[Music] hey y'all justin with kayak catfish i'm out here on the water today not in the kayak though i'm out in the boat i met my buddy mark cooper top knocks fishing youtube channel he's got an awesome channel he's putting out some great content and what we're going to be doing today is striper fishing with live bait we're going to catch some live skip jack right here to steam plant and mark tell us what we're going to be doing here today basically we're going to put them in 100 gallon tank and then we're going to float on balloons we're going to pull them around this hot water discharge on this main river channel right now it's 44 degrees 45 because it's a winter and inside this hot water discharge it's upper 60s close to 70. so it's a huge place for fish to congregate and hopefully we catch a big giant striper awesome it sounds like a good time to me this guy right here he catches some monster striped bass he's one of the top striper fishermen here in east tennessee and like he's saying here we're at a steam plant we've got some warmer water coming out and it draws these fish up in here and this is one of the few steam plants around here that the water still gets warm although this one is going away here shortly but nevertheless we're gonna get over here we're gonna catch some skip jack put them in this giant tank he has and we're gonna have some fun today stay tuned oh right here y'all i just realized my camera wasn't running and i've got a double on right here all right got that camera going in the nick of time mine are small mark here what size are we going to be keeping today just anything we get or i hope i can get hold of them but we want them a little bit bigger than this these smaller ones die really easily in the tank we want them i like starting out at the eight inch ones and up up to 20 inches so we're going to throw that in right there back y'all not my other one down here he's in the floor he popped off let's get him out here too let's see if we can find some bigger that's encouraging though he's throwing off one side of the boat and i'm throwing off the other and our first cast we both hooked up yeah look right here just like that folks there's him another one you want to try to not touch them as much as you can when you're doing this and keep them alive does it take the slime off or their skills or really baby fish they like to die so the least you touch them the better if i'm trying to keep them overnight i'll use a de-hooker and not even touch them if they fall in the boat i just throw them back in the water because they'll die if you try to keep them overnight like that well they are really finicky fish folks this is one of them things that i can't do in the kayak because i cannot keep them alive this one there he is all right y'all hooked up again we have there's another one's trying to get there he is he hate it right there i don't know if they got on camera or not that was awesome lost one in the boat let's see if we can get this on him before i lose i was reeling this top one in and the other one come up and got it mark's hooked up right here too he's doubled up there it is folks these fish are in here we've only been here just a few minutes now a few casts and we're getting them what do you think too small throw them in there should we get bigger ones yeah we're having getting a lot of bites here y'all but right now just been this size but we're gonna keep casting here let me show you my baits here too because i'll get asked undoubtedly what i'm using here y'all is some crappie magnets that's 1 8 ounce crappie magnet jig heads with a little white and chartreuse tail a crappie magnet on there got two of them tied on and a series this is just a academy clearance rack rod here don't need anything fancy or expensive for skip jack fishing you just need something a little backbone in case you get two or three big fish on at the same time that's just a 2500 series dial reel with some 20 pound braid on there and a 15 pound fluorocarbon leader mark what kind of setup are you using there as you reel in some more fish i have i think you have about had three on right there didn't you i have just a cherry wood stick from walmart some budget reel i found in the budget bin there and 10 pounds suffix 832 braid cheap i like it that's how we roll on this channel y'all what kind of bait you're using a different type of a bait here is that a i've got a sabiki rig i basically tied myself it's three crappie hair jigs tied in a row and then uh a one eighth ounce jig head at the bottom with the curly tail and then two split shots so i can cast it further okay but yeah that's all there is to it simple and easy folks you don't have to be expensive when you're doing this style fishing right here it don't take much to catch skipjack yeah i'm gonna switch over here to the side that mark's casting on he's getting more bites here comes another one in him that's a little better one right there yeah they're everywhere right there that's beside the current hit look at them they're all over mine yeah they are i'm hooked up too like eight of them man they were all coming up right there they're coming up trying to rip the bait out of each other's mouths oh bear went one better ones we'll throw the smaller ones out here a little bit as we get bigger ones all right throw him in the tank mark was saying folks the way this current loops around here comes on this outside bend here in this little channel and they skip jack they're all they'll seem to be over here they've been all over here in this channel that we've come up through here but they really seem to be stacked right here in this heavier current that's coming out they're all over right there y'all there one finally hooked up i could just see them swarming right there on it [Music] we'll use him oh mark's hooked up too look at him dancing back here folks who says white guys can't dance this one can there we go he's going in the tank i'm going to try to feed him to the striper later all right folks we've caught several skip jack now so mark's getting baited up here we're going to see if we can hook into a striper here in the same area that we caught the skipjack so he's just got him one here out of the bait tank that's one of the bigger size ones we caught there hopefully they ain't a big glare on the camera so mark you you taking it what size hook is that right there you get nine on octopus j hook gamakatsu and then i got 50 pound fluoro going to 65 pound braid and you hook them right in front of the dorsal fin okay you just kind of skin hook it there how deep you're going on you can't hook it you don't want to hit it in their back or they'll die okay and then we're going to use a balloon as a float because they're too big to use normal floats so we'll let out some line we're gonna probably let out 15 feet below them just because that's about what depth we're at here you want to give them a little room to swim and you call that their leash that's the leash okay how long you're basically walking a dog if the dog gets eaten by a big fish i like it you want to blow your balloon up about that size sometimes you got to go a little bigger if the skipjack is bigger or they'll just take the balloon under is that just a regular bloom like walmart there walmart special okay keep it easy folks cheap and easy that's how we do it on here all right so he's got his line out there he's got his balloon on now how far distance you're gonna let out this skip jack here behind the boat it just depends so we're going to the way we're going to do this one now is we're going to hold it in our hand because it's such tight quarters in here and we'll probably let it out 20 30 yards in the water if a striper starts chasing we'll see it we'll let it swim and then once it gets eaten we'll reel down set the hook and then the fight's on okay this one will be justin's rod all right i use a muskie right here i've had this thing for forever it's missing two eyelets up there you know whatever hey it'll catch a fish yep you'll catch a fish you don't need expensive name brand tackle to do it folks yeah folks the plan is spend a little time here try to catch some stripers if we don't get on them here we're gonna load up and go hit a different section of the river this afternoon but with all this bait in here and this warmer water coming out of the discharge there's a pretty good chance that we could find some stripers here so let's see what we can find when you're floating these baits out when a striper really you can do this bass fishing too really anything but when they eat it you want to give them about the count to three mississippi when the balloon goes down or it'll start shooting across the top of the water because that means they ate it and they're swimming sideways but you'll notice it you'll feel it when they eat it but let it go down in the water for about three seconds and then reel until there's full tension while you're pointing at it and then set as hard as you can and then let go and just let it take drag because it's just going to make one big giant run but that's generally how i do it some people use circle hooks on them which same principle except you just reel really quickly when you're trying to set the hook as fast as you can until it gets tight and then reel a couple more times it'll roll in the corner of their mouth um you get a better hookup percentage doing this though with the j hooks i feel like so that's what i use okay mark what's the biggest striper you've ever caught doing this um i've caught a couple right at 50 pounds 50 pounds that's a monster yep and we're in a place where we could beat that today okay all right he's setting the bar high folks i like it i like his style up take it take it take it all the others get it there he is yeah folks we we've made two laps around here looking for a striper didn't get any action so what we're going to do is and get this thing unhooked here up we're going to uh load up on some more skip jack and we're going to move down the river i'm going to let this thing go back because i've got hooked him so i'm going to throw him back he's gonna live anyway yeah folks that's gonna be the plan we just gonna get some more bait here make sure we're loaded up and we heading down river hit another spot you think he's been all right put it down i'd hold it in your hand yeah he's on there oh i think you come off no they come off dang crap let's see if the that was that was a stripe they going he got the bite got excited folks we got excited he was on it though yeah we sure was i think he's got it there he goes he's on that time oh got him yeah buddy i gotta get that clicker turned off because my audience is gonna go crazy with that but we hooked up here y'all we're here right before sunset and we have been trolling a full spread of live baits we got planer boards out we got some balloon baits out and we just working this main channel down through here and we missed a couple bites earlier coming at you well right here at sunset here we're hoping we was hoping it would pick up and we got us one on here this one made one of the balloon baits but we got them live skip jack on every rod hopefully you all can see this i know it is low light but we're here at the witching hour following us around a little bit yeah he's appalling let's see if i can go around this keep him out of these other lines here i think i may have got in that planer board rod oh there he is okay mark here top knocks fishing's about to about to get him netted he's coming up over here buddy i still got him in that line nice there we go we'll take that that's a fat one that's a good fish right there y'all oh yeah yeah that was a good one look at that man i hope you all can see that that's a good fish heck yeah nice my man mark cooper top knocks fishing he knows the stuff folks big stripe bass catfish musky he catches all the big fish around here yeah buddy i'll tell you what mark let me come up here yeah let me get behind you and we'll be able to get a better look at it in the light there you go there he is folks it's in the light there nice that's a fat pre-spawn fish right there yeah he is he got some weight to him this is justin's fish he set the hook and everything on him but i guess he's being the king well they say it's bad luck to hold another man's fish ain't it so well i just got you seven years of bad luck there you go guys there it is big stripe bass we switched out so i could get some pictures with it he got it yeah buddy yeah boy i caught it because that guy right there holding the camera man he knows the stuff we put me on the bait out here we moved down river and we just been pulling along this main channel ledge and right here at sunset we got on one here there we go that's a good good fat one all right we're gonna let it go and it'll be here waiting on us next time that is a thick fish the back of it's thick too yeah look at that that look at the belly on that thing i hope y'all can see him we're out here it's winter time it's february water's cold one thing you'll know when they're doing good you see how his fins are sticking up that's a good sign okay he's energetic then i bet if he pushed him off he would just kick right off yep there he goes there he goes yeah awesome man yeah top knocks fishing youtube check him out it catches them all the time all right guys we are back at the launch getting loaded up as
