if you have your Bible the main text today is gonna be Romans 6 but I want to look at a couple other verses too and so when I actually start with Acts chapter 2 and this is today I'm going to be talking about baptism a little bit different I know I talked about it a couple weeks ago I'm gonna be talking about it a little bit differently today with a little bit more today a different angle Acts chapter 2 verse 38 this is after Peter is preaching a sermon or during his sermon he says the Peter said to them repent and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit and so I'm going to start with that verse because I think it leads into what Paul is talking about in Romans 6 he says repent and be baptized for the remission of sins and the word remission there is one that we don't really use a lot in everyday conversation unless you're talking about cancer and so when you have somebody who has cancer you say well is it in remission or not and that's something that's a way that we like to phrase it and I think that's a that's a good way to understand it because sin it acts like a cancer in our lives and so if cancer is in remission that means it's not having an active part it's not actively destroying your life it's not actively corrupting you it's not actively bringing death in your life because that's what cancer does and that's what sin does and so if sin is in remission then that means it is it is not actively destroying your life does that make sense it's not being actively taking over and corrupting your flesh and so he says let every one of you repent and be baptized for the remission of your sins and so that's what I want to talk about today is is the remission of sins the getting sin out of our life and so now I want to turn to Romans chapter 6 and we're gonna actually read quite a bit out of Romans chapter 6 here see if I could put this it in blow okay so in chapter 5 he just talked about how sin entered the world through Adam and that death exile just couldn't read it start with chapter 5 verses 12 therefore just as through one man sent into the world and death through sin and thus death spread to all men because all sinned for until the law sin was in the world but sin is not imputed when there is no law nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam and so I wanted I just go ahead and point that out I had a conversation actually yesterday with James we were talking about how is it possible for somebody to go through life and not sin and therefore not need to repent of anything and I said well they may not actually ever I think it's possible if somebody was to go through life and not actually ever commit a sin they would still have sin in their life it's because of what Paul is talking about right here that even if you don't break any of the commandments in the law you still have sin in your life because of Adam and because we've inherited his sin and so that's why we have all sinned and fall short of the glory of God that's why we are all corrupted flesh and we all need a Savior so there's no one who is righteous enough on their own we all need Yeshua [Music] he goes on in verse 18 he says therefore as through one man's offence judgment came to all men all men resulting in a condemnation even though I'm sorry even so through one man's righteous act the free gift came to all men resulting in justification of life and so I want to skip now to chapter 6 he says what shall we say then shall we continue in sin that grace may abound and this is something that we hear a lot of in what's the word I want to use I I don't want to say lawless churches but churches that are very anti know me and very anti law a very heavy on grace you know it's all about grace and you don't have to do anything to tobei and if you even try to keep one of the commandments then you're throwing grace out the window that's the way some people act but he says what shall we say then shall we continue to sin that grace may abound the idea is that well if God's grace abounds when we sin then we should send more so His grace would abound more it's kind of the attitude I think some people have and I think that's what Paul's addressing here he's not saying that well yeah because God's grace increases because of our sin that doesn't mean our sin should increase because God is so gracious and God's grace is so wonderful we should decrease our sin is but the point Paul is trying to make so what then shall we say shall we continue in sin that grace may abound certainly not how shall we who died to sin live any longer in it or do you not know that as many as us as as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death did you catch that we were baptized into his death now the reason I'm bringing that up because this is this is an important an important piece of the puzzle he says that we have died to sin how can we live in any longer we were baptized into his death and he goes on he says that we will also believe that will also be part of his resurrection I was talking again I was starting to James last night about this so it's really interesting that that it came up last night because we were talking about the judgment and he said so you know how does this judgment the the timeline of the thousand years we have a resurrection we have thousand reign and the judgment and who was all that looked like so when Messiah returns the first jet the first resurrection takes place those who have died in Messiah those who have died in Christ will be resurrected at the first resurrection and they will pass directly into immortality they will be given immortality and bypass the judgment and John chapter 5 Yeshua talks about this so I want to look at that real quick because it ties in with what I'm getting to the point I'm trying to make I know it seems like I'm going off on a rabbit trail but I'm actually tying us together for you to find the verse here okay most of surely this is a John chapter 5 verse 24 most most assuredly I say to you he who hears my word and believes in Him who sent me has everlasting life and shall not come into judgment but has passed from death to life so you sure says if you believe in my words you believe who sent me you will not come to judgment but you will pass directly into everlasting life and so when we look at Revelation when it says that when Messiah returns the first resurrection happens it says blessed are those who are part of the first resurrection for they will they will not they will not die again they will not face a second death and they will not face judgment because they're gonna reign and rule with Messiah for a thousand years and at the end of the thousand years Satan's gonna be released released from his prison there's gonna be a great war the war of Gog and Magog and then fire brimstone are gonna rain down from heaven and destroy those people who rebelled in that rebellion and but those are gonna be people who were not reigning with Messiah and that's one of the things that throws people off there's gonna be people on earth who are not part of the kingdom who are not reigning and ruling with Messiah they're not immortally at that point that's why Satan is able to tempt them into the war of Gog and Magog because those who have been part of Messiah who were part of the first resurrection they're not going to be tempted by Satan because they're gonna be one with him reigning and ruling in his kingdom so it's those outside of the kingdom who war against the kingdom and fire and brimstone rain down and then it says there's gonna be a great white throne judgment and those whose names are written in the book of life get access to the kingdom those whose names are not written in the book of life get cast into the lake of fire it's called the second death Hades and death are also casting like a fire and there's better be no more death no more sin no more torture no more pain no more sorrow all things are new and we're gonna have eternity at that point so back to Roman's how then how shall we continue in sin certainly shall we continue in sin that grace may abound certainly not how shall we who died to sin live any longer in it or do you not know that as many as us as many of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death so James asked last night how is it that we bypassed the judgment how is it that at the first resurrection those who are part of the first resurrection why don't why don't they face judgment because of this right here because we died with Messiah and we are raised to new life in him and so those who are part of Messiah those who belong to Messiah are already given access to the kingdom we're not judged because his righteousness is passed on to us and so Paul uses a phrase that his righteousness is imputed to us that it's not by our own merit but it's by what he did it is given to us as a gift when Paul talks about us being the body of Messiah we're the body of Christ the body of Yeshua he is the head we're his body we are part of him and so we were baptized with him in his death and that is how we gain access to the kingdom without having to face the judgment is that does that make sense is everybody following along with that so we die with him in Baptism and so today as we are gonna be doing a baptism that's something I want you to be thinking about and those of you who have already been baptized this is a reminder we have died to sin we have died with Messiah so that we should no longer live in sin the sin should no longer have reign and rule in our life does that make sense so we are now part of him so we go on therefore we were buried with him through the baptism into death just that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father even so we also should walk in of life a little spider friend on the microphone for if we have been united together in the likeness of his death certainly we will also be in the likeness of his resurrection and so just as he resurrected from the dead we can believe that we will also be resurrected and given eternal life and that's and that's actually what when we do the baptism that's what it symbolizes when you go down into the water you were being buried you are dying you were going under the water of judgment and when you come back up out of the water it is a resurrection in his new life and it's a rebirth so those are all symbolically represented in what we're doing in the baptism that we are dying in the water and we are being raised back up out of the water death and resurrection is symbolized there it's it's kind of a prophetic foreshadow of what Yeshua is going to do with us when we die and were resurrected I'm just as various other things throughout the Scriptures are prophetic for shadows of things that you should did the Passover in Egypt was prophetic foreshadow of Yeshua is death and as the Lamb of God and that he came to save his people from their sins just as he saved them from their sins in Egypt and from their bondage in Egypt excuse me and so I think I've got it is there a bee flying around my head okay I keep feeling something on my neck so where was I for he who has see knowing this that our old man was crucified with him that the body of sin might be done away with that we should no longer be slaves of sin and this is this is another important point that Paul makes before before we come to know Messiah before we are baptized of Messiah before we have the Holy Spirit put in our life we were slaves of sin we could not not sin right we could not stop ourselves from sinning we were sinners we we did have a choice we were slaves to sin so Paul's talking about but when we have the Holy Spirit come into our life when we have put our faith in Yeshua when we are baptized into Yeshua we now have an option we don't have to sin now it doesn't mean that we're gonna be we're no longer gonna be tempted by santur that we're just we're just gonna have the inability to sin it's again what Peter was talking about it's in remission that that cancer is in remission but you can reactivate it if you choose to you can choose to obey sin so we have to make the choice are we gonna obey sinner we're gonna be Messiah and so that is basically what the point this brings us to when we come to faith in in Yeshua we're baptized in him or fill the Holy Spirit we put our trust in him we call him Lord are we gonna do what he says are we gonna obey Him and live a righteous holy life or are we gonna serve a different master Bible says you can't serve two masters Billy to serve one and and despise the other you know that kind of thing if I was to have let's have somebody come up here Tim come here and Jack come here I'm gonna stand up here alright Jack I want you to stand in the middle Tim you stand over there alright Jack let's pretend that Tim is sinn flesh the devil he's trying to get you to do something you're not supposed to do and let's just pretend that I am the voice of the Word of God the voice of the Spirit trying to get you to do what's right okay all right Tim you tell him to do the ops or whatever I tell him okay no don't grab his arm and drag around just just just persuade it all right now Jack at this first example I want you to try to obey both of us all right so Jack I want you to go that way okay now you see how Jack was torn between two different opinions wavering back and forth he didn't know which way to go he didn't know who to listen to he wasn't listening to one master he was trying to listen to two masters now same scenario except Jack I want you to not listen to me at all and just listen to whatever he says okay so Jack I want you to go over there and talk to Isaac Jack go over there Jack go that way okay so now all right thank you so now we have an example of Jack having a single-minded devotion to sin and not listening at all to the voice of the father of the Holy Spirit okay so now let's do one more time and I want you to listen to me and block out anything he says no matter how hard he tries to get you to do something else I want you to only listen to what I say okay Tim go ahead and start all right Jack leave him and go over talk to Isaac all right now you notice as soon as I said Jack go he immediately started walking there was no hesitation there was no debate about whether he was gonna listen to Tim or whether he's gonna listen to me he just immediately went that's the kind of obedience that we need to have with the father as as soon as he says do it we just turn and go don't hesitate don't listen any other voice you go sit down oh thank you guys and so that's the struggle though that we have because so many times we have two voices battling for our attention we have two voices trying to get us to obey and we have to learn to reject one of those voices and obey the other one and the choices which which one of those are we going to reject and which one of those are we gonna obey we can't serve them both if you try to serve them both you won't sue serve either of them you're going to be standing in the middle going which way do I go and really ultimately if you're in that position you're serving Satan because you're disobeying issue ax if you if you find yourself in the conflict between the two and you don't know which way to go and your should i do SAN or should i do righteousness even if you're finding your point where you're hesitating the flesh is winning that battle we used to get to the point where we're not hesitating we just reject sin reject temptation reject the flesh and immediately obey and do what's right and so that's what Paul's talking about you were slaves to sin now you're slaves to righteousness which one are you going to serve you can't serve both and the choice isn't are you gonna be slave are you're gonna be free to do whatever you want that's nobody says you're a slave of one or the other you're either a slave of sin or your slave of righteousness if you think you you're serving yourself and you're being free will you're back in that slave of sin thing okay you've got to choose are you gonna be a slave to sin or slave to righteousness and that's what Paul is talking about here and it's not he's not saying we're earning our salvation though he says you who were baptized in Messiah we're baptized into his death you have died to sin now live as a slave of righteousness he's not saying that you earned your salvation somehow by your obedience to the law that's not at all what he's saying saying you were saved already now obey you call him Lord and Master do what he says that's that's the type of languages Paul is using here and so now if we died with Christ we believe that we shall also live with him actually I skipped a verse sorry verse 7 for he who has died has been freed from sin if we have died we've been freed from sin that's something that is really hard for us to grasp I think sometimes when you have a slave someone who is a slave for life what is the only way that that slave can have freedom death the only way that that slave will find freedom is through death if you're a slave for life the only way you're gonna escape that slavery is through death that's what Paul is saying baptism is a singing baptism you have died to sin you have died in Messiah and you are being resurrected to new life you're being given a new chance and so we have the choice are we going to turn back and go back to our slavery and sin and be reunited with our old master or are we gonna live free from that sin and find our new master and be slaves of righteousness slaves of God that's what Paul is talking about here now if we died with Christ we believe that we shall also live with him knowing that Christ having been raised from the dead dies no more death no longer has dominion over him for the death that he died he died to sin once and for all but the life he lives he lives to God likewise you also reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord reckon yourselves to be dead to sin it's he's talking about a change of your mind how you look at things how you understand things how you approach it you are to reckon in your own mind believe in your own mind that I am no longer a slave of sin I am dead to sin that has to be a mind shift that takes place in our heart in a heart in our mind we have to understand that that is a change this happened we're we are not the same person we were before when you come to faith in Yeshua and you were baptized and you receive the Holy Spirit you are a new creation the Bible says we are a new creation in him that there's new life bringing forth in us that the Holy Spirit is is is giving birth to something inside of us that is conceiving something inside of us new life is springing forth we are not the old person we were previously in our former ways that's the kinds of stuff that Paul is talking about all throughout all of his writings but especially this one forth the dead I'm sorry for the death that he died he died to sin once and for all but the life he lives he lives to God likewise you also reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin just as he has died to sin we also have died to sin with him therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body therefore he's giving us a commission a challenge a responsibility therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body we have been told a huge lie I think probably the biggest lie that we have ever been told is you will always be a sinner you will never be anything but a sinner all we can do is ask for forgiveness and hope that he forgives us because we're never gonna be free from sin we're always gonna be sinners no matter what that is a lie the Bible says that he died to set us free from sin to cleanse us from all unrighteousness and to complete his work making us a new righteous holy people and so we are set free from sin through Yeshua the lie of the enemy is all you can have the best you can ask for forgiveness you're gonna you're just gonna go in sin and just ask for forgiveness again go and say and ask for forgiveness again and that's the best you can hope for that is a lie over and over the scriptures say that we can beat this thing that we can be free from sin that we can live a life of freedom a life of holiness and that that's actually the expected norm if you guys ever realized that the Christianity that we've been taught is a subpar Christianity the bar is set up here it says imitate me because I am a take Christ Paul says that right be imitators of me because I am imitated in Christ Paul says be therefore imitators of Christ John for Sean he says that we should be like him walk as he walked he who claims to be to believe in God yet has sin in his life as a liar they abide in him and you will not sin those are the kinds of things we keep seeing in the scriptures yet the thing that we've been told all our life as well you're just going to be a sinner all your life nothing you could ever do about that all we can do is hope for forgiveness that is a lie you sure want so much more for his people he doesn't want us to just be like everybody else except oh we got forgiven he's called us to be like him weird to be his disciples what does he say about a disciple that a disciple would become like his master he said go make disciples baptizing them in the name of the Father and Son the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey all that I've commanded there's so much in modern Christianity the easy believe isms just come and pray this prayer and get saved and get your sins forgiven and go on your merry way and continue your life the way it's always been it's the attitude so many people have it's not what you shoot at Todd he said that narrow is the way that leads to life and few find it broad is the way that leads to destruction and many go that way the narrow way is the way that we are supposed to be walking on and it's difficult as narrow and few people go that way and we may feel like we're all alone at times the rest of the world saying hey why don't you why don't you do this with us why are you trying to be so righteous and so holy while you're trying to be better than everybody else the narrow path the narrow path is one that leads to life and without getting too specific there are so many things that the world says oh well that's just normal that's normal behavior nothing you could do about that that's actually healthy behavior even sometimes that's what they say but the Bible says no that's not healthy behavior and no it's not normal says those things are sin we have got to learn to listen to the Word of God the Spirit of God and the voice of God not listen to the voice of the enemy who comes in many different ways shapes forms medias authorities there are people who have numerous PhDs who will try to tell you something that is a lie that is not based in Scripture there are people in the media News there are people in school there are people in your job there are people in your home the voice of the enemy comes in a lot of different ways and we've got to learn how to identify and distinguish between the voice of the enemy and the voice of the master which voice are we gonna listen to let's continue on what then shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace we just thank shall we sin because we're not under the law but under grace heaven forbid certainly not right that's what Paul says do you not know that to whom you present yourself as slaves to obey you are that one slaves whom you obey whether of sin leading to death or of obedience leading to righteousness do you know that when we give in to sin and temptation what we are so according to Paul what we're doing is we're saying I'm gonna obey you see it I'm gonna obey you I'll let you be my master but what the wages of sin is death he says sin leads to death the wages of sin is death but we have died to sin so how can we live in an any longer but God be think that though you were slaves of sin you were slaves of sin yet you obeyed from the heart the form of doctrine to which you were delivered and having been set free from sin you became slaves of righteousness I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh for just as you presented your members of slaves own of uncleanness and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness Paul is making a pretty strong case that we can be set free from sin die to sin no longer live in sin and be slaves of righteousness that's the case he's presenting now we have to say well am I gonna believe what Paul says am I gonna believe what Paul says or not for when you were slaves of sin you were free in regard to righteousness and what fruit did it have I'm sorry and what fruit did you have then in the things which are now ashamed for the end of those things as death but now having been set free from sin and having become slaves of God you have your fruit to holiness and the end everlasting life for the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life and you show our Messiah if we look at the book of first John John defines sin for us he says sin is lawlessness right if you've been set free from sin then what does that mean that you no longer lawless right if sin is breaking the law and you've been set free from breaking the law then what do you do you start obeying the law you start keeping the law you uphold it you're no longer break it and so that's kind of what Paul is saying here so when you were slaves of sin you were free in regard to righteousness when you're a slave of sin you didn't serve righteousness you were free from righteousness because you were servants you were serving sin but now that the opposite is true now that you've been set free from sin you're free from sin you no longer do it you are now slaves of righteousness you see that see the difference that's the argument he's making over here first John real quick and I think first John I think John really kind of nails nails it with this one but so whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness and sin is lawlessness and you know that he man he was manifested to take away our sins he was manifested to take away our sins he was not manifested to just forgive our sins he was manifested to take away our sins to get rid of them to purge them from our life to put them in remission to destroy their grip on our life to break the bonds of slavery did you get what it's saying here he wasn't sent just to forgive sins yes he has the power and ability to forgive sins that's not the only reason he was sent it wasn't just to forgive us it was to save us from sin to destroy sins work in our life you're following along so far have I said anything you guys disagree with as I have I say anything that disagrees our scripture I'm pretty much just reading the scripture to you honestly just kind of give him putting it in my own words but saying exactly what they're saying whoever abides in him does not sin whoever sins has neither seen him or known him whoever abides in him does not sin little children let no one deceive you he who practices righteousness is righteous just as he is righteous he who sins is of the devil for the devil has sinned from the beginning for this purpose the Son of God was manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil whoever has been born of God does not sin for his seed remains in him and he cannot sin because he has been born of God I don't know that I've ever heard that verse preached from the pulpit on Sunday thirty years of Christianity I don't think I have ever heard that verse preached from the pulpit whoever has been born of God does not sin what I have heard is well we're all sinners say bye grace good thing we're forgiven we're always gonna be sinners and there's nothing we can do about that nothing anybody can do about that there's something that you sure can do about that there is something you sure can do about that but we have to let him do that work in our life we have to join him in doing that work in our life we have a part to play in that it's not passive we don't just sit back and say okay you sure make me holy I'm here no we have to actively obey actively resist temptation actively seek and pursue righteousness actively listen to his voice and what John says is abide in him to remain and him to stay in him to be with him at all times right and it's when we stray from him is when we end up with the problems I'm going to get into Romans seven just slightly or do you not know brethren for I speak to those who know the law that the law has dominion over man as long as he lives what do we just read in Romans chapter six then in Baptism we died with Messiah right Nepal is continuing that thought he just built his case for our death we died to sin the former master who previously had ownership of us we've died to Santa Paul says don't you know that the law has dominion over man as long as he lives for the woman who has a husband is bound by law to her husband as long as he lives but if the husband dies she is released from the law of her husband so then if while her husband lives she marries another she'll be called an adulteress better for husband dies she is free from that law so she is no longer in adulteress though she has married another man therefore brethren you have also become dead to the law through the body of Christ that you may be married to another to him who has raised from the dead that we should bear fruits to God for when we were in the flesh the sinful passions which were aroused by the law we're working our members to bear fruit to death but now we have been delivered from the law having died to what we were held previously held by so that we should serve in the newness of the spirit not in the oldest of the letter we have died to sin that's chapter 6 he's been building this case we have died to sin so we are no longer bound by that master now we have been given the opportunity to be united with Messiah as his bride him is our master him is our Lord well shall we say that as the loss in certainly not on the contrary I would have not known sin except through the law for I would have I would not have known covetousness except the law it said do not covet but sin taking opportunity by the commandment produced in me all manner of evil desires for apart from the law sin was dead but I was once alive without the law when the commandment came sin revived and I died and the commandment which was to bring life I found to bring death for sin taking occasion by the commandment sin taking occasion by the commandment deceived me and by it killed me therefore the law is holy in the commandment holy and Justin good has then what is good become death to me certainly not but sin that it might appear sin was producing death of me through what was good so the sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful for we know that the law is spiritual but I am carnal sold under sin for what I am doing I do not understand for what I will to do that I do not practice but what I hate that I do if then I do not do what I want to do I agree that the law is good but now it is no longer I who do it but sin who dwells in me for I know that in me that is in my flesh nothing good dwells for to will is present with me but how to perform what as good is actually I do not find for the good that I want to do I do not do but the evil that I will not to do that I practice now if I do what I do not want to do it is no longer I who do it but sin who dwells in me I think I find then a law that evil is present within me the one who do who wills to do good for I delight in the law of God according to the inward man but I see another law in my members warring against the law of my mind and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which isn't my members a wretched man that I am who will deliver me from this body of death I thank God through Jesus Christ Yeshua Messiah our Lord so that when the my so that with the mind I myself serve the law of God but with the flesh the law of sin okay so that is one of those passages that we got into a big discussion about in in college in one of my theology classes so was Paul saying that he presently struggles with sin in his life and the he does what he doesn't want to do and what he wants to do he doesn't do was he telling about how his present struggles with sin in his life he couldn't figure out how to master was that what he was talking about what was he talking about I previously that's how it was but thanks be to God he's found freedom from it and so there was a big debate about what that was talking about personally I think he was talking about how previously he had struggles with it but now that he found you sure he didn't have that struggle anymore because he's making the case in other place he talks about how he was a Pharisee of Pharisees a righteousness according to law he was flawless he he was the the leading Pharisee he was studied under Gamaliel he was like next in line to be the head rabbi pretty much extremely well-trained extremely well disciplined extremely intelligent and he says I count all of that rubbish compared to knowing Yeshua my Messiah compared to knowing as sure as Lord said I counted all rubbish there's therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the spirit now this is one of those verses that people like to quote half of it those there's therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus and they stop right there they don't like to finish the verse but says who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the spirit this is one of those important hinges that you've got to get the whole verse to understand the context so that you can grasp it's meaning to be in basically he's defining to be in Christ Jesus those who are in Christ Jesus are those who do not walk according to the flesh but they walk according to the spirit that's how he's defining it for us that's what it means to be in Messiah Yeshua is to be someone who does not walk according to the flesh for the law of the spirit of life isn't Christ has made me free from the law of sin and death for what the law could not do that in that it was weak through the flesh God did by sending his own son in the likeness of sinful flesh on account of sin he condemned sin in the flesh that the righteous requirement of law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the spirit he said the exact same thing again that the righteous requirement of the law would be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the spirit for those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh but those who live according to the spirit the things of the Spirit now back up just a second in Romans chapter 7 he says we know that the law is spiritual but I am carnal right he just told us that in Romans 7 I know that the law is spiritual by I am carnal sold under slavery to sin now we're about to get to something in Romans 8 that that ties in with that for those who live according to flesh have their mind set on the things of flesh but those who live according to Spirit have their mind set on the things of spirit for to be carnally minded is death but to be spiritually minded is life and peace because the carnal mind is enmity against God for it does not subject to the law of God for it is not subject to the law of God nor indeed can it be the carnal mind is an enemy of God because it is not subject to the law of God let's catch that so to be are we spiritually minded or we carnally minded do we have our mind set on the things of the flesh or the things of the Spirit are we living according to the flesh are we living according to the spirit so then those who are in the flesh cannot please God back to that lie again all we're gonna be as sinners we're never gonna be anything else but just a forgiving sinner right Paul says those who are walking in the flesh those who are walking in sin cannot please God because you're a carnally minded not spiritually minded but you're walking according to the flesh and not according to the spirit if all we can ever hope for is forgiveness and we're never gonna have freedom is it is what what's the point right it's like saying oh I forgive you of your debt you owe 10 million dollars I forgive you of your debt but you're gonna keep making payments to me for the rest of your life wait a minute I thought I thought I was forgiving to that debt I thought it was done away with no no it's not done away with I just forgive you for accruing that debt you're still gonna pay for it you're still going to continue serving that debt for the rest of your life you're still gonna be bound to it bound in chains slaving away day in and day out to pay off this debt that you have accrued but I forgive you for accruing it what you're still gonna pay for it that's basically what we're saying when we say that what he didn't save us from sanh he didn't take away our sins he didn't set us free from sin he didn't break the chains of sin in our life all he did was forgive us it's almost doesn't even make sense it's like what is the point of that if I'm not free from it then what does forget what good is forgiveness because I'm just gonna have to keep coming back for more I better make sure I ask for forgiveness right before I die because what if I sinned between the last time I asked for forgiveness and the time I die I might not be forgiven for that sin right it's not just forgiveness he brings us new life brings us freedom following along as everybody all right therefore verse I guess skip to edges a little bit let's start the first night but you are not in the flesh but in the spirit if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ he is not his and if Christ is in you the body is dead because of sin but the Spirit is life because of righteousness but if the spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his spirit who dwells in you therefore brethren we are debtors not to the flesh to live according to the flesh for if you live according to the flesh you will die but if by the spirit you put to death the deeds of the body you will live we read in other places it says do not love the world or the things of the world right for the love of the world is enmity against God it's a it's an opposition to God the things of the world the ways of the world I mean it's I've heard people talk about how the the kingdom of God is an upside-down kingdom really the kingdom of God is right-side up at the world is what's upside-down the kingdom of God says that we are to be humble the world says if you're humble you're gonna get walked on the kingdom says that we're to be kind the world says you know what point is what's the point of being kind to others they're not gonna be kind to you right the kingdom says that we're supposed to love our enemies do good to those who persecute us forgive those who offend us the world says take with them they don't like me why would I like them you know they are in opposition to one another so if you are loving the things of the world then you are standing in opposition to the kingdom of God therefore brothers we are debtors not to the flesh to live according to the flesh we're debtors to the spirit we're debtors to righteousness with debtors to Yeshua our master I was just gonna talk about Romans six and somehow I ended up going through seven and eight and so sorry if you guys don't like Romans you're probably disappointed let's look at Colossians there we go Russians chapter 2 starting verse 6 as you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord so walk in him rooted and built up in him and established in the faith as you have been taught abounding in it with Thanksgiving yep beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit according to the tradition man according to the basic principle ''tis principles of this world and not according to Christ for in him dwells the fullness of the Godhead bodily and you are complete in him who is the head of all principality and power you are complete in him you are incomplete without him apparently but you are complete in him in him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands by the putting off of the body of sins of the flesh how many of you guys have heard about the circumcision of the of the of the heart we're supposed to be circumcised in the flesh and circumcised in the heart right so what Paul is talking about the circumcision of the heart the circumcision made without hands and what is he saying that is how does he described that by the putting off of the body of sins of the flesh getting rid of sin is the circumcision of the heart you get that so just Azhar in the flesh we're circumcised is the cutting away of flesh circumcision of the heart is the cutting away of flesh right the sins of the flesh the lust of the flesh that the thoughts of the flesh the pursuit of the flesh buried with him in Baptism in which you were also raised with him through faith in the working of God so we're circumcised in the heart circumcised with the circumcision made without hands and buried with him in Baptism you were also raised with him through the faith of the working of God who raised him from the dead and you being dead in your trespasses and having and the circumstance incision of your flesh he has made alive together with him having forgiven all your trespasses having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us which was contrary to us and he has taken it out of the way having nailed it to the cross having disarmed the principalities and powers he has made a public spectacle triumphing over them in it sorry I had a spider in my Bible triumphing over it so let no one judge you in food or drink and regarding a festival or new moon or Sabbath which are a shadow of things to come but the substance of Christ that's not really part of what I was going to say but some people want to say that that's talking about well don't let anybody tell you you need to keep the sabbath of the feasts that doesn't make any sense talking to a bunch of Gentiles and saying don't let anybody judge you until you need to keep the feasts you Gentiles you've never kept the feast before no and don't let anybody judge you and how you keep the feasts or tell you not to keep the feasts because you're not a Jew right we have that today we we have Messianic Jews we're saying well if you're Gentile you shouldn't be keeping the Sabbath of the feasts really why are we not grafted in are we not one with Israel have we not become fellow citizens heirs and co-heirs with Christ are we not natural-born citizen have we not become like natural-born citizens what advantage then do you have over us right that's argument Paul is making in Ephesians and Romans 11 Ephesians chapter 2 we have become natural born citizens we've become heirs we've become part of his people I'm almost done Colossians 3:1 sortin if then you were raised with Christ seek those things which are above where Christ is sitting at the right hand of God set your mind on things above not on things of the earth for you died and your life is hidden with Christ in God when Christ who is our life appears then you also will appear with him in glory okay if you've died with him you've been baptized with him you've been buried with him your sins have been put to death set your mind on things above where he is not on the things of this earth the things of this earth pass away the things of this earth are rotten and corrupted the things of this earth are going to be destroyed there's nothing on this earth ultimately that matters in the big scheme of things people like to pursue money you can't take it with you when you die people want to get big houses and fancy cars you can't take it with you when you die you're not bringing it with you into the kingdom when you're resurrected he's not gonna resurrect your car right it's not gonna happen you're probably gonna be walking now hopefully we'll get to fly that that's when I think it'd be cool say you know you're sure he ascended up into heaven so I think he flew and it says we're gonna have a body like him so I just imagined we could fly too that's what I'm that's my hope and I hope we'll get to fly that'll sure make transportation nice was that oh yeah yeah yeah the spirit moves like the wind yeah exactly okay so he says seek the things above not the things below therefore put to death your members which are of which are on the earth fornication uncleanness passion evil desire and covetousness which is idolatry because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience in which you were you yourselves once walked when you lived in them he said this past tense you used to walk in these things you used to be part of them but it's less in the past now you died to those things and so as we were as we are going to be doing baptism today I want you to keep this in mind you were dying to sin and those of you who have been baptized before you have died to sin you did you died to sin stop living in it how can we who died to sin live in sin any longer it's what Paul is arguing and so as we are we are doing baptisms today we're having a funeral we are putting sin to death we are crucifying the flesh we're gonna have some burials today when you come up out of the water leave that old man behind right you are you are being transformed into something new a new creation therefore put to death your members which are on the earth going to verse 8 but now you yourselves are to put off these to put off all of these anger wrath malice blasphemy filthy language out of your mouth now you're to put these away it's a responsibility he's giving to us you are to put these away you were to stop these things anger wrath malice blasphemy filthy language do not lie to one another since you have put off the old man with his deeds and it put on the new man who is renewed and knowledge according to the image of him who created him where there is neither Greek nor Jew circumcised or uncircumcised barbarian Scythian slave or free but Christ is all and in all yeah I'm gonna go and do this I was gonna skip it but now I'm go I'm gonna go ahead and did verses 16 through 25 let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with Psalms hymns and spiritual songs singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord and whatever you do in word or deed do it in the name of the Lord Jesus giving thanks to God the Father through him whatever you're doing word or deed do it all to his glory wives submit to your own husband's as is fitting in the Lord husbands love your wives and do not be bitter towards them children obey your parents in all things for this is well pleasing to the Lord fathers do not provoke your children lest they become discouraged bondservants obey in all things your masters according to the flesh not with eyeservice as men pleasers but in sincerity of heart fearing god and whatever you do do it heartily as if to the Lord and not to men knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance for you serve the Lord Christ but he who does wrong will be repaid for what he has done and there's no partiality masters give your bondservants what is do or what is just and fair knowing that you also have a master in heaven he's talking about how we should live as redeemed people as transformed people right we have been set free by the blood of Yeshua the Lamb of God Passover is coming up next week right around the corner Passover is the celebration of deliverance is the celebration of freedom our freedom from sin came through Yeshua's death and resurrection and we as Paul says when we are baptized we are baptized into his death we put our old sinful nature to death we crucify sin in our life and we come out of the water resurrected as a new person as a new creation all right are you guys ready to get wet you guys ready to get out in the ice-cold water and kill and kill the sin that's in there I think that's why it takes cold water right gotta freeze it out no we go ahead and close in prayer and then we'll start making our way down to the beach area now we're gonna do some baptisms whoever is interested and if you know if you for some reason weren't planning on doing it and now you've changed your mind let me know we'd be glad to accommodate you with that if you were gonna do it and you change your mind it's too late you can't back out you still got to do it with your bare hands with me father we love you so much we praise you we thank you for salvation in Yeshua our Messiah lord I pray that lives would be transformed that you would put to death our sin nature the two had crucified sin in our life and they would be raised out of the water as new create this new creation new creatures that we would be filled with your Holy Spirit Lord that we pray that you would touch everyone here that you would fill us all with your Holy Spirit that you would lead us and guide us and your truth help us to walk in your ways help us to resists and to put off to put a push away sin out of our life to reject it and to turn away to resist it to seek you first to abide in you to walk in you to live our life in a way that pleases you father we praise you we thank you in the name of Yeshua amen [Music]
