deep within where he [Music] come and journey with the savior who has come we are all gods sons and daughters in the spirit we are one in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the lord be with you and with your spirit good morning good afternoon boys and girls parents and school communities of saint clair saint mark and all saints today on ash wednesday we come to you once again with this virtual liturgy because we cannot gather in the school gym or in any size outside of the classroom we are however welcoming you this evening at 7 00 pm to our parish church here where we do have lots of room for our families if they want to bring their children to actually receive the ashes at 7 00 pm because as of yesterday march the 1st the provincial government restrictions on capacity limitations in churches has ended today on ash wednesday we begin our journey through the 40 days of lent at the end of lent we celebrate the death and resurrection of jesus on easter sunday throughout our journey towards this momentous event today we will receive in a symbolic way ashes on our foreheads along with the words repent and believe in the gospel these ashes remind us that we are sinners and have at terms times turned away from god who loves us these ashes remind us that during lent we will try to do our best to turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel and so let us now bow our heads in prayer lord protect us in our struggle against evil as we begin the season of lent make this day holy by our self-denial we ask this through christ our lord amen i'm pleased to have with us today mrs resendez the principal of saint mark's school who will now proclaim the first reading and later on in our liturgy the prayers of the faithful a reading from the book of the prophet isaiah the lord says this i tell you what it really means to worship the lord remove the chains of prisoners who are chained unjustly free those who are abused share your food with everyone who is hungry share your home with the poor and homeless give clothes to all in need don't turn away from your own relatives then your light will shine like the dawning sun and you will quickly be healed your honesty will protect you as you advance and the glory of the lord will defend you from behind then you will call for help and the lord will answer here i am don't oppress others or falsely accuse them or say cruel things the word of the lord thanks be to [Music] the god is my light and my salvation the lord is my light and my salvation whom shall i fear the lord is the stronghold of my life whom should i my dread and my salvation [Music] there is one thing i ask of the lord only this do i see to live in the house of the lord all the days of my life [Music] to gaze on the beauty of the lord to inquire at his temple [Music] the lord is my light and my salvation i believe i shall see the lord's goodness in the land of the living wait for the lord be strong be stout hearted and wait for the lord the lord is my light and my salvation [Music] praise to you lord [Music] king of jesus glory savior of the world savior of the world turn to the lord with all your heart for the time of salvation is here praise to you lord jesus king of endless glory savior of the world savior of the with your world lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew lord to you jesus said to his disciples when you do good deeds don't try to show off if you do you won't get a reward from your father in heaven when you give to the poor don't blow a loud horn that's what show-offs do in the meeting places and on the street corners because they are always looking for praise i promise you that they already have their reward when you give to the poor don't let anyone know about it then your gift will be given in secret your father knows what is done in secret and he will reward you when you pray don't be like those who love to stand up and pray in the meeting places and on the street corners they do this just to look good i promise you that they already have their reward when you pray go into your room and close the door pray to your father in private he knows what is done in private and he will reward you when you go without eating don't try to look gloomy as though show-offs do when they go without eating i promise you that they already have their reward instead comb your hair and wash your face then others won't know that you are going without eating but your father who sees in secret what is done in private will reward you the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ the lord is my light and my salvation boys and girls families and staff the lord has been our light and our salvation from the moment of our baptism many of you were baptized here at saint ignatius loyola church just off the screen at the baptismal font from then on you are called children of god and enjoy the light of christ but sometimes we don't always live as children of the light we sometimes live in darkness when we choose to do bad things our grade twos have learned about this this past fall in the sacrament of reconciliation as all of the upper year children know as well that the lord loves us and always forgives us during lent at the beginning of lent we recognize that we are all sinners when we hear those words repent and believe in the gospel with the ashes on our foreheads we enter into a time of desert as this display i don't know how much you can see of it but it has sand and it has palms it has water jugs because we long for not only the light of christ but we long to be thirst our thirst quenched by the love of christ by the water of christ in baptism as i said during these forty days we are called to do good deeds giving to the poor praying and going without eating our special foods why not so we can show off and advertise so that we can make more room in our hearts for the light of christ to dwell within us and so today i encourage you to think of one way that you're going to allow the light of christ to live in your heart this lenten season by doing good deeds during lent by perhaps giving to the poor by praying some more and coming back now to church now that we're open fully once again or to give something up for lent so that you can make a donation then to the poor the lord is our light and our salvation he wants us to be burning and shining brightly before all others let this lenten season be a time when we renew our promise to bring the light of christ to our classrooms to our families into the wider world especially in this time of great suffering and challenge in our world as we pray for the people of ukraine today our holy father pope francis asked us to be a special day of prayer for the ukraine and so i know that you join your prayers with mine for those people in their time of challenge may the lord always be our light and our salvation dear friends in christ now we have these ashes which you cannot see very clearly on your screen and we're going to bless them which we will use as the mark of our repentance now i'm going to ask mr mrs resendez and mr joseph our musician to come forward now to receive these ashes after we bless them lord bless the sinner who asks for your forgiveness and bless all those who receive these ashes may they keep this lenten season in preparation for the joy of easter and i now bless these ashes in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit repent and believe in the gospel repent and believe in the gospel my brothers and sisters we should pray at all times but especially today as we begin the season of lent let us ask our lord to hear our prayers and our response to each lord hear our prayer and i invite mrs resendez to come forward and lead us now for our pope our bishops our priests that they may help us to turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for people everywhere that we will work for peace and for the sharing of our food and clothes for those in need we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those who have turned away from jesus that they will know that jesus loves them and is always ready to forgive them we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for our families that they may help us listen to the words of jesus during this holy season through daily prayer and regular attendance at sunday mass we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for each of us here today that we may grow closer to jesus this lenten season by caring for one another in the classroom and at home we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we make an additional prayer as i mentioned during my homily for the people of the ukraine we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we gather our prayers and praise into one and boys and girls please pray aloud now together with your teacher in the classroom the words that jesus taught us our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil amen let us pray lord through this celebration may our lenten penance give you glory and bring us your protection we ask this through christ our lord amen boys and girls and school communities thank you for your attention today on this ash wednesday i have been in the schools visiting the grade twos and i will do so again and father john's will hopefully be back with me in the schools to celebrate confession for our great sevens in advance of their confirmation which is also upcoming and the lord be with you r may almighty god bless you on this holy day in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen let us go in peace to love and serve the lord thanks be to god into marvelous light i'm
