good day to you youtube and hello this is a 1997 third econoline work van and i can't get in the door customer states that uh the engine backfires and makes weird noises and would like this diagnosed i guess the story is is they've been at a loyal customer at another shop and they've been trying to diagnose this issue for a very very long time and they keep uh firing parts at it out of the parts cannon and they still cannot make the engine run properly so i am going to do my do the best of my ability to diagnose this uh this particular vehicle so let's see what it's uh what it's doing here keys okay interesting look at here when you when you key it on i don't see the check engine light come on to self-test i wonder what that's about all right well scan tool let's see if it's going to talk to it and uh we'll see what's going on here okay it's been uh 30 seconds of run time and it's already starting to get very misfire like and uh running rough so let's uh let's pull up some trouble codes and start with that okay p0171 and p0174 system two lean on bank one and bank two so she's running i'm gonna hypothesize here that the check engine light bulb has been removed or disabled somehow due to the the warning indicator not being turned on because uh according to these trouble codes this indicator should be on pro tip disconnecting the light bulb or putting electrical tape over the check engine light does not fix the problem let's access the bonnet okay put the hood up here i've got fairly limited visibility for what's going on inside of this thing there's a van in the way between me and the engine so let's start getting some parts out of the way we'll pull this uh intake ducting out and see what's in here ah more [Music] all right that's a bad sign it's got the duct tape repair on the intake and that is between the mass airflow yeah that surface right here on this uh air filter housing i bet you there's a leak right here somewhere yeah we're gonna have to work on that first that's not gonna work oh and i said duct tape that's that's electrical tape a little bit more pliable but still not the appropriate repair for the situation here let's get some more of this stuff out of the way i wanna i wanna get a better view on what's going on inside of here rather than speculating that that's the problem i think i'm just going to test it i'm going to break out the smoke machine and plum that into this intake and then block off this intake tube right here and we're going to visually see if there's any smoke coming out of this electrical tape repair okay what i've done here is i've connected the smoke production machine uh to that intake tube let's go ahead and turn that on we'll go for maximum flow and this thing is gonna create a rich white smoke and it's already here check it out and i will just plug this off okay it's happening fast look at that it's coming out of the electrical tape mod and there's looks like there's another leak behind this little cover that i don't think i can remove but that's definitely unmetered air entering the engine i'm gonna pause this camera real quick i'm going to see if i can't take off this cover and we can get a better inspection on the inside of this i see a bolt so let's go for that and see if this cover comes apart let's see here i don't know maybe i'll just pull this tube off i know it's got a leak so i can just remove this and we'll see what's under here oh yeah that's not that's not going to work yeah put you here let's pull this tape off see what it looks like not good get that tear right there that's a problem it may not be the problem but it's definitely a contributing problem okay now that that's out of the way and we'll go in a little bit deeper i'll find a different place to plumb this intake manifold with the smoke and then i'll block off this throttle body see if there's any other leaks that are showing up around this area i i'm sure there is one that i need to see where it's at i think the best place to get a straight line to the intake is going to be through the vacuum booster hose right here um i did not notice any vacuum source or any vacuum release when i pulled this hose um i'm also gonna smoke this uh brake booster to see if that thing has a leak inside of it as well i believe that there's gonna be more than one issue with this car and okay this hose runs straight into the intake manifold and when i turn the machine back on it's going to fill this entire manifold assembly full of smoke i have to cap off this throttle body of course but it's going to let me see if there's any leaks at the manifold gaskets any of the vacuum hoses the throttle body gaskets uh idle air control valve etc so it's going to check everything on top of cylinder heads for any other vacuum leaks okay machines back on and let's block that throttle body and take a look okay got another one right here it looks like it's this vacuum line coming out of the bottom of the throttle body there's a bunch of stuff in the way it's tough to see it's gonna be this line right here you can see that it's deteriorated and cracking let's uh let's see what this is attached to i'm not sure what this is for oh it runs back to there's some kind of a vacuum manifold way back in there i'm not familiar with this i'm not sure what it's for uh either way that needs to that needs to be rectified also let's see if i can't get it disconnected without tearing it come on off come on oh oh yeah that's a big look at that right there huge split in that hose split on this side and on that can side see it okay well next step is i'm going to plug this tube off and continue to smoke test this intake okay i have i have that outlet tube plugged off i've also plugged off the pcb valve or the hose from the pcb and i see another leak happening at the diaphragm for the cgr valve i hope the light is going to show it yeah there it is there's a good spot but we can see there's more smoke coming out of the of the vacuum diaphragm on the cgr valve so this thing's got uh got quite a few vacuum leaks going on this one may not be the or this is the smallest of the problems but uh that diaphragm should not be leaking so we are going to address that as well all right let's power down this machine and i'm going to go ahead and write all this stuff up i'm going to recommend that we replace this length of hose right here obviously that intake plumbing is gonna have to be replaced and i'm going to also suggest that we replace the cgr valve once uh once i get all these leaks sealed up what i can do is reset the fuel trims and uh we're gonna see how this engine responds to not having any more vacuum leaks going on with it yeah i don't see anything else nothing in the back okay i'm comfortable with this at this point so let's move forward and see what these people want to do with this van oh i almost forgot i wanted to uh check this brake booster for leaks also so let's plug that in and i'll go into the cabin and check under the dash for any uh any presence of smoke and then uh once we come out of there i'll recheck this area just to make sure there's no leaks externally yep there's uh there's smoke in here also see that smoke coming out of the brake booster right right in this area here i know the light's terrible and it's tough to catch on cam but i i hope you fellas can see that and ladies i know there's several ladies here and my flashlight's dying okay i'm gonna ride it up for a break booster too that's quite a list before we get in too deep with this um if these folks decide they're going to repair all these goodies i uh i suspect that this video is going to run super super long so i'm probably going to go ahead and break this down into multiple videos that being said what i will do is i will build all those into a playlist and at the end screen on this video there's going to be a little pop-up that says subscribe and then next to it there's going to be a little square that shows a thumbnail go ahead and click that thumbnail and that will take you over to the playlist and i will have those videos listed and ready in order as i go through all these different procedures all right i've had a length of vacuum hose delivered and i'm gonna see if i can't reach way way back in here to fetch that hose without taking the doghouse out that seems to be a lot of a lot of extra work i hope you guys can see this i'm sticking you way back in the hole here and putting the gopro on top of the coil pack that should provide a little bit of a line of sight for you this is a little bit beyond reach so i got some super long needle nose if i can just get a hold of this without breaking something off i'll be in good shape i think i can get it off struggle is real i must be careful to not break the plastic victory is near try again almost there okay i'm running out of patience there got it and i will fish the new one back in oh now that's a that's a bit of a problem this was it's half inch inner diameter up here but it appears to be a smaller diameter back there i'm gonna have to figure out how to reduce the size of the paint here there's the there's the half inch size side of the old hose where the split was and going around to the other side you can see here that the inner diameter is noticeably smaller so i think what i'll do i've got a piece of 3 8 hose right here i think i will just stick feed one of them into the other maybe i'll put oil on that to get it to go farther down and then this hose should uh be the exact same size as that nipple on the on that valve back there so i think in order to do this i'll put some dielectric grease on here it is silicone based and should not deteriorate this hose that's why i'm using dielectric and i'll just stick it on in there oh yeah it's going perfect okay i'll get this cut maybe right around here now let's see if it fits oh no oh where'd you guys go all right let's try this again you guys see okay it's out of your field of view right now but i'm reaching around to uh run this hose in the appropriate location again this is out of my reach so i may have to use the long pliers to get this to go on i need grease in this too all right you missed the application but i think you can see there's a little bit of grease inside of that id of the hose that will help me get this uh this bad boy in place oh my plate okay i got it lined up i i just gotta push it's almost in oh i missed and after all that i might end up taking this dog house out anyway no oh there it goes now i just gotta gotta wiggle it a little bit should make its way all the way down to the bottom that's where i want it deep as i can get it in here come on if i stick my face in here i can reach farther enough i just can't get it glad i put some lube on this this never would have went in without the problem here is leverage let's try some adjustments move the light now i'm gonna reach around from a different angle huh two hands now one on the pliers and the other one's over here applying some pressure i've got it just over halfway there from what i can see i think if i try to force it anymore i might it may break something danger all right that's as far as it's going to go here's the that's where the barb barb section is i've got plenty of meat on there to hold this that's this is that and it's gonna stay right there okay let's get you guys out of there and here's the other end of this hose i want to uh route this under intake right there and gonna cut it off maybe here or so and then plug it in let's make the cut come on you know i've got hose cutting tools but they're too far away and in my box and i've already i've already invested enough time in this trying to use the wrong tool so i'm just going to double down there okay let's plug it in right y'all cool all right one repair has been completed uh i'm gonna go ahead and uh and pause this video for right now i remember i mentioned earlier i was gonna potentially do this in chapters uh they did end up approving all the repairs i think i did fail to mention that but i'm going to be doing the cgr valve next and i'll be doing the brake booster after that so i'm just going to segment this into a a couple of sequel videos so all that being said thank you guys for watching this one i will see you on the next
