my name is Neil newborn human and I'm an actor and also director and a producer in video games can you tell us a story of how you go into the voice acting industry yeah I was broke super broke I was I had no money I was doing a lot of independent film I was in heavily in debt doing a lot of catering with a great company called seller Society who are lovely and very and thank God for them because they supported me um you know through giving me part-time work that was really well that was really good but I was broke man I was I had nothing and um I got to a point in my career where I was not doing the roles that I wanted to do cuz I couldn't take my face off so uh I found motion capture by mistake and through motion capture audio motion who Champion me Imaginarium cers speak people um creative assembly they I found Voice work through that and I was lucky enough to get an agent lip service who amazing my agents for the last like what seven eight years maybe longer I think and they've really championed me and in Buck world in America my agents over there and they're incredible the animation Department they're amazing so I'm very fortunate to be with them and through the two of them as well as other people champing me in the industry and also because moap and peap starts merging with voiceover there's a complete crossover now so I was very fortunate to come from both worlds which is great that's kind of how I got into it very lucky can you tell us the story of how you got into the iconic role in Resident Evil which one uh just any of like what would you consider your most iconic R I think Heisenberg was but then Nemesis is a pretty is pretty iconic so I guess Heisenberg is probably one of the best roles I've done in re but Nemesis is one of the most iconic roles I guess cuz it's just you know even the silhouette is like that's Nemesis you know so um Nemesis was really fun that was just silly that was just silly me being a creature stomping around smashing things and blowing things up jumping through car window so I did all the stunts for apart from this one wire thing which they wouldn't let me do but anyway uh but I I was jumping through car windows like literally double fisting smashing through a car window to grab the Japanese stump performer who's pretended be Jill slamming them around then getting thrown out and rolling back and slamming on the it was great stuff it was really fun um so that uh that was definitely interesting to play that but I think yeah I guess he's the iconic one whereas Heisenberg is probably one of my favorites I like Nikolai as well because I think my take on him was way more fun than the original version which was kind of cboard cutout Russian dude and wasn't very interesting I like my my Eastern European version of Nikolai was a lot of fun to play do you have a favorite fan interaction I don't really see I don't I don't I don't like the term fans like with me I mean I like I love the audience and it's great to be appreciated by people for my work um the idea of fan is I get uncomfortable with because it just feels like cuz fan is the shortening of fanatic you know and uh well think if you think about it it's like where the word rot comes from I believe so somebody that I I get obsessed over like um comics and games and things like that I I obviously I Fanboy as well but I find uncomfortable for people to call themselves a fan of me in that way because I don't really feel like that's not deserving I don't really feel like you know I'm just an actor doing my job so I really appreciate when people tell me they like the work um I've had many many great interactions with the audience let's say um particularly a lot of trans men young trans men as well who've a couped my characters for some reason they really uh connected with and then became a creat a very comforting character for them that was really humbling and I feel very honored about um people that approach me from that Community because obviously I'm an ally I want to support and you know it's really nice to feel that some my work somehow is is connected with people in that way so yeah a lot of trans men some trans women as well which I really appreciate that they they dig my characters so yeah it's nice to be able to feel like even it's just entertainment it does something which is really cool very honored what's your favorite memory from your work there too many I have loads of them um each again each job is different um deliver Mars we created zero g which is really fun I got to work with actors and do workshops with that PL out the Apes last RTI I played an ape did I worked with the legendary Peter Elliott Steve kely and I have worked many times together uh as director and actor um and I I really love working with him he's also one of my good mates so it's like he's one of my close friends so it's an interesting experience to work with him like that he's my tarantina he's that guy um he's amazing and he just did R4 with Nicos leaders he's really really really brilliant director to work with BS Gate 3 has been incredible it's like four-year gig it's like doing a TV series with season after season and to evolve a character for four years has been incredible so I don't really have like one thing there's like loads of things from each different jobs that mean a lot to me who would the most surprisingly nice person You' work with Clancy Brown is terrifying and intimidating and such a nice guy so he's lovely he's such a I've only only met him for the one day that we crossed over on to draw it become human I was L likey and he was just such a nice guy he was so cool and he had he had a lot of work to do he's a lot of strain for all the cast I think especially the main cast of that game I was just sort of coming in and out every few months to do my thing and come out again but Clancy was great I really was like wow dude he's so cool what role were you most excited about getting to do all of them all of them really um every role that I get given every job I get I'm excited about because uh I'm offer it and it's a chance to create something new and different so um there's never been one particular job that has been oh my God that you know that one job Resident Evil of course is amazing bals Gate 3 is amazing to be working on that all of them mean a lot to me so I don't take it for granted that I'm going to get work I'm not I don't feel entitled um you know life isn't fair but you can work hard and you still may not get what you want but at least you have a fair shot so but I don't expect anything I work hard for what I get and um so yeah I get excited because somebody offered me a job a role to perform you know what's your dream role and why I don't know done my dream roles really I'm doing very well so my dream roles tend to be things that get G offered to me that are bit wild a bit fun a bit unusual a bit off center and also things that will challenge me as an actor um so even like the deliver Mars game which I just did which I was performance director as well as supporting Leen I had to play this character that actually is not he's trying to be a nice guy but he's actually not a very nice guy but he's not a villain as such he does villainous things but he's not actually a villain he's a bad father so it's interesting that was a very challenging role it was very real and very um embedded in realism and uh that was challenging CU it was so famili like me being a dad him being a dad was very close so it was an interesting experience yeah although I'm not likeing just hope how did you prepare for your most challenging role oh yeah sure and what did you learn from it yeah so sorry about that it's been a long weekend um so yeah I used these different um acting methodology craft tools to create a full character to explore the life explore the background life understand the story The thematics the tonality of the story um and really create a three-dimensional living character um I do method acting uh in the right way not in the kind of nonsense Hollywood way that people keep talking about it's not the same thing um and I use lots of different tools to really imbue this character and and to create it uh from the scripts from the the scripts and also the director's Vision Etc so that's what I tend to prepare for character lots of different tools working it lots of different ways trying different ideas different voices different accents um playlists I make playlist for every character for different scenes or different moments which is really cool things like that if you had to restart start your voice acting career today will be the first point to call and why what do you mean will be the first thing you do first thing I do to restart it sigh that I have all this great work I have to somehow get the audition to do it again I can't remember how to get the audition for the various jobs that would really really not cool um I don't know if I had to restart my I had to restart my uh voice training you mean with no skills like let's say um you went back to the day before you decided to start doing voice acting do this what would you do differently nothing I've been really lucky I wouldn't do anything differently I've been very very lucky with Voice work and my career I wouldn't change anything I think the way that I've evolved as an actor the work I've done is because of the mistakes I may have made early on um so I wouldn't change anything if you could go back to the start of your career and give yourself one piece of advice what would that be I don't care about being good just do your work uh good comes by doing your work you're already good enough to be in the room if you get an audition that kind of stuff now at the end of the interview have you got anything you'd like to talk about uh yeah um the next uh big project that I've been involved in for about four years now is bals Gate 3 that's coming out it's full release on the 31st of August 2023 it's going to be absolutely amazing I'm very lucky to play staring one of the main companions in it and I urge people to buy it it's going to be absolutely extraordinary
