hi everybody it is slow as molasses today i've uh it's 1 30 or so and i've managed to do an oil change and a flat repair today so due to my insatiable need to keep myself busy i went ahead and ordered some shock absorbers for my personal truck so i think i'm gonna back this into the shop and i will uh i will do that today because i have nothing else to do i've been wanting to replace these shocks for a while this thing rides kind of rough especially in the back end it's a it's a one ton suspension and if there's not a load in the back of it the thing really has a habit of beating me up and what i ended up ordering was a set of uh rancho 5000 series and they come equipped with wobbly bits first things first i need to get this wire off here [Music] a little bit of snippy snip action then i can reinstall this dust boot and i'll go down down underneath and uh get these installed the install on these is fairly easy especially on the rears there's just two 18-millimeter bolts this part's not easy though come on get on there there and then just zip tie down make that super tight okay memory serves these are held on with just a pair of 18 millimeter bolts so let's see if i'm right no way those are 21s i'm very very wrong okay now that i've gone ahead and uh got the right size tools out i can uh i can get these shock absorbers off yeah so these rears are super simple to do it but the fronts might give me a little bit more grief we'll see we'll see how they work out i was really mostly concerned about the rear because that's where my ride harshness is coming from [Music] here's a cool little trick watch this you get get your wrench behind it use the threads and then you use the wrench against the bolt head to pull it out okay we're looking up now from the bottom of the shock absorber i know what you're thinking why aren't you on a lift and the reality is is this trucks weighs about 6 500 pounds it's huge and i just don't feel like uh setting the lift and racking it up and plus i can i can lay in the ground a little bit and just kind of relax i'm really taking an easy day today like i said it's slow and i never had a chance to really get motivated this morning all right [Music] cool see how uh how stiff these things are not bad i can pull them down by hand but hey look at that they don't uh they don't want to go back up yeah these are spent i uh i speculate these are original and this trucks go 180 000 on it maybe i'm curious to see how these ranchos perform i've never uh i've never owned rancho shocks before but i do know they come oe on a lot of the upfit gms like the high country and uh the denali's and a couple of the other 4x4 options like the at4s i think those come with ranchos now not that that really means anything i was upset too because i wanted to get the premium ones the the 7000 series but nobody had them in existence not even the warehouses so i just kind of had to settle for the the 5000 series they did have some 5500 series for the fronts uh but i didn't want to put a higher quality on the front than on the back i wanted to match them because i'm weird like that the fitment here is kind of tight enough i might be able to just do this without using a pry bar or anything let's see see if i can pull this off oh maybe almost oh i lost the nut where'd it go where's my bolt crap got it it was behind me oh i lost it again come on there that's the spot cool i think and i just gotta reach up and get the top bolt now and this side's done ah okay repeat for the passenger side and then i can move up to the front all right we're on the passenger side now looking looking backwards because this shock absorber is on the front side of the axle you know that's another thing that bothers me about shocks on rear axles is they'll put one on the front side and one on the back side i know it kind of doesn't matter but it's not symmetrical and that that's annoying to me i just i don't like how they do that does anyone know why i've never been able to actually get a reason why why the manufacturers do that because it seems the symmetry would be best oops yeah if anybody can offer some insight on that down in comet land i would i would be grateful to learn [Music] see how yeah that's pretty weak too yeah looking it's stuck yeah these these things are garbage i'm glad they're uh they're going away i'm curious for the test drive to see uh see how well these perform once i get the new ones in okay we're looking up at the top of this one yeah i found more uh more alabama clay that's where this truck originally came from was uh somewhere in alabama the guy uh the guy that bought it i think he bought it new and hauled hay or horses or something with it [Music] it even still has the uh the gooseneck hitch which i have yet to use maybe when my current flatbed trailer is no longer usable i'll i'll upgrade to a gooseneck [Music] come on [Music] sweet come on new one okay now let's see if this will go in with the same amount of ease as the other one did i think it will i missed it pry bar i'm i'm back with a pry bar now i can get in here and maneuver this properly i think that's good all right [Music] oh big [Music] okay that's two down two to go okay you guys hang out down here i'm gonna go ahead and turn the truck around nose it in and do the uh we'll do the front next [Music] all right now we're flipped around we can uh see what's going on with these front shocks these should be fairly easy also one big bolt on the bottom and then uh up top they've got that stud that comes through this mount so i'm gonna pull these studs off first and then uh get the bottom bolt and then we'll drop them out from there but first we need lube all righty these are gonna go one of two ways this bolt's gonna come off no problem or it's gonna be a real pain in the butt and i'm gonna have to cut it off i'm hoping for option a yeah there's not much rust on this stuff this should kind of be a problem angry pliers time to escalate reintroducing the angry pliers for shameless sales pitch amazon link time yeah do you see how the whole shock body is rotating i'm going to try to hold these with the pliers and keep that bottom half stationary so that the nut can come off not happening tighten them down some yeah there we go excellent that's gonna be just fine hey these pliers are great the harder you squeeze the tighter they grip actually i should say the harder you push the tighter they grip the squeezing action really doesn't uh affect it much it's the leverage that you induce when pushing on the primary handle that tightens the grip on them it's kind of like an old-school pipe wrench and i call them angry because just how aggressive they are with their their grip and their leverage mechanism [Music] cool let's go down below and get that bottom bottom bolt out due to the space down here being a little bit more limited on these fronts i'm gonna use uh an impact gun on that rather than the air ratchet electric ratchet [Music] come out there she is let's see if these are any good but let's give it a push that's fully collapsed and there it's just sitting there yep these are junk too all right let's go fetch the new one and get this installed and that's the that's my new unit see if i can see where the hole goes up there i think i got it yep that's it ooh i don't have shoulder space a little more no pry bar come on oh almost i almost had it it was lined up i just couldn't keep it straight this would be a lot easier with the wheel off but i'm not gonna go i'm not gonna do it yeah got it sweet all right almost halfway done with this one i'm gonna do the top upper grommet and the uh and bolt it in and i can finally get that uh i can get the passenger side one done and we will go for a test drive who almost dropped that not cool yep now something like this shouldn't be tightened down all the way what i like to do is just uh torque these until uh it begins to squish the rubber grommets and uh make sure the threads are fully engaged and i'm gonna have to get a wrench to hold this uh top of the shock absorber right here i don't have um let me get a better view i won't need to use pliers to grip this one because there's kind of like a bolt welded to the top of this one so i need to grab one more wrench let's see if that's also a 19 survey says yes i called those grommets before i believe the proper term would be pushing i don't think it's actually a grommet by definition you see here how it's starting to to compress i don't want to go too far because it'll just damage it over time but i think right about there is good and the threads are fully engaged i'll leave this one here like that for now i can always revisit it later all right guys last one we're in the home stretch oh almost almost didn't need the pliers oh almost done and i'm growing impatient now get my hand cool okay down below again and we're on the last one huh this cv axle's got a small leak going on with it not bad for 180 000 nothing to really fuss about i don't think there she comes let's see if this shocks any good or if it's junk too compress it yeah junk all right i already got bushing and the uh the big washer on this next one here there goes through the hole [Music] i can't i can't really get the right leverage on that one to compress it [Music] [Music] oh no no no don't slip out that was that was almost perfect what was happening don't slip stay stay in there i'm losing it i'm losing it oh [Music] oh my my bolt is far away [Music] here's the bowl i got it i reached it oh i'm feeling the burn and i lost the lost position i'm gonna go inside and turn the wheel to give myself some more clearance here okay maybe that this will give me the space and leverage that i need yes i think so sweet should have thought of that last time [Music] cool one more nut it's done so so again i'm just watching this bushing here and when it starts to compress it's about where i plan on stopping a couple more turns that's good uh-oh i just found a screw in my tire let's see if it's leaking i hope not i hope it's just a short one if it's not leaking it was close let's throw some tire lube on that see if it bubbles right on i'm off the hook no leak cool all right let's go for a ride and uh see how this feels i know you guys can't feel it but i can and i believe i have the vocabulary to describe it air conditioning please all of it so back it all out i'm going to try to be as objective as possible here and not engage in the placebo effect and uh we have a speed bump right there i'm gonna hit that like i normally would and see if i feel a difference not bad it uh it navigated that speed bump fairly well let's keep going let's try a couple maneuvers feels decent i don't know i i almost think i detect a slight bit more body roll than uh than what i'm used to of course i could be looking for something wrong too feels okay here's a here's some rough pavement up ahead i'll hit that at speed and see what that feels like yeah right up here all right that was that was smoother than usual i i run that spot over every day when i leave and that felt much better so there's there has been an improvement here so i'm good with that okay let's get out on the road oh you guys caught me again the seat belt thing click it or ticket oh and i was i checked my mileage um for the sales guy so he could write up my work order and i was wrong i'm at 196 thousand not 180 so uh it's uh this thing's getting up there so yeah overall i i do believe there is a uh a ride quality improvement with these uh these new shock absorbers and i like them so they they get the thumbs up for me speaking of thumbs up i'd like to ask you guys now if you like this video if you do me a favor and have you tap that thumbs up button that is what uh lets the algorithm know that i'm doing a good job and it helps me get the content out to other potential viewers and of course if you didn't like today's video please let me know about that in the comments section down below also down below like i mentioned if you're interested in a pair of those uh of those angry pliers you can find the exact same plier that is not snap-on branded for nearly half the price there is a link in the video description to uh to amazon and it'll take you to the page where those pliers can be purchased so i'd like to thank everybody here for watching like i said i truly do appreciate it and i also need to remind you to not forget to have a great day see you guys okay one more good set of bumps here in the parking lot very good this feels nice i'm super happy with it power down
