mind flares commonly known as the lithids are one of the most iconic and terrifying creatures in the Dungeons and Dragons universe and in Baldur Escape 3 they're seemingly bound to serve as one of the primary antagonists that we'll be facing as we make our way across faerun but what are these mysterious beings and what makes them so universally feared let's delve deep into the world of the Forgotten Realms and Beyond to unravel the Enigma that is the Mind flare the exact origin of the Mind flares is shrouded in mystery some ancient tomes hint that they hail from the far future While others suggest they come from the far realm a distant chaotic Dimension Beyond known space and time regardless of their Origins one thing is clear mind flares once had a sprawling Empire the likes of which the Multiverse had rarely seen this Empire's vestiges can still be found in the dark corners of the underdark a sprawling Subterranean network of caverns and tunnels at first glance mind flares might be mistaken for humans but a closer look reveals their truly alien nature standing around six feet tall these humanoid creatures have purplish blue slimy skin that glistens in dim light their heads are elongated and octopus-like crowned with four tentacles that dangle around their mouths their eyes pale white or milky offer a window into an emotionless Abyss devoid of empathy warmth however in the case of Baldur's Gate 3 we see the Mind flare sporting terrifying orange eyes for a reason that is still unknown as of making this video Mind flares have a unique and horrifying dietary requirement brains to feed they grapple their prey using their tentacles to pull the victim's head toward their waiting maw then with terrifying Precision they bore into the skull extracting and consuming the brain this Macabre meal doesn't just satiate hunger it's an essential requirement without the brains a mind flare will weaken and eventually die it's this terrifying dietary need that drives much of their interaction with other species perhaps the most defining trait of the Mind flare is their potent psychic abilities they communicate primarily through telepathy and their minds are fortified weapons capable of stunning dominating or even obliterating the thoughts of others mind flares aren't solitary creatures they live in colonies often hidden deep within the underdark at the center of every mind flare settlement lies the Elder brain this massive sentient brain floats in a brine-filled pool collecting the memories and experiences of every illithid that passes on in many ways the Elder brain is the hearts and soul of a mind flare Community offering guidance and serving as a repository of collective knowledge within their colonies mind flares follow a strict hierarchy above the regular mind flares are the ilethorates or Noble illithids who possess even greater psychic abilities and are few in number they're often seen as potential seeds for new colonies as they can mature into new Elder brains the life cycle of a mind flare is both intricate and horrifying they reproduce by depositing tadpoles which are later implanted into captive humanoid hosts over for a week the tadpole consumes the victim's brain replacing it and eventually transforming the host into a new mind flare and a gruesome process known as serramorphosis mind flares are often at odds with other races driven by their need for brains and a belief in their own superiority the relationship with other species is predominantly one of predator and prey however occasionally illithids will dominate and enslave other creatures using their psychic prowess one such enslaved race is the Grimlocks blind humanoids that serve the Mind flares in exchange for protection and sustenance while mind flares have numerous enemies perhaps their most dangerous adversaries are the gith a race that once was enslaved by the illithids but Rose in Rebellion shattering the Mind flayer Empire the gith are now split into two factions githyanki and githzerai both of which harbor deep-seated animosities toward their former oppressors the Mind flares with their terrifying appearance insatiable hunger for brains an unmatched psychic abilities stand out as one of the most fearsome entities in the DND Multiverse whether you encounter them as an adventurer in the gloomy caverns of the underdark or hear Tales of their dread in a surface World Tavern the Mind flares are bound to leave an indelible mark on your imagination thank you for watching this video and do remember to like it if you well like this little lore video and of course subscribe if you want to see more content like this and a massive shout out and thank you to all my antsman squad members for supporting the channel have a great day everyone Mr Alton signing out
