and catfish rigs it seems like I get more questions from people about those than anything else and I'm just going to tell you right now that people make catfish bait way too complicated everybody's out there searching for some sort of magic bullet everybody's got some sort of concoction that they're great Uncle Joe's cousin Fred's Aunt Mary used that was a super secret concoction and works better than everything else and I'm just going to tell you right now that there's no magic bullet out there there's not a secret weapon but catfish baits are very very simple and I'm going to tell you that out of all the years that I've been a catfish guide and all the fish and I do year-round I can count the number of baits that I use year-round on one hand so I'm going to talk to you a little bit today about everything you need to know about the best catfish baits and very very simple terms okay so first thing people ask me what's the best bait to use for catfishing the first thing I ask them is what kind of catfish so that's the first thing you need to know there's three primary species of catfish that anglers target in the United States now there's certainly a few other species of catfish but the three primary blues channels and flatheads so the best bait that you're going to use is going to depend on which species of catfish that you're going to target so you need to figure that out first once you've figured out which species of catfish you're going to target then it all becomes pretty simple for blue catfish hands-down shad or skip Jack hearing whichever is native in your home waters you're going to find that more anglers have the most success with those baits than just about anything else it's just going to depend on which one of those is native to your home waters but shad and skipjack carrying our hands down one of the best baits for blue catfish and I fish primarily with shad year round for blue catfish now other baits work well for blue catfish as well any other form of legal cut bait that you can use in your home waters carp drum Buffalo perch you name it any other kind of fish that's legal to use cut bait in your home waters well generally work is cut bait for blue catfish now some are going to be better than others as a general rule the oily or the fish is the better it's going to be for catfish bait so shad or skipjack and then some other form of cut bait and that's going to be your best option for baits for blue catfish for channel catfish simple where I live here in Texas we don't have a lot of big channel catfish when I target channel catfish it's primarily numbers so we're catching lots of fish most of them are 1 to about 3 pounds and you will not find a more effective bait for channel catfish in numbers those smaller size channel catfish then what most people will call stink bait dip bait punch bait any form of prepared bait but that old stinky stuff that you find in the stores there's lots of different options out there that are available and lots of good and a few bad but those stink baits are just absolutely deadly for catching numbers of channel catfish I like to use punch baits because they're easier to fish with if you get more information about that on my website or on my youtube channel now if you want to catch larger channel catfish then you go back to almost the same rule as blue catfish you're going to use some form of cut bait in most cases and that's going to be the most effective bait for catching larger channel catfish but it's pretty simple stuff you don't have to overthink it now last but not least flathead catfish pretty simple as a general rule you're going to do best with some sort of live bait you want bait that's good and Hardy and it's going to stay lively on the hook and move around a whole lot that's generally going to produce more and bigger flathead catfish than anything else I like to use perch or bluegill and even sometimes like black salty bait fish if I have to but there's lots of options out there again anything that you it's legal to use as live bait in your home waters that's going to be big and Hardy and it's going to stay on the hook and stay alive on the hook for extended periods of time it's going to be your best option for flathead catfish now you can catch flathead catfish on cut bait and other things like that I have my most success with live bait it seems like cut bait is specific to either having moving water with current or a moving boat is generally when you're going to be more effective or have any effectiveness at all with cut bait for flathead catfish that's it that's really all you need to worry about again.we catfish shed skipjack herring or some other form of legal cut bait channel catfish some form of stink bait punch bait for numbers some form of cut bait for a larger channel catfish and then for flathead catfish some sort of good Hardy live bait that's going to make a lot of movement out there on your hook it's going to stay alive for an extended period of time that's all you need to do I promise you if you'll simplify your catfish bait get out there and get your baits in the right location put them in front of
