in this video I'm going to show you guys how to tie one of the best catfish rigs there is whether you were bank fishing boat fishing pond fishing river fishing this rig can be adapted to pretty much any of those situations all you're going to need to tie this rig is a high-quality circle hook or octopus hook a swivel that properly suits the size fish you're targeting a plastic bead and a no role in line sinker or a sinker slide for your hook you're going to want to go with a heavy gauge circle hook or octopus hook most of the time I use Eagle Claw trokar circle hooks and one important feature is that the eye here is welded that means when you Snell your hook there's no pinch point for the line here which could damage the line as far as size goes most of the time I fish with a seven ah this is good for fish between 4 and say 30 pounds if you're going for really small fish you're gonna want to drop your hook size down and if you're going for anything over 2530 pounds you might want to go up to a nine or bigger next you're going to need your leader material I usually use trying big-game it's cheap easy to find in stores it comes on a big spool and I found that it's pretty abrasion resistant for a long way I usually use thirty pound test this is good for fish anywhere up to mid 20s if you're going for something really large or if you're fishing in heavy cover I would definitely bump your line size up your swivel choice isn't super important just make sure the breaking strength is reasonable most manufacturers will put the breaking strength right on the packaging as you can see on the back of this braking strength over 70 pounds there's two different weight sips you could fish with this rig you're either going to need a flat inline lead they come in a couple of different shapes this is probably the most common or you're gonna need these sinker sliders if you're using a sinker slider you're going to need a different type of lead they usually either look something like this or this type is super common in stores the weight of the lead depends on your fishing situation but I rarely go less than two or three ounces even when Bank fishing with no current two or three ounces really helps cast out when you're using big chunk beat a lot of people use anywhere from three to eight ounces so once you get are your supplies let's get to tying it first start by pulling off about a three-foot section of your leader material next we need to attach our leader material to the hook if you're using a circle hook a Snell my is technically the most effective not to use because it helps turn the hook into the fish's lips so I'm going to show you a knotless knot to Snell your hook because I think that is the easiest fastest way to nail a hook so you're going to insert your leader material in the front of the hook you only need about a half an inch going down the shank of the hook pinch the end if your hook has a gap in the eye make sure that you start your wraps on the opposite side so you don't have any abrasion problems there you're gonna take your leader side of the line and you're gonna wrap it down the hook tightly do at least ten wraps I'd say and then tighten those wraps up now I like to wrap back over them a couple times just to help lock them in and then go back through the top of the eye of the hook with your leader end of the line now all you have to do is pull tight and there you go a super easy way to snow a hook next we need to make our leader to swivel connection the length of the leader is going to vary depending on your fishing situation but generally twelve to twenty-four inches is a good starting point for my leader to swivel connection I usually use the figure eight knot I like this because it has a really good range of motion and it lets your bait move naturally so to tie your figure eight knot put the line through one end of your swivel-fold line over itself pinch it about an inch or inch and a half down and now as the name implies we're going to pretty much draw a figure eight with the swivel to make this connection so fold it over around the leader and then back up through just like we do a figure eight and then pull tight you could probably actually see it looks like a figure eight as we pull it tight and then that's it and you just need to cut off the excess all that's left to do is connect your rig to your main line so you're going to take your lead whether it's a flat inline or a slider flip it onto the line and then this is a super important make sure that you're using a buffer bead because the lead will destroy your knot if you're not using one of these slide it on for your mainline to swivel connection any good fishing I will do lately I've been using mostly a union so I'll show you a quick tutorial on how to tie one of those to tie you slide your line through the swivel make sure you have a good amount of access here fold it over now fold it back again creating a large loop like so now you need to wind this tag end back around this doubled up line at least five or six times so at this point it should look like that and then lubricate your line pull tight cinch down and you might have to adjust it as it's going down and that is how you tie a union all that's left to do is experiment with your lead size your hook size and your leader length and this rig can be adapted to pretty much any fishing situation that you encounter another quick adaptation you can do to this rig to make it even more effective is put a float two or three inches from the hook that basically floats your bait off the bottom and that is also what we call a Santy Cooper rig I have another tutorial on that rig if you want to check it out however it's pretty much the same concept just for the flow a couple inches above the hook and there you have it that's all it takes to tie one of the best catfishing rig zeros
