What's that you have there? This is the cutest tiniest jar I have ever seen. And what are we gonna do with those jars? Sorry, were you gonna say something? I was trying to lead you in the intro. Fill them with custom paint that we're making today. We figured we have all of these pigments. Generically mica, glow in the dark things universal colors, Fluorescent pigments, duo chrome pigments, which could actually fully color shift, between two colors, holographic glitter. Alcohol inks, all of these things that are so colorful, bold, bright, and out there, there are all sorts of paints that you can buy, but why buy cool paints, when you can make even cooler paints? KATELYN: This video is brought to you by Squarespace. The all in one platform for all your website needs. We know we don't actually know if that's gonna work, because all of these pigments we use with resin. So will that translate? I don't know. I don't know, but basically paint in general, based on my understanding is just some sort of medium, that carries the pigment, dries and holds it in a steady state. 'Cause like you can't mix this with water and paint with it, because even though you can kinda paint with it, once the water dries, the pigment just will fall off. So you need some sort of a glue and suspension medium. Anyways, we have generic acrylic medium and that's what we're gonna be mixing everything into. We've also got this fancy mixer. Yeah, so hopefully- Should we plug it in? I feel like it'd be better for the intro, if we plugged it in. Yeah just, oops- Don't- sorry- Do you wanna do it from the other side? Nah, I got it. (metal clanking) Engage the vibrator (Katelyn laughs) (playful music) (Evan laughing hysterically, Katelyn yelling) My fingers are gonna fall off! (Evan laughing) That's so weird, it's so weird. Hopefully that works. Anyways, we're gonna try to mix some of each of our different types of pigments and see if we can make paint with it. And then at the end, actually try to do some paintings. Yeah! 'Cause it doesn't count as paint, if we can't actually make art out of them. Yeah, yeah. There we go. There we go, let's do it. (upbeat music) As two people who take science very seriously, as you can see by our new Science Robes that Evan got us for Christmas, that actually say Science Robes on them. We wanted to go into this with some methodology in place. Yeah, so we decided we should choose one color as a control through all of the various mix-ins. We chose blue because... We have blue in every mixin type. But in addition to that we also wanted to pick, a wild card from each mixin. Yeah, whether it's metallic or duo chrome or whatever. Each of these has a little bit of a unique property to it. And I think that we should also potentially start with the same amount of fluid medium and a similarsh amount of volume of scoop, or whatever it is. Yeah, the amount of scoop might differ, if it's a powder versus a liquid, but we'll keep it as consistent as possible. We're also gonna do swatch tests. Yeah, but before we do any of that, let's see if the mixer even works. Is this video doomed to fail from the beginning? Oh my gosh, that's satisfying. Three milliliters, ooooh, this is so fun. I need to get my tiny container out. Bloop Ooh! Let's start with a- 32nd teaspoon? Yeah, my guess is that we might need more, to make a strong effects, but I'm not sure. We did watch, uh-oh! It's not gonna go- Can I have one of the tools? Oh wait, or we can make a funnel. Just with paper. Oh I just wanna use one of these. You're gonna spill. I'm so precise. No you're not. (both chuckles) You're not precise. Look at that. Also, did you level that teaspoon? Pretty much. You did not level it. Our science is doomed from the start. (playful music) (both laughs) Great, great! (Evan giggling) Just cap that tidy little package off. Do you wanna shakin' or should I? I'll do it, Yep, that looks good, Ready? Yeah. (machine vibrating) (both yelling) It can't stay up with the focus. 'Cause I have such hard time focusing. Try the other camera, try the other camera. I manually focused it! I manually focused it! (Katelyn shrieks) My hand is so jiggly, turn it off. Oh, my bones (Evan laughs) Wow, it mixed it. How well though? It looks good. It looks good, I can- Let's swatch it though. Yeah, let's swatch, yeah. Let's swatch it. The frequency at which it was jiggling, was like matching with something I was getting this like strange effect honestly. (upbeat music) I mean that looks like it's working. Kind of like a thin paint. (upbeat music) It's a little watery. A little watery. Yeah. Yeah, like the pigment load isn't that great. We can try doubling the pigment. Yeah, let's increase the pigment. Okay, do you wanna just put another 32nd in here? Yeah, let's up another 32nd. That was my guess of what was gonna happen, Engage the mixer! It creates such a weird effect. It's weird in real life too honestly. I feel like I'm teleporting. (Evan chuckles) Is it better? I mean, how thick can we pack the powder? We can just keep going. I'm gonna do two scoops. I'm gonna double it again. Okay. So what it's doing this vortex mixer in particular, it's shaking it in the way that the paint creates a vortex and actually mixes it instead of just shaking. It helps reduces bubbles, right? Yeah. (Salsa music) Better, I think if we double it one more time. It might be approaching like usable- Yeah! Paint levels. That's crazy, it's gonna be a quarter teaspoon. (Evan clears throat) This is so uncomfortable to hold. I know, does it feel like your bones are jiggling? (Evan muttering) Better than hand mixing it. Why hand mix when robot mix good? Even in the skinny parts where it's really thin, you are getting some color. Yeah, now, do we wanna take it further? (light salsa music) You almost lost it. (Evan laughs) I think that's, that's pretty good. Yeah. How much darker is it? You do get diminishing returns. Dang, half a teaspoon, is it equal parts? Let's do a conversion. I wonder who's gonna be first to get color on their Science Robe. Me (Evan chuckles) Three milliliters is .6 teaspoon. Almost one-to-one now. Almost one-to-one. Okay, so with the ratio of half a teaspoon to three milliliters confirmed. We're gonna move forward, except for we are cutting everything in half, because we don't want things to be so filled, that they have a hard time mixing, but we'll keep the ratio and let's do a duo chrome. So, 1 1/2 milliliters precisely. (light upbeat music) (camera beeps) I wasn't recording earlier, it's fine. it's fine when I forget to record, 'cause I can only be mad at myself. (Evan laughs) (light upbeat music) Try to hold on. (machine vibrating) Ooh! Oh, my gosh! I'm so glad bought this mixer. I've said it like five times already. Good investment. That's a really pretty paint. It's well mixed. Ooh. Ooh. I would honestly, I'd put this on my face. (Evan laughs) Looks nice, that's my kinda color right there. I'm excited like, actually paint with this. All right, there's our blue mica and our special wildcard mica. Shall we try the next powder? Yeah- Whatever pigment we decided to do? I think that this might be a little bit preemptive but mica powder, paint, success. (suspenseful music) Okay, so to mix it up, next we're gonna do, alcohol inks. I have strong worries about this. Yeah, I mean, on one hand the carrying fluid is alcohol. So maybe it will kind of just dissolve out. But on the other hand, maybe it will break down the binder in the acrylic medium. I don't know. I don't know. How should I measure this, should we do teaspoons or drops? Yeah. Just drops maybe. One drop. Ooh! Should we need do two? Do like five. Okay, two, three, four, five. Ready? Yeah. Hold on to your... jar! Ooh! Ooh! Yes! Oh, it's creamy. Oh, I almost lost it there for a second. It looks mixed. It looks mixed. It mixes in like 15 seconds, it's crazy. You wanna talk more about how you're happy with the purchase of this mixer? (Evan laughs) Yeah, wow! It looks nice. It's dense, so when it's spread out, will it even work as a painter? Worried it's gonna be really thin. This is so watery. Yeah, cause the alcohol really makes it super spreadable. Let's, instead of just doubling, doubling, doubling Let's go to 15 minimum. let's go to 20. Yeah. 20 drops. So I add 15 more, let's just, yeah. Let's just go for it. Let's just go for it. Six, seven (fast forwarded count) (light salsa music) A lot of liquid. That's the hard thing too. Yeah. (salsa music) (machine vibrating) So this, this isn't even really like acrylic paint anymore. This is like literally half acrylic paint, Half alcohol. Half alcoholic ink. I mean, that's pretty good. This is so liquidy. There's diminishing returns if- There's diminishing return so if we keep adding liquid, but this is like a really pigmented watercolor come think of it. And I think that's pretty good for the alcoholic ink ratio. Yeah, I think that's good. Let's do wild card alcohol ink. Yeah, let's do gold! Gold! Yeah! I like gold! I wonder if it's gonna stay looking gold, or if it's gonna like matte-ify to like a tan, or be like a slightly shimmery beige. (Evan giggles) Only one way to find out, but my guess is it's gonna flat-ify. I'm just having so much fun right now! I know. This is like, Something that brings me joy. Me too, it's like an excuse to do little science projects with our art suppliers. Yeah, with these cute little jars. (both chuckles) I have to admit, one quarter of my enjoyment are the jars. I know, is another quarter the vibrator? Yeah! (both laughs) This vibrator brings me joy. (both laughing) That's on the internet forever. (laughs hysterically) Out of context Evan and Katelyn. (fast forwarded count) (light upbeat music) I was really struggling with blinking, (Evan laughs) not blinking because I didn't want it to drip and I miss it. Oh, okay. (light music) (machine vibrating) Ooh! Are you gonna be beige? I'll take over for a bit. I feel like we shouldn't pass it off mid go. That seems dangerous. Oh, it's so, it just looks beige. It looks beige. It looks beige, Oh, that's unfortunate looking. You know what? It's a champagne. It's champagne. Cham-pog-nuh. It's cham-pog-nuh. Another thing that's interesting, is the reason why we went with this acrylic medium, is it does dry, fully transparent, but there is some whiteness when it's not dry. So I wonder once it's fully dried, if the gold will show through more than it does now. Oh yeah. Oh, no! Ooh! This one just looks like sludge. and there's like chunks Wow! Such a big difference. That's disappointing. Well, I'm glad that we are testing these special case scenarios. Yeah, yeah- So, with alcoholic inks we now know, that if you use two straight colorant, it might work okay. But if you try to go some like special metallics, oh no, you end up with unpleasantness. Well, hey, we're learning. (light music) All right, we actually have another liquid candidate. Let me say that differently. All right, next up, we're gonna be testing, universal colorant or universal tinting paste, which I actually have better hopes for. This is a very concentrate. When we've added it to resin in the past, it just turned it opaque. I'm, gonna start with the same five drops. Oh, that's a bubble. (tense music) Oh, the bubbles is filling the drop. Oh, what do I do? Let it drop. (tense music) Ah! Here. Oh, thank you. Oh, sorry! One, It's thick drops. Two, three, four, five. Okay, so this is a thick, A thick. (machine vibrating) Oh, that did pretty good. Yeah, it makes me nervous when it goes sideways. Wow. That's dark. Wow! That's really dark. Ooh! Dang! It's very rich. Now, let's see how it looks. Oh! In paint form. Just even this looking at it. I know. Oh, okay. Can I just take a moment. (Evan giggles) Okay. To brag about the mixer again, I guess! Yes. Just look at that. No splashing. Yeah. Oh, on the lid? On the lid. (salsa beat) Wow. That's nice. Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wee! Should I just do, should I leave it there? I think that's good. I mean, that seems similar to the 20 drops of alcoholic ink. Wow, wow! That's paint. That's paint. Yeah. Universal tinting paste. You live up to your name. Yeah, what is this? I don't know. Tinting paste- Universal tinting paste. It tint's things. Okay, so what's your wildcard? Uh- silver! Oh good. Yeah 'cause the gold absolutely completely failed. Yeah, will the same be true for the silver? I don't know. One, two, three, four, five. Go for it. (machine vibrating) (Katelyn gasps) (Evan laughs) We may, we need safety goggles. Maybe, wow! I mean, that looks, much nicer than the alcohol bold. That's impressive. Let's see how- Let's see how it paints though. It feels like modeling paint almost. (light salsa music) I Mean it's pretty good. It's better than the gold alcohol. Not quite as good as the blue universal. I think this still passes though. That looks looks good. I'm happy with it. Same. And I think that now that I have a general theory, but I'll have to do a lot more tests to figure it out. Based on some of the research that I've done, different pigments are actually gonna need different amounts, even with a universal, that blue might be more densely packed, than the silver or the red or the whatever. Yeah. It might depend on what pigments I used in that color. (salsa music) Next, how about we start with a glowy one? Ooh, which of the two glowies do you want to do first? That UV, this is gonna be interesting, 'cause we don't have very much of this. Yeah, are we even gonna have enough for a quarter of a tablespoon? I forget, is this a loose powder? I Don't want to- It's loose, it's loose. Okay. EVAN: So careful when you open it. KATELYN: I know, I don't want it to puff everywhere. This shouldn't be the hard part of the video. (both chuckles) Need some help? No! There we go, okay, I got it. (light music) Oh we definitely don't have a quarter- Maybe we can mix blue and one of the purples. Let me see how much we have. Of all of them, this is like the least fine. They've kind of clumped. Well, no, it's super fine. It's just so fine that it's clumping. It's like a chalk dust. We might have enough. I think that's enough. Yeah, get in there every bit. Do you ever have that moment of panic where you're like what was I recording? All the time. (machine vibrating) (Evan giggles) What? It looks so weird on camera. I feel like maybe we should do one of these in slow motion. Oh, yes! It's pretty nice. It seems to be dissolved. We'll need to bust up UV light to really see the effect. EVAN: $12 worth of paint. There, right there. I mean some of it's in the bottle. Which we'll keep forever and cherish. It's still cool, there's still a cool effect. There's still a cool effect. Now here's the question. Now that we know it being in paint form is sort of a waste, do we do another one, or do we go straight to the special surprise guests? (Italian music) So for our final custom paint, we thought we would bring in something from a past project, where we mixed every single one of our mica powders and glitters into a mega pigment. EVAN: Called The Everything. KATELYN: That's a nice name for it, 'cause it looks like a club dance floor. It looks like a sludge. Yeah, it looks like a glitter sludge. (giggles) Glitter sludge So now we're gonna make glitter sludge paint. Okay, you look at this guys. This is, The Everything. (automated cheers) Ta-da There it is. Look at all those little... Terrible in the jar, great in the paint. (hands clap) I doubt it. (Evan laughs) You wanna do this one? I'd love to, I'd be honored. Honored. Honored. And those conclude this wonderful experiment. No, it is not concluded. Oh, no, yeah- How dare you? This is honestly just the beginning. We need to put them to an actual practical tests. Yeah, we still need to get our beautiful canvases KATELYN: And paint them with with it. EVAN: And paint something, yeah. KATELYN: Before we do, what are your thoughts? Honestly think that this is a stunning success. Some pleasantly surprised me, like the fluorescent and the glows. I didn't think those would make great paints at all. And some disappointed me like the duo chrome. At the same time, if you were going to paint a miniature... Figurine or something Figurine. Duo chrome would be cool. Duo chrome! KATELYN: Yeah, and some of them are really pretty. The sheen of some of the duo chrome mica, the concentration you can get of the glitter And honestly like even the alcohol, KATELYN: It's like a more opaque water coat. Yeah. Okay. So now that we're gonna put these to the test and actually paint some paintings. Are you happy with these colors? Cause we have a lot of blues, but we don't have much else. Should we do like a mixing other colors quick montage? Yes. (upbeat music) (upbeat music continues) So we have all of our new custom paints mixed. Are you ready to start your art? I'm ready. (fire blast) I'm gonna be going for a space scape. A planet floating in the sky, because I think we'll be able to use, a lot of these fancy pigments that we've made, to get cool space effects. (upbeat music) KATELYN: I'm gonna do some Joob art, with the colorful abstract background, to take advantage of all the custom colors we have. 'Cause she has my muse and I can't not paint Joob. (upbeat music) I'm really glad that we actually took a little bit of time to make actual, tiny, tiny paintings using the paint that we made. It was really fun seeing all the different effects combined into a single painting. This is something that I don't know how we would've made otherwise. Well, there's so much more that I want to say about this project and these beautiful paints, but I don't want this video to be over 40 minutes long. So we're actually going to stop recording this and start recording our Patreon after show which we do after every project video. It's an additional 10 to 20 minutes of us, chit chatting about behind the scenes stuff. If you want to watch that, head over to patreon.com/EvanAndKatelyn and we'll see you in the next content. Bye! Bye! You gotta stab some fish. We're gonna die of hunger. But I wanna- Yeah, you can eat. I wanna stab some of this for a little bit. Stab a fish? Stab a fish. Stab a fish, that's a bladder fish. Oh, yeah? Yeah. You gonna just, pick it, you can just grab it. Oh, but you let 'em go. You gotta stab him. I see some bladder fishes. Oh, the bladder fish. Yeah. Oh yeah, you need to stab them first. Oh my gosh, my oxygen is so low!
