hello everybody and good day to you all oh we have here a kia optima i think it is yeah this looks like an optima and i have no idea what the customer states because my service riders handed me some keys and said they're waiting pulled us into the shop so i'm just gonna do what i'm told and pull it into the shop and uh we will see what the deal is and what they want to do i don't see any engine lights on or anything i'm assuming they might just be here for maintenance services but uh who knows i'll go ahead and do an inspection on this and see what kind of untold treasures i can turn up that this optima may have in store for us today pull it in pull it in firestone i have found that if you walk up to someone and don't start screeching at them from across the shop they have a better time of understanding uh what you're attempting to communicate the same powering down and popping the hood okay i still don't know what i'm doing right now because the service people are preoccupied by a lady that says uh we didn't rotate their tires so now we got the boss man in the office checking the candid cameras that way we can make somebody eat their words so until i get what i'm doing i'm just gonna do my complimentary services like filling up the blue water and uh doing a courtesy inspection on this here gd ikea let's see what uh what i can find inside of here well let's see you got an air filter kind of dirty-ish looking so far come out [Music] [Applause] yeah that's pretty good that thing's gonna stay no need to sell something that's still functioning as designed because not about that do a belt check uh no cracks on the ribs this thing's in good shape okay quick visual on the brake fluid no debris floating it's transparent-ish that's okay engine coolant's looking good it's at its full mark all right check the wipey wipers they're not uh they're not folded over like that and no tears on the end okay the uh these yellow dots fun fact those are uv indicators those things turn yellow once uh once this has been exposed to enough ultraviolet it's supposed to be an indicator that the uh uh the the blade should be replaced based on uv exposure but these seem to be okay so far so we're gonna leave those alone let's go ahead and move it on up okay turns out my hypothesis was partially correct uh they're here for a maintenance service and uh my work order says diagnosed air conditioner so uh we'll see what's going on with that however i did not get a complaint on the matter it just says diagnosed air conditioner for half hours of labor time so i'll just have to operate said system and make my own determination on uh on what the problem could be let us extract this engine oil filtration canister yeah it's getting the oil on me gross i took the wrong line of work to hate engine oil all righty some oil on the gasket all right yeah i just did a check for a leftover gasket up top and it is not present so let us uh install this new filter and cutic a little bit of housekeeping in here that's how you know you did a good job an examination of this drain plug yields a uh flattened and distorted crush washer i'm going to change this thing right here pluck this old one out without stabbing a hole in my thingy come on why no way oh i saved it with my foot wow that was wild wow this is uh getting to be kind of dangerous come off oh seriously you gotta be kidding me it's like so smashed on there it won't even won't even come loose see now it's personal i will win you gotta be kidding me look at that not even cool okay it's time to escalate now like i said it's getting personal okay time for the side cuts of doom i will defeat it with brute force and sheer technician rage come oh god it's just melting wow i thought i was good at my job i can't even get a washer off of a drain plug they're shopping no they're not they're not even close to sharper uh-huh no they're not 20 20. look i already won so it's cool wow i'm gonna love the background of your video okay time to find a new one all right i probably should have checked for this before i went through all that but i do have a new one oh sometimes i'm not so much of a forward thinker as i'd like to believe i'm gonna wrench this down slightly tighter than i normally would because it is a fresh new crush washer and i would like to make sure it is properly crushed now let's see one more tug click good all righty now that all that part's handled i'm gonna drop this down throw some oil in it and we'll get to the the nitty-gritty of what's going on which is gonna be that ac system issue pumping in the oil okay so this reminds me of a a time when i screwed up really really bad long long ago i was still in high school my first job and i was working on a volvo doing oil change and i recall having been rushed or i was cutting corners something and i left the spout in the top of the engine it was a dual overhead cam volvo and i went around to the front grabbed the key started the engine uh so i thought in order to uh to prime the filter and everything to recheck the level the nozzle got caught on a cam lobe and i snapped the timing belt cleaned right off so me being the 18 year old that i was i was like oh i must have just stopped everything so i pulled the thing back out went back around tried to start it again and it's just cranking and cranking and cranking and cranking and the no compression sound that you hear of a cranking engine is is unmistakable if you know what it sounds like all of a sudden the master tech comes running over he's like what did you do and i'm going nothing i just changed the oil and he's like yeah what did you do i know you did something right what did you do and i was like well i was changing the oil and i left the left the oil spout in the top of the engine and he the guy just threw his hands up and walked off wouldn't found the manager they both come rushing over and they're pulling it apart checking it out taking covers off and sure enough broke the time about cleaning right off the engine so yeah about an hour later i was uh headed to the doctor's office for the uh we would like a reason to fire you drug test and uh about a day after that i i left that job because i knew there was no coming back after that one they were they were not happy with me but i learned to uh to not skip steps because that's how you break someone's engine unfortunately a timing belt replacement solved the problem and uh i figured i would no i learned to not do that ever again so that was one of the one of the worst screw-ups i ever had i just had to give it away let's see what we got here all right at five let's start it and check it again uh-oh locked out where new there we go oh man i can't i can't get in the lift is in the way of the door okay i'm just gonna i'm gonna reach one hand on the brake one hand on the starting the engine button okay pressure is coming up it's good okay let's go check level and then we'll uh evaluate this ac system here i've already taken the liberty of attaching the machine but i'm not going to do anything until i can get a pressure readout from it [Music] unimas right between the uh the marks perfect okay ac running pressures are okayish that's a little high yeah 67 pounds on the low side that's too much odd okay okay high sides a little low also throw in the thermal meter here and uh see what kind of temperatures are coming out of the center vents get in there go into your new home all right we'll give that a minute and see what happens all right so we're what 60 68 degrees on the fahrenheit scale that is slightly underperforming i'm just gonna give this some rpms real quick and i'm looking over at my gauges and i'm seeing about about 190 maybe 200 on the high side i don't know if you guys can see from this far right what i'm gonna do um i'm suspecting and uh they also mentioned uh finally after i talked to the advisor people about they also mentioned that this condition was intermittent uh sometimes it was cold sometimes it won't be cold i'm suspecting that the expansion valve the txb or thermal expansion valve which is an automatic temperature controlled spring-loaded valve i'm suspecting that that's getting stuck open or has an internal leak and it's bypassing so it's not creating the pressure differential between the high side and the low side and that's what effectively makes your cold so i think that based on what i'm seeing with those numbers there and how i've seen them change uh including the and the customer description of the issue i believe that the txv is getting stuck so what i'm gonna do is evacuate this down just to make sure it's not low on a charge or anything and uh i will uh i'll recommend they replace that txp if i find that there's not a low charge issue going on here which i don't think i will but uh you never know so let's power this down and start the evac process from the machine and we'll see what uh what results we get once it weighs the recovered amount of refrigerant recover do not save all right i may have speculated wrong it's a little low on its charge i think this should be about 1.5 uh maybe 1.4 pounds because according to the sticker it should have 650 grams so before i start guesstimating on failed parts i should probably inspect for a leak i did hear some some action when i uh when i pulled one of these caps off as you've probably gathered from previous videos these service valves always tend to have a leak usually not a very huge one but they're over time it's enough to bring the system down off of its full charge i'm gonna grab a light and inspect in here through any for any dive it may be on the condenser and i'll just give the system a good visual look over before i uh make a recommendation i'm not going to fire the parts canon at this since i've got a low charge i'd have to reinstall a new charge and then re-evaluate before uh before proceeding to suggest parts replacement i need a 10 mil i have to i want to pull the cover off of this txb back here and uh check check for any die or leaks that could be there at the o-rings it's a that's a common failure that i found on some of these uh these hyundais and kias and whatnot come here okay i don't see any dye here looks pretty good usually when a leak is present you'll see some like oil or even presence of green dye the ultraviolet reactive dye and i don't see any nearby so i'm going to rule that out as as being the leak the compressor looks similar there's no oil or die on that the the lines are all looking pretty good especially at the joints and let's take a peek i don't know if you all can see it in there at the condenser make sure i don't see any uh any dye around those areas which uh preliminarily i do not okay i'm gonna suggest we replace the valves in this and uh and recharge it then reevaluate actually i'm not even going to suggest anything that's just i'm just going to do it and then tell them about it later okay system's discharged i'm going to go ahead and yank those valves out come out okay let's go inspect these a little closer hmm not terrible the o-ring is intact on that one this one's a little smashed here okay jokes let's dig out some replacement cores i will uh and we'll pull that system into a vacuum and put a full known charge into it these are good and then we'll reevaluate performance from there i just can't stop all right okay it pulled out just over one pound and spec is roughly 1.4 pounds so it was slightly low let's go ahead and vacuum this down and i'll be back when this is done the reason that we pull these down into a vacuum is to evacuate any moisture that may have entered while the system was open ambient air carries with the moisture and moisture freezes within the system and you don't want ice floating around in your ac system i'll just set the machine to grams and i'll go off the higher value so it's gonna be 650 grams plus 25 so that's 675 grams i can do math this time that's in reference to me uh screwing up a math problem on a similar video a few weeks ago oops kind of embarrassed okay let's set this on grams kilograms as close as we're gonna get that's gonna be zero zero six seven five and uh let's let this machine do its thing we'll check back in a minute in the meantime i can stick this cover back on i don't need this off anymore if it goes on there [Music] [Music] click okay charge is going in [Music] all right charge is installed i'm just going to compensate what's left in the hoses into the system and let's go start this and uh see what kind of performance we get out of it now okay stopping the engine and let's fire up this ac and go check on the pressures i just pulled this up on google i don't have a kia uh ikea provided chart uh we're just over 85 degrees today i don't know if you guys can see this or not but we're about 86 degrees outside today we're on the low end of our low side pressure at 42 45 psi and our high side pressure is also on the low side so it's it's really tough to say um i think what i'm gonna do is pull my thermometer out and get an actual ambient temp for inside the shop because a five degree ambient temp uh difference puts our pressures in suspect this extra five degrees puts us out of spec so let's uh let's figure this out for sure by actually measuring outside temperature actually since uh since my analog gauge is in the car i'll just take a measurement of something that's outside okay that says 91 let's see what the wall says 92 all right so we're gonna i'm gonna go with the 90. we are slightly low on our pressures let's go see what kind of temperature we get uh inside of the car by the way that chart does not factor in any kind of humidity okay we're we're about 50 degrees it doesn't factor in any humidity uh that's why i said i was looking for a kia chart but before we do anything regarding parts replacement let's test this at 2 000 rpms that is where the spec is supposed to be and i'm going to jump back outside and put you guys on the gauges so you can see where our our pressures are at at 2000 rpm [Music] [Music] okay i think what i saw was roughly around 200 and uh maybe maybe in the high 30s i'll check the footage later on to see exactly what it was but uh back inside holding 2000 and we're still at around 50 degrees that's a that's a wee bit high i kind of want to see 42 44 degrees so we're we're a little underperforming yeah i can see here the gauges i'm at about 220 on the high side now 38 40 maybe 36 on the low side so the pressures are in spec holding 2000 um we're still at 50. let's make sure i don't have this uh okay yeah that's good yeah it came down to 48. yeah kind of a tough call okay what i'm gonna do i took a minute to think about it what i'm gonna do is see here now we're good now we're good look at that about a minute of uh holding we're down to 44 44 degrees on the center vent um i'm gonna suspect that there's a possibility that that expansion valve intermittently sticks again that's based on just what they said but um i'm not gonna make any kind of a parts replacement recommendation at this time the system is uh it's performing within the specs of that generic chart that i pulled up like i said i don't have a kia chart available to me those charts would factor in humidity and a couple other factors that i could use to uh to compare my actual measurements with that being said i've got an improvement in performance just based on filling the system up to its uh to its specified quantity and i'm not seeing any odd action anymore out of those gauges over there so i'm going to call this as success i am going to document present my findings for the customer because should they experience a no ac event in the near future i want to circle back to uh circle back to that um that txb that thermal expansion valve being a potential problem as for the other hard components of the system i don't believe i've got any uh any massive leaks or anything i did a visual inspection on it and uh didn't see any indicators that a leak was present um the system's performing as it should right now and i'm not seeing any additional evidence that that expansion valve is going to give us a problem so based on everything uh what i'm just going to do is kind of prep the customer for a possibility of replacing an expansion valve in the future but i i don't think that that's really necessary at this point so all that being said i'm going to i'm going to call this one good and go get the machine disconnected from the car let's get that off and that and always put the caps back on we do not want to introduce contaminants into the system and if these are full of dust and dirt or whatever next time someone hooks up to it that stuff could get inside and uh cause some internal damage and that would be bad all right this one's done uh the customer appreciates uh the knowledge that i have bestowed upon them and uh they're glad that i didn't sell them a compressor or some silliness like that shoe i already got my my gauge out of here this one's all good to go i just need to throw an oil sticker in it and uh top off the tires and we're dunsey but in the interest of time i'm gonna go ahead and cut this one off right now so all that being said i'd like to thank everybody here for watching i truly do appreciate it i want to ask you that if you like this video or if you made it this far do me a favor and tap you tap that thumbs up button that's what really gets the uh youtube algorithm chooching and that's what gets my content out to other potential viewers if you didn't like this video or think i did something wrong please feel free to let me know about that in the comment section down below again all that being said one more time thank you guys and as always don't forget have a great day well i was wrong i'm pulling this back in this car is staying the night so it's got uh no reason to go out in the parking lot it can just stay right here tonight so powering down again see you guys see you later little break here i'm going home
