everybody it's Leroy from Lira gaming and in today's Baldur's Gate 3 guide we are going to be looking at the oath of devotion subclass for the Paladin in this video we're going to cover features at level 1 of character creation including ability recommendations I'm going to give you a full level 2 to 12 breakdown as well as go over all spells available as you level up later on give you General equipment recommendations and my commentary on thoughts when it comes to multi-classing as the oath of devotion Paladin it can use the timestamps below to jump to an area that most interests you remember to drop a like and leave a comment below with thoughts feedback and questions and I without further Ado let's look at the oath of devotion Paladin thank you all right level one it's important to note that paladins have a primary ability of strength in your saving throw proficiencies earn wisdom and Charisma your hit dies are 1d10 health so you have more Health than just about anybody except for barbarians and you have proficiency of all weapons as well as all armor and shields now the features you get are level one not counting your oath of devotion but off the bat is the ability to channel your oaf that's going to refresh every short or long rest you start one charge and you'll get more as you level up and the abilities you get to use of this will depend on your subclass and you'll you get lay on hands which will scale as you level up this is the best way for you to heal again it's an action and it's going to use your lay on hand charges and then you're gonna get Divine sense it isn't a bonus actually can use that lasts for two turns you get an advantage on Attack rules against celestials fiends and Undead tons of all these uh creatures that you're going to be fighting throughout this game so very helpful picking the off of devotion you're gonna get the holy rebuke effect this is your specific Channel oath ability you can use a level one which grants an ally eventful aura that deals one to four radiant damage to anyone who hits them with a melee attack and it lasts for two turns and your subclass feature here oath of devotion tenant you want to read this over because if you were to break these rules here you can actually lose the ability to cast Paladin spells and to be an oath of devotion Paladin this would lead you to be an oath breaker Paladin and you can find videos and guides on that Elsewhere on how to get that and what it implies but it's a more Undead focused and more quote unquote evil Paladin I guess you could say and then when it comes to your stats I recommend 16 strength 10 dexterity since you're going to be using heavy armor 14 Constitution eight intelligence 10 wisdom and 16 charisma at level two you're gonna get two level one spell slots and most importantly you're gonna gain the Divine Smite ability that can be used as an action as a reaction and also here's the information on it when you critical you will also get the following spells that I will Mouse over however it is very common for most paladins to use the majority if not all of their spell slots on Divine smites is you do utilize spell slots to utilize divine smites the potential exception is if you want to up your AC for example you may put one time one slot towards Shield of Faith which does also require concentration or potentially bless you're more likely to hit with you and your party you're also going to gain a fighting style the most popular option is probably defense you get a plus one to your armor class bonus while you wear any form of armor now dueling is an option if you want to go with a one-headed weapon and a shield basically and this will give you a plus two damage on all your attacks great weapon fighting basically lets you re-roll if you roll it one or two on a damage die for attacking over two-headed melee weapon it's okay it increases your damage by a bit potentially about 15 on average but I do think defense is probably better and here's protection I recommend against this because it basically promotes you grouping your characters up really close together which is not great in this game as the AI loves to use AOE attacks and throw bombs at you when you Bunch up now similar to clerics you're going to prepare spells you're going to start with the ability of getting five spells from the options that you choose but you're obviously not going to get nearly as many spells to choose from and as many spell slots either as the cleric at level three you're gonna get one more level one spell slot and you're gonna become immune from disease you're gonna get the sacred weapon action as one of your channel oaf options as well as turn the Unholy and then you're gonna get similar to clerics two of spells are going to be always available for you that is protection from evil and good and sanctuary Sanctuary is good but as I mentioned level one you're likely to use most of your spell slots on Divine smite and you can now memorize six spells instead of five at level four you're gonna get an additional lay on hands charge you're gonna get to prepare up to seven spells and you're gonna get access to feats now paladins can really benefit from having high strength High Charisma potentially and also Constitution is also quite important since you're likely to be a frontliner so ability Improvement is going to be big for this character if you are going to use one of your spell slots for channel ability to increase your AC or increase your attack for example you may want to get War Caster the main aspect of warcaster that we like is you're going to gain advantage on saving throws to maintain concentration on a spell this is important because anytime you take damage if you're concentrating on a spell you have to make a save and if you fail you basically lose that spell and that effect the other super powerful feat that you may want to take if you're going to focus on a two-handed weapon is great weapon Master the main effect here is if you crit or if you kill an enemy of a melee weapon attack you can make another melee weapon attack as a bonus action that turn very powerful and also you get the passive ability as long as you're using a heavy melee weapon meaning a big two-hander that you are proficient with you can deal an additional 10 damage at the cost of a minus five attack penalty that is a huge damage boost level 5 is huge for paladins you're going to get one level one spell slot two level two spell slots and then you're gonna get an extra attack so now you can have two main attacks per round your oaf spells are gonna be less of a restoration and silence they can always have and here are the difference other spells that you can have do note if you use level two spell slots for your Divine Smite you're gonna do double the Divine Smite damage so you're likely to use all these new spell slots for divine smites and you can also now prepare eight spells at level six you're gonna get the aura of protection so you and your number allies gain a bonus to your saving throws and this is based off whatever your charisma modifier is so here it's bugged when you see it says plus zero but even when you have 16 Charisma it'll be plus three do note you have to go to your passive tab at the bottom of the screen and activate this even though it's permanent once you activate it I don't know why it starts deactivated so make sure you do that so you don't waste a lot of time running around without this effect you're also going to now be able to prepare up to nine spells at level seven you're gonna get another level two spell slot and you're gonna get Aura of devotion so you and your nearby allies can't be Charmed the aura disappears if you fall unconscious and you're gonna now be able to prepare ten spells at level eight you're gonna be able to prepare 11 spells and you're gonna get another feed option at level 9 you're gonna get two level three spell slots to again use for level 3 smites or you can use it on any of these spells right here feel free to pause to read the details and you also get two of spells that are always available and memorized and you can now prepare 12 spells across level one two and three at level 10 you're gonna get another lay on hands charge and you're gonna get RF critch you and any nearby allies can't be frightened now so this is so now you can't be Charmed or frightened and you get a big saving through a modifier so very very powerful and you can now prepare 13 spells at level 11 you're going to get another level three spell slot and you can improve Divine smite so melee weapons attacks deal an additional one to eight radiant damage automatically and then you can prepare 14 spells and then finally level 12 you're going to be able to prepare 15 spells and you're gonna get your final feed to choose from now when it comes to equipment for a paladin for your offense you have one of two ways you can go one-handed and a shield if you want to maximize your armor class and again just find whatever the best Shield you can get preferably plus three armor or a good plus two armor look for other effects that are going to be helpful I the best long sword or one-handed weapon you can there's a lot of different options there for you armor you definitely want to go with plate armor and so your goal is going to be to have 19 or 20 AC and again look for any effects that are helpful and act 3 you can pick a Birthright if you want to up your charisma or pick up any of the other really good helmets that are just gonna help with your DPS output I love Legacy of the Masters here that's gonna just up your attack and damage rolls but again there's a variety of different gloves that can either add to your plus damage directly like this that will help your attack and damage or just damage rolls a lot of different boots I like these hell dust boots because they make it so that you can't be forcibly moved so don't have to worry about being pushed off cliffs Etc and then jewelry find whatever is going to help you out either by adding other special other spell effects or something like dispelsive on amulet that gives you extra spell slots the more spell slots you can get the more smites you can use so that can always be helpful on this character I don't have a cloak of protection on right now but that's probably the Simply the Best cloak you can get or you can get something that's going to give you a different spell effect like this nymph cloak dominate person anything that can help you control the battlefield is also very helpful and then for bows you can do something that is going to help with your stats like the dark fire bow that here gives you multiple resistances and also lets you cast haste which again more attacks for a paladin is ridiculously good now when it comes to multi-classing for paladins I feel like paladins are extremely powerful just going solo class but you can take him to a whole nother level if you multi-class I would say probably the most famous combination is combining them with warlocks where you can go full Charisma build and use the pact of the blade so that you can use Charisma for your attacks as well as your spell casting so you can ignore strength you could also combo the Paladin with the sorcerer if you wanted to get more spell slots for even more Smite so those are two really popular combinations for you to start out on all right guys that brings us to the end of my guide for the oath of devotion subclass for the Paladin I hope you found it helpful if you did make sure to drop a like leave your comments below of your thoughts and as always appreciate all your support and I will see you guys in the next video foreign
