Calling on your Tribe in a Storm | Pastor Troy Brewer

Church will you join me and welcome in the whole wide world to open door Church on this really cool Sunday morning boom [Applause] man I bless you guys would call y'all blessed in a mighty name of King Jesus welcome welcome welcome guys last Sunday I preached on overcoming anxiety and I talked about the road to Emmaus and that there's two main things out of bullets chapter 24 that you learned on the front from the story of the road to Emmaus that number one Jesus is there when you don't know he's there right on and it's so right on but number two and this is really cool many times it's Jesus when you don't know it's Jesus and there's a lot of things within our own lives that we had but we just think it's us we think it's our humanity but it's actually Jesus jumping into our humanity and like man I had no idea that that was you I'm gonna be telling some some really cool stories on Wednesday night concerning that because I want to tell you that I'm also about to start a brand new sermon series so I thought well I'll start it today but I don't want to start it today because next week is Mama's Day and we're having a very special Mama's day a Sunday celebration and you're gonna want to come and I'm like I don't want to stop my sermon series so I'm being like I could preach anything on what yeah like man and that's fun for me man that's fine and so I want to tell you I'm I want to talk to you about overcoming anxiety and storms and I want to talk to you I want to kind of continue on that just a little bit because this is a season right now that God's calling the church to overcome anxiety I'm serious guys and I I want to throw this out there to you and tell you this that that and I'm not I'm not proud of this at all but a couple months back well actually when I got back from Belize came home and there was a there was a particularly challenging something that happened and and the bottom line is I had an anxiety attack I thought I was having a heart attack and I was out feeding my cows on back eight acres and I went wow dude I can't breathe and I didn't have my phone with me and I was a long ways from the house and I was like okay well I just sit down and I put my back up against a fence post and went well this is it I'm having a heart attack this is it I'll be dipped didn't see this coming today and I'm just sitting there going okay and then I went I ain't got time to die like it's not on my schedule and I just start going whoa wait a minute what is this what is this I remember I haven't had I haven't had a vapor lock anxiety attack since I was a kid I used to do that when I was a kid and my early teens I did that a lot I mean I haven't had that happen since then I went now I know what this is I know and I wasn't I wasn't thinking about anything stressful I was doing what I wanted to do and what had happened was that week when I came back pastor Jerry got with me and they had to tell me something that they've never had to tell me before and it was regarding something that's very personal to me and regarding something that affects Troy Brewer ministries in a really big way and they didn't know they didn't know what I was going to do because they've never had to deal with me concerning this and I want any I handled it perfect and you can ask Pastor Jerry let me not handled it like a pro I just said look guys we are all adults and we're all men and women of God let's figure this thing out let's cry out to God but unless let's don't just freak out and let's let's find a solution you know what we actually did start finding some solutions and we jumped in the right place and it was good but I want to tell you man even though I handled it really right I had a bunch of stuff inside me concerning this thing and I have I have a tremendous burden for saving these girls that I just can't it's hard for me to describe and when something threatens that I mean I know their pictures I know the girls right now that need us to rescue them and what you all we got to do is just raise the funds and I know that and I and I think about it every day and I just I just had to really turn to God and say okay I'm carrying some stuff in me that isn't my job to carry and so I want to show you there's three different words that I want to show you that God showed me in the midst of all this and the first word is the word sin now we're all aware of sin except for sadly most Christians think that you know sin is you know if you drink and if you chew and if you go with girls that do right so actually sin is whatsoever is not of faith okay so that's actually what sin is so anything that you have to abandon God to be able to participate in is sin anything that you have to walk away from Jesus from in order to walk in to something is sin and that's how come some things are sinful to some people that are not sinful to other people and Paul Paul goes out of his way to explain that right there are some things that you have the Liberty to do that other people do not have the Liberty to do because this is a very very very relational process between us and King Jesus right on so but I want you to look at this word sin I want you to look at what's right in the middle of the word sin it's I I mean so sin happens and we walk in sin and we partner with sin whenever it's all about us and as a matter of fact I want to show you another word the word pride I want you to look at what is right in the center of the word pride I now I want to I want to show this to you because I'm promise you that these three words are related the next word is anxiety do you see what is right in the center of the word anxiety you see it don't you III sounds like Ozzy Osbourne who's on a crazy train all right you get a get off that crazy train that ain't for you I'm telling you guys the Lord has told me when I went Busta gutta because guys if you've been experienced a lot of anxiety number one welcome to humanity and number two number two you don't have to bow your life to that after I had this anxiety attack and I mean it just manifested in my life in a way that I just couldn't breathe and I just vapor locked and I just went I'm not living like that that's not a life that I'm interested in living in I don't want to live like that and how can I stay on the cutting edge of making sure that these things are done and understanding the importance of it staying motivated being involved and still be a man of peace not just outwardly but actually inwardly in places I can't even see and don't even know that that kind of stuff is in there guys want to show you what Philippians chapter 4 says Philippians chapter 4 says rejoice in the Lord always again I say rejoice you known that you served Jesus one of the ways they that you serve Jesus doesn't have anything to do with the food bank it doesn't have nothing to do with saving girls out of sexual trafficking it doesn't have anything to do with it with your ministry in this church or whatever it has to do with it with your emotional response and what you replay over and over and over again rejoicing means you replay your joy for the Lord now if you're full of strife and I know what it's like to be full of strife I battled strife my whole life if you're somebody that has to deal with strife one of the things that happens is there'll be a replay button and you can't turn it off right let me tell you what you do you can displace that and you displace it by hitting the replay budding button on how you love King Jesus this is what Jesus did for me this is what Jesus did for me this is what Jesus did for me this is what Jesus did for me this is what Jesus did for me right and notice there's no I in that see that see the biggest enemy that I have is not the devil the in the biggest enemy that I have is enemy okay it's something internal I don't need a devil to mess me up I can sit right there on that front row and they're not even be anybody in this room and I'm getting a knock-down drag-out with somebody I haven't seen 35 years ago I can sit right there by myself and all kinds of craziness happened because my insight is about I and it's not about Jesus okay okay so then he says the next verse Oh what happened my Peter interview ended intent and Dan today and today I'm back verse 5 says let your gentleness be known to all men for the Lord as a hand very interesting verse and I would love to spend a lot of time on this but you need to you need to have a reputation of stability show people your stability be bound and determined gentleness doesn't just mean that you're like aw shucks right gentle gentleness means that you're not a thermometer you're a thermostat you come into the room and everybody's all upset and you like no no you're not upset anymore because I'm here tada it's like okay I'm not gonna get upset because everybody else is upset I'm not gonna freak out because everybody else is gonna freak out I'm not a thermometer I'm a thermostat amen and I have a responsibility to set a supernatural tone everywhere I go that's what that means my says let your gentleness be known to all men Oh verse 6 there's that word anxiety be anxious for nothing but in everything by prayer and supplication and Thanksgiving oh I'd like to preach on that prayer everybody say prayer supplication and Thanksgiving that's how you displace your anxiousness your anxiety let your request be made known to God and here's the promise that if you'll engage in that the God's response will be like this in the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds through Christ Jesus man I love that and now now we're gonna turn from our emotionally how we are emotionally serving to God to how we are going to mentally serve God then we're gonna have a very real mental posture that says this is how I serve God in my private thinking finally brethren whatsoever things are true whatsoever things are noble whatsoever things are just whatsoever things are pure whatsoever things are lovely whatsoever things of a good report and if there be any virtue and if there's anything praiseworthy meditate on these things and then Paul says this and these things which he learned and received and heard and you saw in me do that and the God of peace will be with you he's like this in a theory this is how I live my life I have a very intentional mental posture that there are certain things I think about and certain things I will not let myself think about anymore you don't have to think about everything you don't have to because everything is not healthy for you to think about amen okay well I know what it's like to have the peace of God that passes all understanding I also know what it's like to vapor lock and to have an anxiety attack now I lied when I said that I hadn't had one since I was a kid because I didn't thought about it until just now but actually there have been several times on airplanes that I've had an anxiety attack and I hadn't had that happen a long long time but one of the things that happens when when I have an anxiety attack as I can't breathe and a second thing is I just start crying [Music] and do that on an airplane one time me and Lana was coming back this 20-some odd years ago we were coming back from Los Angeles and we had a layover in Phoenix Arizona and it was real bumpy and I cried all the way from Los Angeles all the way there and I couldn't I just couldn't stop crying I couldn't say yeah yeah okay and we landed and I said I'm written a car I'm not getting back on plane ain't gonna happen today I'm driving home from Phoenix crazy isn't it can you imagine a guy like me being afraid of heights and flying as much as I'm on airplanes so I just had to learn just not to trust my feelings and I had to go oh yeah yeah I feel those things yeah but surely so what I'm victorious I'm good I'm good it's all good oh yeah yeah I'm good I'm good huh it's all right look a little bit slipped out right there if it's all good it's all good but I also know what it's like to have peace in something that's literally trying to kill you a few years ago I was involved in a scuba accident and I'm about to tell you this story and tell you what God did for me and tell you how not only we miraculously survived it but spoiler alert I live okay but I also have a good friend of mine that I'd like to invite to come up here and help me tell this story my friend's cousin Jimmy Cashen is in the house of I give Jamie a great big hand clap oh yeah little James Harold cash in the third now Jamie and I have been good for instance we were a little bit of kids I actually met Jamie in the third grade he was a second grader and I was a third grader and I met him because I met him in the spankin line at the principal's office it's true story true I would get sent to the office nearly every day to get a spankin and he was always in there waiting to get his spanking because he was demonic thank Jesus for safety and bringing him where he is today it was going down the wrong path you talk about me dude I was good so I started hanging out with you through you have ruined me you better be nice oh well I know your stories too so anyway we have we've been good friends ever since until then what's really cool is I when I got saved you know and you remember when I got saved you remember what a big deal that was y'all he would come to my apartment come one I'll never forget watching True Grit and who does not love True Grit the wrong I love True Grit he's my don't worry sir Jesus loves you and I'm like I have a barrel mother wouldn't open the door would not open the door cuz I thought he'd lost his mind truly happy it's serious because yeah well you was crazy and now you're not thank you Jesus you know what this is a good opportunity for you to publicly repent okay so just to kind of back up though there's been there been three times in your life that you have that you is certainly going to die absolutely in my in my mind yes okay and two of those times you were with me yes yeah so what's the common denominator in anything yeah you're the problem it's uh it me say it he wonders why my wife won't let me travel with her that's why he hangs around tray a lot because try to say so so so so honestly we nearly got killed in the prison in Colombia at that time and we would have we would have certainly been murdered if the Lord didn't intervene a green and do a chandus miracle and the guards actually put us in a room and wanted them to murder us because the last missionaries they killed them yeah they killed them of course they let that information tell us oh you made it yeah thanks so yeah and then another time was when you were 16 years old right and you were burned and you were on the fire department Joshua and you were burned and how badly were you burned Jamie 36% 36% of your body third-degree their degree and I remember the night the day of I went to the hospital and they they they're like he will certainly die he's he's not gonna make it he is not going to make it and I could remember your mom going no no no he's going to make it he will see up she was a big blade oh yeah she's a big-time big-time big-time believer and so literally you're in a hospital like a year Alma it was a long time was it was a really long time time and then I remember the first time that you got out of the hospital it was Halloween so I got to tell you this I gotta tell y'all this story it was Halloween and we wanted to see what this is going up in already we wanted to go to this corty toidy costume party frankly you know look this is BC okay because we were going to sneak to the bar is what we're gonna do and so I was gonna drink water yes that's what's you're famous for so so this is what we did I wouldn't put on a fireman uniform and he went as the burn victim he talked me into it and people people were like oh my god how did you do know what they do that they do that so so Halloween is like my only save this when people just don't stir it makes a thank God he's got really good makeup going on but I'm not exaggerating people will come up if you're ever out how Wow confident he was as a 16 year old kid can you imagine that hey you were a trip but then there's another time that you nearly got killed and and you were with me on that one as well and so so guys we're going to tell you the story of this because because there's a it goes in line with what I'm talking about finding the presence of God in the midst of your storm because because we nearly died in a scuba diving accident and I'm gonna kind of share this with you now you're you're a master diver yes sir and how many times have you had a little over 400 a little over 400 dives all over the world right and so I'm very much a novice compared to me that I might have many senior super you're like flipper out there and y'all sing just and n is the low but kind of good good [Applause] we've done some amazing things we actually went we went after well sharks and we have and we found the whale shark we've done crazy cool stuff and I have about 60 dives okay so you also you're and you you like when you do something you like do it all the way that's the way that you are and like you are a black belt and what degree black belt are you not too great ninth degree black belt it's a blessing that's what's so how many how many ninth degree got black boss in the world are there Jamie there's more now there used to not be that many at all but but there's definitely more now mr. Norris is one Carlos his real name is so it's just Morris which by the way is is a good friend of yours really good friends I've got really good really good Christian man Yama he's just thing about with you because you're friends with me you know that oh absolutely and thank you yeah thank you for that he's a good but he actually does he really does love the Lord absolutely and his whole goal in life him and his wife Gina it's all about kids so used to be kicked drugs out of America now it's kickstart kids and they're in like 60 schools in Texas they train over 80 thousand kids a day and it's a good it's a good solid solid program bringing the kingdom into our school it's a big deal guys okay listen we don't have much time I know what my fault it was - so here we go quit talking about Chuck Norris now your poor t-tauri friends all right so so so here's the deal we went scuba diving in Cozumel and we both flew down to Cozumel and we we went scuba dive and we were on a third dive of the day not a cloud in the sky beautiful blue sky and when we got in a third dive as soon as we got in the water there was the current was outrageous and I should have I should have known then that a storm was coming because the current the current is already big there anyway and it's a big huge but that there was Hurricane Earl was coming in and we had no idea okay and so as soon as you get in the water you just take off I mean just you just take off you know your your your bubbles go sideways and you just take off well because I'm kind of fat you know I float no it's not true you're Aquaman under water Thank You Yeti yeah and I was wearing you know I wear like you know anywhere between 16 and 20 pounds of weights when there we go so I was just literally just sitting like this just going through the water I mean booking like you know fall and I've never experienced anything like that I was loving it and that you know I'd be coming up to a reef and I'd hope my breath and go over it and I'd exhale and I'd go on the other side of him was just booking just man we're going so fast and the guy who was our guide stopped to look at a nurse shark in what I couldn't stop I was trying to grab something and I just couldn't we were just going so fast and so I finally got a hold of a reef but I was probably I don't know good 20 30 yards away from them and you blew on by and yeah thanks for your help by the way thank you for that no you did you blew by right you back is shared for part of the story see if I'm not I'm telling you he'll take Hilton he'll take the whole thing hostage so you're posed to stay with your buddy guys ask Trey I know he's a professional snorkel or he might have got certain he's got a diver too so anyway really the heart is that you have a partner for a reason so you stay with your dive buddy and the current is so bad that when you do a backwards roll your mask if you're not hanging on to it just want to have you do it'll come right on the spot and the visibility was all kind of getting murky but this guy said never stopped the crew because it would be equivalent to you going up against a firehose in a pool you're not gonna beat the current of the ocean Michael Phelps couldn't beat the car but Aquaman here I guess one to turn around I did not know make the dive instructor who's saying stop stop there's a shark and people are spinning all their air going ten which is crazy you know what I did was I just got behind a reef and just waiting on ya know there was no way there was no way I could get to so if you get lost you go straight up that's what he did he went straight up to find the boat because because they blew past me I never saw him and I was like man I'm out here all by myself and you know we're 60 feet down and I'm like well I guess I guess my job is over with I got separated from the group so I go to the top a demon little safety stop did everything I'm supposed to do I get up tough water do this boat comes to zipping over and as I'm climbing up out I look past him looking over the shoulder as I'm coming up out and I can see I can see something that I've done a lot of research on since then I didn't know what it was then but I know what it is now something called a white squall okay and it is a microburst and it is a a wall of water that just comes and takes you over and I mean I saw it and I just thought I've never seen anything like that I don't know what that is by the time that I got my tank in and by the time I got out of my BCD I get out of it and look and now I can't see the land and I'm like oh no that thing's fixing to hit us well of course Jamie and all the other people somewhere maybe eight people or 10 people you guys were still under the water and I mean there's not anything there's no way I can like yell at them and say come up let's get in the boat let's get the heck out of here before this storm hits us there was nothing that we could do and guys the storm hit us and I was the only guy in the boat and I was except for the driver of the boat and when it hit us at first it was just rain and it was like Forrest Gump rain it was rain I'm hardcore rain but then after about just a few seconds into the rain and we're just kind of just just sitting there just just getting pounced it's a little bitty tiny boat I could hear something barreling towards us and what I thought I thought oh no it's a big giant boat and it's going to run right into us but it wasn't it was just this roar of this wind and when the wind hit us it went from totally calm water to six to eight foot swells just like that and we went up in the air and came down went up in the air and came down in a third time that we went up in the air we literally caught air underneath us and the boat took off in the air and I mean it's like you know we're gone to see the Wizard and I I didn't know if it was a tornado if it was a waterspout and we're being sucked up into the air and we're literally airborne in this boat and then when it came down it came down vertical and it hit the water just like this and everything in the boat including us went out of the boat I don't have a life jacket on I just got into the boat all the tanks went out of the boat and the only reason why we did I didn't drown is because I hit the motor and they had two twin engines on the back of this boat and I hit it and the driver hit the other one and we we just wrapped ourselves around these things like we're starfish just trying to hang on then it it went completely under the water came up out of the water and hit the hit the water like this and threw us back into the boat instead of throwing us out of the boat but there was nothing inside of the boat anymore and now we're in it and it was it was a train wreck and guys I want to just tell you for 30 to 45 minutes I was absolutely 100% convinced this was fixing to kill me at any given moment this is I'd like there's no way you survived this and I want to just I wanted to say that while I wasn't happy about drowning in the ocean I promise you I felt the peace of God just like I'm with you in this well no matter what happened I didn't have a promise I was gonna get through it I didn't have I didn't hear God say like don't don't worry Tory you got this like no no all God told me it's true I'm here I'm here with you and I went man the Lord is with me so we're we finally get the engines going again and this is again at least a half hour later maybe 45 minutes later of being in this thing where the boat is nearly turning over every couple of seconds and we get the engines going and he's trying to get it into the wind and he's trying to do this and then boom we run right into a big carnival cruise ship and we had gone all the way around to the other side of the island and we didn't even know it and so now we're on the north end of the island if you know anything about Cozumel where all the where all the big ships are and we went right underneath the chain I saw the chain and then boom you know we were there and then some Italian dude opens up the side and starts yelling at us yeah yeah beanie baby BC you know whatever was he saying and I'm like shut up in your face I'm not moving so so so I'm like okay I'm not getting away from this crew ship cause you wanted to be safe you were like the eye on those three words up there meanwhile I'm drowning with a whole group of people so it's all about pastor Troy that's all right I'll tell my partner minute go ahead go ahead oh yeah buddy well why did I go back to get you what what was I thinking so it finally got the wind died down and this guy that was in driving our boat he's like look you know Suns going down and it's dark I mean Ghazi was just dark and because it was a tropical storm I mean it was the tropical heat it hit it had hit their difference no but when we went out lots of boats pretty sunshine it's about 3:30 in the afternoon we came up pitch-black six foot swells no boats no boys and so he wants to he wants to go home the driver does yeah he's like let's go call the Mexican Coast Guard said nobody ever in the history of the planet earth I'm gonna call the Mexican coast guard Mike so I'm like no man we got to go out there we got to go out there and the guy couldn't speak any English at all but he knew one bad word which I'm not gonna repeat and he just kept saying that's a bad word over and over again well not come on man let's go let's go so we went back out there but I went honestly guys that's when I was scared that's when I got scared when we went back out into the storm and so we'd put all of our cellphones in a plastic bag that was in the glove box I opened up the glove box pulled out my phone it's raining so hard I called Jerry Jerry sellers answer the phone and I'm like dude I'm in a bad storm Jamie is still in the water everybody else is still in the water I don't know how we're going to find anybody we can't see anything and it's bad and that's all I got out and then the rain killed my phone that's how that's how hard it was raining so I just took my phone just jumped it it's over and like let's go I lost my flip-flops I'm sorry those are your favorite flip-flops very sorry so so what happen to you what happened to me as you're safely on the boat where were ya man I need hope so as we're as we're going on the dive this was an afternoon dive so typically people don't bring flashlights now if you're Tracy smoker cuz he's kind of a nerdy gadget guy it's fun it's easy to pick on shoot because you're right I go and I get microphone a bit great you understand no mr. smoker is a great diver but typically you wouldn't bring a flashlight on a date i but this guy and i question why you wanting a flashlight it's a day down goes mama look at the crevices I'm thinking you're crazy that we're gonna the drift is gonna be so strong but in saying that we're in the water 47 minutes of coin in my dive computer and we decide to stay under because we're safe there nothing's gonna hit us we can't seize we don't jump here that part what did you say he was I was I say no so we went up and you have a you have a safety sausage they call it a segi sauce it's a red tube that goes up but the waves are crashing over it and there were no boats and we had no other way to communicate so we decide to come up we've got about 1,200 pounds of pressure hang on so the guy says to me I'm scared I'm like other than getting burned this is the scariest time of my life and it was scarier than the prison something well this is it I'm gonna die and I don't make deals with God and I don't like I can't sense that piece like he was I was still like I don't want to die I mean come on I got lots to do whereas you were very peaceful so in saying that I came up and this guy says to me and I do find it very comical and he's with a lady that we didn't know no one knew he'd showed in the group it was just them - he's like well at least you're a fireman okay some a fireman I'm not water rescue out here no problem but it really at that point I thought art this guy's kind dependent on me as as a master scuba diver to pull him through this sometime all right guys we can't see anything but I'm pretty sure that land is this way let's turn backwards let's start kicking and just kick like you've never kicked before well helming this girl are kind of lollygagging around not taking it near serious and I'm eventually leaving them like guys let's go this way this way this way in about 45 minutes into it or 46 minutes the guy has a splash slot and he's been doing this the whole time the whole time and then all of a sudden we hear a motor and we see through the break of the storm pastor Troy my hero here and he's screaming Jamie I saw the light I saw the light I saw the light and not even knowing at that point how biblical that is and I knew and I was crying I was crying so bad just cuz I cries what'd I do it's my feminine side of me so I'm crying cuz I started crying he's like trying to tell you how sickening it is you were trying to show everybody your muscle when you were doing that see that this is the love I get so he really was actually very calm but but what was to me impactful is when we got back I was wanting to talk about it because to me I was pretty far my card this is three times I've survived this is cool some like man let's talk he's like I can't really comprehend what just happened to me this wasn't it this was a big miracle and I need to I need to digest what happened to me where's I'm thinking oh what a wimp come on dude we're but it does it affects different people in different ways but there's over 40 Bible verses that mention Jesus and the storm and I can assure you I'd have been a lot more paying lot more scared had I not known him and not knowing these brought me through storms like that in the past that you got me into by the way I would've been in the storms had I not been with you but that cut my mic off no wow I'm like wait on so here's what he's not telling you is we found everybody they were miles apart yeah there are miles apart they weren't just by each other they were miles apart out and there was a thirteen year old girl this was her open water bath yeah with her mom yeah so this was her first dive in the ocean and that was her experience and when they came up the mom and the 13 year old daughter was holding on to each other and the storm was so bad they still got separated that's how bad the storm and so we found the mama before we found that 13 year old girl and man was she got in the boat and found out that her daughter was still in the water she man she went postal and um it guys I just can't tell you I just I saw a light and on the way to the light we came across every single person ever it's crazy cool guys why okay well guys this I did this last time I got he was still man so so listen I want to I want to close we've we've gone way over and I want to close by saying this remember what I said at the very beginning Jesus is there when you don't know he's there right and then also many times it's Jesus when you don't know it's Jesus there's two things that I walked away from they're so grateful for number one is I'm so glad I know how to find the presence of God and if you don't get anything else out of today if you just get this that you need to develop a skill set for being able to find the manifest presence of God and the second thing the second thing that I was so grateful for was this I was so glad I had somebody to call I was so grateful that I had somebody to call to stop what they're doing and to pray for me and you need that every single one of us in here need this I want it I'm gonna say this broadly to everybody and just say this if you're surrounded by people who do not love you and who do not celebrate you and do not think you're awesome give those people the left-foot a fellowship and find your tribe [Applause] and you find some people who love you and see you as a woman of God or as a man of God and say I'm gonna stop doing what I'm doing right now man and I'm gonna pray for you and you need those kinds of people within your life so there is something guys that that we are doing here as a church is we're actually building a call center here we're actually building troy brand ministries open door church calling center here we're actually doing that and so that the thousands of people that go to open door Church and the untold numbers of people that watch us on TV and also what and listen to us on the radio that when they call that they're actually talking to us right on and we're putting that together and you guys were stabbed with that you guys see miss tabatha this
