Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Cylon Models with Battlestar Galactica's Aaron Douglas!

hey campers we have a very special guest visiting today on one day builds and he should be arriving any minute there is now hey Aaron Douglas Wow oh yeah hey buddy brother okay you haven't been here before no I've been to the Mythbusters shop but I've never been to this yeah this is crazy feast your eyes you're ten this is insane so what do we do here well I bought some Battlestar Galactica models here and I thought you should choose one and make one that you want and then we just build a couple of models shoot the breeze okay I like that but I think I have something a bit more fun for you while I build my own Cylon Raider I brought some stuff from the great white north but this for you ah no way you have to read that out loud to Adam I will try whatever I fuckin want that's the thing that I think you might like being that this is a a building slash painting gig is I brought you the bling oh no way a master huh oh my god preview t1 unpainted dude that's incredible look at that so I figured you could paint it with a lot of vertical stripes to really thin me out spray-paint some ABS on there you know that is give me a kilo handsome this looks like a better sculpt in this or maybe just the paint jobs a little one-dimensional I can fix that I believe in you that is awesome okay paint this while you make one of these yeah I have a Cylon Raider I have a Cylon Centurion and then we might have ooh the colonial Viper you know what and you get but I'm gonna start with this one because I remember the first day that I walked from the stage and I saw the Viper yeah and I just went oh the full-size full-size by for a walk in the hangar deck I just went holy God and I mean it was just unbelievable but it was something that I was expecting to see right and I knew what it looked like because I remember what I saw what it looked like when I was seven years old but the first day I came around the corner didn't tell us that they had built a full one of these and it was 17 feet long and 15 feet wide and so I came around the corner and it's this right at me I know right right who is that and then I got up close and the head on it is like the silent but it's like this big and then the huge body the body's got to be eight feet long because you can climb up in it cuz starbuck got it up in it I got up in it and well Katie whatever and it was dark and they were lighting it for space yeah and they had gone to lunch or something and I just came around the corner I was not expecting this huge terrifying looking thing staring at me that's and so I'm gonna build this excellent all right I'm painting so I gotta gather some some paints and stuff I learned something interesting about painting figures when I first did it which is that you paint in the order that you get dressed ie you paint skin first then hair then clothes in the layers that they're in you're always painting on top of the under layers oh okay so are you gonna are you gonna paint the leopard thong speedo that I now do I paint this before I'm not assembling or do I just assemble and then go I'd say you assemble and then go I can we can do some air but I've got an airbrush set up over here so we can do some airbrushing I've got a bunch of lacquer model paints so we can do some specular highlighting oh right you need a model glue too so I've got snippers there for cutting the parts off the tree so the model glue that's a Tricia Helfer oh never mind okay this is wild that is awesome oh thank you sir now does that have any clear parts for the eye and has this oh cool okay nice I'm already doing it wrong by the time I get through with this nobody's gonna believe that I actually build spaceships in real life or on TV then gather some paints here nothing nothing's really gonna be a clip isn't it everything's gonna need a dab everything's gonna need a dab and the nice thing about this glue is that it's not like normal model glue which comes out all thick and it's like you put these together and brush this along the seam and it'll be glued in about 10 seconds oh sweet a nice weld bond looks like the bottles from the 50s - no my grandfather left this - ah that's good for me it smells like grapefruit potpourri - it's nice there's a lot of model makers who get sensitive to that smell now what are the colors that you are dark earth ya can use that black no though ice cream dark earth if ice cream anything skin tone look at that skin tone perfect skin tone with a little bit of green visible in it because there's always a little green in your skin all right got it mix my paint oh right what I'm gonna mix them in - hold on a sec great a drink so what we're doing now come on you I can warm that up and cool that down later but I want a little bit of white light got it I'm just gonna spray it okay remember herbal crumble isn't that nice the brushing on oh yeah it's much more civilized than that goopy oh yeah yeah I feel like I'm gonna be wholly responsible for the resurgence of model-making yes yeah I hope so okay excited about I don't know if enough kids are doing this when I go to the hobby store I don't see enough variance in kits it makes me worried that it's a dying art Oh get a little color on you what color you're going for there yeah I know you're a little green but I'm gonna lighten you up with some oil paints well he often was a little Hulk smash excuse me I just spray paint all over my face of course you did yes you did all right I'm gonna give you that hue of chief love the smell I know it's not an awesome smell but it is an awesome smell so it just reminds me of his childhood yes exactly I feel like a little boy okay now I need a piece of card reminds been going to the the construction stage shop that was across the street from where we were filming Battlestar yeah and going there every day for about a week watching them slowly build the Blackbird from scratch why that Blackbird episode our episodes wait the sr-71 yeah the thing that the stealth fighter right right right because they had to have it in the multiple stages so when we were filming that was like the frames and then the frame with the wiring and then you know basically built but without the skin so over in the construction shop they had those like five different stages of the ship all laid out and then they just what are we filming today we're filming this piece so they wheeled it across the street and then had wheeled it back but it was cool to go see them all lined up right across I know the other actors thought to do that so they just saw them piecemeal oh they must like to see you show up oh our construction guys were the best unbelievable the stuff they could make it's crazy all right I need a blow dryer that's fun right there's fine just go right there I'll be good where Adam does my hair come on don't be that guy it kind of looks like some kind of ninja device doesn't it what does this thing do we think I just whip it at somebody from the remake of crawl there you go it's very well yes we can put some jewels in it just let it happen you don't hurt yes oh that's it I'm getting it cool I'm getting a skin tone that's good white little crimson little yellow ah well that was a touch-and-go there with that skin tone for a minute I was like I'm not gonna get this finding greater happiness now can I ask you about these these wrist cuff things that you guys had yeah were those like a pain in the ass were they like heavy and kind of come no they were they're plastic oh yeah everything's painted to look metal but everything was just plastic and yeah they were just little pieces of kind of like a canvas belt huh with that little clasp that's all they were yeah they were fairly simple rather innocuous the make the most cumbersome annoying costume on the show would probably be the flight suit oh really mostly because it was 7800 degrees in summer time oh because it's like wearing a garbage bag I've got one in my collection okay I don't have a helmet I haven't been able to find one for Christ's dead a summer just squared outside you'll know what Katie's been complaining about all these years oh what's that now there's a lot of parts where he got to these ones where there's just like a whole bunch of things going on port thruster starboard thruster what are these words I don't understand she get bearing McCreary to score this worse I'm sure once it goes up a fan will be happy to supply that oh yeah somebody will go nuts with something for sure oh yeah look at that look at you go mm-hmm this is I've only ever done one little figure before so I'm kind of flying a little blind and I'm hoping this ends up working out worst case scenario you open the other one there you go there you go didn't get the eye as fine as I want cool must be fascinating for you guys huh they'll cut out the boring bit yes all said and done this thing's gonna be about 11 seconds long for some hair it's a race against glue to hide in time nice coffee I don't want to drink the thinner some choices in life or worse than others there we go oh look at that it's very very sad on radar it's by my command your command my command so one of the best stories to tell at cons is the story of the the boxers or briefs typically I get it you always get asked boxers or briefs really being funny right to which my answer was not neither and then I have a story about just such a moment where it went completely sideways on me I was wearing the orange coveralls and much like you get miked sometimes they can hang it on your back pocket sometimes they have to run it down your leg and put the wire on your boot yeah or that there's my preference by the way that changed my life yeah I always go I always go to like leg the boot always right like but if the sound Oh has to be too far away he hates that because it doesn't transmit as far yeah or the Tricia Helfer which is inner thigh as high as it oh poor thing yeah I'm like God in her red dress cause it's the only place you can hide it right so you told me she got she was like she had never acted before she got that part well she done something but something really small and not much yeah and so this was yeah this was definitely the biggest thing she'd ever done and she is without question the sweetest person you'll ever meet in your life well I mean was one of my favorite pleasures of the show is watching watching the actors develop and watching the characters get written for the actors and watching those things deepen and she it's not that she's bad at the beginning because she's not but the subtleties she brings in the last couple seasons is amazing yeah yeah she just got more or and more to do was great so anyways I got to the hangar deck and I was putting on my had my orange jumpsuit on and they had to run it down my leg mm-hm and I always liked to do the Superman flip so the sound guy got down on one knee like here dropped the wire down you drop it down your shirt drop it down your leg and I'll hook it up and I did the burp and he was right at head height waist height and I gave him a little smack in the face yeah and I thought that shouldn't it hit something warm and flesh like and so I looked down and you know everything's hanging out and I smacked the sound guy in the face with my schlong no way hey and everybody starts to turn in horror staring at me and I'm just standing there like this going oh oh and I look down and he's literally like this oh and then without skipping a beat Edward James Olmos spins around and goes Douglas just cold-cocked the sound guy I tell that story at cons and it usually brings the house home link god I usually drop the microphone and walk off the stage at that point yeah that's the mic drop off yeah yeah scene yeah poor Graham oh you're like Bob Ross over there mm-hmm little Bush right here happy happy tree Bob Ross is great oh I used to love her I would just be mesmerised I'd watch that for hours as a kid yeah just staring at that watch this guy built this thing was unbelievable yeah it was like a magic trick mm-hmm a long slow developing magic trip Wow so this stuff pretty much bonded is when you're done let me think are you really almost there I'm I think so I know hey that feels really good nice work okay so now one of the things you want to do is go through it where you've got some rough parts here give us use your nail file to sand and make it nice and clean then we'll hit it with a coat of primer you know we should use that to paint it on frankly I mean I know it's nice and clear but it's actually a great holder for painting it dude you were moving too fast that's what she said I feel like that's backwards no I should think it the other way on the stand I think that that looks like it's right to me feel about that no it is right because they don't have the notch going the other way yeah alright so now what you want to do here to get my nail file and yep give it a little bit of hi how are you fun now the excess glue we don't worry about um you take a cloth and I wouldn't what the primers gonna cover that almost completely okay yeah so yeah you want to sand those seams for they're nice and and this has a softy on one side and a side so we hit it with a rough side first if it actually gets too caked with rough just brush it on your jeans that'll pull off some of the grit so yeah easy it is kids if I can do it you can do it all right what color are your dark green oh wow I gave you a green shirt I'm gonna give you a different color well the others are not it's a great it is right oh man well I've gone with green that's why he's full camo chief mm-hm going down to Kobol so he can see you can hide from that season on the planet's surface was so depressing New Caprica yeah man the occupation Oh boss just exhausting yeah taizai coming out oh yeah yeah I thought it was hilarious cuz he always walked around like he was kind of had an eye patch on ya he's kind of naturally piratey he is totally naturally piratey I'm gonna go a dark green there we go oh it would be your five desert island sci-fi movies oh man that's a tough one you know I will tell you that when it comes to top 5 lists I always submit that there's at least 50 in your top 20 oh of course there is should I give it a whack of primer yes do we have a painting spot no we don't we can turn on the overhead fan here your fans and there'll be a whole bunch of dudes for boy he does that motion real well done how are you with rattle-can spray painting would you like a little primer no pun intended yes exactly exactly yeah you got it I don't need to tell you nothing I'm a professional tagger at home you make sure you want to hit your hand as much as possible as well man I go home with painted nails all the time he's looking pretty bad azz yeah you see how that hides the crimes like it hides those blue lines model man in me model humanity every now and then you know little glue gets covered by paint no one's the wiser we're gonna play a little game called it didn't happen although we are filming this yeah it is all getting covered for posterity Oh what's up just realized I painted the clear part ah well that's fine we could paint some red on top of that yeah we'll do that and you could you could hit it with a blow dryer to get it to a to set I think you may have to start another model I'm quite happy to do that oh darn I say darn previously Battlestar Galactica oh that was a nice rendition of the theme I mean of course I figured you'd have it down I can't do the Rey apart oh right I always loved that voice Oh beautiful voice spare his wife who's Bear McCreary really yeah the composer Wow so he was just like hey can you come in here for a second yeah honey yeah she has a beautiful voice she performs with the the orchestra when they when they go do that oh really yeah oh that must be great I would just set it aside yeah I think you should build a second one done all right good because it's gonna take me longer to paint this guy no of course it's I have a lot of nooks and cranny's Viper or the Cylon melon is this a full oh my god this bad boy oh Jesus what is that this is the Centurion oh my god you should totally build that or maybe it's too big yeah no I'm leaving the Viper for you holy moly this is crazy fun oh is that like you're actually building a full robot I am okay have you done this model building with anybody else before nope oh really you're the firm the inaugural yeah sweet just seemed like a fun thing to do yeah man you know I come here as often as I can even if it's for like half hour a day but it's a lovely oasis you know oh yeah yeah you know I mean it is overwhelming when it gets messy I get overwhelmed like I come in here I'm like ah I can't even deal with this place I always thought being an awesome order was gonna be awesome you know I finished this um movie gonna I'd been working on for like ten years and when I finished something I bring it home and I often literally just put it on my bedside table so I can kind of stare at it when I wake up and it feels good and I'm like home one night and I'm surfing on the computer I'm writing something that we're gonna be filming in a couple days and this famous iconic movie got a sitting on my bedside table and my wife turns to me and she get those dude you need to realize right now that you are eight year old use fucking hero haha that's exactly it was like you're totally right I'm gonna I'm gonna acknowledge that it's totally true things turned out okay eight-year-old animal if I knew then what I knew now I wouldn't have paid as much tension in this tailor's class that's for sure typing who the fuck needs typing typing is the own typing and science for the two things I got out of high school I type 80 words a minute nice yeah typing was amazing for me well there was that rash from the eleventh grade - but we don't talk about that that's Canadian high school yeah a couple weeks antibiotics clear that right yeah free healthcare is like the sky's the limit right oh yeah do whatever you want make sure you come out all right look at these guys idiots just nothing inside and tell these Cylons anything later I went last year October did a con in London and brought over my buddy Scott and we stayed for an extra week rented a car and did a whiskey tour of Scotland oh dude you know what I loved about Scotland he could drive across the whole country in about a day yep yeah and I've done it many times it's so beautiful yeah love love love love it we did that a couple years ago we drove we drove from Gerwin down the south all the way up to Loch Lomond Oh spent time between Edinburgh and Glasgow yeah fantastic it's beautiful hitting all the distilleries along the way oh so great and I wrote a little thing that I'm noodling and doing going back and doing it we took we filmed a whole bunch of stuff we put a dashboard camera on oh nice I just drove around and then we'd stop at every place and take lots of pictures and take some video and stuff and talk to locals I had an idea for because the chief at the end of the show goes off to Scotland and wanders around mm-hmm so in my mind is what if battlestar was real and what if the chief is a real dude he's immortal lived through time has been advising kings and queens lo these many years and he's kind of like the Sasquatch or the Yeti or the Loch Ness monster he's the local lore and he's seen by people who live there but not seen by outsiders and they don't talk about it's Outsiders right so you have all these people like oh yes you know he wanders in the hill and so if you go into a bar and there's a couple of empty shot glasses on the bar you just missed them oh so we have this whole thing about I figure we go up and we interview a bunch of just regular people and then I get some historian type people on real authentic historians to talk about how say yeah the chief legend has been around for a long time and and then I go up and we take we get some pictures of me in like the green bee use but long and blurry is sort of like the right like the Patterson footage attics but yeah foot yeah and then and then also me just people coming up going who why do you look like him that's amazing I thought it'd be fun little documentary that's great yeah so you have to be careful you know Neil Gaiman invented God that doesn't exist for American Gods and then there was a Wikipedia page and now he's been cited in papers and for the most part the origin story is practically lost and no one realizes that he just made it up out of whole cloth that's fantast I know good for him like you become your own feedback loop yeah I love that plan it would blow people's minds totally and that's the whole point of this exercise isn't it to blow people's minds you know we were talking yesterday on the podcast no no sorry was i oh yeah we were taking questions about you know will the new Star Wars movie usher in an era of practical effects right because you know they're doing most of the effects on a new Star Wars movie practically good for them and I was saying I don't know but I also do know that like we're never gonna get we're not gonna get to a part where most movies are made with people wearing green against green backgrounds because people who make movies want to have fun making them - yeah like yeah yeah yeah putting on those costumes and it's like this is great on a stage there's this great bit when someone asks Paul Thomas Anderson oh is it really true did the Daniel day-lewis never took off his costume like what's it like to work with somebody like that isn't that crazy and Anderson was like wouldn't you if you could inhabit someone else for a couple of months yeah like imagine how much fun that would be yeah you build this thing and then you you climb inside of it to a certain extent why not do that I was like really made it clear like yeah that could be really really fun but not against backgrounds with green sticks fighting invisible things yeah I did a movie like that I had to walk outside and stare at the pavement just to try and get my irises to come back to work oh I imagine because it's that really what's that green because that green doesn't exist in nature so it's that just weird your brain squint what the hell is this right right right this is what happens when you build a model kit 378 pieces you have to painstakingly pour over every single one to find the line the one that you want and in my case I've probably looked at it twice your parts are called left side cables and hoses you gotta watch out for those left side hose yeah there's something satisfying about me the guy who played the father of these things actually assembling one it's like I need to take it and go show it to Hogan I know this welcome to my colleague uh so uh colonel I was thinking about this this is like a prototype uh he'd be like oh yeah that's good look at how many parts there are I know oh my god I know these are beautiful this is really gorgeous oh my god this is gonna be lovely when you assemble it oh man that's great those were my model flush cutters when I worked at ILM Wow I hand-built them you hand-built this i hand-built this whole machine part that holds these an orientation I pulled these off a different thing because I didn't like it I wanted it to be softer I was using that all day every day I hate you clever fuckers like that in the car and the drive over it's like I watched I loved watching the show and I go wow I'm gonna build this but of course you are yeah cuz that's what normal people do they just build that kind of stuff see here oh the wind of Killarney yeah so many years ago other one I was four can't we to go walking together out behind the valley trees how beyond there's a hillside of heaven curtseying gently in the breeze from Brigadoon yeah yeah that is what I'd like to do be the Heather oh right the next word is something like the gloaming and I was like haha gloaming it's actually a word oh come on our minds are my hit my yeah I think I told you this but my wife and I love imitating Thai when he discovers he's a Cylon it isn't just for ya in that old man language that nobody understands yeah he and Donnelly roads had that old man language that nobody understood doc Cottle the kayo played doc Cottle we're at the lunch truck one time and they had hot dishes off the truck and then this beautiful salad table and there's some chafing dishes with some great stuff and there was a an Indian woman who made the most delicious curries and bean dishes and chickpea stuff and one day they had one of those chafing dishes just full of this delicious Indian food and you know Hogan's right up at the front and Donnelly's behind them and then I'm behind him Hogan lifts off the chafing dish Romo comes up and he's like oh it's his beautiful bean dish so it's these two old guys speaking in a language and no one else can understand cause it's just a whole bunch of oh like a really drunk Yoda and then it would have been really dirty you and Hogan starts labeling it onto his plate and turns to Donnelly and says Donnelly who want some beans it not only says I would but at my age you just can't trust your farts and I heard somebody fall down behind me and I look in Tommo is on the ground crying with laughter and I laughed for days like this one of my favorite stories from the show yes my clothes it's kind of like pseudo mad-scientist II mm-hmm you can tell the people that designed it had fun oh I like it when I see designs like that you know not just kind of okay well quickly knock something out no no no yeah it's got to be it's got to actually work I think is sort of the thinking behind it was mm we'd want this to work in life okay I'm gonna let him dry for a minute in the meantime I think I'll paint a gun ooh are you doing to him I'm gonna give this an open barrel way above my pay grade maybe I have some gunmetal this is not where's ray Oh Mac Oh gunmetal there we go like what is going on in there no way that's crazy-looking it is crazy-looking is that the pelvis no that's the melon that's the head Wow so there's like a whole thing inside of it he says yeah it's like Medusa under a helmet that's cool hmm hide your secrets from me for only so long my little friend oh yeah you know what I've got in this airbrush some gunmetal gray so hand me that Cylon Raider where is it check this out basically you've got the perfect color for it yeah oh yeah whoo it's got a nice Sheen to it as well that's not that ass at all that's cool that's ridiculously that isn't that awesome it's so cool we'll go in and do some detailing to it later too you can call out some of these panels and make them look cooler alright stop being that guy well that doesn't make any sense you and your glasses mm-hmm fun goggles goggles of fun all right you are being set aside for now because you're being disagreeable the cream-colored writing on the cream-colored part doesn't really help no it's like the back of the receiver or the DVD player or any component you Howard the writing line black writing and the black thing and it's always up against a wall underneath the shelf and behind a bulge open stuff don't even get me started drives me batty because you can't see shit aren't you you're right there hiding in plain sight but a cylon thing to do that opening with tricia asking are you human still so good we've initiated a bunch into this series that way are you alive are you alive yes oh my god yes kiss come on this is how we do it on the resurrection ships well just larger this would be a good room at a con yeah you know if you did models and you've had all of those stuff there people could bring their own little whatever's if they want to do extra little tricked-out things but you have a competition starts at 9:00 a.m. everybody gets the same kit but all I love that put it together and paint it and at the end will display them all and not a competition for yours is better than mine but just to see people's art yeah I always I've always loved the idea of a model making competition where you just got to watch like 40 model makers solve the same problem when the cool thing about it is you could do exactly that everybody could be working at a table like this and in middle area would be people could walk and you just have it rope so the Rope is through two feet away so you could stand and watch them do it and it would be you're allowed to come in but talk in whispers and don't ask the modelers questions right let them do their work yeah that'd be fun I agree I'd do that I'd buy that for a dollar yeah I'd be a good family thing - you'd have fathers and sons coming in yes I love this plan all right how am I gonna do these pupils this is oh right I still got to do your eyebrows there we go you could give me the Billy Zane the super plucked no eyebrow look Billy saying you know it'd be another cool thing another competent you could do this is like a not really a competition thing sort of it's each model person is is against themselves as everybody gets the same kit but in a blank box with no instructions yes yeah I like that so you have all these dudes opening it up and trying to figure out what it is and then putting it together yeah like um yeah you know about the how they do that with them puzzle competitions oh it's just the pieces uh-huh oh so you got to find like pieces start putting them together oh yeah real real puzzle champions this is a tree they actually they actually got work on blank puzzles which is like I don't even understand that yeah that's it's like bridge level smart okay they're almost ready for pupils boo hello gonna need to go with the extreme close-up lens I think I think I'm finished that's fucking ridiculous actually looks more like you even though I went with a lighter color brown yeah yeah this is sort of like yeah this has got just that nice little hint of Jon Voight instead of the Brian do anything that's ridiculous I will glue just did that how ridiculous I will glue him to a platform thanks awesome you're gonna get ripped for the green t-shirt but other than that you're gold I was thinking you were a member of the Nostromo crew oh there you go it's my alien rep yeah yeah it's a crossover so did you take a little tiny brush and paint all the individual creases and for the highlights no that's that's a mixture of basic green and then a dark wash over that and then a light dry brush over that it's always a sort of a mess and then with enough layers it starts to actually coalesce into something that looks like fabric I'm glad I brought that yeah me too this is they could not have been better that was freaking awesome addition as I'm now going to do some hyper awesome detailing on the Cylon Raider all right so the Cylon Raider looks pretty cool in the gunmetal with a little bit of black weathering its extremities etc but I'm going to do much more filmic paint job on it and that is going to include taping off some panels and darkening them and lightening them and then doing something which works beautifully on film called specular highlighting what I'll do is after I paint off a bunch of panels and see what they look like and get some differentiation I go in and tape off panels that don't match necessarily the panels that are there and I'll hit them with a gloss basically it will add like this whole extra layer of detail for a film and then one of the other things we do is we'll take a spaceship and we'll add extra panel lines in pencil John Candy's my all-time hero and all I hear from anybody who's ever worked with them is a nicest sweetest guy ever and then my second favorite was Robin Williams the pleasure of meeting him I've done two movies with Robin Hood not been was he good to you oh my god on Bicentennial man I was over at the craft services table and he comes over and we start talking and there was a news story that morning about a cocaine smuggling ship that had foundered off the coast of Florida and Robin started doing impressions of all the people showing up to help clean it up right which led to impressions of coked up Dolphins like me T Dolphins and then there's this point at which you have to say something which you never imagined saying because first of all you never imagined that you'd be at a craft services table as Robin Williams was doing comedy for you alone yeah and then you never imagined that it goes on for so long you go Robin I have to go back to work now excuse me so I don't get fired and you have to walk away was crazy almost worth taking the firing right I know oh that's fantastic where did you meet him I was walking down the street January 8 2007 and I was walking through Beverly Hills walking back from their office back to West Hollywood to the hotel and I'm walking down the street and walking right in front of the Jaguar dealership and there's a guy walking towards me and I don't get starstruck except for just a couple people and as I'm walking along I look up and I go guys guy looks familiar I know and as he gets beside me he goes hello smiles and nods and keeps on going and then I realize oh my god that was Robin Williams right holy cow so I send another follow-up text you know net you know screw you guys Robin Williams just walked by so I'm halfway through the intersection but a block and a half later and I feel this tug on my shirt and I hear this voice excuse me are you from Battlestar Galactica well I turned and I went yeah actually I want your Robin Williams and he grabs me by the arm and he drags me over to the curb and he does five minutes on why he loves the show Oh Eddy and he's just machine-gunning me right it's an amazing show an elegant show why did they move it from Friday to Sundays and that's backed up I don't know what day is it gonna be on is at 8 o'clock is at 9 o'clock I love it it's so elegant keep calling elegant you hear the chief you're amazing you're right mr. Williams I'm the guy I don't know what to say that you're one of my heroes we're talking about Battlestar Galactica so fair enough sir fair enough and then he just mmm okay thanks it's nice to see you bye and all these people are walking by going that's wrong Williams it was amazing yeah and then he just they just wandered away oh my gosh holy jesus that's insane yeah I was yeah I'm so happy that got to happen to me before he decided to go away Oh see he's since I was a little kid him and Andy were it for me him and who John Candy oh man I mean planes trains and automobiles oh yeah one of the greatest funniest movies ever made and I love the bit at which it goes into complete asinine unserious mode with the the devil suit oh yeah this one of the great like kind of movie is this it's like did you ever see that going the wrong way Tom Green movie Freddy got fingered no was it another one of those well sis there's a bit in it when everyone gets to the airport and it's like holding up signs at the arrival of the two heroes and one of the signs has when the fuck is this movie gonna end that's genius that's genius he says we're going the wrong way I always drunk how does he know John Cleese for the Commonwealth Club next month so I'm standing at the sci-fi party at Comic Con I'm there a little early and there with David Icke or the Battlestar creator guys and this dude walks up to me and I should realize that everybody there is there for a reason right and this guy walks up to me and goes hey you you're Aaron right and I said yes you play the chief and Battlestar Galactica I said yeah he goes man I love that show fuck I love that show I said oh thank you very much it's really he's good you know I came to it late and I try and fit it in in my schedule when I'm watching stuff and and I said oh oh grants great thank you very much I really appreciate it you are so good in that show you were quite your great actor oh thanks man and then at that time David Icke comes walking by I go I come here Dave this is uh this is a big fan of the big fan of Battlestar this is they said this is my buddy David Eick he's one of the X in the guy turn something goes dude I love your show and Dave looks at him this guy he goes oh my god I love your show it's unbelievable dinner for five I love what you're doing and I'm looking I'm going back and forth between them going I don't know I don't know and Dave looks at me he goes you have no idea who it is who I go no the guy looks at me and Dave looks to me looks at the guy he looks back at me and goes it's Jon Favreau like nice to meet you man oh that's great nothing like just oh okay well I'm not gonna be doing any of his movies he's nicest guy in the world no no he's the sweetheart he came by our set a few months ago I wish I hadn't screwed that up because I would really like to work on so John if you're watching this please give me another chance he's the same thing with Joss Whedon oh and then at dinner he comes over to the table and he starts fawning because it was a bunch of us again every time I'm with Ike people fancy people come up and start talking to us and and I'm just so I have no idea and then I'm so this is hey man introduce talk talk talk talk talk talk and that I finally pulled the oh that's really nice man I'm Erin he goes I'm Joss Whedon of course you are oh my god yeah I meant I'm Erin I'm an idiot I actually our first year at the Emmys the schmemmys and we lost so we're doing that boot and death march to the Governor's Ball yeah and josh has has won beautifully for dr. horrible and he's really clearly moved by having one for dr. horrible and it so he gives a wonderful speech about working with your friends and stuff and I literally I ran up to him and I was like he was all like sweaty and freaked out from having one and I think I said we're gonna have dinner someday well played yeah I it's just so important to me that's such an important show yeah some of these moments you look back on and go really really did I say that is that really what just happened Oh like that hey hey sploshy keep it down are you doing this something is my favorite part I do all model making just to get to this the distressing yeah because watch see I paint it with oil paint and you go rub your Everton yep yep and all of a sudden all this scale appears yeah I've been refinishing a bunch of the woodwork in the house getting to do all of the the stain using that gel stain that you put oh yeah it's a rub off very fun to do that's what happens when you're an unemployed actor shit around the house gets done what is going on here why aren't you all operating there you go stop being that guy oh that's better whoo yeah here we go all of it good lord just like two four six eight eight pieces to each foot that oil wash is the reason to do the whole thing I'm the one that put it together dude those are beautiful holy cow that's gorgeous is it still poseable uh no I don't know how much of Moose god that's gorgeous oh god no eyes held complex those things were okay when you were rehearsing the scene they'd have the effects guys we had these eight and a half foot cuts I love Cylon cutouts and so when we'd rather the marching by that go and unrehearsed oligo action so you'd stand there these cardboard cutouts would go like this so you had an eyeline there you go dr. Douglas - Oh r1 please dr. Douglas - Oh r1 it is like playing an imprecise game of operation isn't it so I'm gonna paint this in a very quick and dirty paint job style mm-hmm do you want to put it on the base is there a base yeah yeah sure here oh and we should give it a head - yeah go haha awesome okay let's get a little bit of hot Cylon section here hot Cylon love okay you ready for a paint job all right so I'm gonna do a very very quick and dirty this is gonna be black gray and silver first I'm going to undercoat it it's black probably the inside details I'm gonna hit it with some grey on top and then some silver to get it kind of a grey Cromie sort of weathered look I think it's work there's the black failure is always an option he looks badass oh yeah it is a beautiful model I've named him Alphonse he's my nephew Alphonse I dub thee sir betta Mia then be able it's great to be able to get dressed like that every morning yeah just someone spray paint you let's get up stand there and have a couple of people come back home do you know speaking of the of the spray painting that presses make up in Blade Runner with Daryl Hannah's idea really yeah how awesome is that and even her life even her like gymnastic fighting style was apparently her idea look I read it on reddit it could be a total lie but I like believing it you could do like a super box black lacquer super high Sheen gloss yeah a little wild all right this is a gunmetal bottle paint really you should be describing what you're doing in it Julie a child's voice that's just frakkin ridiculous BAM there you go and that lovely whoa that is so cool that is a lovely trio of battle making for a few hours yes there's there's uncle chief nephew Alphonse and this is cousin Dave that how cool is that that's nice nice a nice day how cool is that nice one day bill look what we did with delicious Mexican food in between dude let's go have some dinner thanks buddy absolutely it's drunk all right stand up you're drunk see you guys later bye say bye chief
