Bill Burr on the NBA Being Rigged & Becoming the First Comedian Ever to Perform at Fenway Park

our first guest tonight is one of the funniest people there is you can listen to his podcast and see him live on the slight return stand up tour where on august 21st he will become the first comedian to headline fenway park please say hello to bill burr [Applause] all right thank you it's very good to see you you know i was watching that game that game seven uh-huh uh and i was thinking about you and i was wondering if you were like when you watch a celtics game seven like that do you are you quiet do you go crazy do you celebrate what do you do no i kind of you know i have kids now so i can't watch the whole game because uh oh wow no i can't cause i'll flip out and i also think the nba is sort of low-key rigged you know really really yeah why does that surprise any nba fan i don't know how many times you can watch a game a team goes up by 20 right and then all of a sudden that ticky tack foul ticky tack file they're in the penalty the other team's going through the line their job's to get it down to about five to seven at halftime and then an espn talking head then comes on and goes i'll tell you right now i'm really concerned about that team that used to be up by 20 and it's now only up by five and it gives you this idea oh man what's gonna happen first half of the third quarter is for the players and then the referees assess what they need to do to make it come down to the final two minutes so this if you watch the first quarter they let the teams play second quarter belongs to the refs and from half court uh half of the third quarter on that's my just my belief i've said it as rigged forever and when a mobbed up ref came out you know people still still ah it's just one guy just one guy jimmy yes just one guy right if you're officiating a game and i'm shaving points how many games does it take before you pull me aside like hey bill what's going on with you huh yeah right got some stuff going on you know sorry i'm saying there's no santa claus i apologize i i think a lot of people agree with that but i also think that when you win you put that aside you go i'm not gonna say it's rigged the celtics are going to the nba finals we fit the script this year i don't think it's a hundred percent i'm just saying that they it's massaged i see it i know it's going to be exciting oh what the refs just have way too much power okay i think when you have a sport where an official can literally take a star player out of the game by giving them two quick ones in the first quarter that's an incredible amount of power you can't take tom brady out of a game you know you can't take these guys up i i guess you could eject somebody yeah you could i don't know why why did i do that i don't know i'm supposed to come out here and you're supposed to be happy this is how you you have trouble with happiness is that hard for you i'll tell you what bugged me was your fake concern there the way you the way he leaned in and you squinted your face i think do you have trouble being happy no i i don't have a problem being happy i have a great time being happy as long as nobody asked me that question yeah i mean i don't know like what do i have to do to convince people that i i'm not walking around in a rage but like if you say something stupid i'm you know i'm gonna look at you you um are performing at fenway park you are doing comedy at fenway park yes i am which i assume that's got to be i mean that's nobody's ever done that before there's a guy from boston that's got to be incredible yes i'm trying to block that out how insane that's going to be so uh how many tickets is that how many seats i don't know i've blocked the whole thing out i'm just like i have a gig in boston in august and i'm just going to try to like you know go out there you know people like you should do something you should have uh one of the red sox you know come out on stage just like why why would i do that i should just just stick to what i'm doing i'm gonna tell my jokes and hopefully tell your jokes and hopefully it'll it'll be all right like will everyone you know from back home come to this there's a lot of people coming there's actually a lot of people from my my high school graduating class are coming real very excited about uh we're all kind of meeting up beforehand because i had a great grade we had a real cool like mellow grade where by like the end like the jocks were hanging out with the burnouts and the shop people and all of that you keep in touch with your high school friends huh i mean they come out to shows and like yeah yeah run into a man who's your like who's the character in the group who's the one that you're most interested in seeing what's going on oh i don't know i mean it's been so damn long i i it's more like names i do but i'm not gonna like because then you're gonna ask me a story and then i'm gonna get him in trouble right yeah yeah yeah so yeah you got me all figured out yeah i am doing a joke though you know about how these kids today with the cameras all over the place like back in the day when we were younger and there was no cameras you drove a car and if it died you just burned it you got the insurance comp honey and the cops would be showing up going so you're telling me somebody stole a brown 85 ford escort you're telling me that and we're like that's what we're telling you the guy's like i can't i don't believe you it's like well we got no video so that's what happened [Applause] you do it all the time dude for real all the time let's do it all the time you got a little taste of what it will be like to be on stage at fenway when you threw out the first pitch there last month was that something that you were like worried about because a lot of people freak out about that oh i like i wasn't worried about it and then everybody was like giving me all of this stuff about like uh you know about you know throwing the pitch out make whatever you do make sure you don't bounce the ball somebody goes i get you know what you know what you do don't throw it from the mound throw it from the grass in front of the mound and i'm like well i'm not doing that because then if i bounce it from the grass it's like i'm going to get doubly like bashed yeah everybody does that on the internet right yeah guys will act like you don't read that stuff but they do so i was just like all right well if it's going to happen i'm going to throw it from the mound but um i just the level of stress people like whatever you do don't bounce it it's like or else what i don't get my mlb contract it's like i'm a bald 53 year old comedian i can throw it through the backstop if i want to well let's take a look at how it turned out all right i noticed i went up there i just did it i didn't stand there long enough to think about it look at this twitter look at that though look at that no look yeah i mean come on who's making fun of anything oh god i thought my leg was coming up and around i think you had a little spin on that you know what no it just ran out of velocity you know what's funny was somebody said uh somebody my favorite echo that i got about that on twitter was somebody said that was a buck in a book like all right it's like well there's nobody on base so it doesn't really matter does it that's got to be satisfying to have that video and to know that you did that so well i couldn't believe how much i cared after it went over the plate i was up there going like i don't care this is stupid whatever just go out and do it you know and then i got out there and then when it actually went well like i just felt like this this level of relief was ridiculous because everybody was you know i had a buddy of mine do it one time and he like he was so trying not to like bounce the ball he he he airmailed it so bad the catcher never even came out of his crouch it just went flying over his head so i was like i don't want to do that so well you got to pitch and then you know if things if your life continues to go well perhaps you will graduate to this and here's jimmy kimmel host of course of his own show on abc only down two lines right man i never miss a chance bill burr is here they're not gonna watch what i do it's a rigged question you had a couple of shows in vegas uh over the weekend what hotel were you at in vegas uh the cosmopolitan cosmopolitan what do you do when you're not on stage in las vegas oh i'm like howard hughes i just stay in the room i just avoid the whole thing but i i had a little balcony so i kind of i watched the planes taken off and landing i know it's sad but i'm into it and i have a little app and i can listen to the tower and all that and it's fascinating i get fascinated by the approach of the helicopters where they get to go through like new york new york mgm they go right down that street which i did one time which is it's amazing you did you did that in the helicopter yeah i i was flying with uh a friend of mine i wouldn't have had the nerve to try because you really you know that's like a uh major airspace so you have to know how to get in and out of it you can't just be going like where where where am i supposed to be you can't be doing that when like southwest planes are taking off and landing so you sit there listening to the the control towers yeah because it it makes you good when you're flying that it doesn't sound like a foreign language to you and you know shouldn't you know all the stuff before you fly the helicopter no you do know it but you can forget it it's like you don't go to the gym for a while you you're down a little bit so like if you don't fly for a little while the first radio call you make is just a jumbled mess and then you get off you're like oh god i sound like i got two hours flight time on me and it's just it's embarrassing i see all right and so yeah you got your pilot's license and do you ever fly yourself to these gigs no it's too much stress because then if there was any sort of weather problem or something like that i also i don't like flying at night because if you know god forbid had an engine problem it's like where would i put it i don't need you know is that an open field is that water like you can't tell at night yet so you're a pilot who almost never flies no i fly when he says first she had to big league me with your home run and now what are you gonna take he's gonna pull out him now flying a jet would you get the fly with tom cruise for the uh i did take a helicopter flying less than once and it was the most terrifying like 11 minutes of my whole life it was terrifying yeah the first time it kind of runs up you should have to hold the the what cyclometers you're basically in a guillotine yeah yeah in the air yes in the air you have directed a film is it done are you have you finished it you shot it and yeah we shot it uh we shot it from miramax and uh we are right now we're editing it um stars myself bobby canavali uh bokeem woodbine uh oh yeah he's great both those guys are great and you're great too that i mean that's a great cast you have there yeah i think it's going to be a good movie it's called old dads old dads yeah it's basically about guys like me that have you know kids really late in life and then you know you bring your kids to school and there's this whole new way of doing stuff and uh you know people start giving you looks i like that and you are you have another netflix comedy special coming uh i know sort of thing uh bill burr uh presents uh friends that kill where we have all these great uh comics coming up and uh that's out in june or something like that very good well it's always a delight to see you enjoy that nba finals i know you're really gonna you're gonna soak up every second of that no i can't be that guy screaming at his tv with his kids around so i just sort of like i kind of poke my head and then i come back out oh it's great you're like you if your team wins you'll be like yes they won but it was fixed yeah i will in a way i i mean it's not it's massaged where's your team uh lakers i like the lights yeah i mean you guys that's one of the most massaged histories of all time who doesn't like a machine yeah you got a mobbed-up raft you got a b.a.a championship you take four championships five championships from minnesota it's a very hollywood resume where you're sort of jacking it up bill burr he takes the fun out of absolutely everything you can see wait a minute oh you ain't leaving on that i threw a strike and then you had to show your home run yourself unbelievable did you want to see that home run again or no wait wait yeah i would i'd like to see you playing softball where they had the east side pitch from a regulation mom they moved the wall in I think Kimmel is honing in on how to handle Burr, and potentially it's his attempt to be better to comedians. He has gotten a lot of flack from all comic podcasters and this seems a little different for him. He is actually playing and poking at Burr a bit, and he got the best out of him. Considering there's no Conan, this is a good attempt (better than Fallons, they tried when they made him give advice which was respectable), I think Kimmel knows how to be good, but corporate interest has kept him bland. It was quite an enjoyable Burr at a talk show event.
