[Music] right here on this rod that's a live bluegill on there that just got eaten yup yup he's on there time to start this video y'all i wasn't sure we're starting it today i've been on the water an hour nothing going on that's the first bite but i've got me four baits down there two of them live and two of them cut and i'm sitting right now where a creek comes out right here toward the main channel anchored down 28 feet and the right side of my kayak over here have live bluegills suspended just a couple feet off the bottom so they're down there 25 26 feet deep it's the flathead small flat head there to start our trip i'll take it on the left side of my kayak over here as i was saying has cut skip jack so we're doing a live bait versus cut bait kind of day and the live bait's the first one to catch a fish okay let's bring him in tell you i've set here an hour not even so much as a dink tap man i'm like i'm in the wrong place at the wrong time again but at the spot like this let me get this thing unhooked here i'll talk a little bit about where i'm at take my hoodie off here too it's cold out here this morning we're into may but it's a little chilly out here there he is a little small flathead gave me a good time though ate that live bluegill that was one of my bigger bluegill it was probably in that six seven inch range there he is let's send him home get out of here but you can probably see behind me here there's a creek that goes back in here and loops around and i'm out here kind of at the entrance of it where it dumps off into the main channel where the old uh creek channel before they flooded all this to make the reservoir where it kind of comes out and so there's a point that comes this way and then i've got this little island here that comes out and so fish that are working in now this creek kind of get funneled through this area here and so that's why i've got my bait suspended here i'm just kind of forcing them fish as they come in and out to go through my baits and there's an easy mill that's waiting on them but left side of the kayak over here i've got a skipjack head and a skipjack midsection frozen skipjack today i've been lazy he went out there and got after the skipjack i've been doing the carp fishing and some bass fishing and some other things and that's cut into my skipjack fishing only so many hours in the day you know and a lot of fishing that i want to do but nevertheless i've always got skip jack in the freezer for a rainy day or for a lazy day like uh today is but anyway that's on the left side and i've got another live bluegill here about to put another one on this rod now my plan is to stay out here today till 11ish or noon i'm official about lunchtime i got on the water had lines in right at seven a.m and i don't know what time it is now i know it's 8 25 so i've actually been out here about an hour and a half with nothing going on all right guys there's the next bait going down live bluegill that's one of my smaller baits but i only brought six live bluegill with me and the one that got eaten was the only one that had any kind of size to it the rest of them are kind of that size there kind of four or five inch range but i just wanted to come out here today and and kind of put out a variety just put some cut bait versus live bait and see which out performs the other well this rod right here got that's on that skip jack mid section well he thumped it oh he swam out with it i thought he'd let it go he'd just swam out that way with it yeah buddy well that's a two fish back to back here some fish working through you put in time to spots like this these you know creek mouths and such the fish will eventually work through it's just a matter of timing it will you be on the water when they pass and when they become active and the more time you can put in the more likely you are that's a that's a fun size blue right there buddy now he's going to show up look at him oh he's fired up i'm gonna give him a little bit more slack there yeah fish hit the bait i felt him thump i turned around i thought maybe he'd let it go but he went out that way with the bait i'm gonna tire him out just a second more before he before i bring him in here because he's liable to act a fool when he gets up in this kayak and i sure don't want him thrashing around like that and the floor of this boat he's gonna pull again a little more i knew he wasn't done he's just showing out what i didn't want to happen i tried to play him out a little bit so that he'd be calmer when he come in this kayak i didn't want him thrashing around like that he threw the water up there toward the camera hopefully it ain't water all over the lens and now he will not open his mouth he's going down oh come on open up now acting a fool up here man just showing out that's a good time i like it when they fight that hard some some of them do that and some of them you know they just they just quit on you listen here didn't quit even once we got him in here i'm going to get the pliers on this hook there we go they threw the bait off that's fine we'll put a little more how about that i'll tell you worth the wait i put in some time waiting on the fish to get active but that's a flat head now this blue back to back and you know again i've been on the spot an hour and a half to get these two fish but it's just a it's a waiting game you know if i could come out here and anchor down 30 minutes not get a bite i could go hit another spot but you got a lot of down time doing that you know it takes time to pull in your anchor reel in your baits travel to the next spot meanwhile you know fish in the time you were doing that going next spot that could have been the time the fish come through an area like this so i just soon waited out but anyway there's that fish it was a good time now let's send him home get out of here there you go well i didn't measure that fish all i didn't bring my board with me we're into may now i'm not competing in any tournaments this month and that's the only reason i bring aboard or measure fish is just when i'm in tournaments now last month's uh slot tournament there with kct for those of you always following along i did win that tournament uh got first place and it was two i think it was like 280 something 290 something almost 300 dollars i won in that tournament so nice payday but uh didn't really want to compete again this month because i'm tired of measuring fish i'm tired of carrying that board around with me i just want to come out and catch some fish and and not fool with all that extra stuff so taking this month's tournament off there for may uh may jump back in in june or july you know we'll just see how it goes but anyway that's a little update on that i'm gonna cut another piece of this skipjack up and one of the questions i get asked a lot about skipjack and other baits as far as freezing baits for for later use um it's how i do it and what baits i use and so skip jack is the only bait i freeze nothing else because skipjack's really the only frozen bait that i've had success on good success anyway i mean any bait can catch a fish at a random time but consistently to go out and have a chance at catching not only numbers of fish but quality fish i feel like skipjacks the only bait that i can do that frozen now as far as how i prep them this right here i wrap them in aluminum full and throw them in the freezer a lot of guys go to the trouble and expense of vacuum sealing them and that that's better that's a better way to store the baits and it'll keep them long-term my skipjack i mean i got about a three-month turnaround on them i don't keep them in the freezer that long before they get used typically so i don't go to all that extra trouble and i've done this for years again just wrap them alone full toss them in the freezer works fine i've caught a lot of big fish on frozen skipjack through the years both blues and flatheads and so i'm not going to change my ways or go to the extra time and expense to vacuum seal them but uh anyway let me i'm i'm keep rambling on here y'all i got to get some baits down here in the water so i can get some more fish and ensure that we get a video out of today's trip i'd say just you know tell me to shut up but i don't really need to tell you to do that because a lot of it's already doing the comment box all right there's our next chunk of bait going down drop it straight down let my sinker hit bottom it's on the carolina rig all right hits bottom so i'm just going to reel my rod tip down maybe a foot or so under the surface since i don't have any current out here this morning raise it up set it to rod holder we're fishing again this bluegill up here just got lively oh there he goes man it's oh okay he's still on there he got lively and something hit him i thought he'd let it go but he's eating that's fish number three oh it's the small one right here just a small blue cat small blue kitty they found him a mill in that old bluegill though blue cat eating bluegill yeah about small enough to be used for bait blue cat go down there and get big for me i'll battle you again someday well that's another live bluegill going let's stick another one on there that's actually a believer green sunfish i believe they're called they all bluegill to me we're gonna drop him down he's real small he may not tolerate that hook very well it's a 10 odd size circle hook so for a bait that small that's a pretty thick wire gauge so he'll uh he'll squirm around there for a little while anyway if he dies off and we'll put another one on oh there goes the head piece there it goes i got more fish coming through i'd had a little break there before that little dink blue ate the bluegill that's like a tongue twister saying a little blue eating the bluegill but now here we are a couple minutes after i let that one go and i'm got something on his head here that's another small one though that's a big bait for him but he had a big appetite i guess let me get hold of him here well we back to two to two two on the cut bait two on the live bait this one here at least gave us the head piece back i'll send it back down here in just a second it ain't it's in good condition because it ain't been messed with down there well there's the kitty see you buddy are you out of here you got that line all wrapped around the hook didn't he yeah that bait there y'all is still in good shape i'm just going to re-hook it here through the other nostril there and send it right back down try to get another one on it down it goes gosh look at that look at that man oh you let it go oh my gosh that was a huge takedown and he let it go before i could oh my gosh wow that was a huge takedown and did not hook up for whatever reason dang man i hope he comes back for it y'all i just reeled in my bluegill here on my back rod just to check him because he had been down there all morning here and you can see he's a smaller bluegill that's a larger gauge hook if i you know i ideally i should have put a smaller hook on for a bait this size but uh you know i'm too lazy to be re-tying rigs out here but i'm one of those because he's in such bad shape just cut some slits in him down there and we'll use him as a whole bait that's kind of like a cut bait with the slits in him he'll be uh you know submit some scent out and uh you know bleeding a little bit and so we'll still have our live one on up there and then have this down there beside him look at that head piece oh man look at that take down look oh my gosh it didn't hook up again oh that's bad luck oh he's back for it he's back for it he's going with it now watch that rod look at it shoot off oh he hooked up then oh man look at him spin the kayak around buddy i hope he didn't get over another line but i don't really care he took that rod down hard and just did not hook up and then came back for it yeah that's another fun-sizer there's no way he's done fighting either he's about to shoot off again and make a big ruckus there he goes i know he had some more fight in him there go ahead and get down to your system buddy i ain't bringing you in until you're done oh then rod take downs man you know again i'm sitting here 28 feet of water so my i've got about 26 foot of line out and so when these fish hit it there's just so much more of an intense takedown even fish this size right here can really get a rod tip going down hard and fast yeah go ahead but i know you wasn't done i knew you wasn't you fought hard then you play possum with me i ain't bringing you in until you get all that energy out all right y'all there's another one on the cut bait old fun-sized blue right there and he was certainly fun i switched out that head a little while ago put on a fresh headpiece i reeled that line in i was going to replace it so there wasn't no bait on the hook so catfishing 101 you need some bait on your hooks to catch them i got them switched out i cut some slits in this bluegill over here because he was dead and then we got that little green sunfish up there but got us another fun size blue i'm gonna send him home and wait on the next thing to come along get out of here buddy land them rods getting taken down awesome gets me so excited every time it never gets old headpiece got hit again look at it swimming left right there buddy i'm gonna let him take it my god if that's the direction he wants to go he's spinning whole kayak around oh he's got it in mud he knows he's hooked now oh yeah it's on the same head piece i just dropped back down after the last one oh it's a good time let's see what this one looks like that's another one there that's i'd call him a larger size bank he he had a big appetite that's a that's a bigger head piece on there but he said he wanted it so he'd take a bite out of it and he got the wrong end of that hook didn't he listen just barely hooked there in a whisker patch and there he goes i know he is going to rip free as i was trying to get him bait's still in good shape i like them if you're going to be a small fish at least come off the hook easy right and get the old quick release all right that bait's already back down there and we're ready for the next one to come hopefully it won't be long it's kind of kind of seems like a bite's picking up here the later the morning goes on i thought it'd be more of a sunrise type deal out here today but just not the case i just we should warm up just a little bit i was hoping the sun would come out and heat things up we got this breeze blowing and it's not bad but way into may now i'd like to have some warmer temperatures out here not being these dang sweatshirts and still cold but uh anyway enough of me gabbin i'm gonna wait on the next fish and y'all know when it happens this back rod got hit yep he's on there he's on there that's really man that's on that skipjack midsection again let's see what this one is i've had another little break here probably 30 minutes or so look he's well he's lassoed himself around the tail he can't even try to swim off [Laughter] he's ate the bait and then got this line wrapped around him so dang tight look at that guide him by the tail buddy all right blue cat let's see what we can do with you here lordy days they just flung the bait off the hook and out in the water just fine i was getting ready to leave here shortly anyway i actually probably call this the last fish of the video so i'm gonna get out of here and go get me some lunch goodness man the hook was in there tight well there he is a little blue kitty get out of here buddy all right guys i am packed up and headed toward the car i'm gonna go get me about to eat uh this morning's trip i had some down time in between fish i mean there was some long breaks but overall it was productive i got that nice blue got the flathead a few other bites so you know what i'll take it there's been a lot of trips so i've certainly done worse but spots like that when you're setting up in creek mouse anywhere up and down here on the tennessee river or really any river throughout the country where you've got some depth and fish are going to be working in and out to feed it's just a matter of putting the time in if you can put enough time into a spa as fish periodically move in and out of that creek throughout the day and night if your baits are sitting there and just an easy meal for them you're gonna get some bites and you're gonna catch some fish and so fortunately i was able to get a few out here this morning but i'm gonna pack up and leave here i'm gonna go get me some lunch and i think i'm going to head back out this afternoon and do some ultralight fishing because i'm just in the mood for it so i'm going to get my ultra light gear and head back out somewhere and may take the cameras with me and film that too we'll see but anyway guys i hope you enjoyed the action today i'll see you again soon thanks for watching [Music] well
