Bloodborne Lore - Patches, From Hyena to Spider

patches the spider is a peculiar character in blood-borne and when many soul series fans should be very familiar with well at least not in this form this forum seems more suitable to his personality that or the hyena the name associated with him in Demon Souls in an interview with he date Hakka Miyazaki he admits to being the creator of patches and his quite proud he made it this far hence why patches only appears in Soul Series games he directs patches is even voiced by the same actor William Van der poi across the three games I need to give you a small injection can I do that oh you don't even know what is full I'm not gonna be drugged up and manageable I want answers alright okay I'll do you a deal you take the injection and I'll tell you everything you want to know I don't think so to truly understand patches the spider I thought it would be best to examine every encounter with him in the last two games just to see the evolution of his character in Demon Souls you first encounter patches the hyena waving you down and eager to tell you about treasure it's a weapon and quite obviously a very risky situation oh you're not mad like the rest are you well what jolly travelling companions are way pleased to meet you call me patches who see that treasure over there go on and take it I give to you just to show that we're friends huh I'm glad to meet you these Soul starved imbeciles will drive you mad what's the matter I'm going out on a limb here give me a chance to prove my good friend are my apologies it's just not your day as promised the treasure is all yours if you survive that is good luck to you when you go for it a large creature blocks your way and patches makes a run for it when you survive he is quite surprised you how did you do that worry not the treasure is all yours tough luck with the bear bugs but you certainly showed them didn't you here it is the treasure safe and sound gone take it take it he tries to play at office he didn't see the trap coming and you're just unlucky you simply unlucky worried not stay by me my luck will rub off on you soon enough he becomes a merchant in the Nexus which is basically the hub I'm glad I found you I found some really nice trinkets I no longer partake in the whole corpse robbing thing yeah now I'm completely free from my vice my old mother would be proud indeed he tells you he renounced his ways and he's just a simple merchant now his mother would be proud you soon encounter him again in another area of the game behind an altar his shiny stones all over the ground oh hello again hey don't turn a cold shoulder I didn't mean to do you wrong really come on now we've got better things to fret about that pit there is filled with treasure but Sir I can't get to it myself go on have a look it's more riches than I've ever dreamed of he says he is sorry but tries to get you to take peek down into a pit full of items as if to work together in order to loot the goods and just as you're naive self takes a peek what do you know he betrays you again don't only against me I take it I'm starving today then I'll sell every last trinket off your paws when you make away with your life he tries to apologize make amends yet again hey I'm really sorry I didn't mean what I said the man's got to make a living right here look I can make up for it there aren't many humans like us we need to stick together I know here take this as a token of my friendship you've seen one of these before surely while his betrayal certainly rewards you nice rings he still thinks that trust as an option come on let's be friends what do you say no need to drag each other down back at the Nexus he makes for a very precious yet expensive merchant for health items so I never recommend killing him besides he doesn't say anything important you just make the game harder for yourself something also very interesting is in the pit you were kicked down into you need a devout priest who was also tricked in the same way well I did the same he fooled me and now I am stuck here but have no fear God will cleanse us of evil pray with me Mombasa his shiny stones serve as a form of bait to lure unsuspecting people to his traps and apparently they fall for them that's his trademark when you save the priest he returns to the Nexus later when he talks about the priest he says something that shines a little more light on his personality have you seen a priest and his disciples over there they still don't trust me after that little incident behind the old I don't blame them I believe in forgiving and forgetting well I've been doing a hell of a lot of that with you well I have news for them praying has not put food in my mouth nor anyone else's I think it's clear by those last words he's an atheist or something if he thinks praying is silly good date this becomes a little more apparent in Dark Souls when he straight-up asks you if you're a cleric from the get-go your clerical clerics and Dark Souls are highly religious and holy they are of the way of white and worship Gwen who is trying to keep the great fire lit a cleric or something well that strange oh I know what it is you've come for the dream kids haven't you he knows clerics among other looters ventured down into the catacombs but just why is he there you're soon to find out when you respond with a yes to his question of being a cleric he has a more sinister tone to him I imagined as much best of luck with your pilgrimages or missions or whatever he did this place is treacherous do what you're stepping yeah either response to his question leads to an ominous warning - watch your step he's even by a switch that controls a bridge you're about to cross and when trying to cross that bridge it turns and can cause you to fall to your death unless you're nimble enough all the items littered below suggest he does this to a lot of people and probably has no regard for human life especially that of clerics for the religious nature he springs this trap on you whether or not you tell him you're a cleric oh well how are you they iced it and put that leave AZ it didn't cause you any trouble by chance after approaching him after his trickery he'll play ignorant responding with yes yields an item and forgiveness please search him well that's a fine shame or I'm truly sorry really but wait now it didn't actually fall down then why didn't you tell me sooner all's well that ends well all's well that ends well as his catch line everybody makes mistakes I'm not above it all I swear I mean trusty patches no one and only and he even calls himself trusty patches although not too trusty if you ask me I know he should make up for it we're on the same song reasons Undead outcasts even after the debacle he'll still try to manipulate you into trusting him again through a common bond the next time you encounter him is after the thorough lone clerics make their pilgrimage into the tomb of giants and we encounter a situation that looks very much like the situation and Demon Souls whoa you again well well you've been a stranger it's good to see you well medalie all right you came at the perfect time there's a fine stash of treasure right down that hole I found it first but we're friends now I'll split it with you in any case have a look it'll shimmer you blind his laughs don't suggest anything pure about his intentions and we've been through this before haven't we examine the cliff and yet again he kicks you down into it this is what I do my friend that trinkets are we bits of advice on people at Firelink he's actually right about Petrus he'll kill Rhea the girl I saved earlier unless you do something about it but that's another game for another day let's get back to blood-borne what we're really here for you first really encounter patches right after entering the forbidden woods he will somehow be behind any interactable door in the game you can only hear his voice but this is what he says do you know but I'm willing to do you a kindness step lightly round to the right of the great Cathedral and see an ancient shrouded church the gift of the Godhead will grant you strength yeah the gift of the Godhead is the supposed strength you will receive and the Godhead is amygdala then he gives you a tonsil stone now before you get all grossed out thinking this is some slimy dispelled build-up from a giant monsters tonsils he's handing to you the description says it's a stone or possibly a meteorite with a gravitational force that won't let you get rid of it it's also worth noting there are a few translations that serve as a play on words tonsil translated to Spanish is amygdala amygdala when translated to French it's a meek doll Amidala a lot of languages translate tonsil into something similar to amygdala but most curious of all is the Latin translation being dangerous and I wouldn't put it past patches sending us into dangerous territory so what this item is essentially is a meteorite from the amygdala creatures homeworld or whatever was some sort of supernatural force to it patches promises that by taking this stone to the Cathedral amygdala will grab you and eventually grant you his strength Oh Oh have you done have mercy on the poor bastard as you can hear from the tone of his voice this is yet another trick immediately after teleportation he meat patches on the other side of a door look how look at his cowardice hiding behind a door what a joy it is to behold divine it must be such a pleasure you're in my debt you know you're not on a beast of the field but here you are trading a measure with the gods he tries to make you think you were endowed with such a blessing then he goes on to insult you and tell you to make haste to battle amygdala where I bet he's got money on you losing horribly are you feet as fat as your wits you see sister 3 take the plunge throw yourself to the wolves soon after you transport to the nightmare frontier where patches resides clinging to a Co side when you make progress to his location you see his telltale bait and lure with shiny coins and a trick message making it pretty obvious if you go over there you'll get shoved off into a pit of dire circumstances this is commonplace with him lucky stamp the gift of the Godhead heaven and also this is no fun getting out of it it is worth noting you can shoot him down but he disappears and responds after you reload the area after destroying amygdala you'll encounter him later from the other side of the first door be you cannot be if you didn't know this comes to pass in seeing you he is startled as he expected you to be dead which means his amygdala is dead instead now if you get this far and having beaten amygdala you just won't comment on it but all the dialogue is the same honestly they just don't met one line that you didn't know hmm now wait just a moment do you think you love me me you'll have a choice here don't forgive him and he says this pains me to hear it you've made yourself a miss reckoning I shared with you a thing most secret now you'll witness to a miracle and all the stronger for it it's plain as a pikestaff now say in my heart you are as a lamb to my god well you weren't to know and it wasn't for you to know all's well that ends well I say he basically says you were a sacrifice to his God and it was basically his contribution to his religion and what you didn't know wouldn't hurt you if you forgive him he leaves out those details and he says this made I should think not I shared with you a thing most secret now you witness to a miracle and all the stronger for it you should appreciate it if you were great gratitude EU he's thinking what an idiot he trusts me even after what I did to him makes something pretty clear this is a most pleasing encounter you see I must depart ere long my god is lost to me so I must a way to find another it's a kind a parsley cross again sooner still if you were to take leave amygdala was his God and he doesn't seem all too broken up about it I mean there are several of them just like patches he laughs it off and downplays the situation I'll see another crack down upon that [ __ ] his boss did you bestow salvation then throws out his catch line all's well today as well what I find most interesting is how he goes from having no God hating clerics and previous games then suddenly having a change of heart and finding faith in a nightmare reality perhaps that amulet around his neck as a sign of his devotion to amygdala later he will depart and show up in the chalice dungeons as a merchant just like good old times the sight of you is bound to my eyes truly you are an indubitable irrefutable friend and my dear compared I found once more to ease your burden the wiki describes his character best badges the spider like all its souls counterparts is an NPC that promises the player-character some form of treasure only to betray them and put them in extreme peril once the hunter escapes the peril or dies and confronts patches you will beg for forgiveness and become a merchant well said random wiki author well said now against my usual formula of just playing all the dialogue and commenting on it noting and adding additional lore with evidence for patches I'll go into a little Q&A first wise patches in all three games if all three games take place in separate universes its vias Aki's character and trademark it's similar to there being a sid in all of Sakaguchi's Final Fantasy games and it's just cool for fans second why is patches a spider I think it's to fit the theme of the game and it just suits his personality in blood-borne you know thrown people into traps as a spider does its prey I know it's hard to trust the spider but that's why they obscure his body when he's trying to lead you to his trap he thought if a fall didn't kill you then his god surely would that's all I have on patches but that doesn't mean you have to
