hi everybody good day this morning i got a super cool super blue hyundai uh veloster or velociraptor something like that uh this thing is turbine powered the customer states that they just had an engine put in it and now it is bucking and surging or something while driving so i'm gonna take this uh take this little roadster on the road and see uh see what it does oh i might have to go very far it's misfiring really bad hmm okay well i'm gonna go drive it anyway to re uh try to recreate the conditions that they described come on yeah it kind of doesn't wanna it doesn't want to run i i don't know i'm tempted to bring my scan tool with me yeah i'll drive it first we'll scan tool it later seems kind of smooth off idle but down at idle it's definitely chuggy chugging oh and it has no power this is wide open throttle 20 miles per hour oh yeah i'm i'm wide open throttle with this thing and it's not going anywhere time to go back to the shop this is bad okay now that i'm out of the public motorways let's do this again wide open throttle look at that nothing second gear nope it goes nowhere all right i believe we have determined what their complaint is now let's determine what is causing said complaint and again they said they just had a new engine put in this and uh this is this is what they got so i'm curious to curious to learn what's going on here but i'm gonna find out all right let's see what kind of untold treasures laid before us in the engine junkyard easium all right okay well first glance nothing's staring at me in the face here except for that junkyard number scanning and we're gonna scan everything yeah whatever i haven't done anything okay here we go oh my god turbo under boost yep rich at higher loads sure misfires misfires misfires what else okay all right so i've kind of just been scrolling through all the live data that i see here i'm giving some throttle inputs as i'm going through the data i'm just watching everything react to my throttle input i'm not really seeing much that's sticking out to me at this time the next step would either be to you know pull up these code definitions and then follow through the diagrams for each one of these codes but i'm fairly certain that everything the symptoms and the problems that this having is is going to be one thing not seven different things you know so it these are all symptom codes it's telling me hey i have misfires on all my cylinders i'm i'm randomly misfiring i'm running very rich and my my turbo is not providing any boost now if you don't have a good clean combustion your turbo is never going to spool up and it's the compressor is never going to be able to drive any air so naturally you will have an under boost condition so there's there's nothing here that's that's really i think going to help me out um i may end up having to dialogue this uh what i would call an analog way and that's make sure that the the base components of this this vehicle are functioning like they should be what i mean by that is based on how this thing feels and how it's been running it does not appear to the engine's not not breathing it's having a hard time just staying alive right now what i'm thinking is this thing may have a damaged or clogged up exhaust system probably the catalytic converter so i'm gonna i'm gonna check on that right now all right so i'm around back to the exhaust and i have a healthy helper inside he's gonna give me some throttle nothing here okay go ahead and throttle it up please look at that this thing is choking itself to death go up to three thousand three thousand rpms and we've got barely any flow here look at that yep go ahead and bring it back down we're good diagnosis confirmed okay i'm going to scooch this thing forward a little bit and uh and get it on the rack and we're going to take a peek from the bottom side see what's going on let's see here there we go initiating engine shutdown protocol now turbocharged velociraptor there it is so what we have here is a laser thermal meter it'll fire a little laser out of the front of it now you can see and the probe will take a temperature reading of whatever you're pointing at and store it on the display and this is what we're going to use to determine if this converter is clogged or not because it will be hotter on one side than on the other side so we'll start with this side of this secondary converter and that's uh 220 degrees front side is 277 so we have a decent temperature differential here on number two over here on number one we're 237 degrees and let's get a good view there we go how about there and 353 303 let's see what else 240 now i've had this thing parked for a little while so it has started to cool off but let's see yeah 320 on the front and we're 270 250 on the back so this is a confirmed diagnosis this thing has a clogged catalytic converter i'm going to recommend if we replace the upstream converter the first one and depending on what i find when i take this apart we will determine if the second one should also be replaced or not it's unlikely that both of them are damaged but i don't ever want to back myself into a corner without taking things apart finding out but they're uh they're not paying me to do all that they're just paying me to find out what the problem is and if they would like me to start disassembling things then uh you know the bill has to start going up well so we uh we estimated the cost of replacing this converter and our velociraptor owner has declined service i guess he's going to take this back to the junkyard where they fixed the engine and um and i guess try to hit them up for the repair i'm going to park this thing back it out put it over there in the lot and [Music] procedure yeah i've i've got a sneaky suspicion that somebody put an engine in this guy's car for the same thing and he got it back and it's still doing the same thing because of a misdiagnosis that's that's what i'm thinking is going on here um i can't really confirm such things because my my information that was provided to me is somewhat limited but uh my intuition is telling me that that's that's the case with this this motor vehicle anyway like i said they have declined a repair from me and from my facility so i'm assuming they're gonna go ahead and take this back to uh to wherever wherever it came from and and kind of hit them up for for some warranty repair or something anyway i'd like to thank everybody for watching this video i appreciate you guys being here i was glad to be here and i was glad to uh be able to
