Brooklyn Nine Nine - Behind The Scenes

there's so many cop shows on TV right now but there's no comedic ones how is someone not thought of this already this is like the wire with jokes you know explosions chases and all the exciting stuff I've had a lot of stunts and I and I love it like big crashy stunts and there's certainly good ones on Brooklyn is it Andy or is it great editing and a great stunt guy you be the judge audience comedy is so refreshing and so rewarding and so personally fun that I just wanted to be a part of this madcap world Barney Miller is a big inspiration for us they're very real grounded people that had flaws but did their job well there's only one option for me now for my face off with acid and disappear forever we sat and actually talked to some actual police officers who really broke down you know how funny the precinct is really good because there's a lot of time on their hands there's a lot of things that are like not sexy the real-life cop this can be kind of drudgery it's like lots of paperwork and lots of mundane stuff the guy's joke with each other and they're about you know trying to find out what the families are doing and it reminded me of uh you know just being on a team there comedy really comes from a really heartfelt lovely sort of family place and at the same time pokes at everyone in the family and sort of takes the air out of them you'll cry it thank you serve that there's not another comedy on television that has that action stunt element to it [Music] it's a nice thing to be able to use stunts for comedy Jake's always trying to do like the coolest thing possible sometimes in a very inefficient way sorry for dropping in was it cool it felt really cool yeah yeah it's pretty cool first thing I'll say about doing real police work is that if you do it correctly and you're able to kind of by the fact that us goofballs might be cops because we're kind of doing it the right way you can easily take somebody out of the whole world if you put handcuffs on somebody's ankles I've watched what you do for six years it's not that difficult and why you do you're under arrest might be a breeze got a rabbit all right I'll split my meat around back we did get some training but it was like real basic like let's be real we have less than a quarter of the skills that real police officers do well they didn't let me get near a gun Scully Bailey my wife just texted she's leaving me we went to a training ground page it was all set up so that there were all these targets within and you had to like go through the house and clear doorways and that was like real fun fantasy cop moment the own one time they allowed me to go there I froze and couldn't handle it and I ended up shooting myself so he shot like two targets that were civilians idiot Falcon one do we have a go the light is green Tiger one in terms of right really kicking down doors and that kind of stuff it's Boyle and Peralta and their misadventures oh my god it's real life die hard he sees himself as living his life inside of a cop action movie and he's the hero this is my John McClane moment which has pluses and minuses but it's certainly fun when the show meets up with his vision of it because it's fun to watch excuse me sir works the NYPD I just need to ask you on that crazy high shutter speed and let it get a little bit crazy you know have like foot chases down the street or car chases and people getting tackled through boxes it definitely lends another layer to it you're under arrest Punk nobody gets away from Jake brother yeah girls gross Norman Howell who's our stunt coordinator who just does a fantastic job every year every season always trying to top himself we have a moment where Terry and Jake and Boyle do a pretty big fall together into a pit I mean I'm not sure that dancing counts as a stunt but it would be cool if at the end of a dance number like I was supposed to be like ejected from a handhold and I went through a ceiling so that's something I need to talk to Norman how about that when you ask that you know you've done a good job yeah Rosa I look at the stuff they have Jake and Melissa doing and Stephanie it's like riding motorcycles doing this kind of thing it makes it a real sexy kind of comedy it makes it happen [Music] the ensemble it's definitely the biggest selling point of the show they're so freaking talented certain can I say friggin we spend more time together than we do with the whole you don't have big egos you feel safe around them we all really like each other there's only one person I don't like and to me like that's such good odds sometimes I think I might be one of the luckiest girls in the world [Music] this cast came together really smooth and how well we kind of dive with each other everybody has their own lane oh so you're no longer smooshing booties yes that's exactly I was gonna finish my sentence we're so different and yet we need each other like a comedic police Avengers because we all have our own power and I'm the hole you know Jake is Iron Man weirdo we want you knows a little more Kermit all these little characters and how we play off each other creates a very very interesting show we're not really fantastical you know and Captain hole is not breakdancing you know in the office we're trying to play this as ridiculous as it is to play it as real as we possibly can in order to give it some gravitas are you excited about going to town on Daddy's nog Christmas is canceled Charles ruined it I just discovered a new truck too it's called your relationship and I'm high on it tries I managed to back off man Roger that yeah well we'll seem like improv or on the fly stuff is just alts from the writers room the writers are really funny on our show this is a definite code a code it's a code no no I need it out there I'm good born the foundation is terrific so we don't find ourselves fixing or repairing we're also very cautious to get the scripted version because frequently that's the best one check yeah you don't owe me anything you turn and then look up let's see what you can do hold on we crammed in jokes there are jokes in between the jokes Hey if you watch an episode of Brooklyn nine-nine twice the second time you always get something you missed Boyle what else am I talking wildflower picking so we can make her own Cologne nope I was talking bonfires and s'mores but that's my fault for throwing to you now see punk punk punk I said it I'll distract them Hey look at this [Music] how did that not work somebody is clearly gonna screw this up and there could be even a point where you're like smelling this or whatever you know we have what are called fun runs where we inject a lot of goofiness into it points on the corners serving lemonade and you get to keep the jar it's pretty cool yes that's very cool Scully Andy really knows how to deliver the no times he catches me off guard because that's not like a redirection that happens in his delivery that cracks me up every time Scully has a mason jar full of lemonade identical mason jar oh this isn't gonna end well you're not quite sure what's gonna happen Andy might defer to you for something and you have to be on your toes and be ready it be so quick it's really a lot of fun now you would think that putting fish food into lemonade which the doctor strike is on fish in that kind of chemistry you can't fake and the best part of it to me is that it really contributes to a sense of crust even if you try something and it doesn't work and it's bad which happens to me sometimes I lose swagger where I it's fine because this is such a wonderful group of people and I think you get the best work that way just stop talking please until I finish eating my coffee I'm sorry there are times when Andre will just decide he's gonna yell a line with no warning and no logic behind it and it seems to sometimes work you're not fooling anyone why does everyone think that's where a camera would be because the cleavage cloaks the camera with its curves there have been some things that I've improved that I've seen that have made it into the episodes that I'm always like yeah did it they ate my Moose Tracks ice cream that's funny it is a delicious treat for all ages okay it's never boring to me to see Chelsea come up with an alt she's an incredible writer sorb bomb dingo etc that would be one of the names etc the task force sounds like some sort of body spray for hot dudes right bye bye hoor and you really like each other off-camera you can feel it on camera and the whole crew Jake Terry Lula I forget all their other names they always say you can tell you guys like each other and I always say that that's not true that we're just good actors but we're actually not very good actors we just like each other [Applause]
