that was screaming for help when i was paddling pop a locker and take me to charlestown job done how easy was that yates is going to the rescue [Music] it's jethro's first serious rescue since returning from injury when you're rescuing young kids time's on your side it might not make you you really don't know how long how long they got left in them to fight [Applause] [Music] [Music] jethro learns why the girls couldn't hear earlier warnings from lifeguards because they're deaf [Applause] they looked at each other in a weird way as if like to acknowledge what was going on and they work together as a team and yeah never seen anything like it the young girls are sisters on shore harrison looks for their parents if i could hear the screens 50 meters away on the beach surely the parents could hear the screams it's the grandmother she's dead the grandmother has been trying to signal the girls for the last 10 minutes she was on the water's edge helpless she couldn't let anyone know that her kids are in trouble she couldn't run up to us you know she just started doing sign language to me and i felt my heart sunk a bit actually [Music] we didn't know we was moving back and yeah me and someone i thought it's gonna be fun way back but we will drown because water especially with my face i told you about why you say help when you're out in the water you hear you know the seagulls are crashing off the waves they couldn't hear anything not being able to hear anything or knowing that the lifeguard's coming to get you that's it'll be your worst nightmare i learned from school about rip and i thought it might be ripped so i do follow what teachers taught us to help yeah jethro's first serious rescue since returning to full duties is a resounding success down here we see people from so many different walks of life and it definitely makes you reflect and and realise how good our job is down here at the beach thank you when you rescue two girls like that it feels really good to send them home you all right when i first heard i instantly felt like a shooting pain jethro's shoulder is dislocated serious ligament or tender damage could spell the end of his season pain out of 10 was 10 for sure once you look down and you see that you're like your shoulder's sticking out here and it's all mangled it definitely gets worse whistling up baby come on get the whistle lifeguards normally administer pain-killing gas to injured beach-goers today it's jethro that will get a taste of the green whistle no good good good good keep sucking keep sucking keep sucking the green whistle seems to affect everyone in such a diverse way and jeff rowe not being too big of a guy it affected him quite quickly pop the locker and take me to charlestown and crew prepare the doors for landing he might have been even flying your 747 at one stage speaking you would be the base gorgeous flight attendant too i should have been uploading keeps sucking up paramedics have been called until then lifeguards manage jethro's pain this is whistle number two after the second whistle i have no recollection of what i said i know i could have said anything i'm might throw on some gloves and do a bit of a sliver on up there a wrap in the skater bowl no i started in the manual there's a pretty big scene up here there's people everywhere so we're gonna come up and if it's not too vicious we'll try and catch it throw on a pair of gloves and do our dirty work you can't believe the cops are here dealing with it yeah it's a bit a bit different different saving a rat than a human it's most probably going to be harder when i get to the skateboard the coppers are doing nothing so i was kind of like it's a rat like i'll do it like who cares drop in jess why did i drop into the bowl with no shoes on that's just plain old jesse just doing things before he thinks i wasn't going to touch it no what's going on i just held the bucket behind it and just slid straight in job done how easy was that [Laughter] as soon as i looked at it it was just eye contact and it's just like bang let's go and i was kind of like whoa i didn't think rats were vicious [Laughter] [Applause] definitely i knew it wasn't my jacket as if i'd use my jacket to put on a rat [Music] on my face [Laughter] so funny she had it in a bucket and a jump and you hit it again i was like it's not even my jacket i'd just put it on so it's probably mine no name oh chris chapman the lifeguards operations manual is a very important book but i definitely don't think there's anything about catching rats out of a bowl at the skate park rat rescue i need a washing jacket chat not happy jam no no i hate rats at the north end of bondi another new tradition is gathering support [Music] it's the second year of blow up bondi who knows what it all means but it looks like fun with a strong aussie flavor [Music] yeah guys just to let you know there's a big group of um backpackers going out to the point to paddle in on their live loads just keep an eye on them because a couple of them are pissed but i've had a word to him time to be careful over there [Music] the aim is to head for sure at the moment they're making good progress towards new zealand well i've done a couple of board rescues but never have i rescued someone on a floating kangaroo the weather's closing in and things are going pear-shaped [Music] on the beach lifeguards are being entertained by a choir supposedly from a siberian tractor factory [Music] [Applause] [Music] meanwhile the blow up bondi flotilla is making even better progress in the wrong direction [Music] yates is going to the rescue [Music] fortunately everyone's made it to shore safely even the marsupials i stood on them oh yeah yeah all right you're a special one come through this seat's for you a sea urchin is a little sea creature with all these little sparks that come off it and they kind of hide in the rock crevices i couldn't believe how many sea urchins were in his foot that's the worst i've seen i went to jump off the jump rock and i came back and then my wife came and took me over and tried to stand up and i fell through a hole sea urchin spikes carry toxin and are extremely brittle like needles of fine porcelain they easily break usually once they've penetrated the skin what's your name buddy cameron cameron i'm harrison i'm your surgeon for today jesse and harrison start the delicate operation removing the spines one at a time these are real tricky because they're so small and poor cameron here once he steps and then um they just snap off it's just yeah tweeze is your only hope otherwise you might have to go to the medical center and trying it out the little worry i took it on mate he was like a little soldier he he didn't complain once about pain and now at one stage i was digging into his foot that was the biggest one right i feel so sorry doing that to cameron because he was in a lot of pain but we just had to get them out especially you know as quick as we can i'm pretty positive i've got all of them out thank you jesse and harrison have taken 45 minutes to remove all the spines from cameron's foot good work mate you're an absolute legend it's like nothing else you've ever felt before like miniature knives just going into your foot and then when they're pulling them out just like someone's just pushing them in even deeper local resident paul has come to the tower with an injury no lifeguard has ever seen before
