welcome back everyone this is Eric and chad here from all spawn and gun and today we're going to be doing a very special little video for you we're going to be talking about body armor alright philosophy of use strength we are going to be shooting some body armor today that was provided by our our 500 armor comm really great bunch of people but you know soldiers and in all kind of combat people for centuries have been wearing body armor to give them an edge in combat and to protect them from threats on the battlefield but in modern times body armor just isn't for soldiers it's commonly used by police that are you know serving like maybe a high-risk warrant you know civilians alike use body armor you might have a guy that is in a situation where maybe he's a bail bondsman or he's a repo guy and he wants that extra level of protection to give him an edge in a defensive scenario contrary to popular belief body armor is completely legal for any civilian to own as long as you're not a felon or as long as it doesn't you know have some sort of a bearing against laws in your local area or jurisdiction pretty much and like Eric said you know there's a lot of law enforcement military personnel out there that need body armor on a daily basis but in the civilian realm like Eric mentioned a few of the few of the professions bail bondsman one up but also the higher risk positions such as a normal truck driver sure you know they typically use body armor on a daily basis but just because you're a civilian in your in that kind of position doesn't mean that you know if you're not in a position like that you can't own body armor just to protect life and liberty some just on a daily basis or if you're in the kind of a high crime area you might want to set a body armor just to toss on real quick in the house if there's ever any kind of like a home invasion scenario something like that I mean and it's meant to protect you from you know a hit you know against your body if someone is shooting at you I mean you take a hit and then you you get to cover basically allows you to stay in the fight and return fire and protect yourself and your family or whatever the case may be but um like here I mentioned this is a r500 armor comm and one of the cool things about this it is a AR 500 steel which is what we shoot on a regular basis here on the range but what they do is they have this proprietary my necks coding this is by PAX Con I believe and it's a proprietary coding for AR 500 armor that line-x produces it's meant to adhere to the steel very very well and provide an anti spalling capability where the rounds impact the steel and the actual coating captures all the shrapnel that normally if one surround hits the steel it will actually just spread out and all the shrapnel goes pretty much 90 degrees away from the strike face this is meant to contain all that so you're not getting hit in the face or the chin or you know in the neck or anything like that or your arms if your arms are out like on a weapon it's meant to capture all that so it retains a very safe level of operation even after multiple hits so that's one of the benefits to it as well plus it's curved to better conform to your body as well as it has these shooters cuts is what it's called this armor is uh it's called a shooters cut plate and it's meant for basic place in the buttstock up against your shoulder for a rifle and you have clearance here where it's more comfortable instead of resting the buttstock on the actual armor itself which is pretty cool we're going to be putting all of these things to the test as we shoot some of the armor today this is such a nice carrier I hate to see it go but we are going to be destroying the carrier and the armor as we shoot it some today we've also got a ballistics-gel torso back here that's actually been provided by clear ballistics and they're a group of people that have been involved in the ballistics industry on the scientific end of things for quite some time now but they're trying to branch out into the firearms industry a little bit so it's going to be really interesting to see how well this whole rig holds up to everything that we're going to throw at it in the way of punishing rounds now a few other things you need to know about armor is that armor falls into a couple of rating categories you know basically the Roman numeral system goes from 1 all the way up to level 4 and on the on the ratings you have different projectiles that each rating is designed to stop now for instance level 3 on the new NIJ standard level 3 is designed to stop medium velocity of you know pistol projectiles that are jacketed with almost boring regularity level 4 armor will stop 308 threats pretty readily and you got to think I mean if you're in a situation where you're going to get out by somebody and you're going to get shot at with a 308 you're going to take anything you can get and surviving that 308 you know hitting you right in the chest I mean that's going to save your life and that's the most important thing about body armor body armor technology has come a very long way in recent years especially but I mean even as early as like back during the Vietnam War a lot of soldiers used to wear these flak vests and all the flak vest is this doesn't have any hard armor capabilities it won't even stop a knife hardly if somebody was charging at you with a knife it would penetrate right through this soft armor but this soft armor was designed to stop fragmentary secondary projectiles that are not supersonic so let's say that you're in a foxhole and a grenade lands 50 feet in front of you and it blows up and you get hit with a little bit of shrapnel shards and they're not moving very fast this will save your life well that's the same kind of thing that they wore back in the bombers back in World War two you know all the bomber crew pretty much wore a flak vest and you know you know you had shells coming up and blast in between you know the planes and whatnot in big formation and some of that shrapnel would come through the actual hole the plane yep you know and that would actually save people's lives in a number of cases if they were wearing that vest now here we have this is a armor that is indicative of what our troops in Iraq have worn in Afghanistan this is a modern set of armor in fact this is my armor I used in Iraq the carrier's not original but the plates inside of it are the plates are level 3a and it actually has a Kevlar carrier that will help kind of slow down pistol threats as well well those plates in there actually ceramic they are now there's a few different types of plates like these like we said or ar500 steel plates with the anti spalling coating the ceramic plates in there are designed to be very very lightweight a much more lightweight than the steel plates here but they're only meant to stop a few shots right for where they actually fail they'll actually break apart and then it'll allow multiple hits to come through where is the steel plating you can punch this all day long and I think that's what we're going to show in this video is just how much it can actually take absolutely you know ar500 is a very very high grade of steel that's very strong and I tell you what we're going to go ahead and get to the test we're going to shoot this armor a little bit were you hopefully this is going to be a very good learning experience for everyone we're going to step up the escalation of force we're going to start with some handgun threats and then of course our ballistics-gel dummy will show you you know it won't lie the ballistics gel dummy I'll show you everything that's going on because he won't be hit he'll survive every single shot as long as we hit the plate we're going to start off with handgun threats I'm going to step up to some rifle threats and let's see what kind of a result we get it's time to get started let's do it all right we're going to start out the testing today with a few handguns I'm going to test the steel out against nine-millimeter 357 and 44 Magnum and I'm going to be using the nine-millimeter first this is a Smith & Wesson M&P pro series 9 we're running some just NATO spec ball out of it just Full Metal Jacket let's see if we can do with a couple of shots on top of the plate alright and a couple of shots on top of the plate we're going to move up to 357 mag and see what kind of damage we can do with that we're going to take a couple of shots with the 357 Magnum this is a Smith & Wesson 686 Plus revolver see if we get a couple shots on the plate all right those look pretty good let's move up to 44 all right now we're going to take a couple of shots with the 629 here 44 Magnum get a couple shots on the plate all right we'll see what kind of damage was imparted to the place looks like all of our threats were stopped you can see we're quite a few of our rounds hit here and penetrated the carrier I'm just going to pull this plate out of here we're going to look at it now one thing I want to note here is that Chad did miss with the 357 Magnum once and we're going to show you on the torso where the 357 Magnum actually hang on let me pull this thing off now the 357 Magnum went right there and passed all the way through I mean literally didn't slow it down one bit now that was where he actually missed the plate itself but here we can see a couple of our threats and how the plate actually absorbed those threats right here is a nine-millimeter all right we have a 357 Magnum we have 244 magnums so you can see that the the anti sprawling capabilities of the plate did exactly what it was designed to do it didn't spread out and disperse those jackets on to the carrier and especially being in the carrier those jacket fragments would be contained within the coating on the plate but then also within the carrier too would kind of help contain some of those jacket fragments that's looking like it's a pretty easy test to show now we're going to step up to some rifle threats we're going to shoot it with some a Pitts thirty-aught-six from a garand which I'm looking forward to see we're going to shoot it with the SCAR heavy and we'll probably got a few other things we can hit it with let's see how it goes all right we saw that our pistol threats were absorbed by the armor without any kind of difficulty we're going to step up to some rifle threats we're going to shoot with some m2 armor-piercing ammunition which basically 3006 m1 garand black tip to spread apart now bear in mind that on armor ratings they're generally only designed to stop one round of the threat that they're actually intended to stop so what we want to do is we want to shoot two rounds and we're going to actually shoot this plate about six or eight times then we'll probably shoot it to failure see what it takes actually punch through that armor all right let's get started in one garand against our AR 500 armor plate oh that can't be pleasant all right well we've traded out for the scar heavy going to shoot some standard NATO spec ball ammunition two rounds on the target tell you what if I were wearing that body armor and I got hit with that garand I don't think I'd be sticking around but this is just to prove how strong this armor is let's try it all right I'm going to trade out for an ar-15 with some m855 ball ammunition actually it's a steel penetrator and we're going to try two more shots from that and we're going to have a look at our damage all right for our last two rifle threats we're going to shoot two rounds of m855 ammunition which is 62-grain projectile with a mild steel penetrator and we're going to be shooting out of a 16 inch barrel we'll see what it does against our armor here alright let's put our plates out those are some pretty nasty threats that we threw at this thing I'm curious to see how it turns out alright guys let's have a little look here okay you can see we got some little bit of jacket material that's kind of stuck in the carrier that's probably a good thing the carrier helped aid and the jacket fragments from hitting you know the intended target in the face see there's some more jacket fragments when you have these high-velocity rifle projectiles there's only going to be so much you're going to be able to do but look at that he survived so this armor did exactly what it was designed to do and it kept our man alive now let's look at the plate itself oh yeah look at that see where the armor captured all look at that that's a result that's exactly what we're looking at get this out of the way here okay so here we can see ooh those armor-piercing thirty-aught-six rounds look what they tried to get out the back but they did not of course but you can see where the anti sprawling material you know chipped off but you got to think I mean that's a armor-piercing thirty-aught-six round hitting both of these quadrants and then of course you see the 556 didn't really do a whole lot our 308 you know that that's certainly not pleasant but it did exactly what it was designed to do you can see the anti sprawling coating actually kept all of the Jacket fragments you can see several of the Jacket fragments here from those two monster 308 so we shot at it bear in mind that when you look at the the rating level on body armor it is designed to stop one round of the of the maximum intended threat that that plate is designed to stop so the fact that this stopped to 3006 is to 308 and to high-velocity five five six rounds I can say this armor definitely does exactly what it's designed to do now guys one thing that you want to probably think about to a lot of people always ask a lot of these armor manufacturers they're going okay well will it stop a 50 Cal will it stop a 338 Lapua will it stop a 408 cheytac round the likelihood of it stopping that or probably slim something that high-velocity something that powerful carrying that that you know just maximum amount of kinetic energy is likely not going to be stopped by a plate like this there are some threat levels out there that are designed to stop some of the higher velocity rifle rounds but they're not very common you know level three and level three a body armor is probably going to be the most common armor that the average civilian or law enforcement alike is going to encounter you know most policemen on the street are probably expecting handgun threats more so than rifle threats but it's nice to know that with this plate armor that you can survive a direct hit from a rifle realm it's only designed to stop at once but it's awesome to see the fact that it really does stop those rounds even when they're you know multiple hits on the plate now if I were to take something like that thirty-aught-six with those armor-piercing rounds which is of course a very powerful and high-velocity service rifle and I were to shoot one spot several times well then yes eventually those rounds are going to push on through and they're going to harm the person wearing the body armor but I guess the whole philosophy there is that this armor and any body armor is designed to give you the winning edge over your assailant and keep you in the fight if you get shot you react you move away you stay in the fight you survive you kill the person that's trying to kill you or in the case of say just normal civilian say that you're you buy a set of body armor for your wife at home and you tell her hey if somebody kicks in the door or if something happens you donned your body armor you get your gun and you hole up and you deal with the problem that can also be a contributing factor to why many civilians want body armor obviously they want to be able to protect their family now I can shoot the crap out of this plate until those rounds start to get through I mean any average person is going to be able to tell that if you shoot something enough times yes it is going to puncture through now we're not going to do that to our ballistics torso because I have something else planned for them for a future video however what we do is we can set this armor up and just shoot the plates a little bit and we'll just shoot the crap out of this and show you just how much it really will stop from various guns so I think we're going to do that right now all right we've reached the point of the video where we're going to shoot the crap out of one of these plates to see how much damage it can take I'm going to start off with some 45 ACP 230 grain same distance 50 feet this is going to be fun I'm really curious to see how much damage this thing can take the firearm we're using is the Kriss vector here we go I can't imagine that would have been too Pleasant let's go have a look at the plate alright you can see the 45 ACP just kind of lobbed right in there of course the plate absorbed every single round I didn't you know have any doubts there 45 is not a very high velocity cartridge so I didn't really expect us to run into any problems there you can see the anti spalling coating did its job we're going to continue and step up the force a little bit I think Chad's going to Pelt this thing with a little 556 ss109 see how that does alright well they are 500 armor plate captured all this 45 ACP projectiles we're going to kind of Pelt the top of the plate with some m855 ball out of this AR here and see how much you can capture I've got about 15 shots left I think so see if we can do here well I got a few shots off before the plate fell out of our little holder there all right let's see what kind of damage we got on the plate there from Chad shooting the m855 ball ammunition it's very hard to tell but the holes are very tiny they're up here at the top where he was aiming you can tell there's no stalling it didn't really push any of the material out of the way we did get a little bit of splitting start to occur up here at the top you can see where the jacket fragments were starting to push some of the coating off but considering how much we've shot this plate that's normal remember that these plates are only rated to stop one of those high-velocity rifle rounds so the fact that it'll do several again just as a testament to how strong this type of system really is you can see nothing came out of the back of the plate and I tell you what from a standpoint of armor you know I've got experience using armor I've used it in combat I've used it overseas and I can say that you have to be able to trust your life to your armor you know from a standpoint of philosophy of use armor we'll give you a second chance to survive it will give you a chance to stay in the fight however it will not make you smarter it won't keep you from putting yourself into dumb situations that will cause you to get shot so remember it's not meant to be a replacement for smart logic using the right tactic for every situation making sure you're making the right decisions for those around you and yourself of course and your family you know if you're a policeman using armor is a very effective thing to be able to keep you and your other guys alive when you're out on the street you're doing your thing you're doing your job every day same thing for soldiers you're kicking in doors every day you're out there you're beating the streets doing your job you want armor that's going to save your life of course you know tactics are always going to be your first line of defense against surviving a gunfight armor is just meant to give you that little bit of edge there to help you survive so we want to definitely thank AR 500 armor comm for sending us these samples to check out and to show you guys kind of our take on what armor is what it should be you know how it should protect you you can see that the armor is very effective I've got one more little thing planned we're going to blast it with something really big just to see what happens let's do that guys we appreciate you watching today and we'll leave you with this final bit of carnage against this plate all right guys I promise something crazy 325 green solid have a 500 Magnum we'll see if that would stop it if you're wearing this armor I can't imagine many handgun threats that are more powerful than this it's the most powerful production revolver in the world here we go oh yeah woohoo Nelly has smack the crap out of it all right well we saw that our plate stopped a 500 Magnum of course we know it's rated for much higher threats than that but it's still nice to know that if somebody shoots you with the most powerful handgun that you're going to survive thanks for watching our video catch us next time we probably have more body armor tests on the way hope to see you next time you
