This is different to the first definition. You can give up in general. I give up. That means this
is too difficult I'm not going to do it anymore. I give up, I can't do it, I just cannot do
it. It's very very hard. But you can also give up something or give something up and
this means to stop doing something and often this thing that you are giving up is difficult to
stop doing. For example smoking. Smoking is bad, right? Smoking is very unhealthy but smoking
is also addictive and so it's difficult to stop smoking. It is difficult to give up smoking. So
if you give up smoking it means you stop smoking forever. You don't start again and you never
have another cigarette. Right guys hello? Yeah? Attention please! Uh I have an announcement
to make. Whatever. Yes. I have officially given up drinking. Finished. Forever.
Seriously? I think the time has come to make a change in my life. That's really good,

become more mature, you you really have grown as a person and I think this next step in your
life will really help... What was that? This? It's a beer. Bruce, you said you had given up drinking.
Yeah I have given up drinking water. I don't want to give space in my stomach to something that I
do not need. It's going to be difficult yeah but I accept the challenge. Oh my god. I give up. TO GIVE YOURSELF UP TO SOMETHING: to dedicate
all of your time and energy to something. And guys the time has come to give yourselves up
