all right does anybody remember what we talked about last week Nicodemus yes Yeshua yes to good answers all right so we were in John chapter 3 and we're talking about Nicodemus coming to speak to the schewe and afterwards actually was talking about Isaac and he told me something that I hadn't realized before I thought was really interesting so I'm gonna go ahead and share it even though it's not related to tonight's message it's related to last week's message and hesita with why Nicodemus came at nighttime and you know I've heard a lot of different theories about why he came at nighttime and people have said that he came at night because he was afraid or ashamed or something like that and actually it was the opposite he came at nighttime to show you sure that he was not trying to attack him he wasn't trying to make a public spectacle he wasn't trying to humiliate him and publicly he came to him quietly in secret so humbly basically to say I'm here to actually honestly sincerely talk to you I don't want to to try to try to make you look bad in front of the other Pharisees basically now that's really interesting very cool so thanks Isaac for pointing that out I appreciate that I wish you told me that last week so I could share didn't last week but anyway so mmm excuse me sorry for my voice we are at the end of John chapter 3 starting verse 22 after these things Jesus and his disciples came into the land of Judea and there he remained with them and baptized now John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim because there was much water there and they came and were baptized for John had not yet been thrown into prison then there arose a dispute between some of John's disciples and the Jews about purification and they came to John and said to him rabbi he who was with you beyond the Jordan to whom you have testified behold he is baptizing and all are coming to him John answered and said a man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven you yourselves bear me witness that I said I am NOT the Christ but I have been sent before him he who has the bride is the bridegroom but the friend of the bridegroom who stands and hears him rejoices greatly because the bridegroom's voice therefore this joy is mine this joy mine is fulfilled he must increase but I must decrease he who comes from above is above all and he who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of the earth he who comes from heaven is above all and what he has seen and heard that he testifies and no one receives his testimony he who has received his testimony has certified that God is true for he whom God has sent speaks the words of God for God does not give the spirit by measure the Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand he who believes in the son has everlasting life and he who does not believe in the son shall not see life but the wrath of God abides on him therefore when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John though Jesus himself did not baptize his disciples he left UDN departed again to Galilee alright so I just wanted to throw that last part from chapter four and just to kind of tie into what we're we just read it says that in John 3 it says that Jesus was baptizing making disciples but then in John 4 it says well that actually wasn't Jesus during the baptizing it was the disciples themselves that were doing the baptizing and so it's one of those things that it's kind of interesting when it says that he was that he was baptizing and making disciples you don't really think about it as his disciples were doing it on his behalf you just think oh he was doing it but so in verse in chapter 4 it explains well he wasn't the one actually physically in the water with the people his disciples were doing it in his stead on his behalf in his name and so I think the the obvious verse that stands out in this that I think most people have heard sermons on that you know over the years you've probably heard people preach on he must increase and I must decrease and that's a great message but that's not what I'm going to talk about today what I'm going to talk about today is baptism it says that Yeshua was baptizing and making disciples and I was looking at that I was thinking about it and it's one of those things that I never really thought about how close the connection between discipleship and baptism is and as I was looking at these these verses this week it just kind of clicked in my head is like wait a minute there's a direct link between baptism and making disciples you think about the Great Commission wizzy say go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them and then name of the Father the Son of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything that I've commanded you that's what making disciples is go and make disciples baptizing them and teaching them to obey and so he's giving us this this outline of what it is to make a disciple so how do we do that how do we make disciples well we baptize them and teach them to obey Him right and so we see well that's exactly what we see happening here is his disciples were going out baptizing people making more disciples I want to read a little clip from is this is from the Jewish encyclopedia and it's just kind of something I thought was interesting is talking about baptism and it's talking about the baptism for conversion this is according to the juice encyclopedia this is Jewish historical information and you know I'm pressing this just to let you know that I'm not putting a whole lot of weight into the Jewish encyclopedia I'm referencing it because it's it's I found it to be interesting the baptism of the proselyte has for its purpose his cleansing from the impurity of idolatry and the restoration to the purity of a newborn man the bathing in water is to constitute a rebirth where for the ger or proselyte the Gentile who is converting to Judaism is like a child just born and he must bathe in the name of God as I'm reading this does is it starting to your hearing familiar of themes from the New Testament that you're going to be cleansed from impurity you're going to be newborn man a rebirth and it's to be done in the name of God you you see there's a lot of really interesting connections to what this is saying this is written by non believing Jews these are Jews who don't believe you sure as the Messiah they don't accept the New Testament testimony and they're saying these things that sound very similar to what the New Testament writers were saying that's why I think this is really interesting so there they must bathe in the name of God that is assumed the yoke of God's kingdom imposed upon him by the one who leads him into the baptism or else he has not admitted into Judaism for this is the very reason the Decalogue which is that the 10 the 10 commandments as well as according to rabbinical tradition to undergo the right of baptismal purification I'm sorry according to Philo on the Decalogue as well as according to rabbinical tradition to undergo the Rite of baptism of purification and so the thing that I thought was interesting is that it is it says to baptize them or to bathe them in the name of God what did you sure say baptize them in the name of the Father the Son the Holy Spirit and it says that the they assume the yoke of God's kingdom that is imposed on them by the one that leads them in the baptism does that make sense so what did you sure say my yoke is easy my burden is light right he says that the Pharisees want to heap on heavy burdens but come to me because my burden is easy my yoke is easy and so the yoke of the Pharisees when people would take on the yoke of the Pharisees they were taking on all the traditions of the elders all the the Talmud the oral traditions all the extra rabbinical writings and and rulings laws and various things that were brought in by the Pharisees they were taking on that extra heavy lope yoke and you sure said come to me and my yoke is easy so I think that's really interesting but I want to look it through the Bible I've heard so many different teachings on baptism and I've been a part of several different denominations and every denomination has their own opinions on baptism they have their own teachings about what baptism is what purpose it serves how you do it you know is it required for salvation or not and what's interesting is I think from what I've discovered is most denominations say baptism is not required for salvation but it is required if you want to be a member of our church and that's kind of what they end up doing with it and it's like hang on where's that in the Bible I haven't seen the baptisms required for church membership anywhere but I want to look at at the way the the Bible talks about baptism in specifically in the New Testament again forgive me for my voice and so I made I rather than be flipping through a bunch of pages I want to just went ahead and made some notes that I can easily find the references that I wanted to look at so I had to flip through a bunch of pages but we just read in John 3 that Yeshua's baptizing disciples and in John 4 says that he made and baptized more disciples than John and that John's John's disciples were upset and they're they're afraid that basically you know that they picked the wrong guy you know they were following John and then Yeshua comes along and he starts becoming greater and so they get nervous and they go to John like wait a minute this guy he's he's baptizing more people than you and so that was kind of the the point of that conversation is ever saying wait a minute are we are we following the wrong guy here and John basically says he's supposed to increase I'm supposed to decrease but we go on and we look at Luke chapter 3 and verse 3 it says and he went into all the region around the Jordan preaching a baptism or of repentance for the remission of sins this is talking about John who was preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins he wasn't preaching baptism as outward sign of an outward expression of an inward act that wasn't being preached was it he wasn't preaching oh this is just symbolic work symbolically washing you and water but you know it's not really doing anything for you except just getting you wet that's not what he was preaching he was preaching repentance and remission of sins mark 1 verses 4 through 8 John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins then all the land of Judea and those from Jerusalem went out to him and were all baptized by him in the Jordan River confessing their sins and he preached saying there comes one after me who is mightier than I whose sandal strap I am not worthy to stoop down to loose I indeed baptize you with water but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit now remember last week we spoke in the first part of John 3 and Yeshua said that you must he said most assuredly I say to you unless one is born of water and the spirit he cannot enter the kingdom of God be born of water and the spirit well John says I'm baptizing you in water but there's one coming after me who's gonna do what baptize you in the Holy Spirit and so we're gonna look as we look through some of these examples especially in the book of Acts we're gonna see kind of a link between those two things there's gonna be we're gonna see water baptism and we're also going to see Baptists the Holy Spirit and how those things oftentimes coincide with one another in the book of Acts but before we get to the book of Acts I want to just mention some interesting patterns of water baptism and some of these are for shadows of baptism some of these are types and some of these are literal washings but throughout the Bible different ways that water is used and so first we see in creation in Genesis the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters of the deep and it was from the waters that he brought forth life and so water is a symbol of new life and we see that the waters dividing so the waters above and the waters below so heaven is called Hashem I emits the waters above that's what that's what heaven means in Hebrew Hashem I mean it's talking about the waters and so we have waters above waters below and then we see okay so the next thing we see is that Noah and his family were saved through water there was a flood to destroy the earth him and his family were saved through the water and new life again came through water and so the water destroyed all the sin washing away the sand purging the earth of all the filthiness and unrighteousness and then from that water sprang forth resurrection new life Moses in the basket when Moses was born Pharaoh pour forth and an edict in the land of Egypt and he said all the baby the the Hebrew children all the baby boys under 2 years of age were to be killed and the way they killed him as they tossed him into the Nile he drowned him and well what's interesting though is is Moses his mom put him in a basket put the basket in the Nile and then when Pharaoh's daughter found it she pulled him out of the Nile and basically rescued him from the water he was put into the water but he came out from the water and basically judged worthy to live the babies that were tossed into the water without the basket died and so that Egyptians would say well they weren't worthy to live this one came back up out of the water so he was judged worthy of life they didn't put him back in the water again they let him live brought him into the Pharaohs household and he became like a son of Pharaoh he was saved through water and then later on when Israel left Egypt Moses led them through water again the Red Sea parted the Red Sea they crossed over and then when Egypt tried to follow them the waters crashed in around him and wiped him out the judgment happened in water as well just as the judgment in the flood of the earth happened and water judgment happens in water but salvation also comes through water sin is destroyed in water new life is resurrected out of the water again crossing the Jordan after they've wandered in the wilderness for 40 years and they get to the edge of the Promised Land they cross the Jordan and they go into the Promised Land coming through the water again now we look at the Ten Commandments when they were in the wilderness and God's God told Moses have the people wash go tell the people to wash and so they all went and washed and then what happened he gave them the commandments that to wash first before they could receive the commandments from God then to make themselves ready to come into his presence we also see the priests washing before entering the tabernacle there's a number of different times and reasons for washing but specifically when you come to the tabernacle and you come into the presence when you're offering an offering you wash you cleanse yourself to make yourself ready to come into the presence of God after touching unclean things you were to wash there's no numerous commandments throughout the Old Testament that if you do these certain things if you make yourself unclean by touching certain things you become unclean you have to wash you wash after marital relations it's commanded in the Bible you'd wash and make yourself clean women to wash after their menstrual cycle and washing after healing for certain things like for example leprosy if someone was healed of leprosy there to wash and make themselves clean again various many many many Commandments in the Old Testament dealing with washings things that make you unclean and then how you're supposed to make yourself clean again to wash and so this is something that's not new in scripture when John came along preaching baptism cleansing remission from sin it's not really a new concept it's something that was there already and he's just applying it in a little bit different way and so I talked about baptism being linked to discipleship I want to look at mark chapter 16 now and he said to him go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature he who believes and is baptized will be saved but he who does not believe will be condemned now the people who say that baptism is not requirement for salvation like to ignore this verse they they don't like this verse they like to ignore it they like to skip around it he who believes and is baptized will be saved this is the words of Yeshua you know I don't I don't think I want to be one to argue with what he's saying there's something important about it now I'm not saying that getting wet you know getting there's something about water and h2o that somehow causes your salvation I don't think that's what it is I don't think it's just the fact that you got wet but something about the act of obedience in going in and being baptized in the name of Yeshua something about that act of obedience is linked to our salvation and so you know and and the thing is there been a lot of people who have had baptism done to them but they weren't really baptized if does that make sense you know I mean you look at the Catholic churches I mean there's an infant baptisms people baptized all the time but they didn't do it because their faith they didn't do it because they believed they were just going through the motion because that's what the priest did to them you even have people in you know older in life young young adults and even older adults who they're told well you know you need to be baptized so they say okay I'll do it but there wasn't anything sincere about it that it wasn't an act of faith or belief they just did it because they were told to that's not that's not what is talking about it's not just active oh yeah I got dunked in the water something about your saving faith the faith that you have to believe in him that would cause you to say yes I'm going to be baptized all of that together is part of the salvation experience and if you're to say I believe but no I I don't want to be baptized why why not you know what is it what is holding you back and as we look through the different examples especially in the book of Acts you're gonna see that that was not the response of the people in the New Testament their immediate response was where's water I want to get baptized right now so much of the time preaching in American churches is if you want to receive Jesus as your Savior lift your hand everybody close your eyes lift your hand oh I see that hand back in the back all right everybody keep your eyes closed and pray this prayer Jesus I accept you into my heart that's not what we see in the Bible though what we see in the Bible is they say I believe that Yeshua is the son of God and where some water I want to become a disciple I wouldn't be baptized in his name that's what we see over and over throughout the New Testament never wants to see an altar call while they say prayer this prayer and keep your eyes closed so nobody sees you because we don't want you to be embarrassed about it that's not in the Bible what is in the Bible is baptism I've already read Matthew 28 the Great Commission go and make disciples baptizing them in the name of the Father Son the Holy Spirit teaching them to obey everything I've commanded you now in John chapter 13 this is this is kind of interesting and it it's not specifically about baptism but it's connected because of the washings you know and I say it because of the words of Yushu life I feel are significant in what we're talking about in John chapter 13 it's at the meal the the last meal that John records with your shoe and his disciples and Yeshua washes their feet now there's some debate about whether this was the same Last Supper that the Synoptics had you know I don't want to get into that discussion right now whether you think it was or not whatever but at this meal he washed their feet and Peter said to him you shall never wash my feet and jesus answered and said to him if I do not wash your feet I'm sorry if I do not wash you you have no part with me if I do not wash you you have no part with me and so when we're looking at baptism I think that this is a significant thing to keep in mind if he does not wash us they were not part of him and so I think that's why baptism is so significant and why we need to why we need to be aware of that so now let's get into the book of Acts and like I said there are a number of examples in the book of Acts so I'm going to kind of go through these fairly rapidly just to give you a good understanding what we see in the book of Acts so X chapter 1 verse 5 it says for John truly truly baptized with water but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now and so this is the very beginning of the book of Acts pointing to both water baptism and the baptism the Holy Spirit as we read throughout the the rest of the chapter 1 we see that they're all gathered together at Pentecost and the Holy Spirit comes fills them all with all their spirit baptizing them with all the spirit tongues of fire rest on them and then what do they do they immediately go out and they start preaching and this is what Peter says when he's preaching in the street the Peter said to them repent and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and say okay everybody get baptized as an outward sign of an inward no he be baptized for the remission of your sins he's making this act this physical act that we're doing he is tying it directly to what God is doing in wordly he's saying these are connected what God is doing washing away your sins he's doing also on the outward washing you outside as well they're connected for the remission of sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit so he's tying the two together baptism and water and baptism Holy Spirit then those who gladly received his word were bad and that day about three thousand souls were added to them those who received his word were baptized didn't say those who received his word pray to prayer and health at the altar and raised their hand and gave their tithe no they were baptized those who received his word were immediately baptized they didn't say okay we're gonna have a baptismal in six months you guys signed this paper join our membership class we're gonna teach you all the doctrines of the church get you guys very familiar with who we are and if you want to accept our denominational bias then you can come be part of our baptismal in the pool behind me and then you can be one of us that's not what it was said if you want to become a follower of Messiah get baptized if you want to have your sins forgiven and washed away if you want to repent from your sins get baptized wash it away those are the same things we keep seeing Acts chapter 10 so we we know in Acts chapter 10 what happened Peter had his vision of the sheet and the the wild animals on it and a lot of people twist that and say that now we can eat bacon but that's not what it's about and then he goes on and he explains that God showed me not to call any man common or unclean and that I'm to take the gospel to the Gentiles now what happens is he goes and preaches to the Gentiles and they receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit before they got water baptized and so here's the question that comes up he says can anyone forbid water that these should not be baptized to have received the Holy Spirit just as we have and he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord then they asked him to stay for a few days so they did it in the other direction you know we saw what Peter talked about in acts 2 he said be baptized in water and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit but then we see when he went to the Gentiles and Cornelius's place they received the Holy Spirit and then he said okay not I guess you'd better get baptized you've already received the Holy Spirit but you have water baptism yet we need to do that he doesn't say oh well since they received the baptism the Holy Spirit I guess we don't need to baptize him in water he didn't say that he said we can't forbid them water baptism because God hasn't withheld a spear from them let them be baptized in the name of the Lord in water we go on that back up to Acts chapter 8 Philip in the Ethiopian eunuch Phillips walking along and he runs into this Ethiopian guy and the Ethiopians guys reading from the book of Isaiah he asked Philip hey can you explain this to me I don't understand what it's talking about Philip starts to explain it to him ends up preaching the gospel to him and the guy wants to he wants to receive your shoe as his Messiah and so as they went down the road they came to some water and the eunuch said see here is water what hinders me from being baptized Philip didn't say you you know hey we better get you baptized because you can't receive until you are he's just preaching the gospel in the eunuch on his own says hey I want to be baptized here's some water he's not being coerced and in fact Philip he says wait a minute let's not get into big of a hurry if you believe with all your heart you may be baptized is what he says he doesn't say oh yeah we better go do that get you all while you're excited about it I don't want you to change your mind right he says no wait a minute you think about this if you really believe then I'll let you be baptized but I don't want you to do it unless you really believe unless you're really sincere we're not going to just go through the motions on this let's make it count right and so what does the Ethiopian say he answered and said I believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God so he commanded the chariot to stand still and both Philip and the eunuch went down to the water and he baptized him we go to Acts chapter 9 this is Paul's conversion we all know that Paul was a persecutor of the church he hated Christians he was killing Christians and Yeshua stopped him on the road to Damascus knocked him off of his horse blinded him and then told him to go talk to this other guy right so he went to him nice and I see and I Ananias went his way and entered the house and laying his hands on him he said brother Saul the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the road as you came has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit okay immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales and he received his sight at once and he arose and was baptized so when he received so when he had received food he was strengthened he got baptized before he got food do you guys catch that before Paul was blinded on the road to Damascus he went talked to Ananias Ananias prayed for him the scales fell off and he was immediately baptized they he went 8 you see how the priority with which is the biggest priority which is more important right then later on in Acts chapter 22 Paul is retelling this event so this is verse 12 through 16 Paul is retelling this event and he says then a certain Ananias a devout man according to the law having a good testimony with all the Jews who dwelt there came to me and stood and said to me brother Saul receive your sight and at that same hour I looked up at him then he said the god of Our Fathers has chosen that you should know his and that the just one and here see and see the just one and hear the voice of his mouth for you will be his witness to all men of what you have seen and heard and now why are you waiting arise and be baptized and wash away your sins calling on the name of the Lord arise and be baptized and wash away your sins these are the words of Paul explaining his own conversion wash away your sins there's something significant about baptism acts 13 Paul taught about baptism when he went to Antioch from this man's seed according to the promise God raised up for Israel a savior Jesus Yeshua after John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel and as John was finishing his course he said who do you think I am I am NOT he but behold there comes one after me the sandals of his feet I am not worthy to loose we this is almost a quote from the Gospels isn't it we see the same thing in in the Synoptics that john was preaching baptism for repentance and then he said there's one coming after me who's greater than I I'm not worried that untie his sandals acts 16 now a certain woman named Lydia as is verse 14 to 15 there are certain woman named Lydia hurtis she was a seller of purple from the city of Thyatira who worshipped God the Lord opened her heart to heed the things spoken by Paul and when she and her household were baptized she begged us saying if you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord come to my house and stay so she persuaded us so Paul was going there and he was preaching the gospel and Lydia and her household were baptized then we see Paul in prison Paul and Silas were in prison and you guys remember the story they were singing worship songs in the middle of the night that cells open up the guard gets really frantic because he you know he starts panicking thinking they've escaped and he knew his head was on the line for it if they escaped he was gonna be the one to suffer for it and then he finds that they're still there the doors open up and they didn't go anywhere they just sat there and he goes into them and and Paul and Silas preaching the gospel and it says then he called for light ran in and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas and he brought them out and said sirs what must I do to be saved so they said believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved you and your household then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and all who were in his house and he took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes and he immediately fell and as I and immediately he and all his family were baptized sorry it took me a minute to get out I was fumbling he and his family were baptized the the prison guard received Yeshua as his Messiah and he and his entire family got baptized immediately did you guys catch we keep seeing that word immediately the immediate response of faith is find me some water I want to be washed I want to be made clean Paul in Corinth Acts chapter 18 then Christmas the ruler of the synagogue beloved believed on the Lord with all his household and many of the Corinthians hearing believed and were baptized and we're gonna read later in 1st Corinthians that Paul talks about who he baptized in Corinth and he's going to name some of these people but Crispus the rule of synagogue and then his whole household and then other Corinthians Acts chapter 19 Paul and Ephesus and it happened while Apollo's was at Corinth that Paul having passed through the upper regions came to Ephesus and finding some disciples he said to them did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed he's talking to disciples here did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed so they said to him we have not so much as heard as whether there is a Holy Spirit and he said to them into what then were you baptized notice that he is assuming they were baptized he didn't say well were you baptized at all he says into what were you baptized he's making the assumption that they were baptized why because their disciples he's talking to disciples he said into what were you about tais so they said into John's baptism then Paul said John indeed baptized John indeed baptized with the baptism of repentance saying to the people that they should believe on him who would come after him that is on christ jesus when they heard this they were baptized in the name of the lord jesus yeshua and when paul laid hands on them the Holy Spirit came upon them and they spoke with tongues and prophesied so we see again this connection between water baptism and baptism the Holy Spirit and what's interesting here is is he they said they were baptized in John's baptism and then he said okay well you need to be baptized in the name of Yeshua John Andes baptized with the baptism of repentance when they heard this they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus so there's they were baptized twice I've heard a lot of people say oh well you know if you're baptized you know thirty years ago when you were five that's all I need to be baptized again you got baptized right well did what I Paul say did you receive the Holy Spirit at that time into what were you baptized into John's baptism okay well let's talk about this other baptism let's Bab let's get baptized into Yeshua and receive they get to the Holy Spirit right so there is a possibility for more than one baptism it's not just that there's one and done he laid hands on them and the Holy Spirit came upon them Romans chapter six now this is where Paul starts getting a little bit theological with us he's going to start explaining why baptism is significant what is the importance of baptism what does it matter what does it mean in our life Romans chapter 6 verses 1 through 13 and now I know there's a lot of people who don't like Paul especially you know people who misunderstand Paul and they think that Paul teaches lawlessness Paul does not teach lawlessness if you think he teaches lawlessness then you misunderstood him Paul is very easy to misunderstand though and we've got to be cautious when we're reading Paul that we've got to be aware of all the context of the entire Bible and I equate reading Paul on the law is like reading Einstein on physics when you haven't done algebra yet if you don't know how to do basic math you are never gonna understand hein Stein in his theories on physics it's just gonna go way over your head and that's the way it is with Paul Paul is a genius Paul is probably I would say one of the smartest people in the Bible and theologically he has so much depth but unfortunately most of us don't have a high school reading comprehension to understand what he's talking about we have you know we've got to learn more just so that we can better understand what he's talking about and I find that for myself the more I learn about the scriptures the better I understand what Paul's talking about and so I'm not trying to use Paul to understand the Scriptures I'm trying to use the scriptures to understand Paul you know he's just he's he could be so hard to understand sometimes but listen to what he's saying here in Romans chapter 6 this is deep what shall we say then shall we continue in sin that grace may abound certainly not how shall we who died to sin live any longer in it or do you do you not know that as many as a as many as us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death therefore we were buried with him through the baptism into death that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father even so we also should walk in newness of life for if we have been united together in the likeness of his death certainly we also will be in the likeness of his resurrection knowing this that our old man was crucified with him that the body of sin might be done away with that we should no longer be slaves of sin for he who has died has been freed from sin now if we died with Christ we believe that we shall also live with him knowing that Christ having been raised from the dead dies no more death no longer has dominion over him for the death that he died he died to sin once and for all but the life he lives he lives to God likewise you also reckon yourselves to be dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body that you should obey in its lusts and do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead and your members as instruments of righteousness to God and I know that's a big chunk but what are you saying is when you were baptized you are being baptized into the death of a shoe you are going under the water as if you are dying to sin and when you come up out of the water you are resurrecting and you become a new life you go into the water to kill the flesh you come out of the water alive in the spirit that's what baptism is about that's to what Paul is explaining about baptism you're identifying with the death of Yeshua dying to sin killing the sin in your life repenting and washing away your sins right the same things that we've read throughout the Gospels in acts and that when you come up out of the water you are resurrected as a new creature identifying with his death and resurrection I told you Paul is deep man so we go on and Colossians chapter 2 in him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands by putting off the body of sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ buried with him in Baptism in which you also were raised with him through faith in the working of God who raised him from the dead see his same kind of language he's using here and you being dead in your transpose and the uncircumcision of your flesh he has made alive together with him having forgiven you all your trespasses because you were baptized he has forgiven you of your trespasses is what Paul saying having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against you sorry that it was against us which was contrary to us and he has taken it out of the way nailing it to the cross so the handwriting there was against us our condemnation letter right what was saying you are guilty he took that and he nailed it to the cross he took away the thing that condemns us the thing that that convicts us the thing that we would be judged by why because we were baptized into his death or resurrection this is what Paul is saying here he's linking it first Peter we've we've heard from Peter a little bit in acts now let's listen to what Peter says in his letter there is also this is first Peter chapter three verses 21 and 22 there is also an antitype which now saves us now he was he was introducing was talking about the flood in the days of Noah and he talked about some things happen in the days of Noah and then this is what he says right after that there is also an antitype which now saves us baptism not the removal of filth from the flesh but the answer of a good conscience toward god through the resurrection of Jesus Christ through the resurrection of Yahshua who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God angels and authorities and powers having been made subject to him so you see Peter is tying it to the death and resurrection of Yahshua as well it is baptism by when we are baptized in the name of Yeshua what we are essentially saying is I believe in the death and resurrection of Yahshua I'm going down to the water participating in his death coming up out of the water participating in his resurrection it's an acknowledgement and a belief in in faith in the resurrection of Messiah and you know if you want to dig a little bit deeper in that read first Corinthians 15 where Paul basically says if if you're sure wasn't resurrected then we have no hope if there's no resurrection of the dead then there is nothing for us to hope for that is our only hope is in the resurrection and if you're sure didn't raised from the dead then we among all people should be pitied more than anyone that's what Paul says but he says praise be to God that you through it was raised from the dead and we do have hope we have hope in the resurrection 1st Corinthians chapter 1 verses 12 through 16 now I say this that each of you says I am of Paul or I am of apollos or I am of Cephas or I am of Christ is Christ divided was Paul crucified for you or were you baptized in the name of Paul he's talking about divisions in the church right 1st Corinthians he says I hear that their dimension divisions among you and there's quarreling and some are saying well I'm I'm a follower of Paul I'm a follower of Cephas I'm a follower of Apollo's he's talking about they're saying I'm I'm a disciple of Paul I am a disciple of Peter I'm a disciple of Christ they're dividing among themselves saying that who their disciple of and what does Paul say was Paul crucified for you were you baptized in the name of Paul he's basically saying you're not my disciple I made you a disciple of Christ I made you a disciple of Yeshua Messiah you're not a follower of Paul you're as a follower of Yeshua because you were baptized in the name of Yeshua or were you baptized in the name of Paul I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius lest anyone should say that I have baptized in my own name you remember what I talked about earlier that you take on the yoke of the one whom you were baptized in with you're baptized in the name of Yeshua you take on Yeshua's yoke and we're not baptized in the name of Baal I think God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius lest anyone should say that I baptized in my own name yes I also baptized now so just the household of Stephanus but says that i don't know whether i baptized any other we read it just a little bit ago in Acts then when Paul went to Corinth II baptized a lot of people and like I said it mentioned a couple of those people my name but he's he's saying you know just because I baptized you it doesn't mean anything you're baptized name of schewe you're following me sure you're not a follower of Paul and that's back to that baptism being part of discipleship we're not to make I'm not supposed to make disciples Lexx I'm supposed to be making disciples of Yeshua so I don't baptize people in the name of Lex i baptize people in the name of Yeshua why because we baptize people in the name of our God right we baptize him in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit and we direct them to obey His commandments making disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father Son and Holy Spirit commanding them to obey everything that he is commanded teaching them to obey everything he's commanded so we're to make disciples of Yeshua not disciples of ourselves and that's what Paul is talking about because I'm not going around making disciples of myself I'm trying to make disciples of Yeshua maybe you got it backwards maybe you got too confused but you're not my disciple is what he's saying 1st Corinthians chapter 10 moreover brethren I do not want you to be unaware that all of our fathers were under the cloud all passed through the sea all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea all ate the same spiritual food all drank the same spiritual drink for they drank of the spiritual rock that followed them and that rock was Christ was Messiah but he says that they were baptized in Moses into Moses when they passed through the sea so he is identifying the Red Sea crossing as a baptism just as I mentioned earlier it's a type of baptism 1st Corinthians 12 he's talking about the body we are all part of the same body but there's different members having different functions we're not all eyes or we're not all ears that kind of thing so 1st Corinthians 12:12 for as the body is one and has many members but all the members of that body being but all the members of that body that one body being many are one body so also is Christ for by one spirit we were all baptized into one body whether Jews or Greeks we're the slaves of free and have all been made to drink into one spirit for in fact the body is not one member but many we were all baptized he says what we're seeing here is that this is a very significant pattern everyone in the New Testament who believed in Yeshua was baptized all over and over we keep seeing this everyone who believed was baptized and most of them immediately it says were immediately baptized galatians chapter 3 for you are all sons of god through faith in christ jesus for as many as you were baptized for as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ as many as you as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ okay there's neither Jew nor Greek there is neither slave nor free there is neither male nor female for you are all one in Christ Jesus just talking about this common baptism we all share we are all in this together we have all put on Messiah by being baptized into him we are transformed we are we are becoming part of him we are coming into his body we are becoming his disciple we are being cleansed we die to sin we resurrect a new life we are transformed into new beings there's something about baptism why would you show a command it if it wasn't so go and make disciples baptizing them so back in John chapter 3 we see Yeshua and his disciples were baptizing and making disciples that's what we need to be doing too right and so if this message has been important you raise your hand and close your eyes no keep your eyes open if you believe that Yeshua is the Messiah the son of God that he died and resurrected and you haven't been baptized and what are you waiting for talk to me listen let's figure this out we'll find you some water okay there's lots of places we can go and by the way I don't know how much how much weight you put into the dedicate if you guys have ever read it or not I'm not sure what I think about it it's kind of interesting it's supposedly written by the Apostles the Catholic Church really promotes it I don't again I don't know if it's really written by the Apostles or not but if you've read the section on baptism it says baptism should be done in running water and preferably cold water so right now is a great time we could go down to the lake there's some cold water we could we could do this really good if you want but if you if you prefer warm water I bet we could find you some more water someplace - good bow your heads with me
