my sorrow into [Music] you give me praises ashes [Music] [Applause] [Music] to see love wash away love came and rescued me you turned my morning into dancing you turned my sorrow into beautiful ashes beautiful ashes [Music] [Applause] [Music] you give me beautiful ashes beautiful ashes [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the lord be with you so welcome everyone to this evening or for this liturgy we don't have a penitential right because the distribution of the ashes count as the penitential right so let us pray grant o lord that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take up battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever a reading from the book of the prophet joel even now says the lord return to me with all your heart with fasting with weeping and with mourning rend your hearts and not your clothing return to the lord your god for he is gracious and merciful slow to anger and abounding instead fast love and relents from punishing who knows whether the lord will not turn and relent and leave a blessing behind him a grain offering and a drink offering to to be presented to lord your god [Applause] blow the trumpet in zion sanctify a fast call a solemn assembly gather the people sanctify the congregation assemble the aged gather the children even infants at the breast let the bridegroom leave his room and the bride her canopy between the vestibule and the altar let the priests the ministers of the lord weep let them say spare your people o lord and do not make your heritage a mockery a byword among the nations why should it be said among the peoples where is their god then the lord became jealous for his land and had pity on his people the word of the lord [Music] have mercy have mercy o lord [Applause] [Music] have mercy on me o god according to your steadfast love according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgression wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sins [Applause] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] for i know my transgressions and my sin is ever before me against you you alone have i said and done what is evil in your sight have mercy [Music] created me a clean heart oh god and put a new and right spirit within me do not cast me away from your presence and do not take your holy spirit from me have mercy [Music] restored to me the joy of your salvation and sustaining me a willing spirit [Music] oh lord open my lips and my mouth will declare your praises [Music] have mercy o lord for we have sinned a reading from the second letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters we are ambassadors for christ since god is making his appeal through us we entreat you on behalf of christ be reconciled to god for our sake god made christ to be sin who knew no sin so that in christ we might become the righteousness of god as we work together with him we urge you also not to accept the grace of god in vain for the lord says at an acceptable time i have listened to you and on a day of salvation i have helped you see now is the acceptable time [Music] see now is the day of salvation the word of the lord peace to you you are the king the king of glory praise to you you are the king the king of glory today do not your hear but listen to the voice of the lord [Applause] you are the king the king of glory [Applause] to you [Music] jesus [Music] [Applause] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew jesus said to the disciples beware of practicing your piety before people in order to be seen by them for then you have no reward from your father in heaven so whenever you give alms do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets so that they may be praised by others truly i tell you they have received their reward but when you give alms do not know do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing so that your arms may be done in secret and your father who sees in secret will reward you and whenever you pray do not be like the hypocrites for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners so that they may be seen by others truly i tell you they have received their reward but whenever you pray go into your room and shut the door and pray to your father who is in secret and your father who sees in secret will reward you and whenever you fast do not look dismal like the hypocrites for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are a fast that they are fasting truly i tell you they have received their reward but when you fast put oil on your head and wash your face so that your fasting may be seen not by others but by your father who is in secret and your father who sees in secret will reward you the gospel of the lord a while ago i was reading about a mystic i forget who she was i remember was a lady i don't want to guess because i'll probably get it wrong but anyways the lord would ask her to do these fasts you know sometimes 12 days sometimes 30 days sometimes 40 days and they were pretty pretty radical fasts and what would happen is when the lord would call her to a fast she would kind of lose her desire to eat now she was still hungry she still would have liked to eat but she said it was it was kind of i don't know effortless would be the right word but there was a grace she could go those days without food or according to whatever fast she was called to and as soon as the fast time would be over she had to eat the grace was gone and it's a basic principle in the spiritual life the lord jesus says in john 15 5 he says without me you can do nothing you see in the spiritual life we're supposed to not rely on our own strength but rely on the strength of god kind of like if you're trying to cross the ocean in a boat don't try to ore across the ocean don't try to paddle across the ocean you need to open up the sails and let the power of the wind the power of the spirit carry you across effortlessly not quite effortlessly but you know what i mean anyways the lord says without me you can do nothing now king david king david knew this we just heard the psalm psalm 51 is the psalm he he prayed after his fall with bathsheba and it's very interesting he's repenting before the lord and when you read the psalm he's basically giving the lord a to-do list have you ever noticed that if we just go through some of the the verses we had we have in our liturgy today so he he fell he fell seriously and he starts telling the lord lord you blot out my transgress and transgressions wash me thoroughly cleanse me create in me a new heart put a new in my spirit within me restore the to me the joy of your salvation sustain in me a willing spirit open my lips you see he knew he needs god's help and in this we see that king david had a profound wisdom and with that a profound knowledge of god and with that a profound humility he knew he was powerless and a very real child like faith because children understand this when they get in a mess they need their mama to clean them up to help them out they go running to their parent crying asking for help they got in a mess and only their parent can kind of straighten them out and so too in the spiritual life we need the help and the power of god we can't do it on our own and so lent it's not about us showing how much you know self-will we have or whatever no it's about ourselves yielding and surrendering to the lord admitting that we're powerless but also discerning like lord what change sacrifice are you giving me the grace to make during lent where is the power where's the power we might have a nice plan eating less sweets maybe losing a little bit of weight or whatever great is that what god is calling you to and giving you the grace to do and so it's so important for us you know to really go to the lord and ask him first of all admit our powerlessness and ask him lord show me show me what you're calling me to do and again ideally to go through the whole lenten season just being docile to the holy spirit just letting the spirit work his wonderful grace just letting go and letting god being a child before god and seeing how powerfully he will carry us if we allow him to be the wind in our sails we will have the distribution of ashes immediately after the final blessing the penance of lent has begun the sign of the blessed ashes invites us to respond to the god who calls us to come back to him with all our heart let us bring before the father our desire for renewal that as we enter this season of lent we as a church may join christ in his act of sacrifice we pray to the lord that we may discipline ourselves by fasting and self-denial we pray to the lord that we may not close our eyes to the needs of the poor by practical almsgiving and concrete generosity we pray to the lord that we may seek the sacrament of penance especially in this season of grace and renewal we pray to the lord that we may show special care for the sick and those abandoned by society we pray to the lord we pray for the intention of the mass for the repose of the soul of larry share we pray to the lord god of mercy and compassion look upon the petitions of penitent people may the ashes we receive today truly symbolize our commitment to do your will may our self-denial express our desire to die to self that we may live your divine life in us more fully we ask this through christ our lord [Music] prepare the way prepare the way prepare the way of the lord [Music] prepare the way [Music] jesus jesus jesus jesus [Applause] jesus jesus [Music] jesus [Music] prepare the way [Music] prepare the way of [Music] pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father as we solemnly offer the annual sacrifice for the beginning of lent we entreat you o lord that through works of penance and charity we may turn away from harmful pleasures and cleansed from our sins may become worthy to celebrate devoutly the passion of your son who lives and reigns forever and ever the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for you will that our self-denial should give you thanks humble our sinful pride contribute to the feeding of the poor and so help us imitate you in your kindness and so we glorify you with countless angels as with one voice of praise we acclaimed [Music] benedict [Music] see you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] the mystery of faith [Music] [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and marcel our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever the peace of the lord be with you always on [Music] on [Music] on your side is [Music] foreign behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those who are called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed foreign my jesus i believe that you are present in the most holy sacrament i love you above all things and i desire to receive you into my soul since i cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally come at least spiritually into my heart i embrace you as if you're already there and unite myself holy to you never permit me to be separated from you amen why don't we try coming down the center aisle just like we did in the good old days [Music] so [Music] a stream the emblem of salvation [Music] while he is [Music] yet as his life was taken so i wasted [Music] [Applause] [Music] his is my heart is [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] is [Music] i have no pride in gold [Music] but i will post in jesus [Music] before the lord [Music] is [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Music] is [Music] so [Music] [Music] the more i see you [Music] the more i find you [Music] the more i find you [Music] the more i love you i wanna sit at your feet drink from the cup in your head leave back again [Music] this love is so deep it's more than i can stand i'm it's overwhelming [Music] [Music] so uh oh oh um um ah hey let us pray may the sacrament we have received sustain us o lord that our lenten fast may be pleasing to you and be for us a healing remedy through christ our lord so these ashes are already blessed they were blessed earlier today so after the final blessing we'll do the distribution of ashes you can come forward just
