[Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] hi everyone and good day to you we've got here is a 2015 dodge ram the customer states that the headlights and the fog lights are inoperative at all times okay uh-huh all right well i'm gonna take this thing for a ride check it out mechanically and then i'll come back and diagnose this uh inoperative headlight issue okay let's see if these headlights work now that we're out of the sun okay headlights on fog lights on indicators indicate that the lights are on let's go see if they're on okay i got fog lights don't have headlights okay hello jimmy this is interesting now i do have headlights okay and turning the fog lights back on reveals that the fog lights also work again okay time to pull up a wiring diagram and see what's in common with high beams and low beams because at one point i had neither one okay time to look up some diagrams and we want diagrams and electrical digigrams no i'm okay all right so what we see here is that this box represents the body control module and the body control module contains all of the driver circuits for high beams low beams and i believe fog lights are listed in there so that is our common component that involves all of these lights and i'm going to suspect that this unit is faulty so i'm going to break up the scan tool look for some dtc's and we'll move forward from there come on scan tool we got work to do plug it in plug it in okay so while i'm in here with the scan tool i'm gonna leave the headlights on i'm gonna go ahead and turn on the high beams just to draw some current through the bcm uh what i'm interested in finding out is if the drivers in the bcm heat up with current usage and then that closes or shuts down the vcm and i'm also going to look for some trouble codes because if the bcm is losing a ground or it's losing a power supply it should set a dtc or some of the other modules should set a communication dtc stating they have lost com with the bcm but we'll see cm codes and here we go look at that left front low beam control short to ground fog light short to ground uh marker lamp short to battery or open okay so something's going on here now it is time for coffee okay i found a note inside of the work order it says led brights out fog and low beams go out sometimes no experience with installation so placement may be wrong so what i've just found out is that this fella has installed hid or or led bulbs in this truck and i believe that this is overloading the driver circuits in the body control module so what i'm going to do is shut it down i'm going to let the bcm cool back off a little bit and i'm going to plug in an incandescent bulb into the sockets and then run those and see if those create this exact same condition if they do then we know that the problem is not the bulbs and we'll have to continue to diagnose this so let me get this panel off and take a peek at those light bulbs in there [Music] i cannot see [Music] all right and there's one inside of that panel [Applause] ah all right all right i'm going to disconnect these and install a regular bulb yeah this stuff's all pretty hot right here i'm gonna install another bulb see if the condition repeats itself all right so it looks like these this is part of the factory harness which is part of the headlamp assembly and then you just plug in these leds and their drivers and they just run off that these are kind of cool actually they got they got little fans in them yeah i mean they have a bit of gravity here they don't feel super trinesium regardless i'm going to have to install regular light bulbs and see what happens okay so i have temporarily installed factory specified light bulbs and i'm going to reassemble this and then run these lights and then we're going to see if the driver shuts down for these here light bulbs standby oh things that are hard to do one-handed flick and i'm just gonna temporarily position that right where it goes and we're going to pull out the passenger side and do the same thing okay round two all right ready set nascar fail just lost the race [Applause] cannot get it out okay got another 9005 um okay i know maybe it goes on this one silly ray maybe not it does go on this one here found one more that's gonna at fit get the plug is it gonna fit here now yeah this one is a 9006 and the other other one i used was the 9012 and i do believe there's a subtle difference yeah this one's not going to fit in the mount so i'm just going to kind of jam it in there for testing purposes there we go all right i'm gonna install this one back on the truck and operate high beams and low beams and see if they shut down after a little bit of run time all right time to engage exterior illumination and the survey says we have lights all right let's talk yourself we'll let these run for a while and make sure they stay on and we'll see what the customer wants to do about it all right these light bulbs have been running strong for about 10 minutes now i just got back from reporting what i have found i have determined that those led units are overheating the driver in the body control module that's a little computer inside it's overheating the headlight driver and then that driver is shutting down which is disabling the headlights i don't think that they've damaged the bcm yet however that particular configuration eventually will cause some problems if he continues to attempt to run those those fancy led light bulbs so unfortunately he's going to have to live with these or i can possibly build a like a custom harness with a relay pack in order to get the load off of the bcm and put it onto a set of relays that would be quite time consuming and a little lengthy but um it's something i'd be willing to do because obviously this guy wants to wants to keep his his led lights so let you guys know what i find out the owner really wants to keep his led bulbs so what i'm going to do is install relays [Music] each individual light bulb is going to get its own relay for a total of four after doing this the bcm will no longer power the light bulbs it will only be powering the relays so here's the pigtail side of the relay the center wire is not used so we can lob that off and what we're left with is power ground switch and circuit i plan on using one single wire to power both of these so i can go ahead and tie these power wires together right now [Music] i have to apologize i seem to have lost the footage of me installing the first relay on the first headlight bulb what you see here is the installation of the second relay what i'm doing is tying the two power wires together so that i only have to run one power supply wire to the headlamp assembly crimp it to make sure [Music] both power wires are joined together since i only need to ground the coil side of the relay i'm going to use the factory headlight ground so [Music] so okay so this is the power wire coming from the body control and i want to now use this to turn on the relay so that's going to get connected to the signal circuit [Music] so powers ground signals and this is now our circuit load wire so one more connection you can test it out there we go [Music] okay that one's in let's plug this into the truck and see if it works okay let's chuck all that away all right i'm going to want to reuse this cover so i need to drill a hole in it to run the power supply wire through which is going to go straight to the battery okay i don't have any yellow shielded connectors so i'm gonna make them so i'm gonna make [Music] so i will make one shielded with featuring [Music] [Music] so [Music] that's our power wire that feeds both relays tight squeeze [Music] okay now we have a headlight with a long angle wire hanging out of it so our power wire is going to run in and up and we're going to attach the other end right to the battery post and up through that little hole [Music] okay let's power it up plug it in and see if it's uh see if it's gonna choose so okay trim the excess looks good i'm just gonna strip this in bare and connect it right now just to make sure everything's still working before i finalize this side so okay it's powered so now the headlights powered both relays are powered from the battery it's connected let's test it see if it works success [Music] she's all right i will bolt this back in with compound wobbly bits that far center's way down there go on almost there got it [Music] um so next i need to put this connector on this power wire connect that to the battery supply a little bit of heat shrink so uh hmm oh foreign okay so just to prove that these lights are in fact okay just to prove that these lights in fact do get their power from okay just to prove that the lights do in fact get their power from the battery at this point and not through the body control module we'll see that one's turned on the headlights are on this one is off and i'm going to connect this to battery positive and voila okay time to build the second relay pack on the passenger side headlight i already have the bulbs reinstalled i just got to do the same thing cut the wires splicing the relay pack run a power wire we'll be good to go [Music] okay time for the circuit wire that actually powers the bulb do one more splice so hmm okay so i'm just gonna bundle these up a little bit with a zip tie so that they stay organized all right let's power wire for the first relay and here's the power wire for the second relay so [Music] i know again since this is gonna be a hot lead i'm gonna use the female spade connector and then i'll put some heat shrink over it i'm gonna do a second cramp on this though felt weird so uh there install a little bit of tape just to make sure that connection stays insulated so so [Music] all right we got a relayed headlight assembly let's get this plugged in and wire the battery power and make sure everything functions look at the same that we did on this side we'll run it up and into the engine compartment that'll give me space to route it over to the battery [Music] so [Music] [Music] i think i'll run it along the firewall and i'll attach it to this loom here that runs across and then i can meet up with this wire and they'll join together of course at the battery but before i do all of that i'm going to hook this up right now and test it to make sure that high beams and low beams all function and that lamp as well as this lamp stick it in here all right logan [Music] and high beam we are good and to prove that it's on the relays take it off bam no more light however i'm gonna connect it here because this is a fused a fused connection point and i'd rather use it use a fuse i don't have an inline fuse connector that i can use for this so i'm just gonna have to use this one [Music] [Music] [Music] so i used two because i wanted it red but i didn't have a red one that was the right size so i used the yellow to shim so to speak the red [Music] that'll do okay i'll let this thing uh just kind of run for a while and make sure it stays working and we'll go from there okay it's been about 15 minutes or so these are still working so i'm going to finish up put that clip back in cover that okay see if i still uh have battery power all day long all right flash and pass high beams excellent everything is working okay this custom wiring job is a super success and i'm very happy with it this guy's headlights aren't going to shut off while he's driving anymore and i'm gonna call this one a job well done no independence okay final thoughts on that fuse job i did back there because i i feel like i'm going to get the treatment in the comment section over that my thoughts are i didn't want to use one of those cheapo inline blade fuse connectors because these are for headlights high beams and low beams i wanted to make sure that that connector wasn't going to get hot now i've seen it happen before when when using light bars i feel good about connecting that to the primary diffuse block fuse which was 120 views because that's still going to give that circuit some short protection for example if the wire were to become shorted to ground it'll still protect that circuit in that sense but it won't be a weak enough fuse where it will become open just during driving or randomly or or even over time because the idea is to still protect the circuit yet have a reliable power supply for these headlights i'd like to thank everybody for watching this video i really appreciate it i know it ran a little long but this was a tedious painstaking job that i wanted to make sure it was as good as i could do it so if you guys like what you saw here today hit that like and subscribe button let me know what you thought about this repair in the comments down below and as always have a great day see you later dodge [Music]
