent we ask ourselves what is god challenging me today to do god calls us to love but sometimes we misuse our power and instead of loving we dominate we pull people down we try to break them let us look into our hearts and ask ourselves have i been true to my mission of loving this sunday as we reflect on our lives as we begin the lenten mission let us ask god to forgive us and thereby take part in this eucharist in a worthy manner i confess to almighty god unto you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done and in what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary of a virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us may forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen [Music] have mercy [Music] let us pray grant almighty god through the yearly observances of holy lent that we may grow in understanding of the riches hidden in christ and by worthy conduct pursue their effects through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen the first reading a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses said to the people the priest shall take the basket of first fruits from your hand and set it down before the altar of the lord your god and you shall make response before the lord your god a wandering our remain was my father and he went down into egypt and sojourned there few in number and there he became a nation great mighty and populous and the egyptians treated us harshly and humiliated us and laid on us hard labor then we cried to the lord the god of our fathers and the lord heard our voice and saw our affliction our toil and our oppression and the lord brought us out of egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm with great deeds of terror with signs and wonders and he brought us into this place and gave us this land a land flowing with milk and honey and behold now i bring the first of the fruit of the ground which you o lord have given me and you shall set it down before the lord your god and worship before the lord your god the word of the lord thanks be to god your response shall be be with me o lord when i am in distress be with me o lord when i am in distress he who dwells in the shelter of the most high and abides in the shade of the almighty says to the lord my refuge my stronghold my god in whom i trust be with me o lord when i am in distress upon you no evil shall fall no plague approach your tent for you has he commanded his angels to keep you in all your ways be with me o lord when i am in distress they shall bear you upon their hands lest you strike your foot against a stone on the lion and the viper you will tread and trample the young lion and the serpent be with me o lord when i am in distress since he clings to me in love i will free him protect him for he knows my name when he calls on me i will answer him i will be with him in distress i will deliver him and give him glory be with me o lord when i am in distress a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans brethren what does scripture say the word is near you in your mouth and in your heart that is the way the word of faith that we proclaim because if you confess with your mouth that jesus is lord and believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead you will be saved for with the heart one believes and is justified and with the mouth one confesses and is saved for the scripture says everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame for there is no distinction between a jew and greek for the same lord is lord of all bestowing his riches on all who call on him for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord thanks be to god please rise for the gospel [Music] man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of god [Music] christ the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to saint luke glory to you o lord at that time jesus full of the holy spirit returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit in the wilderness for 40 days being tempted by the devil and he at nothing during those days and when they were over he was hungry the devil said to him if you are the son of god command the stone to become red and jesus answered him it is written man shall not live by bread alone and the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time and said to him to you i will give all this authority and this glory for it has been delivered to me and i give it to whom i will if you then will worship me it will all be yours and jesus answered him it is written you shall worship the lord your god and him only shall you serve and he took him to jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him if you are the son of god throw yourself down from here for it is written he will command his angels concerning you to guard you and on their hands they will bear you up lest you strike your foot against a stone and jesus answered him it is said you shall not put the lord your god to the test and when the devil had ended every temptation he departed from him until an opportune time the gospel of the lord praised you lord jesus christ my brothers and sisters in jesus christ during the world war ii a lot of atrocities were committed against humanity and in a particular way against one particular group of minority the jews there were number of concentration camps erected and jews were put into the concentration camps and all kinds of wrong things were done to them one of the notorious concentration camps was auschwitz in poland and the the general of this concentration camp hugo care was a terror one day he got some priests some jesuit priests arrested and they were put into this concentration camp the superior of this community was not there and when he returned and he realized that his brothers were arrested and now in the concentration camp this brave man somehow got inside the concentration camp it is very difficult it would have been very difficult to get in but he somehow got in risking his life going in search of his brothers but for his bad luck he was caught and when he was brought in front of this general he thought it is game over but for some reason that day the general let him go well the war ended and hugo care was arrested and tried for for all atrocities that he had committed and as fate would have it this man who committed atrocities against the jews was brought back to the very same place where he did all these crimes he was brought back to auschwitz and now he was a prisoner there and his prisoner and his in charges were the poles he was afraid that they would treat him the same way he treated their own countrymen but to his surprise the polls did not do that they were good to him and this touched his heart he was a changed man and he asked them may i get a priest i we need to talk to him hugo care was a christian but because of hitler's influence he was rather he was a catholic and he had left the faith but that day when the priest came to talk to him the very same priest whom he had set free was brought in and hugo confessed his sins to this priest he was a changed man and he said to him father i am going to be hung at the gallows this is the way i'm going to be executed and i deserve it but i want to receive jesus will you please bring the eucharist for me and on the day he was hung he received the communion and then he died brothers and sisters in jesus christ this true incident drives home an important point that the world has been after power to dominate it has lusted after power this is our ingrained nature that we want control of other people we want control of our lives we will control to dominate to break people but if we look at what the soldiers did to hugo care that turned this man from an animal from a criminal into somebody who was looking forward to meeting his lord it was because of their love and forgiveness so while we have power on one hand which we lust after which can only destroy we have an antidote to that we have love that can help us that is why charlie chaplin says you need you need power only if you want to do wrong if you want to destroy but otherwise love is sufficient love is enough during the first in the first reading that we heard today from the book of deuteronomy chapter 26 deuteronomy chapter 1 begins with moses explaining the law to the people telling the people their identity telling them how they should live in the chapter 26 he reminds them this is what you have gone through you are going through and one day you will enter into the promised land when you enter the promised land do not forget the lord your god who has set you free you were slaves in egypt but god has called you out and made you a great nation do not forget your lord and god in the following chapters god tells moses these people will forget me these people will forget me and they will be back under the yoke of slavery my brothers and sisters in jesus christ this is our nature the israelites were given everything by god all they needed to do was to love god with all their heart with all their mind with everything that they had and to love their identity and their mission but instead of that we see time and time again the israelites went after power they wanted to be independent they wanted to do what they wanted to do this is not the first time our quest for power our lust for power begins with the fall of humanity where adam and eve although they were in the garden of eden everything was given to them they let god down because they wanted to become like god they wanted to they wanted power they did not want the love of god dear friends in the gospel we hear about jesus jesus is baptized and jesus is led by the spirit in the wilderness he is tempted by the evil one jesus fast for 40 days and 40 nights he's hungry so the temptations of jesus are actually a reflection on his own powers he is god almighty he is the one who created everything out of nothing he created every single thing do you think it would have been difficult for this jesus who will be feeding thousands of people in the wilderness with just five loaves and two fish will it be difficult for this jesus who will bring people back to life will it be difficult for people who will heal so many people not impossible not at all the evil one is tempting jesus first to turn the stones into bread second to bow down at him and the third to perform a great miracle so that people will be wowed and people will fall at his feet this is the temptation of jesus i am powerful i have a lot of power do i use this power to dominate do i use this power to break or do i use this love this road of love which is going to be a difficult road to show to people that i love you although i am powerful i will not misuse my power to break you down i love you i've come in search of you you have gone in search of power to dominate to break people but i love you and i will win you back my brothers and sisters there's a beautiful parallel in the first chapter of the the book of deuteronomy we hear these are the words that moses spoke to all israel beyond the jordan in the wilderness and these people are promised so much and then we read in the gospel filled with the holy spirit jesus left the jordan and was left by the spirit through the wilderness what a beautiful comparison similar situations similar situation wilderness here wilderness there but jesus comes out triumphant he does not give in temptation of using his mighty power but he chooses to take this humble path of love my dear brothers and sisters love is a language that we all understand power destroys love builds love waits patiently during the season of lent god is reminding us that we to have our own wilderness we have been baptized we have received the holy spirit at a baptism confirmed and the holy spirit leads us through this wilderness of life and there are a number of temptations and we might think if i have power over everything that is in my life i will be happy and what do we do in this lust for power in this quest for power we break people we commit atrocities against people we break relationships we are unjust to others we had we just have to follow one law the law of love but we fail to do that and that is the reason when we go looking for something that will give us independence we think will give us freedom we actually land into slavery we actually land into slavery ask an alcoholic or a drug addict or a person who is into smoking i've interacted with a few of them and i'm sure you have come across many of them ask them why don't you leave this what is the problem with you can't you see the destruction you're causing to yourself can't you see the destruction that you're causing to your family and they will turn around and tell you and if they're they confide in you if they can trust you they will tell us i'm trying my best but i don't know it has taken control of me you see my friends youngsters men women who thought drugs will give them power alcohol will give them something and other things like pornography or something might make them feel in charge ultimately has taken control of them they are not free in our lives too my brothers and sisters let us ask ourselves what is controlling me or what do i want to control in this wilderness of life that i go through god is asking me are you going to choose this power path of power or are you going to choose this path of love love can change can change all of us it did he died for us and that is why we are saved dear brothers and sisters during the season of lent as we reflect on our journey through this wilderness let us make this honest choice lord there have been times when i have destroyed people's names lord there have been times when i have used my power to lord it over on people who come to serve me my servants those people who serve me in my house my daughter-in-law or my mother-in-law or people who are working for me or if i'm a politician if i'm a person in authority in authority lord i've misused my power and i do not want to do that today lord i want to follow this path of love dear brothers and sisters the lent season is a beautiful opportunity for changing so that we do not fall into the trap that israel fell into that we have jesus who leads us who inspires us the responsorial psalm said be with me lord in my distress god is there with us in our wilderness he walks with us he helps us we have to make this choice the mission that you will be attending will help you my brothers and sisters to reflect on your life a life that probably is a life that is more dependent on power fear to turn it into a life of love a life like that of jesus which is life-giving to others my brothers and sisters do not waste this opportunity this is a beautiful opportunity and this opportunity is given to you right in the comfort of your home you can choose the time that you want the mission sermons will be premiered early in the morning and you as a family can decide okay we are going to sit at this particular hour when everybody is together and listen to this mission god is going to speak to us he's going to challenge us there are things that we need to change in our lives so that we can become loving people so that we can become a family which is a family of love so that we can become people who can bring love of god to others let us pray my dear brothers and sisters for every single person who will be attending the mission in why invite your friends share the links with them and dear friends be a messenger of god be a messenger of love pray for us as we pray for you and let us pray in a very special way during this eucharist for each other let us now profess our faith i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen in order to face the various temptations in life with faith hope and courage let us ask for god's empowering presence with us your response lord hear our prayer lord hear our prayer that the holy mother church may overcome all forms of temptations and live her call of discipleship in a worthy manner lord hear our prayer that the leaders of the people may not fall prey to the temptation of selfishness and narrow-mindedness when they make and implement policies lord hear our prayer that families who struggle to exist in the midst of poverty and hardships may be empowered by the lord to remain strong in their faith lord hear our prayer that all who are addicted to various kinds of habitual sins may be empowered by the lord to overcome their weakness and lead a more virtuous life lord hear our prayer that this celebration of the eucharist may be a source of strength to all of us in resisting the evil one lord hear our prayer let us pray lord god we thank you for empowering us in the death and resurrection of jesus christ as we battle against the tempter in our daily life may we be aware of our weakness and rely on you alone we make this prayer through christ our lord amen [Music] you are [Music] this is [Music] changed [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Music] change my [Music] pray my brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be pleasing to our heavenly father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and good of all his holy church give us the right disposition o lord we pray to make these offerings for with them we celebrate the beginning of this venerable and sacred time we make this prayer through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we'll lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord by abstaining 40 days 40 long days from earthly food he consecrated through his fast the pattern of our lenten observance and by overturning all the snares of the ancient serpent taught us to cast out the leaven of malice so that celebrating worthily the paschal mystery we might pass over at last to the eternal paschal feast and so with the company of angels and saints we sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim [Music] [Music] oh [Music] yes [Music] [Music] [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith is [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and peter our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever god does not misuse his power but in fact he is a god who is our father who loves us and so my dear friends at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we all dare to say our father what in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles and who say to each one of us this morning peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever amen my brothers my sisters the peace of the lord be with you always and with your spirit look at your family members and please offer each other a very sincere sign of peace peace be with you is [Music] oh [Music] is [Music] [Music] a god of love our god who serves is here let us pray that we become like him behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed my jesus i believe that you are truly present in the most blessed sacrament i love you above all things and i desire to possess you within my soul since i am unable now to receive you sacramentally come at least spiritually into my heart i embrace you as being already there and unite myself wholly to you never permit me to be separated from you amen [Music] [Music] [Music] who show your love to all your creation we come before you asking for the end of the pandemic currently ravaging our world grant healing to the sick eternal life to the dead and consolation to the bereaved families protect doctors nurses and others serving the sick we pray for all governments and health authorities that they take appropriate steps for the good of the people we make our prayer in the name of jesus christ your son our lord and redeemer amen let us pray renewed now with heavenly bread by which faith is nourished hope increased and charity strengthened we pray o lord that we may learn to hunger for christ the true and living bread and strive to live by every word which proceeds from your mouth we make this prayer through christ our lord amen dear friends thank you for joining us in the celebration of this holy eucharist the inaugural must for our lenten mission 2022 right after the mass at 10 15 a.m the mission service will premiere on our youtube channel it'll be the first mission service and in the evening at seven we will have a special rosary though it's a sunday we will have because of the mission we will have live praying of the holy rosary followed by a short adoration and that would be the mission program for today so do join us tomorrow at 7 00 am for live mass and again it's in the evening at 7 00 for the rosary and short adoration the mission service will premiere at 6 00 am in the morning so you can schedule according to your convenience the main thing is that you'll you're able to come together as a family so together and participate in this mission together as a family because we have the mission going on and it's it's a time that we have so many other activities going on so we will not premiere any new episodes of who's who in the bible for this week we will resume again in the next uh week as as you're aware the lenten season is a very special time of grace and for us redemptress there's a time when we go out for lenten missions to parishes after two years a good number of our redemptors would be going physically to parishes and conducting lenten missions so please keep all the redemptors in your prayers and that these lenten missions may truly be a time of renewal and coming back to god our weekend retreats in dasia in goa is on father joey will be just will be just concluding the first weekend retreat and there are weekend retreats planned for every week so please keep these uh weekend lenten retreats in your prayers as we go forward as well and um i'm not very sure how many places are still available but if you're still planning you're most welcome to call the contact numbers over there and register yourself on friday the day when we have the stations of the cross as we're having the mission the stations of the cross would be preached as part of our lenten mission so we will have the live mass and evening prayer as well along with we will have the stations of the cross as part of our lenten uh practice novena on saturday as usual so please send in your thanksgivings and petitions as early as possible and our new podcast series daily homily is our own so you're most welcome to listen to our homilies all the homilies that are preached during the services here are put up on as podcast and also on our youtube channel so some of you want to kind of listen to only to the homilies you're most welcome to do so dear friends thank you for all your support your prayers especially during this time we request for your prayers for all the lenten
